I replaced another failed Canon scanner with this 4400F. I used it 6 months. It worked sometimes, and the quality of output was great when it worked. Nothing wrong with the scanner, but it doesn't like the software. Google "cannot communicate with scanner" for all Canon and you'll see what I mean. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get an HP. After owning many Canon products, I won't buy them again. Very bad experience.

The scanner itself is excellent, and having the power directly from the USB port is great, one cable less!!
On the minus side, Mac installation is not as straightforward as most hardware devices for a Mac (I mean, no installation at all!). Here, you have to install 5 software packages (yes, five), which is so an overkill for such a simple device.. Besides, the software has no integration with Mac software suites; it would be ideal just to use iPhoto to get scanned pictures..

I did not used it very often. The best thing is it is very compact, save a lot of space. Moreover, it only use USB port for power supply. One shortcoming is when you save the scanning pictures as Jpeg, it is a little slow. However, it is much faster to save as PDF files.

I was very excited to have purchased this scanner--it has been on my wishlist for many years now and I could finally afford it out of my own pocketbook ^_^ However, it turns out that this scanner is defective. I thought I was being technologically incompetent--I continued receiving the same error messages--but the Canon rep I spoke with today said it is a hardware problem and not a software or computer problem. And they are issuing me a new one under warranty (So I don't have to pay a cent). Right now it is Friday, and he said to expect it sometime around Monday. Warranty or not, the Canon customer service was AMAZING, and to be honest, I am not angry at all, albeit a bit disappointed that I couldn't use my scanner sooner. After all, sometimes these things do happen, right? So I plan to come home early as I can on Monday and try out my new scanner. And then I'll finally be able to write a review on its performance! So take this 2-star review lightly until then...

Fast and easy to use!.......2007-12-28
I am not an expert, but I did search for quite awhile and read as many reviews as I could on various scanners with ADF. This one kept getting the best reviews for the combination of price, ease of use, speed, and features. I purchased four of them under a grant program, and have not been disappointed. Setup was easy. The software (including Adobe Acrobat 8- a terrific deal!) installed smoothly and I was ready to go. I have scanned numerous 30-50 page documents and am very happy with the speed, accuracy and quality. The duplex scanning deletes any blank backsides, and conversion to .pdfs, Word, or Excel was easy. The OCR was accurate when the originals were clean. If not, the optical recognition did the best it could, and I couldn't fault it for it's guesses!
This machine is a good deal. After purchasing four of them under a grant for others, and trying it out, I purchased one more for myself!
Fast but Slow.......2007-12-26
I love this scanner. It's small. It's EASY to use. Easy to set up. Scans jpg's and PDF's. Scans both sides. I use the scanner in a small business enviornment. We are small manufacture that ships LTL and full truckload orders all over the 48 states. We scan every invoice, every POD, and every anything that relates to running the business. Me best guess is 60-180 pages per day. I have found only two problems with the scanner. 1.) Unless you are scanning crisp fresh paper, the autofeed will only work with 5-9 pages at a time. Anything that has been tri-folded for mailing, don't expect 25-50 page autofeed. 2.) Non-standard size paper. We have a couple companies we work with that send dot-matrix invoices. These are 6" x 9" pieces of paper. I have not found a way to scan multiple pages at once. I need to scan them one page at a time. Due to these two issues, it makes the process a little slow. But when you place 20 page fax in the scanner, it is beautiful to watch the speed.

I am a long suffering PaperPort 11.0 user. A very unstable and unsupported product that I used with a Kodak scanner to go paperless. A friend suggested the S510 as an alternative. I couldn't be happier. After loading a few of the included applications, it works flawlessly. I was able to replace our old Acrobat 5.0 with the included Adobe Acrobat 8.0. It's sort of like getting a $100 discount on the S510.

I just set up and tried out this scanner yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised first by it's small size. Then by the speed and ease of use. It is capable of double side, color scanning with OCR. I scanned a couple stacks of bills in color. It was very fast. I then turned it to black and white only and single side scanning. I would estimate in this mode that it scans each page in approximately 1 second. Incredible. I've been using my flatbed scanner to scan in bills and documents. This is a completely different animal than a flatbed scanner. I haven't tried the OCR or played around with the software but I am very impressed so far. I highly recommend this product. I'm cleaning out my file cabinet, burning everything to CD and shredding all these old records.

