Wireless problems and how I resolved them..........2007-12-20
I just received this printer today as a replacement for my HP d135. When I configured wireless networking, the printer continually locked up and required unplugging from the AC power, and connecting an ethernet cable to regain any control over the printer. Once I got it to respond, I had to go into the advanced network settings, turn off "automatic IP" which uses DHCP.
After manually specifiying an unused static IP address on my network, I re-enabled the printer's wireless network. Now, wireless networking behaves as it should, and the printer seems to work quite well (I've tested every feature except faxing so far). I like the printer and the scan to network folder features which work fine. The actual printing operation isn't very noisy at all, however, when the machine feeds a sheet of paper, that's when it is a bit noisy.
I chose this printer because of the wireless, scan to folders, draft print speed, and the fact that there are continuous ink systems available for it.
Hopefully my review can save some other people from hours of frustration with the bugs in HP's firmware. I'm an engineer and have worked with hi-tech stuff for over 20 years.
Now where do I send the bill for my wasted 3 hours working around your bugs HP? Spank you very much! I like the printer, but for heaven's sake do some software quality control!
Well Worth The Money!.......2007-12-10
After reading the reviews, I was very hesitant to buy it as some of the negatives were strong enough to cause me pause. Still, after much, much deliberation and comparing, I went for it. And I'm glad to report that most of it is like I was hoping - that if you a) read the directions, and b) take into account what you're getting for the money, this printer rocks!
Pros:
#1 - All it does for the money, bar none, nothing compares (I'm not even going to begin, I bet you already know!)
#2 - Print quality is fabulous - text is crisp, and I just printed some pics on high quality glossy paper, best of any printer I've had!
#3 - Extra paper tray nearly pays for the printer - disregard earlier complaints about how it handles the trays, all you have to do is read the directions - put plain paper in the extra tray (which is tray 2)(holds a whole pack, which is a big reason I bought this baby!), make it the default, and "lock" tray 1. For me, works great, I'm happy.
#4 - Works great - unlike some reviews, I've had no issues with software loading, 2-sided printing, jamming, feeding, etc. And I don't believe the plastic is so cheap that you feel it's going to break...I think it's just fine.
Cons - Ok, a couple
#1 - Yes, it's louder than anything I've had, but hey, how can I expect the quietness of a $10k pro machine 'at the office' for a $500 home model?
#2 - The sensor on the document feeder is a hair trigger - if I sneeze, I get an error msg saying the doc feeder is open and I need to close it - I then go over and tap it, it goes away. Now then, I haven't called anyone, and I'm going to, hoping for good results, will post a follow up...but if this doesn't go away, it could easily be the most annoying thing I've ever seen and be a total deal breaker for me...stay tuned
#3 - I don't really care for the PhotoSmart software, and so far, I can't find a way around it, gotta use it if you want to use the pre-programmed buttons on the face. Not a deal killer, but wish they had made it so I could hit a scan button and it would go straight to my MS-Digi Image Pro, which I love.
All in all, let me save you the trouble - I shopped until I dropped, and for the relatively little dough I spent, I'm very happy. Buy it, you won't be sorry.
Warning -- DO NOT BUY -- terrible printer.......2007-11-27
I bought this printer to replace last year's model, which irreparably broke just after the warranty period ended -- I should not have been so quick to buy another HP. As it turns out, I actually bought three of these in rapid succession, trying to get one that works. I'm finally looking to return the last one for good. First one gave a message that the ink cartridge door was open when it wasn't. I called HP, there was nothing they could do, so I returned it to the store for a trade. When I opened the second one, I discovered that it had been opened and returned before. I wanted to start with a fresh one, so I brought #2 back. The third one installed fine. Then I did the wireless setup wizard, and the printer said it was connected, and to press OK to continue. That's when it locked up. Only way to restart was to unplug -- which is not recommended -- and then plug back in while pressing #/6.
