A fast printer, but versatile and professional it isn't.......2007-12-30
I bought this printer because of a great experience I had with other Brother printers and FAX systems. The previous unit I owned was an HL-1850 with a great MP tray. It was fast, reliable, consumables were inexpensive and it handled envelopes beautifully.
This printer while fast and network ready, it has the worst MP tray ever. It can only hold 6-7 envelopes (#10), it shreds and creases all envelopes no matter what speed the feed, it can't handle more than 10-12 sheets of plain paper. The printer can handle heaier stock, but it curls like a window shade.
I'm sorry I bought it. I should have done some homework. After I discovered it's huge flaws, I did some research on the net, and sure enough, the exact problems were described by others.
If you want pure speed and a network ready printer--it's fine. But if you need a versatile, reliable and professional printer, this ain't it.
Great value for money.......2007-12-19
I wanted a basic B&W laser for my home network. This fits the bill so far and for the $199 I paid it's terrific value.
The documentation could be better with easier to read diagrams and I wish the Vista CD had all the intro videos that are on the XP CD. It installed easily enough when connected to my router without needing to hook it up via a USB cable first.
It has been running beautifully for the month I've had it. The duplex works very well although you need to clear the output tray if you have more than 25 pages or so because of the way the duplexing works. I've had no trouble with dimming due to power draw on startup but I did put it on a separate outlet. The print quality is excellent and it's very fast. It's not designed for photo graphics but most lasers aren't - I'm going to get one of the ink-guzzling ink jets to handle that and use this for the majority of my printing.
Monster machine, in a good way.......2007-12-18
I was looking for a simple + fast B&W printer. It does the job. I had it for 3+weeks and no problems yet.
Good job, Brother.......2007-12-09
I have had this printer for about two weeks. It has very good print quality and speed and seems a bit more sturdy than some I looked at. I have tried the duplexing and it worked well, at least while the printer is still new. I have no idea why an earlier reviewer found that it uses too much power on startup. I have it plugged into my surge protector along with my computer, phone and a light and have had no problems. But the most favorable comment I have is about tech support. I had a question about networking the printer. The directions that came with the printer required some knowledge I did not have. I wrote an email late Sunday night, and expected to wait several days for a response. But when I turned my computer on Monday morning, there it was -- a fast response that perfectly answered my question. It turned out networking was a snap. Also, I dual boot my machine: half windows and half Linux. I am new to Linux and expected trouble. But printer set up was effortless.
Decent network laser.......2007-12-04
Good value for the money. Reliable, easy to configure using the Brother network administration software. Crisp, two sided copies. No complaints. Our small office has 3 of these and (using after market recycled toner cartridges), they are as inexpensive yet functional a network laser printer as is out there.

Quick Printing + Network Capable + Duplex = Great Value!.......2008-01-01
I am an IT professional and I know computers and printers. I needed a network capable laser printer for home use so that my kids could have something to print their school reports on. I never bought refurbished equipment before, but I'd thought I'd give this a try. Except for saying "Refurbished" on the box I coulnd not tell that it had ever been used before. Really, it was identical to a new printer.
I have had the printer for 4 months now and it works great. It set-up quickly with no problems. I really enjoy the quick start-up from sleep mode to print mode. One thing to note: like all laser printers, power consumption is high. Brother laser printers use more power than other laser printers I've used (HP, Xerox, and Lexmark). Lights dim when this unit starts up and prints. I have this same experience with the Brother Laser fax machines I use at work and needed to add battery back-ups to the computers on the same circuit to prevent brown-outs. Still, I'm very happy with this printer and recommend it.
Great HL-5250DN printer.......2007-12-23
Refurbished is GOOD! I've had this just under 2 months. Have printed 1,037 pages and 8 envelopes. About 6 jams so far, 3 of them experimenting with letter sized envelopes with the manual feed. Still comes out with maybe an edge smusched but it's reasonable. Not as good as my HP-5L with envelopes, but acceptable using MS Word "Envelopes and labels".
Paper has just a slight curl. Much better than with the HP-5L. When duplexing, the curl is not very noticable.