I use this scanner in my home office and its great for scanning multiple documents, much better then my all in one, which takes forever. This is fast and really easy to use. It automatically puts it in pdf format which is really nice, but the filing scheme is a bit confusing to me. its some random number that I have to open it up and see what it is if i'm scanning multiple documents. Otherwise great scanner.

Scan multiple photos at once - save hours.......2007-01-07
This is the second scanner I owned and it is much superior to the one that came before. Not only is the scanner aesthetically pleasing and relatively unobtrusive, it is powered via USB, which makes it one of the few doodads I own that doesn't require access to a wall socket.
I hadn't had much use for the scanner until last week when my mom and I decided that the shoeboxes full of photos should be digitized and preserved.
I scanned over 500 pictures in one day in only a couple hours, with not a lot of work. The key is the remarkable technology that lets you put multiple photos on the plate at once, and it automatically detects the edges and crops the photos, saving them as it goes. I'd say out of the first 500 or so scans, there were maybe 4 mistakes (cutting heads off for instance) but that was easily remedied by rescanning at a different angle).
I use a combination of photoshop and picasa to organize the pictures. If I had to manually scan and crop every photo, I'd go mad. Thankfully this canon has made my job a lot easier.
Works quickly and efficiently.......2005-09-27
This scanner is just what I needed as a professor. I need to prepare class presentations and this scanner works quickly and effectively to scan the diagrams I need to have scanned. It is handy to use because it does not have a separate power supply to haul around. In fact I have one of these scanners at home and at school.
Broke after one year.......2005-09-20
This was a nice scanner until it died. It did a decent job scanning color print photos once I got the right settings. Unfortunately, it stopped working exactly one year after I purchased it. This was on a Sunday, no telephone tech support from Canon on Sundays. I called them the next day and spent almost an hour on the phone to confirm the scanner was dead. Then I was told that I was one day out of warranty, tough luck, thank you for purchasing Canon products. They would not budge at all. For this scanner, Canon gets 2 stars: 4 for actual performance, 3 for the driver software, and zero stars for durability and customer service. Hopefully Epson will be better.
Reliable and Transportable.......2005-09-03
While waiting for a good page scanner, I bought the LiDE 35 to use in scanning my receipts for expense reports and client documents. The cover of my scanner is dented and the TSA has mis-packed it a dozen times causing me to worry that it would be damaged but each time I've unlocked it, plugged it into my USB port and begun scanning. I've been very pleased with this scanner and on occasion when I scan photos find that it does a beautiful job there too. I'm impressed with this scanner.
Great small scanner.......2005-08-13
I bought my LIDE35 at Fry's Electronics for under $40. I needed a scanner in a hurry since my last Paperport had died. The LIDE35 installed and worked with no problems. The quality of my first scan was much better than any done with the Paperport.
I bought this unit because it was cheap and small. It is compact enough to travel with a laptop. USB power means you don't have the weight, mess, and need for an outlet that a wallwart powered scanner has. This is a big plus if you are traveling. Computer bags seem to grow in size and weight when you are running across Ohare airport tryin to catch a plane on the other side of the terminal. Wallwarts require power strips and make a mess in hotel rooms.
The LIDE technology looks good to me. I have had 4 previous scanners. They all died because the CCFT lamp went South after a year of moderate use. LEDs should last much longer. I found the color quality and balance of LIDE better than the CCFT scanners I had used. It is really nice to be rid of the lamp warmup warnings and delays.
Buttons on the front are more of a problem than a feature for me. I ususally operate scanners through the scanner control software, and edit with photoshop. Accidentally hitting a button wastes more time than using it for it's intended purpose ever saved. I would actually pay a few bucks more to have a scanner that did't have buttons.
Other things that would improve the LIDE35 are:
Make it even thinner and lighter.
A lighter thinner USB connection cable. Several aftermarket cables are more compact.
Over all I feel this was a bargain. It works better than any other scanner I've had and will probably last longer since there is no CFFT. Canon did a good job on the LIDE 35.

