I purchased two of these cases for two 500GB internal SATA drives. I wanted to use them as external drives. The cases cost a little more since they have a dual output - USB2 and eSATA. I thought the eSATA might come in handy if laptops start supporting it.
LIKES: I like the compact size and dual output nature. They are significanly smaller than products that come with cases already and are not that much bigger than the internal drive. The aluminum case does seem to keep the drive fairly cool but I added a small muffin fan blowing on the outside of the case to keep it closer to room temperature.
DISLIKES: Due to the compact nature, the power switch is on the back end (the end where the cables and power brick connects). The drive indicator/power light is also there. I managed to unsolder the LED and mount it on the front through a small hole I drilled near the edge. I ran three wires along the internal edge within a ridge and it all works well. However, for the cost this should have been done. I also had trouble with cheap parts. In particular the connectors on the USB cable did not fit well - they were loose and I kept getting write fault errors. I replaced the cable with a higher quality one I had around and so far it works fine.
In the end, I probably would have purchased a drive with a case already built in and skipped the future compatibility. By the time eSATA makes it to laptops (if ever), the drives will probably be ready for an upgrade anyway. I do not know if the eSATA will be that much faster due to the drive limitations (see eSATA on Wikipedia). Also, I don't know if, and what is the penalty for conversion from an SATA drive to a USB2 port.
Absolute Junk.......2007-04-02
Absolute junk. once you get the drive installed (for which there are no instructions - the instruction booklet only tells you how to install the drivers for various operating systems that no one has anymore), it is VERY difficult to get the computer to recognize it subsequent times. I had to reboot several times each time I want to see my data.

I needed a SATAII external enclosure because I accidently bought a SATAII hard drive instead of a PATA drive. I plugged in the wires to the drive and hooked it up to my computer. It worked just as advertised.
The only drawback is that it slightly more difficult to open than my metal gear box that I previously had. The screws are tiny (eyeglass size) and you have to take most of them out to remove the cover. The cover also does not fit just right without some effort. This minor inconvenience is worth it to me to get a good priced enclosure that does what it is supposed to do.

Poor Design - Fails.......2007-12-29
I use three of these for back-up drives that are rotated weekly - and was initially quite happy with them.
The problem:
Drives are only held in the case by plastic mounts located on the front of the case. Empty space at the back of the case is designed to allow the drive to remain cool. Because I switch drives weekly, the plastic mounts failed after about 7 months and the drives slide backward in the case - making it very difficult to connect - and defeats the cooling feature.
What it needs:
Side mounting screws to hold the drive securly in place - metal to metal not plastic.
I am replacing all three.

Thing worked great for the first few days, then it kept dropping off of the bus.
After looking at it the USB port on the back is just too big and loose. It wouldn't securely hold any cable (and I have lots of USB cables) I put in it.
Along with that, after opening the case to put the SATA drive into another enclosure I could smell something had been burnt.
I would say stay away as this thing will toast your drive, one way or the other. Kudos to Tiger Direct for being fast on the return and refund.

A week after owning this enclosure, the hard drive started clicking on and off and windows would not recognize the drive. After troubleshooting, I found the problem to be with the power connection to the drive. The hard drive works fine in another sata enclosure. Don't waste your money.
file corruptions frequently.......2007-09-10
I'm using this with a 400gb Western Digital harddrive on Windows XP system. First, I had hard time formatting and partitioning the drive with this case using native Windows XP tools. I finally used some commercial software. I transferred a lot of files into the harddrive via this case but there are too many file corruptions. I almost lost my important data, fortunately I had backup in DVD. Between the famous and reliable harddrive and this made-in-china case, naturally I think it's this drive that responsible for the file corruptions.

i purchased this item from tiger direct and it simply did not work. i tried several computers and even few hard drives.
eventually i had to pay for sending it back
