Linksys WRT600N Linksys Ultra RangePlus Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link

Product Description

The Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router is really four devices in one. There's the dual-band Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. There is also a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase its range and reduce Dead Spots in the wireless coverage area. To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. Security features - WEP - WPA - WPA2 Security key bits - Up to 256-bit encryption System Requirements - Internet Explorer 6.0 or Firefox 1.0, CD-ROM drive, Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP and Vista, and Network Adapter Dimensions - 7.48 x 5.71 x 7.01 (190x145x178mm) Weight - 1.51 pounds (683 grams)

1 out of 5 stars crashes.......2008-01-01

I have both Linkys WRT300N Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router and this WRT600N. Unlike 300N, this is a dual-band wireless router. Apparently, 5GHz does help in term of speed. 600N is about 50% faster than 300N, in 5GHz. The problem is, it crashes too often.

Every time, when I transfer a 700MB file, it crashes the router (about 500MB copied). I have to reconnect. WRT300N works much more reliable, although a bit slower.

4 out of 5 stars Linksys WRT600.......2007-12-28

The router works flawlessly after a very challenging set up adventure. The initial set up attempt was unsuccessful. I use the Vista Home Premium operating system. After 2 days of trying to configure the wireless set up using the Linksys provided configuration tool, I gave up. Wired set up was not a problem. After configuring the router for wireless operation with my laptop, the router recognized every wireless appliance on the network except for the laptop that I used to configure the router. I gave up after 2 days of unsuccessful attempts. Then I switched to the Windows Vista wireless configuration tool, and I was up and running in less than 5 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Performs as advertised, but ..........2007-12-22

I purchased this item for two reasons- improved range and security. It performs as advertised. The instructions are straightforward and written for both the average and advanced users - your choice as to how. Setup was easy, advanced settings went smoothly but... I lost wireless access for a MAC and MAC laptop to connect. Nowhere was this stated either in the instructions (after the fact, yes) or in the reviews. This can be circumvented if you choose to use ethernet cables but doesn't that defeat the purpose? All worked out well - my MAC user can conveniently "borrow" internet access from a friendly neighbor's unsecured router ( an older linksys).

1 out of 5 stars Where is the dual-band mode?.......2007-12-12

Very flaky router. I could not get it to work consistently (lots of dropped connections, redundant rescanning, etc..) without turning off one of the bands. Works wells now after many wasted days playing with the router configuration for the best operation. Works well in the N band only mode (turn off dual-band). This kind of defeats the purpose of purchasing this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Linksys SUPER Router WRT600N.......2007-12-03

I've had this router for about a month now. It replaced a low cost G Router that constantly lost connection with our DSL Modem. So far, the WRT600N has been rock-solid, never losing its connection to the modem. Even though we haven't invested in the N network cards for our laptops, we're getting great connections throughout our 3700 Sq Ft house. It's not cheap, but so far, it's worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Great NAS for what it is.......2007-07-05

This drive is a single HDD IDE enclosure which will sit on your network. I found the included software (Nero's BackitUp) to be a little vague as to which option is the "monitor the changes and back those up".

Additionally there are two user configurations that could have been explained a little better in the manual. There is the Network Access (Local) and then there is the FTP Server. This is the configuration for the external access. If you want to serve up music to your friends but don't want them to have access to your other files, you can set that up here. Again, limited information provided from d-link, but it is pretty self explaining when you're navigating it.

I am currently using a 250 GB 7200 Maxtor with 16MB Cache. I find this is more than adequate for my use. This drive is automatically placed into your workgroup settings making it very easy to map for other computers. The only downside is that it doesn't have a built in print server. I also don't use it for an access point, so I'm thankful that you are able to turn that feature off.

I have been using this unit (Rev B, thankfully) for over a year and weathered the firmware update to expand over the 2GB file transfer issue. I also run the DGL-4300 gaming gigabit router and two DGS-2208 gigabit switches. I upgraded to gigabit SOLELY for this NAS drive. It makes an enormous difference when transferring files to the drive. I can sustain file transfers well over 130Mb/s which is comfortably above the 10/100 limit of most networks. You'll also notice that the infrastructure is all D-Link. Probably doesn't make a huge difference, but I switched after using Linksys exclusively. Now I doubt I'll use anything but D-link.

