Great little switch.......2007-11-12
I bought this one to replace a Dlink gigabit switch in my home network. The Dlink was running way hot, especially as my cat loved to sleep on top of it. It died, no doubt because of the heat. This one is still warm, but not nearly as hot. So the cat doesn't sleep on it as often. The case on the Trendnet is more solid. It is quiet (fanless) . It is my favorite color (blue). And it has 8 fast gigabit ports and is very affordable.

For a small network this switch is a dream. Full level-2 switch, so it easily allows multiple, very high speed point-to-point connections without slowdown or packet collisions. Very well built with a sturdy metal housing. Would highly recommend.

I have had this product for about a week and so far it has yet to work as anticipated. I have called tech support twice and waited for approximately 30 minutes to no avail. After 10 minutes someone will tell they will call you right back which never happens. If you call back and complain you will spend the rest of your life on hold. Don't waste your time or money, it is a dud.

Purchased this in Feb, since I was looking for a 1 gig switch with more than 5 ports for under $60. This met my needs and had great reviews. The switch is fantastic and built very well, it's made from metal, not like a lot of the cheaper 1 gig switches that are made out of plastic. Very happy with the purchase.

I have a mixed network, the 100Mb speed is excellent. I only have one Gigabit node so I can't tell you about that performance. It's absolutely quiet since it's fanless and the size is right.

Works Well, Very Fast, Very Hot.......2007-10-21
I have been using SMC for years and the one thing about them is they are are trouble free. The EZ 10/100/1000 Switch is no exception. Just plug it in and it works. You might say that's to be expected from a switch but not so. One thing I would have to do from time to time is use a crossover cable to connect multiple switches. Not any more. The EZ switch automatically detects the need and does the work for me.
As for speed, I can't tell you how much nicer gigabit networking is than 100mb for transfering large files. Suffice to say that everything is gigabit now. 100mb just doesn't cut it.
My one complaint is that, as has been reported, the device is hot, very hot. Thus the 4 stars. Make sure it is placed in a very well ventilated area. Between this, my Plasma TV and my Xbox 360, I'm looking forward to winter.

The title speaks for itself. Watch out for their lifetime limited warranty, it's good for about a year and a half. I guess that must be the lifetime of some kind of horsefly or something.

I'm a big fan of SMC products and this one is no exception. For a little more money than their competitors they give you a more solid, more capable device. In this case, it is support for jumbo frames that sets them apart. You really need jumbo frames to take full advantage of Gigabit Ethernet and as far as I know, SMC is the only company including that feature in their consumer-grade switches.
I've used this for about 6 months now with not a single glitch or problem to report. The only drawbacks are cosmetic: the non-rectangular form makes stacking a bit of a problem, and it is so light that the ethernet cables connected to it tend to push it around.

It works most of the time, but about once a month freezes up. Removing and reapplying power brings it back to life, but you could waste a lot of time trying to figure out why your network isn't working if you have several components to check.

Inexpensive jumbo frame switch.......2006-08-23
For those of you that need a small switch that can support jumbo frames, this (and it's 5-port brother, SMC8505T) are great solutions. I do not know of any other vendor that supports jumbo frames on its smaller switches and some don't even do it on their larger switches. Also, unlike what a previous reviewer said, you do not have to have all hosts on the switch supporting jumbo frames. When a tcp connection is initiated, they negotiate the mtu. We have found that jumbo frames makes a big difference not only in large rtt (round trip time) environments, but also in local file transfers and it also reduces the interrupts on the system. I loaned the switch to a user who had problems with the power supply (it had been working fine in my area for over a year). As it turns out, he did not have it on a surge protected power strip. I called the SMC help number 1-800-SMC-4YOU (1-800-762-4968) and they explained that the switch was covered under warranty but not the power pack but that they would send out a replacement one for $10. It arrived in a few days (quicker than they had indicated). The switch is now up and running (and on a surge protected power strip).

I love the metal casing. Every networking kit should be like this, as Iým tired of fancy plastic cases that then canýt be stacked along other devices.
Oh, did I mention that it supports "Jumbo Frames" up to 9k in size?. I tested it with the Gigabit Linkstation and it was faster than my old Linksys.

I agree with the others who posted after they encountered a problem with the product. This product is fabulous when it works, but if if goes dead on you, you are own your own. It worked great for a few months before it died. I tried to negotiate customer support with a very poor telephone connection to India, speaking with a person who understood little English. The U.S. tech support office could offer no help when I tried calling them later.
Since these routers are all the same, buy from a company with good tech support.