We did this a few times. We follow the same steps every time. Sometimes we succeed in getting the wireless to work. Most times it fails. Sometimes the printer works for a couple days, but often when we come in , it's locked up and we need to play the, "let's see if the printer will start today" game.
When it does work, it's incredibly noisy.
If I could give this thing a negative 5 I would.
What a shame that HP still has a reputation for quality, but sells such junk.
Wear your earplugs.......2007-11-13
I purchased this to replace a Brother MFC 9700, which was a workhorse but had horrible scanning software, which did not allow the user to set up a default scan mode for paper size and resolution, so I had to reset from their default every scan - tedious. I trusted reviews that the HP software was very good. It may be but it is not user-friendly, and I am having trouble figuring out how to save scan profiles and how it interacts with Acrobat, which at least was straightforward, if tedious on the Brother. Setting up the printer as a wired network printer was a challenge (with XP) although network set up seems to be a challenge with any component on Windows. The biggest weakness of the printer is that it is INCREDIBLY noisy. It is almost as if it were designed to make the most noise possible, and it shakes itself and my desk with every print and scan. It has the same effect on my blood pressure as a baby crying inconsolably, or two cups of strong coffee. If it were only the printing, I would chalk it up to it being an inkjet vs. the laser Brother, but scans are thunderous as well. Part of it may be due to its incredibly cheap construction, whihc admittedly was plain to see in the store. I plan to move it into a remote area, and use the Brother in my desk. Unless I can't figure out how to use the scan software as I had hoped, in which case you can buy this printer cheap on Craigslist. As we all know, retail stores unfortunately don't usually have demo machines to test out anymore. You can always return (maybe less the shipping and "restocking fee", but by the time one takes the printer out of its complex packaging and spends an hour assembling all the parts (which I didn't have to do with the Brother two years ago), the thought of dismantling and repackaging is a strong deterrent to returning the product.
Make Sure You Consider This!.......2007-11-08
I've had the unit for 3 months. Two complaints (everything else is ok by me). 1. The fax machine can print a receipt but it can not print a receipt that shows a portion of the faxed document. It only shows the date, time, pages and phone number. Not the fax's content or a portion thereof. Hence, you have NO WAY of proving the content of a fax. After decades of fax machines being around, how a company can not include this is beyond me. If you need to prove anything was ever faxed DO NOT PURCHASE THIS. IN FACT, THIS MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE WHOLE LINE. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK! Second, it's loud when printing....Everything else has been what I expected.

Unable to install HP 7580 All-In-One .......2007-12-30
I am a retired IBM service person who spent his last 4 years working under contract to support PCs, Networks, Servers, Firewalls and PC software for a state agency. I presently support PCs, Networks, and PC software for a school system and sometimes think I have some knowledge but am unable to install the HP 7580 All-In-One printer on one of my PCs in my home network. I have had about 4 other printers that I have installed on this network over an 8 year period and have never had problems with installing a printer until now. I think I will also switch to another name brand. I talked with HP support about this problem and they said it was because of my router setup limiting the local network. I realized the tech did not have the knowledge to help so I got off the support line to use my time more constructively. Do not buy this prinbter or return it and get something else.
I was a staunch supporter of HP print and scan devices until I ran into this one. My operating system is Windows XP Pro with the latest updates applied.
HP not for me!!.......2007-12-28
I spent many hours to get the scan function to work. Via HP support emails, I was given 20 pages of possible fixes. Well they did not work. In addition, I could not network the printer. It was not recognize on the other computer.
I gave up and returned it to the store. I have bought a Canon MP530. Took me a hour to install on my computer and five minutes for the other computer to recognize the networked printer.
Disappointed with HP. Maybe it will work fine on other computers. But not here. I had always liked HP. My 9 year OIA died. It had serve us well.