1 out of 5 stars Poor product, poor service........2007-04-29

Purchased DSM-G600 (B1); upgraded firmware to 1.02. Very difficult to configure and setup. Will not recognize any drive over 250 GB. This is not documented anywhere except in an obscure FAQ page on the D-Link web page. Tech support is not worth the time. I was disconnected multiple times. I knew more about the product from reading online documentation then tech support did. Returned for a refund. Save your money, save your time. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this device.......2007-01-16

    Slow wireless transfer speeds
No way to automatically power-on after a power failure.
The web interface was confusing and hard to navigate.
It wouldn't recognize my NTFS formatted data drive. I was forced to format the thing and spend hours transferring the same data back onto the drive.
I'm a pretty flexible guy but it just wasn't a useful addition to my network, so I returned it.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to the specs on the box.......2007-01-14

Gigabit? The speeds are about 5-6 megabytes per second. Does that sound like Gigabit?
Since it is a file server you would expect to be able to have multiple shares right? wrong. Only one at any one time.
Mac compatible? Hardly. It's more like the Mac can connect, but it doesn't have Appleshares or Appletalk/IP.
The UI is really bad. I updated to 1.02 of the firmware, but that didn't help any of these problems. Other than that it was great.

4 out of 5 stars Keep your install disc handy..........2007-01-14

This unit was delivered the day before I bought my hard drive. Being the impatient person I am, I went ahead and connected it to my network and configured it before putting the hard drive in.

After installing the hard drive the next day, I could not get the built-in web interface to recognize it. It was only after a while of troubleshooting that I decided to stick the CD in and Voila! it worked.

I agree with the other reviews that this unit is loud. Even in my utility room with the door shut, it almost sounds like someone in the distance is blowing the horn on their car.

I also can't seem to get it to transfer at gigabit speeds. I have CAT6 running from my computer, to my gigabit switch, and I'm also using the provided CAT5e to go from the switch to the D-Link device.

The switch reports that they are both on a gigabit network, but the speeds tell a different story. I'm not going to blame it on the unit though b/c it could very well be a bad configuration on my part.

The documentation is lacking and, for that reason, I wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart. You may find yourself doing a lot of troubleshooting to make it work.

Also, I'd like to stress I'm using this as a *backup* for all my important video, pictures, etc.

    For two reasons:
    1. It's always good to have your important stuff physically existing in two places
    2. If this piece of equipment goes bad, or if you accidentally perform a hard reset (something not documented), then you'll have to format your hard drive to get it in operating condition again (see Circuit City reviews for more info).

The drive itself is formatted as either EXT2 or EXT3, and that's not Windows Compatible. I also could not get it to mount when I took the hard drive out, put it in my computer and booted using a Live Linux CD Distro (tried Ubuntu and Dam Small Linux). It recognized that there was a drive. Even noticed how big it was. However, it just would not mount. Again, this might be a limit on my expertise, but it does let me know that if this unit goes bad, I'll need to reformat.
I still like it though. It is perfect for my needs.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor usability & compatibilty problems.......2006-06-04

For me, the AXIS OfficeBasic USB Wireless G Print Server did not work. I suspect that, because it did not receive its Internet address over the wireless network, that the print server could not talk to my Linksys WRT54G router using WPA. The router might have worked on an unsecured wireless LAN or a WEP wireless network. However, I prefer the security of WPA, so I opted to return the unit.

I should mention that the unit is difficult to setup. My wife and I are both software developers and it took us 3 hours to conclude the unit was incompatible with our network. Also, the unit's usability is low due to: lack of error notification (e.g. there was no error notification when DHCP could not be negotiated) and no way to reset the unit to factory defaults without connecting to the unit's web server. If you think about it for a moment, the problems this poses are frightening.

Adding insult to injury, this is the most expensive print server you can find. It has the many features, but suffers from poor usability. Your luck may be better than mine, however.

Linksys WRT350N Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link

              Product Description

The Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link is four devices in one. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter and you can get to your files from anywhere in the world through the Internet. The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 3 times farther than standard Wireless-G. To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N and gigabit wired networking is ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, with no degradation in performance.

              Amazon.com Product Description

The Linksys WRT350N Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link is really four devices in one. The fastest and most advanced wireless solution currently available, this unit provides you with wireless access, connects your various devices or computers at high speeds, provides hassle-free storage options, and acts as a server to allow you access to your data and media from virtually anywhere. With the Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link at the center of your home or office network, you can easily add storage, share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers and multi-player games, and run media-intensive applications at amazing speeds, without the hassle or expense of stringing a lot of wires.

This Linksys Wireless-N Router with Storage link provides you with a Wireless Access Point (WAP) that lets you connect to the network without wires, and a built-in, four-port, full-duplex 10/100/1000 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to one-gigabit speeds. A built-in router function ties everything together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, while a Storage Link feature lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives, or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient means of accessing your portable data files. There is also a built-in Media Server that streams music, video, and photos from an attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter, allowing you to get your files from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

The Access Point built into this router uses the very latest in wireless networking technology -- Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple-In, Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Whereas ordinary wireless technologies are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually makes use of these reflections to increase the range while reducing dead spots in the coverage area. This means the signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections at up to three times the distance of standard Wireless-G, so the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. This Wireless-N router is fully backward compatible, so it works great with standard Wireless-G and -B devices, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N enabled, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band. This allows speeds up to 15 times that of standard Wireless-G. As a further convenience, unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. For especially congested areas, there is a good neighbor mode that makes sure the router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up all the available radio band.

