Miss my old printer! Too slow, too noisy, too finicky.......2008-01-02
I replaced my old Epson printer with the Photosmart because I wanted a fax machine. I have been regretting it ever since. The HP Photosmart C6180 is way too slow -- seems to take twice as long as my old printer. It is also constantly doing something it calls "Printer Preparation" which involves making a huge amount of noise. The scanner is slow and strangely complicated to use. I am mystified by the good reviews this printer has gotten. Maybe I got a lemon? It seems very user UNfriendly to me.

I purchased this pinter because my daughter has the same one and she is very happy with hers. As for me, I also am very satisfied. It was very easy to set up, both for a wireless connection from my laptop and a wired connection from my Desktop which is located next to the printer. I am very pleased with the quality of everyday printouts, usually by printing from various web sites or WORD or EXCEL documents. I am especially pleased with the quality of photos. I have printed from my camera memory cards and have scanned photos, both methods yielded very good quality printouts, both in resolution as well as color match. I previously owned an HP Photosmart 2400xi All-in-One and was very satisfied with it as well. The C6180 is even better in print quality. Plus it is wireless network capable.
I HATE my HP Photosmart cash eating printer !.......2007-12-20
I have owned HP all-in-one products for years and years. This ink eater wont even let you finish using the ink in the cartridges! I take a cartridge out and shake it only to find there is still a noise of a solution (ink) left in it BUT the software says you are out of ink, only use HP ink (very expensive) and you cannot refil because a software setting. If you don't replace the "empty" ink cartridge, then the printer will shut down on you and be rendered inoperable...The software actually tells you that in a message on your screen. Makes you feel so glad you bought the horrible thing. Purchasing this printer is nothing more that supporting a recurring expensive cost of ink. I HATE MINE and will sell it real cheap but not to anyone I know...I'll never buy HP again!!! Jerks!
Good only for pictures, bad software.......2007-12-15
I bought this printer because my wife is a teacher and wanted to print some color prints for her students. The quality of the prints is acceptable, but if your prints contain a lot of text as well, then the black ink will run out so fast you won't believe it. Quality of pictures is OK, but if you want the printer primarily for pictures you should consider that the color cartridges will also run out very fast because they are very small.
A major negative point that another reviewer discusses is the software: after installing the software on my laptop, it takes an extra 5 to 10 minutes to start it up, seriously. The printer software is clearly to blame because if I kill any hp processes running from the task manager (if I manage to open it), my laptop immediately beomes much faster. That's a major complain, I'm at the point of considering to uninstall the software from my laptop...

My dad needed a new printer, so it was research time. He actually found this one in an ad at a local retailer, so we went to check it out. Very nice printer with all the functions you would ever need for most home computing printing needs. After deciding on this printer, we checked out Amazon and once again the price was the lowest around. Saved over $70 from purchasing at the store! Anyway, the printer works great, was easy to set up, and prints beautifully. A big plus is the separate ink cartridges. That saves a lot of money over the long run vs. the one black and one color ink cartridge models. Another great featuer is that it will print on the front and back of pages. Very happy and would definately recommend!
Great multifunction despite a few niggles.......2007-12-30
I got this 2 days ago for $399 Aussie dollars ($299 after 100 dollars cash back via HP promotion). I got this despite the problems highlighted by the reviews posted here (but I made sure I got it from a retail store so I could take it back if there were any problems º)
Basically I wanted a multifunction (printer/copier/scanner/fax) with a auto duplex and automatic document feeder and built in wireless (I only have a laptop therefore wireless was useful). I wanted reasonable print quality/scan quality at reasonable speeds.
The AIO/Multifunction options that I short listed after looking around a lot are as follows
HP Photosmart C7280, C7180, C6180
Cannon MP830
Brother MFC-685cw
Eventually settled on the C7280 because
- The C7280 has wireless Plus a ADF and better print quality ans speed compared to C6180 or 7180.
- None of the canons have wireless but reported to have better print speeds and quality from all the reviews I looked at BUT¡K.cannon has major problems ¡KUses color cartages for duplexing which is purely cannon ripping us off to make money on cartridges (costs a fortune long term on ink cartages !!) Not none of the major review groups (CNET, ZNET, PC Magazine etc) noted this despite raving reviews¡K.AVOID AVOID
- Brother is a great machine and has the additional plus of a message center and a handset but overall this is offset by the poor fax (14Kbs cf 33.6 with the others) and slow print speeds
I was a bit apprehensive about buying the C7280 as only 3 stars and many complaints predominantly to do with Software and networking (the actual printing seemed excellent). However I did get it and I have to say I have been very impressed and very satisfied.
The pros:
Superb print quality and reasonable print speeds. At maximum resolution I can¡¦t tell the difference between the photo prints and my lab prints
ADF works great as does auto duplexing (no more doing everything one by one or having to turn the paper over!)
Scanning is great plus can scan to JPEG, PDF, word doc etc which is a bonus
Full control over printing (colour, back in only etc)
Wireless works fine for me (currently setup as an ad hoc network between laptop and printer)
can print photos off usb or memory cards
Cons:
Software is mediocre but I did a custom install and left out all the marketing crap and the BS that HP unfortunately bundles. Although I fully agree with others that this printer could be better if it had decent software. However it has not crashed at all and to be fair on HP all the other companies also bundles BS software Plus I don¡¦t think the software is realy bad as some of the reviewers are making it out to be
Overall I think this thing is great and does everything I want preaty damn well and well worth the money I spent (I think print quality matters more , I can live with niggly software)
Some simple tips if you buy this and want to avoid problems:
(1) Buy it from a retail store with a good returns policy. Then if you have any problems you can always take it back
(2) Follow the instruction when installing (and have some patience)¡V some of the reviewers who had written negative stuff clearly didn¡¦t bother to read instruction and then wonder why they got into trouble. Custom install and DO NOT select auto updates (which seem to cause most of the problems). Disable spyware, antivirus such as Norton and windows firewall temporarily.
(3) The wireless takes a little bit of patience setting up. Easiest way is to do a manual network setup and directly set in the IP address. Sometimes it will say printer not detected or the printer will disappear of the list of available printers. I ran into this problem early on but it¡¦s because both the printer and computer must be transmitting for a network connection to be established. DON¡¦T PANIC. this is not a printer problem it¡¦s the network¡Kmake sure the printer is connected to the network (if using ad hoc network you can go to the wireless setup and manually connect to the network and check the network setup on the printer). This is actually not as hard as it sounds and anyway this is the first time I have set up a network so if I can do it the majority of people should be able to as well

