Nice product with 1 huge flaw.......2005-06-03

This review is for firmware v3102-Standard_OS of this device. Keep in mind that this product offers many optional services and upgrades which can significantly increase the functionality and price.

The TZ170 has a nice, easy-to-navigate web-mgmt interface. It strikes me as a polished, quality OS. Overall features are consistent with Linksys and Netgear models costing about half as much. The unit I tested got very hot on the bottom-center, so use in a well-cooled area. The case is plastic, but well-made.

Now the flaw: this unit, like many similar models, allows you to create access-rules to permit traffic (usually incoming) on certain ports. There is a long list of pre-defined services and you can create custom-services also. Each service has a check-box for "Enable logging", so it would seem all you need to do is check the corresponding log-category and you're good to go - NOPE. It turns out that the unit will only log dropped packets , or as the admin guide says, "blocked connections". I spent a long call to Sonicwall tech support, during which time the rep went and talked to his manager, to confirm this lack of functionality.

This means, for the power-user or admin who wants their daily log-email to show the previous night's successful PPTP or Remote-Desktop pass-through connections, they are out of luck. Some shops will not care, but as most of the entry-level firewalls I am familiar with have this functionality, I was shocked to find out this unit could not do it.

If you do not need pass-through logging, this unit is worth considering.

The Gold Standard in Firewalls - Cheap.......2007-08-29

I have deployed Checkpoint's regular products in the past and the only big downside was the cost. This product delivers the gold standard in firewalls for a trivial amount and Checkpoint's GUI configuration tool is one of the best.

That said, Checkpoint's support has never been anywhere near as strong as Cisco's or IBM's, but I have rarely ever had to call them with their main line products and never with the Sofaware line. Checkpoint seems to have gotten by their on-line subscription problems, and this now works well.

I have used several of these Sofaware boxes for office to office VPNs and it is dead simple to setup. The anti-virus scanning works well, although I have had to turn it off, for outgoing mail only, because of some timeout issues delivering mail to Africa. If you are going to use the spam filtering you need to know that this solution requires you to re-route your mail to Checkpoint's spam scanners, which then forward the mail along to your internal mail server; you will need to fuss with your DNS MX records.

Firmware updates of the firewall software are automatic and transparent. This is a major plus as getting updates to a Cisco PIX and many other firewalls, too, involve a manual firmware update.

Nice appliance - support is horrendous.......2006-11-07

I recently bought a Safe@Office 500 for our small office. The appliance itself is very nice, throughput is decent. The issue pops up when you subscribe to antivirus and support. The division of checkpoint that handles this is Safaware. Their website is currently broken so you can't register (11/4/06). This of course does not stop them from getting you to buy subscriptions through the appliance... unfortunately you can't use them. There is chat help on the sofaware website but you can't use it if you are not signed in which of course you can't do. No support numbers are listed in any of the documentation. It took three calls to Checkpoint to get a number. The tech answered "hello"... no company name. I could barely hear him... he blamed it on a VOIP connection to India.

Most of what we were able to figure out we did on our own, a waste of two business days. We still cannot figure out how to subscribe to or use the antispam features. Getting the right ports open for Quickbooks was not easy. The wireless and wired are on a different range of IP addresses, so you will not see any peer to peer networking without mapping the directories.

Great little appliance, terrible support.

I purchased this item. Works fine as a firewall router. But VPN features do not work. All email and web contact to manufacturer is blocked. The only way to get a fully functioning unit with technical support for setup is to buy a 1 year service contract for $179. Amazon should include a footnote to the item description on their site that technical support for this unit is only available at extra cost.

Broadband Office ANYWHERE!.......2007-02-17

First off, let me say that I was in desperate need of broadband and we were having so much trouble getting wired connection into our building, we looked for alternatives. The Sonicwall came up as a Wireless Broadband router/firewall in one so we got one and stuck a WWAN PC card (from a laptop) into it and...

BAM! Now the whole office has secure broadband access from this little box. Amazing! We might just not even deal with getting wired broadband.

As far as carriers, I would recommend Sprint or Verizon for access in the U.S. as I hear the speed and coverage is best. This thing really is like the manual says, an "office on a park bench".

Only thing is that for some reason, the photo on this site says "WiFi G", but this box is just wired on the LAN side. Even though the Internet coming in is wireless (cellular), you'd have to get a SonicPoint or some other wireless access point to have wireless LAN. No matter for us though, we're wired for the moment.