Awesome scanner - Must have!!.......2007-05-03
I've had this scanner for over a year now and loves it!!! The scanned documents are cleared and the scanner is just so easy to use! I use it to scan all my important documents into PDF files, old photos, etc. Unfortunately, I broke the glass on the scanner when I took it on travel with me (my fault) and bought a CanoScan LiDE 70, which I thought was an upgrade. Boy do I miss my CanoScan LiDE 60, which is so much easier and clearer than the Lide 70.
Better, but still a pain........2007-03-16
This is my 3rd Canon scanner. The unit is nicely made, very slim and lite. Physically much better than previous Canon scanners. However, the Canoscan software is only marginally better. It took a while for me to get it installed correctly, actually two tries.
Great document/receipt scanner for Windows and Linux.......2007-03-13
I've used the Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 under Microsoft Windows Vista and Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.10, and it works great in both. I purchased this product for scanning documents and receipts, and it does its job very well.
With Windows Vista, you need to download the drivers from Canon's website (they're not included with Vista). The drivers are very minimal, lightweight, and easy to use; in about 5 minutes I was scanning documents straight into Adobe Acrobat.
The LiDE has to be one of the easiest hardware installs I've ever done in Linux. I plugged the scanner in, and started xsane. It detected my scanner and I was scanning immediately--that's it, no having to install or configure anything!
I've a few complaints:
* Noisy: the motor that draws the scanning head makes a very high pitched screech when moving. When I first received the device I thought I'd be able to use it in a library--not happening unless the library is deserted.
* Adequate color reproduction/photo scanning: The color reproduction on my Epson 2450 is leaps and bounds better. The LiDE however is easily 1.5-2x faster, a fraction of the price when comparing MSRP, and has much nicer drivers.
* Too lightweight to scan books easily: The scanner being featherweight is a good thing, except if you have to scan books or anything bound/stapled of more than a couple pages. Stuff shifts easily if you do not hold the scanner and book while scanning.

Superb Value - Poor Software Design.......2007-04-03
Overall, I am extremely pleased with the scanner, but disappointed with the driver software supplied by Fujitsu; except for the ADOBE 7.0 OEM package.
Tech Support by phone is SUPERB: only a five minute wait.
Before buying be sure you understand that this unit is composed of TWO scanning elements. The ADF unit has a built in scanner that is integrated with a separate flatbed scanner. The ADF will handle LEGAL size pages with no problem. However the flatbed only handles letter size pages.
Fujitsu's disc contains two TRIAL programs; QuickScan Pro and Image Processing Software by Captiva Software. Both packages are geared to small office or commercial business needs and I did not take time to get into those; mostly because they are cost prohibitive for a home user and it is an onerous task to navigate the extensive documentation on the CD. If you are looking for a unit to automate document control and eliminate the paper in an office, this is a good starting point.
I found the Installation CD to be poorly designed and confusing. For example if you try to load the ISIS driver without a program such as QuickScan Pro that it can link to, the system will not popup a dialog explaining the problem.
The basic Fujitsu software supplied with the scanner is the TWAIN driver and program called ScanDALL 21. There are THREE separate screens that you have to deal with while scanning and the functions can be a bit confusing. Yes there is documentation, about 180 pages...
For example, you can choose several options for each scan operation. One is Scan to File, another View Scan. If you choose the first all the pages are instantly scanned to the chosen directory, without thumbnail views.
Fujitsu engineers and document specialists did not take the time to ensure that all information on the diagnostic functions was grammatically correct. Yes, it is understandable, but shows a lack of care.
A home user with minimal functional needs can easily get by with the Microsoft Office Scanner tool or simply use the included ADOBE Acrobat 7.0 package.

CanoScan 8800F Scanner Quick Review.......2007-12-29
The CanoScan 8800F scanner is one of the best I have used. Installation on a Windows XP machine was quick and easy. A primary reason for getting this copier was to scan and digitize the many slides I have acquired. The resolution of the slides I have scanned to date is excellent. The scanner buttons provided are a great convenience. No more does one have to remember what program to start for a particular feature. Just press a button and select what you want from a pop-up window. So far, I am very pleased with this purchase and I would highly recommend this scanner.
As a side note, ordering it from [...] was quick and easy. The price was also great.