When printing a 'Print Settings' status it indicates status of consumables ('remaining life of'), like: PF KITMP (99.9%), PF KIT1 (98.9%), FUSER (98.9%), LASER (98.9%) and DRUM (95.7%). Seems like they will last quite a long time.
Attached through 'networking'. Five PCs on the network share the printer and one iMac G5 - 20/2. Works on either PC/iMac without problems! Unlike when you connect via USB or Parallel, you don't have to have the PC powered on & running for others to print!
Prints duplex from both PC and iMac. Easy setup in properties when printing duplex.
Printing at 600x600. Don't feel any need for a higher default setting.
Shockingly noisy when starting up with a clackely clack sound but you get used to that. The HP-5L was virtually noiseless.
Print speed is fast! Most of the time the printer is finished when you get walk up to it. I had to wait alot at the HP-5L.
Did buy a 256MB memory upgrade for a cheapo price. Uses older 144pin SDRAM SODIMM PC133, somewhat expensive compared to current 200pin DDR2 SODIMM PC5300 prices, so it's an ROI thing. The 512MB upgrade just wasn't worth the price.
Mine was 'manufactured' "September 2005".
Great printer.......2007-12-17
I have owned this printer about a month now and could not be more satisfied.
This printer replaces a Brother 2070N that worked great but needed toner too soon and the drum went bad with about 3000 pages.
New toner and drum would have cost me more than this new printer so this gives me a new drum with a much longer drum life and allows duplex printing.
great printer for price, small bugs.......2007-12-15
Printer works great, warms up quickly, prints fast and double sided printing's amazingly fast and reliable. its network printing allows me to print without pluging in my laptop and the printer is tucked away out of sight (though its a bit big...). only complaint is when printing with the mac os, not sure why, but i can't seem to alter the print settings in the print menu like i can on a pc over the web based settings. but its great price overcomes any of its small bugs.
Great Choice!.......2007-12-14
I am a medical student that requires several printouts (10-20 pages each) per day for class lectures. So this little unit has been getting alot of work for the past month.
Prior to this I had a HP inkjet...but it was eating ink so fast that it wasn't cost efficient (after like 50-100 pages it would give me low ink cartriage). So I decided to invest in a laser printer. I knew i wanted automatic duplex to save paper (better for environment)...my old HP had duplexing but required me to manually refeed the paper after 1 side printed.
I'm VERY pleased with this Refurbished model.
PROS: It came in a pretty big box, but was basically a new model (i could not tell what was wrong with it before...maybe they just replaced the drum unit). It prints SUPER fast...even on duplex...and I love the fact that it's network capable...bc it frees up an extra USB slot on my laptop and will one day allow my gf to print on the network too without having to mess with any cables. It only takes about 5 seconds to warm up, but it'll print right after that. ITS SUPER FAST - at least 20 pages a minute single sided...probably even 20 ppm on duplex. And it has a large tray underneath - holds like 200 or 250 pages at a time. I only print 8 by 10, and have not tried envelopes or 11 by 14 paper. It's not too huge either...just sits in my living room next to the wireless router.
CONS: The paper that comes out does have a slight bend to it on the 4 corners...nothing too bad, i just put them in my binder and it goes away on its own. I once printed 100 sheets in a job, and they curled up a little...prob cuz the printer got warmer...but still it wasn't a big issue. But if you were a small business and were printing this stuff for clients, i'd recommend a laser printer that didn't curl the corners. Also, the noise clicks that the printer makes may bother you upon start up...if you are printing right next to your own computer...but it doesn't bother me cuz its in a different room. If this model was in color and did not curl the corners...then it would get a 5 star rating.
ITS DEFINETELY AN UPGRADE from inkjet...(much faster and cheaper - i think it comes out to be only like 1 or 1.5 cents per page) and for the price, i dont think you could beat the network features plus true automatic duplexing. It shipped fast too.
If you are deciding whether to buy refurbished or new...i highly recommend the refurbished model (it's brand new to me).
This is my first review of an online item - so if this helped you, please let me know!