To help protect your data and privacy, this router can encode all its wireless transmissions with iron-clad, 256-bit Wireless Protected Access (WPA2) encryption. This unit can also serve as your network's DHCP server, includes a powerful SPI firewall to protect your all your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN (Virtual Private Network) pass-through for the ultimate in network security. Despite all its features and functionality, configuration is simple and easy, thanks to the included web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N and gigabit-wired networking is ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and voice-over-IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time, without worrying about a degradation in performance.

This Linksys router features four Ethernet ports with numbered LEDs that indicate device connection and activity, LEDs indicating power, Internet activity, wireless activity, and security, as well as a top-panel button that is reserved for future functionality. There are ports for power, Internet, and Ethernet (four), a reset and security button, and three antennas. This unit uses CAT 5 cabling, and allows WEP, PSK, PSK2, and Radius security features, as well as 64 and 128 WEP key bits. The Linksys WRT350N is FCC, CE, and IC-03 certified, runs on 12-volts via an included adapter, measures approximately 1.57 x 6.93 x 7.4 inches (WxDxH), and is backed by a manufacturer's limited three-year warranty.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Hardware Very Very Poor Firmware.......2007-12-29

This Box Is Great Piece of Hardware but the LinkSYS standerd firmware sucks, it needs a reboot daily because it hangs and the performance of the USB is very very slow
I had to change the firmware to the dd-wrt firmware and now we can play.
It is very good box if you are a computer geek because you will learn how to handle and fix it.
If you are a regular user do not try to buy it or you will get very disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed but ultimately disappointing bag from Linksys.......2007-12-02

This is my third Linksys router, and in general I have been very pleased with their products. I bought this one for the claimed increased range, and I was also interested in the storage link feature.

Basic setup was a breeze, and the router came up on my home network flawlessly in a matter of minutes. The range is noticeably better than my trusty 54G, but not by much. I was certainly expecting more based on the claims.

The storage link feature is very confusing. I was unable to use it with my Drobo, which works perfectly as a directly attached device. The documentation of this feature is completely inadequate, and judging by the experiences reported here, calling Linksys customer service is not much help. Storage link may indeed work in some cases, but I am unwilling to make the investment of time in phone calls to figure out how to get it to work for me. I have to agree with others here that Linksys has released this product prematurely.

2 out of 5 stars Ver 1.0 of this router still has major firmware problems........2007-12-02

This review is for the version 1.0 router with Broadcom chipset. Linksys has a habit of selling the same hardware with completely different internals, later versions of this router have a Marvell chip set and users with this chip set may have a different experience.

I bought this router in the hopes that I could replace a 12 year old OpenBSD/DEC Alpha box that had been doing my routing reliably for a number of years. I wanted something that would use less power, provide fast wireless, QOS and reliable routing. I purchased this router even after reading the poor reviews. I hoped the latest firmware would have most of the problems fixed. This was not the case. The router was fast when it was working, but it required daily reboots, or more than daily if it was under high load.

I have since re-flashed the router with DD-WRT v24 RC3 3rd party firmware (only works on ver1 of this router) and have not had to reboot the router since. I really cannot figure out how the single guy that maintains DD-WRT can create a more reliable firmware than Linksys/Cisco. I am glad the hardware works, and that I can use the router with DD-WRT... but I am very disappointed with the product out of the box from Linksys.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2007-11-25

I wasted $200 by purchasing the router. Wireless connection keep dropping every two days and you need to reset the router, wireless range is very less when compared to WRT54. Stay away from the router. I really don't understand how linksys can release such a worst product.

1 out of 5 stars Highly Unreliable router........2007-11-20

I replaced an old D-Link wireless router with the latest from Linksys and my troubles started. The router was a piece of cake to setup and ran fine for a couple of days. A power interruption and, try as I could, I failed to get the wireless devices to access it. Replacement product took two months to arrive and same story repeated. Replacement one worked fine for a day and then wireless devices could connect to it but not the internet.
Support asked me to upgrade the firmware and again it worked for a day. Then support asked me to change frequencies. Worked again for a day and then stopped. Wireless communication when I replace it with my old DLink is perfect but I have had multiple sessions to trouble shoot what works fine for a while and with no changes decides to quit and I have spend hours trying to resolve issues and it has been days now that one problem or the other keeps appearing. I regret my decision and strongly vote against the product which I bought because of the Cisco name associated with Linksys.