that makes decent quality scans. The software that comes with it are mostly useless though. The software that auto crops the images can sometimes get it wrong and crop off too much. Also needs real linux support.
Fast scanner but image quality not as good as I had hoped.......2007-12-19
This is the first Canon scanner I have owned. I bought it based on the technical specs and because other Canon scanners had fairly positive reviews.
I have have had 3 Epson scanners over the last 10 years and have been very pleased with the image quality, but somewhat disappointed with the software and heat up time for the lamp (which is typical for most scanners). The CanoScan 8800F appeared to have a better software package according to the literature and would be faster with no heat up time required for the lamp.
I still have my last Epson scanner which is a Perfection 3170. I use it on another computer so I was able to do some comparison scans with both scanners.
Results:
For standard pdf scans, copies and faxes, the image quality of the Epson was quite noticeably better using standard mode scans. The Canon was much faster but I was disappointed that the image quality at 150 and 300 dpi was not better or at least as good.
For picture scans, both scanners did a very good job. Again, I liked the image quality and color of the Epson, but was not displeased with the Canon.
Conclusion: I bought this scanner as an update to the Epson which is 2 years old and because I was hoping for an improvement in speed and overall image quality. My thoughts are that the Canon is a good scanner but I was disappointed that it didn't blow the Epson away. It has more buttons on the front but you still have to use the software to set up each. I am not impressed with the MP Navigator software that came with the Canon. It has no advantage over Epson as some have inferred in their reviews. However, I like the Presto Pagemanager and Photoshop Elements. I use the scanner for a variety of applications, like making copies, digitizing to PDF files, digitizing prints and slides (which can later be touched up using Adobe) and for faxing. I have not scanned any slides or color negatives yet. There may be some adjustments I can make to improve the quality of B&W and grayscale images. I will do some investigating into that. I mainly wanted to share my initial impressions of the Canon as compared to my experience with older Epson scanners.

Reason for purchase was to scan old 35mm slide pictures that were over 40 years old. Commercial scanning is very expensive. Scanner does a great job bringing old slide pictures back to life and digitizing them. I've stored thousand of old family pics on DVD for posterity. Great product..only wish the scan could work faster. It takes 4 to 6 minutes to scan (four each scan) to accomplish. Definitely caught up on my reading during the scanning process. Fabulous Scanner!.......2007-12-11
When I got my new pc with Vista installed, the result was that it disabled my printer, scanner & all-in-one, with no driver downloads available! So the search was on for new peripherals. I read oodles of reviews for scanners & there seemed to be quite a few unhappy users: speed, flimsy construction etc. I really got discouraged until I found the 8800f. My son got it for my birthday in October. I have a 'gazillion' slides & photos that I need to get onto CDs etc...so definitely need the slide-scan capability. I have done a few slides & quite a few photos for my genealogy website etc. and am very pleased with the scanner's performance. There really is no 'warm-up time'...and the scans have been quick & good quality. Even though I had Photoshop Elements 5 (which also came with the scanner)-I find I use the ArcSoft Photo Studio edit default program a lot for basic edits.
I highly recommend the CanoScan 8800f-so glad I found it!

Good scans. Fairly quick. USB powered, so no seperate power cord. OCR software is decent but doesn't seem as easy to use as the last version. The image is upside down from the orientation on the scanner so I have to remember to put the item in upside down or rotate it afterwards - a very minor inconvenience. Good price/value.
Very good basic home scanner.......2007-12-21
This Scanner works with only one USB plug (no bulky power adapters).5 volt so it has very low power consumption, and very easy hook up to the computer. The scanner is a touch noisy but I will not count that against it, because it is fast easy to use and has great software with it. My first copy was made with one push of the of the scanners copy button and was printing out on my printer within 15 seconds of pushing the button. Also this scanner will create PDF documents, so you can send/email any multiple page documents to anyone all in one PDF document (this alone is worth the price of the scanner). This scanner will not copy Slide photography so don't buy it for that. One important thing to note is that (unlike most hardware)YOU MUST INSTALL ALL SCANNER SOFTWARE BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO PLUG THE SCANNERS USB PORT INTO YOUR COMPUTER. I have Vista home premium but this scanner should work equally well with XP.

This product did what I bought it for and that to scan regular 8 1/2 X 11 papers for school. Its a tad slow and now I wish i wouls have bought something to handle larger items.

I just bought this scanner yesterday- I am scanning dozens of old family photos so I can color correct them and put them in an album for my parents. Anyway- I went looking for the 25, but it was not in stock, so I went ahead and got the 90. I am extremely happy with it so far. It's very fast, and the quality is better than I expected for the price. Installation was easy, and the software is self-explanatory. And I love that it doesn't need a separate power source.
One piece of advice- don't know if this is just me, but I was unable to get the scanner to work when I plugged it into my USB hub. I had to plug it directly into my machine.

As a user of film and flatbed scanners I found the technology has moved on from the last time I purchased a scanner. This is a multi-function unit with many options. Small, compact, no power supply needed, multi scans at the push of a button. May be set up to do a scan and do a direct upload to an email with one button. The software driver gives you many choices. Very good value for the low cost
