Nearly 3 years of perfect service.......2007-12-27

Purchased in May of 2004, getting worn out parts warning December 2007. Our C84 has printed out massive amounts of video labels and color cd inserts at least five days a week. Color cartridgs were cheap and no problem because we bought them in the aftermarket (private label). Amazed others had so many problems, maybe we are just lucky.

Not that great.......2007-12-21

Ink is expensive and is used up quickly. If you go a few weeks without printing the inkjets dry up and you have to run a series of maintenance tasks to get it to print properly, however when you run these tasks it uses half the ink. I've now gone a couple of months without printing and now it doesn't print at all. Thinking the ink cartridge was damaged like a fool went out and forked out another 35 bucks just to be convinced the jets are dried up beyond repair. Ran the cleaning and aligning tasks and my new cartridge is now half empty and still not printing. Piece of junk. Was nice when I first got though but once you start changing the cartridges it goes down hill from there. Does not print in glossy. Nice and quiet which I also like in a printer. Ugly round shape.

2 for 2 failures.......2007-11-28

I bought my first C84 brand new several years ago for about $50.. so don't even think about paying 200 here! I don't remember were I got it though. In any event, it died after about a year of infrequent use... yeah, the quality was great when it worked, but the color print heads got jammed or something and it refused to print color. I sold it, and bought a used one for $10 bucks, and it died within the month. Very low quality. I strongly discourage anyone from buying this printer. And that's not to mention the fact that ink replacements cost as much as a new printer!

Good While it Lasted.......2007-08-27

I got the Epson C84 with my Macintosh four years ago, and it was a pretty good printer. Then it stopped working. No ink comes out when it prints even though there is ink in the cartridges. I suspect it's clogged. Cleaning with alcohol did not help. And, I've always used Epson brand cartriges. I plan to replace it with an HP.

Pile of Junk - AVOID -.......2007-07-12

Out of the 4 of these that we bought ALL 4 DIED within a year. It seems once that jam 1 time, they always complain of no ink even when you put new ink in. I later read about a class action suit against them specific to this problem. We could have gotten some small $ back, but it wasn't worth it. We threw em away.
Also, please ignore the 1 5 star review below this one. The guy can't even spell ca(r)tridge, and we WERE using only Epson cartridges. Everyone else's 1 star reviews are right-on.

I'll be short and to the point: my initial order was screwed up: instead of colored cartridges I was sent a black one, so I had to re-order. The re-order was shipped correctly, but the cartridges suck - they don't print any colors, although the printer reads them as full.

I got an Epson Stylus C-84 printer for free with my Mac a couple of years ago. Since then, I've probably cussed at that printer more than I've cussed at any inanimate object in my life. The ink is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! And it dries out and clogs the printheads like crazy. I clean and clean and clean the printheads and the printing gets WORSE! And cleaning uses ink! And the ink is expensive! It's a horrible, horrible circle of frustration. I just bought a Canon Pixma MP600 printer and can't wait to hook it up. But I'm waiting until the Epson's ink runs out before I do it. I want to use it all up because I don't want to waste any money. And when the ink runs out??? I'm gonna kick that Epson printer from here (near Detroit) to California. EPSON PRINTERS AND INK ARE HORRIBLE! DON'T LET THEM DRAIN YOUR WALLETS ANYMORE!!

I've Tried Everything........2007-06-09

I am pleased with the Epson factory branded original Dura-Bright ink cartridges. I'm not pleased with the price Epson charges for their cartridges, but... let me say that I have two printers, the C86 and a CX6600. On previous printers {not these two} I tried shortcuts to save money on ink costs. I tried refilling my own cartridges, which ended up costing a lot of time and money to accomplish, and was only marginally successful. I also tried buying recycled and non-branded cartridges. They never seemed to work in my printers very long without some sort of printing problems. Over the years, I probably tossed out ten reams of printing failures due to inkjet cartridge failures because of these feeble attempts to save money. Finally, I decided to just close my eyes, use the factory inks and pay the price. I have not had a single printing failure since. Not even one failure in two years. I'm convinced that in my case, the factory inks are the best answer to trouble free printing. Also, the Dura-Bright inks seem to work the best on my glossy paper.

