Loved this printer until the insertion of a black cartridge created a hole in the electronic components causing the printer to no longer work. But the good news is that HP says they will send a replacement free of charge even though it is out of warranty.

  This photo ink cartridge contains 1/3 black, 1/3 light cyan and a 1/3 light magenta. You replace your black cartridge with this photo color inkjet cartridge. It goes in the black slot, not the color slot. When you have the photo and regular color cartridge in your printer it produces better looking photos. Instead of only having four colors to print with (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow) it now has six colors. Photo inkjet cartridges are great for people who print lots of photos or color documents but not recommended for people who print mainly text. This is because the photo cartridge has about a third as much black ink in it compared with a black cartridge. Once this ink is out the cartridge has to be replaced. Even if the light cyan and light magenta sections are full of ink you will need a new cartridge. Printers these days print photos well with four colors but excellent with six colors.

I purchased my first 7210 in September of 2005. The ADF (automatic document feeder) failed after 2 months and would not feed properly, jamming faxes and feeding more than one page at a time. It was still under warranty so they replaced it. It was great for about 9 months and it started again with the ADF (feeding and jamming). They replaced that unit in November of 2006 and it was ok for another 9 months when became symptomatic again. I had purchased an extended warranty which was what saved me. They just replaced it for the fourth time again in November of 2007 (seems like every year in November I have to work on it again). The max copy/fax number is 5,000 but I do about 300 copies/faxes every month so that's not it. After going through the repair instructions (reset at least 6 times and cleaning with a lint free cloth and distilled water) from both online and by phone, they do send another one right out.

Phone Tech support can be difficult depending on whom you reach. Many have a heavy East Indian accent which creates more frustration by adding communication problems to the already compromised techno knowledge I possess. After asking to speak to the supervisor, we got the problem fixed but not until after the tech argued with me about my extended warranty program and after going through the manual of questions i.e. operating system, hookup, etc, etc. They did find it after I gave them the warranty number.

Jamie is a bright star though, he got right to the problem and made my day; he was in tech support somewhere in the world and actually listened to my complaint; I received that unit the very next day! However, that was the worst unit of all of them. It did not work from day 1. The picture card would not work, it jammed papers, there were lines down both sides of the copies even after cleaning. This was a remanufactured unit; most are refurbished. Refurbished means it is new but out of the box (floor model, etc.). Remanufactured means it had a problem and was supposedly fixed and tested before sending it out. I inherited some real problems.

I will buy HP again, however, will do research about the unit before I replace this one (after the warranty goes out). I suggest you keep a log of when you called, whom you talked to, what they said and keep your serial number, warranty numbers and ALL info and phone numbers handy in your user guide. That's what saved me! AFter going through more tech testing, they are sending me an upgraded unit.

Good features, good quality, very short life.......2007-08-30

Good print/fax/copy quality - although colors tend to fade when documents are scanned (and reprinted). Nice set of features for its time (about 3-4 years ago now).

BUT:

I have gone through 3 HP printers the last 3 years: A PSC 2210, an original OfficeJet 7210, and a warranty replacement for the same. All three broke down with internal firmware/hardware errors, each after a period of ever-more frequent paper jams - the latter 7210 broke down yesterday with a cryptic error message on the front panel (someting like "Error: 0xc500034441:some_file.c") and all LEDs blinking rapidly. According to the HP support person I spoke to, this indicates a hardware malfunction; the printer is by now out of warranty as well. That ended my relationship with HP printers.

I bought this for my parents and it's been a disaster from moment one. The first machine refused to run over the network despite myriad adjustments and phone calls to HP. Unit was replaced (with a remanufactured unit, of course) that also refused to run over the network and eventually stopped printing. Only after reading the riot act to HP did they send a third unit, which prints but won't scan over the network, and its ADF is DOA.

The driver is clunky, HUGE even when minimally installed, and takes an act of Congress to get off of your machine entirely.

HP used to charge a premium for a premium product. Now they charge a premium for garbage.

as a scanner.......2007-07-01

I got one used for $40. The previous owner said that it doesn't take print cartridges anymore. But I was more interested in using it as a stand alone scanner. I figured $40 not that much of a risk.

It works so it was worth the $40, I guess. But the software is horrible. Seems to run very inefficiently. It frequently gets confused and doesn't shut itself down correctly so that the next time I try to scan i get an error message that says its already running. NO IT ISN'T!

The software is also confusing and illogically organized. Make it simple, please.

The machine itself has a couple of problems. First, it takes FOREVER to shut it down. Press the power button and the LED screen sits on "Shutting down..." for about five minutes. Why? What could it possibly be doing?

Worst thing, when scanning a long document, about 50 percent of the time it says "problem with feeder." and it wants you to RESTART THE JOB! 30 pages into a 50 page document, that's pretty frustrating. Try to restart the job, that's when the software gets completely confused.

Glad I didn't pay $45.

Update: ok, i was trying to feed it documents that were stapled, my bad. SO the feeder works better than I said. Software still has problems.

Hp 7210 Officejet All In One Feeder defect.......2007-06-28

I chose this printer for the same rave reviews everyone else found online. However,the reviewers evidently didn't keep this all-in-one long enough to find it's faults.Yes it is a fairly good printer for the first year you own it. Seems after the warranty expires so does the printer. First comes the software update problems.After that there are feeder problems which require a printer expert to fix because no amount of adjusting will correct this problem on the 7210. The software is a constant battle with bugs and glitches in every new update. If you don't mind constantly reinstalling software,resending faxes by holding them just right,and reloading copies then buy this printer. It is for you. The software fax application that comes with this printer will not communicate with your computers from the printer if they are on a network you must know how to make it communicate by using hp's faulty software. To me, this is unacceptable especially for a small business relying on dependability in the fax, copy, and printer they choose. I advise going with the hp 7410. It is higher priced but well worth it since many of the most obvious glitches seem to have been worked out of it.