Solves office machine clutter problem.......2007-12-28
The HP Officejet Pro L7580 Color All-in-One really replaced four individual and aging pieces of office equipment in my home office. The installation to my IMac was flawless though time consuming. I have been using the HP Officejet Pro L7580 for two months and have found it to be trouble free and efficient. I am a heavy user of the print, fax and copy functions and have found all to be excellent. I rarely use scan feature so can not comment. Quality of documents, both in print and photo, is excellent. Speed is adequate and construction seems sturdier than lower priced models of HP and other makes.
I highly recommend for those whose space has become cluttered with office machines but, like me, have been wary of multi-function solutions. The HP Officejet Pro L7580 Color All-in-One is a fine solution to the clutter problem
Don't buy HP All in Ones on Windows.......2007-12-23
The software that comes with these devices is excessive garbage. The whole setup is basically designed to sell more ink. Our printer gets into a mood where it constantly resets itself whenever you try to print with less than 10% of ink remaining. It whirs and grinds for about 3 minutes, then flashes on and off. All of this is a result of the feeble software it comes with- it takes ages to install, a sure sign that it is doing too much.
I took a similar HP all in one and plugged it into my Mac Pro desktop, never letting an HP CD near the machine. It brought up a little picture of the printer and just worked.
If you put the Windows CD in, even on XP, it's the beginning of the end for you. Don't buy one of these things. I'm going back to my Xerox scanner and Samsung color laser printer. They might not be "all in one", but they work flawlessly.

The bundle software does not install in Leopard. I need to make a "customizable" install...
In package, open "install" folder, ctrl+click in HP Installer and select show package
go to Contents\Sub Installers folder, and make a manual install of all packages.
Great Printer!.......2007-12-25
We are using this printer at our small business where our staff keeps it very busy. It is keeping up perfectly and doing a great job of everything. Print quality is far superior to the cheaper machines.
BEWARE!!!.......2007-12-20
This is probably one of the worst products I have ever purchased. It simply won't work. The first one I got didn't work at all. It never fed a single paper. After spending a day on the phone with HP support who tried to help me "fix" the printer although I insisted it was dead an needed a replacement, they finally agreed to replace it. The second one I got was a little bit better. At least it feeds paper sometimes, but only if you buy the very highest quality paper. If you feed it lighter, cheaper paper, or if it is even a millimeter out of alignment, you get yourself a paper jam.
Something must have gone very wrong in the design phase of this one. It simply doesn't seem to work.
This printer does not work.......2007-12-20
I bought this printer to replace a D135. The printer software does not work with Vista. Flat out. One of the techs wanted me to format my hard drive on a new Sony Vaio so I could reinstall vista with the printer being the first device installed. Tech support in India sucks. Level 2 and 15 hours later could not get the software to communicate with the printer. Poor product.
Painful to use.......2007-12-07
We got this as a replacement for the fax we had in our office. We do get a lot of faxes, and I will say the quality of print is good. Also the printing is quick.
HOWEVER, the tray is somewhat difficult to load. It takes forever to start the fax, and if you walk away thinking the fax has gone through, you will probably come back to find out it did not!
It cannot run more than 2 fax jobs at a time. Tonight I had 3 pieces of paper to send to 3 different places. It took me 10 minutes.
The buttons are not intuitive. There are 46 buttons on this machine and you could be staring at them for hours if you are not familiar with it.
The next time I get a machine, I am getting just the fax and leaving all the fancy stuff like copying and scanning for machines that are built for it.

A Great Printer.......2007-12-02
I just bought this printer from Office Max a couple weeks ago, and I really like it, especially the tray that will hold half a ream of paper. I've used the built-in scanner to post book-cover pictures on Amazon, and it works great.
The print cartages are not refillable, though, but I had a bad experience with refillable cartages. In my old HP printer, one of them leaked and made a huge mess. Actually, it worked out great when because I took my printer back to Office Max where I bought it three years ago and where I got the cartages filled, they gave me a $250 credit. So my new machine only cost $160.
If you are doing a lot of printing, the HPL7680 is the one to get. It's a real pain to keep loading paper. Check the paper capacity if you're tempted to buy a cheaper printer.