Replacement inks are very expensive and only last a short time. The high capacity replacement cartridge is very reasonably priced, lasts much longer and shipping is free! I no longer buy my ink at BM shops. Amazon is great, no tax no hassle. My only gripe is how long it took to arrive at my door step, but then again, shipping was free.

I'm glad I found this product online and didn't have to pay the average price for it because it's not worth it.

It would be nice if Epson or the makers of this ink would find a solution to the clogging problem. If I don't use my printer at least once a week, the ink gets clogged and I have to run the "cleaning software" and waste half the ink to get it to print properly.

Not a cost-effective product.

Long lasting but clogs.......2007-11-15

I am on my second Epson printer, the first having been clogged using Epson inks. I have done a lot of research, and the issue is complex. First, there are two main types of ink, pigment based and dye based. Epson Durabright inks are pigment based inks. These produce better, longer lasting, and more water proof prints. However, they also clog the printer much more readily than dye based inks. Secondly, if you use your printer infrequently, the pigment inks are even more likely to clog.

So, if you use your printer a lot, and need the highest quality prints, use Durabright. Avoid 3rd party pigment based inks because variations in pigment particle size worsen the clogging potential. However, if you use your printer infrequently, or don't care about long lasting prints, and want to save some money, use 3rd party dye based inks. These are less prone to clog and are way cheaper. Apparently, mixing pigment and dye can be a problem, and there are various methods to online to purge the printer when switching. I've found that just printing a lot after switching is ok.

What, you noticed that ink vendors don't mention which type in their ads? Are you surprised?

CX 4600 - Another disposable printer from Epson.......2007-02-15

Got this lousy product bundled with a computer purchase and tried to use it sparingly but regularly. Yellow cartridge stopped working when still 1/3 full and so print head cleanings were attempted. Each head cleaning consumes about 1/8 of the ink, but I was able to print two more pages. Bought all new cartridges and installed them all at once according to instructions - printed one page black and magenta, then nothing at all. Repeated all head cleaning/test print and alignment tests until the ink was supposedly depleted - although none ever made it to a page. Installed my last set of ink cartridges and still nothing.

Total number of pages printed during the product's lifetime: 25 pages text + 16 Photos. Total average cost per page considering original purchase price + two additional sets of ink cartridges: Greater than $5 per page or photo! This product is only good for use as a prop when reenacting the "fax in the field" scene from the movie Office Space.

Epson maintains a high quality ink and cartridge design. The inks don't fade or clog up the printer nozzles. I caution those that use after-market refill cartridges that are not Epson Brand....My last printer was ruined by using a clone brand in an attempt to save a few bucks.

No clogging.......2007-06-15

We killed an earlier printer (Stylus Photo) using 3rd party carts. So we had been using genuine Epson Durabrite for our CX4600. We still often had problems with clogging, repeatedly cleaning heads, and having to discard half full (and expensive) cartridges. So we figured there was not much to lose trying this brand.

What a relief. This brand performs better than Epson from the standpoint of not clogging. There have been zero problems, and we have been through 4 carts. However, unlike durabrite, these inks *will* run when wet. So as long as you're not taking your printouts out in the rain, save a pile of money and aggravating head cleaning, and use these instead of the Epson brand.

The cartridges leak, the Epson printer noticed that they were not true Epson. The colors are faded and not true. Pay the price for Epson and be happy. I learned my lesson.

dye based inks.......2006-10-31

It should be noted that these are dye based inks, not pigment based inks, like the original manufacturer's inks (Epson's DuraBright ink). Supposedly this means they won't last as long. Research suggests they might be better from the perspective of clogging print heads, which I've read is a chronic problem on the printers that use the Epson DuraBright inks.

That aside, the cartridges seemed reasonably manufactured, and to the extent that the printer was working (it's a used model that needs the print head cleaned) they seemed to work OK.