Bought this printer a week ago. Very impressed with its cross platform capabilities:
Fax, print, scan all works very well on Linux (FC7) and windows.
Claim to work on mac OS X. But unfortunately my mac was too old (OS 9).
Very quiet printer.
Only one downside I found: Cannot receive fax when printer is turned off.
My old Brother MFC 3820CN could do that.

Short Lived.......2007-08-26
I purchased this machine as an "upgrade" from my previous all-in-one HP unit. While the set up was easy, and the printing was an upgrade, the unit has stopped being able to send or receive faxes within 8 months.
Unfortunately HP "customer service" has been less than helpful in this matter, and has thus far (after 3 hours with them on the telephone) not agreed to honor their 1 year warranty.
I will NEVER purchase another HP printer again.

We have had this printer for about a month now. It replaces another HP all-in-one color inkjet that functioned only moderately well for several years. This machine is a definite improvement: its size is more modest, the color printing is much more realistic, the fax is more dependable and the wirelss networking is excellent. Setup was easy and the wireless networking was established without any trouble at all. We have been able to use the machine's functions fully and dependably from wirelessly networked laptops.
The only problem, and it is a significant one, is the excessive software that HP includes in the setup disc installation. The weighty baggage of unnecessary customer-enveloping layers of HP add-ons definitely slows down overall computer operation and can be very frustrating. HP should streamline their valuable central command software and dispense with the HP shopping software sidelines or at the very least clearly make them an optional install. We have painstakingly deleted much of it to great benefit.
Nonetheless, we have had no complaints about what this all-in-one is designed to do. It does it well and the dependable wireless function is truly key to our enjoyment of the purchase. In additon, cheaper generic color replacement cartridges are readily available on the internet.

Good Combo but Oh That Support and Software.......2007-08-23
I really do not have any complaints about the hardware side of the product. It works very well, and the photos produced are quite good. Tech support and software is another matter. It's not the technicians but how they work. The software/hardware users manual leaves a lot to be desired.
As I started doing more, I found the software a bit daunting. The solution was to call tech support. The manual did not answer my questions. One of the worst things missing from it was the fact that one has to load the menus from the software. If you go to the LCD panel, you'll find a lot of menu items missing. They must be loaded from the HP Solution Center that you install. The need is not addressed in the manual. When I began I ran into some software problems that stopped me cold. I called tech support and their method of support was to have me download a huge file, 150M, I think. Once downloaded, I had to wade through the installation of it with the techie. Most of the time I just left the phone off the hook and read the newspaper, or did work close to the computer (PC). The techie probably did a crossword puzzle. It took nearly four hours on the phone the first time. The next time I had to do something similar, but the really large file was still on my PC. I think I called them 5 times in the first 2 months for a total of 12 hours of support time. An 800 number fortunately.
The last problem took 20 minutes to solve (again some menu items not installed). I got to to talk to a supervisor and aired my difficulties. I strongly recommended that they automate the process of downloading and installing files. This is not a unique idea, other companies do it.
