Good quality, decent comfort.......2007-10-19
This is the first professional headset I purchase. This Sony are the entry level product of the "professional" line.
I use the headset with a multieffect pedal board (with a guitar, of course) and the sound is clear and rich. I also tried to watch a DVD and the result was excellent.
I can't say about other applications but considering the price (I paid 35$ for a refurbished set) they have been a good deal.
Secret Weapon for Home Recording.......2007-09-28
First of all, I am perplexed at how a springsteel headband can be broken easily, as in one of these reviews, and how you can "blow out" a set of headphones after a short amount of usage. Both of those are what I would consider COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE usage of a set of headphones, and definitely not good for your long-term hearing capacity on the latter review.
That being said, I have newly re-discovered these phones, and have found them to be more valuable than I ever thought possible. I had received a pair for free when I ordered a Korg digital studio. At first the sound seemed somewhat thin, but after many pairs of VERY EXPENSIVE headphones, I found out that the Korg unit was to blame, and the unit itself has since been discontinued by the company. After acquiring a new multitrack and using my many sets of headphones, I have found that the MDR-7502s produce the flattest, most real-world sound of all the phones that I have. The highs are perfect and not over-stated or overly thin, like in most audiophile phones. They give perfect flat mids and lows, without boosting their depth. In fact, with the combination of my new BOSS multitrack and the 7502 phones, I can mix completely inside the phones, transfer the mix to CD and it plays in a home stereo or car system with the most impressive sound that I've ever attained from a studio, whether in a home or professional environment.
I used to throw these phones around and just use them for iPod applications and such... now I treasure them and keep them in a case wherever I go. All my other phones are now paperweights on my desk. I will be ordering several more sets so I have backups for the coming years.
If you are recording at home or the office and need to have a set of phones that will allow you to mix completely inside your head, these are VERY inexpensive workhorses that will not let you down.
I'm writing this to help out further home studio techs that have searched endlessly, like I have, to find a set of phones that will allow you to mix at a decent volume without disturbing the neighbors and still produce a professional product.
I hope you find this review enlightening. My music has been completely renewed.

I must say, these are one of the best headphones I have ever gotten. The sound is amazing, and they stay on very well (although a bit large). Another thing I like about these is it has a long cable so it works extremely well with my computer. Best Headphones ever!

Great sound but I can't use them for over 90 min in one session - otherwise my ears are too hot. I wear glasses and didn't find these headphones a problem with that.

I congratulate those other reviewers that have had good luck with these and wish them well. I got mine. I used them for maybe a month, and not that often mind you. They blew out and died. They didn't sound that great..not that bad..better than those stupid earbuds that generation Y cell phone earwax hip-hop are into. These are defiantly not for environmentalists because mine are destined for the landfill. Total garbage.

Good Low-End Headphones.......2007-10-30
I bought a set of these after reading many dubious reviews of all sorts of headphones in this price range. First of all, they are very light and comfortable, and you can wear them for hours with no problems. Secondly, they sound good to me: they have a nice full sound that is a lot better than anything I have listened to in a long time. Thirdly, they seem well constructed for the price.
For the price of these things, they are really good in my opinion. If you want some headphones in this price range, this may be just what you are looking for.
Decent headphones.......2007-09-13
The AKG K66 headphones are probably the best open-backed headphones you can get for such a low price. They are open-backed, so don't plan on using them to listen to Iron Maiden at full volume in some public place and expect to get away with it. Very comfortable and fairly durable, these headphones are good investment if you don't have the cash to get those ridiculously high-priced Bose headphones you've been dreaming about.

They don't swivel, so they can be incredibly uncomfortable. Everyone else can hear perfectly what you are listening too (that's bad.) They are pretty distorted, and the bass is about as powerful as a metronome. I was given them for free, and I am going to replace them with a pair of SONY 700s

When I received the package, the style of the box that the headphone came in looked really old.
The presentation of the item in the box reminds me of the past decades.
Anyways, the headphone is good in general, great sound output clearity, fair wire length, and foldable design.
However, the down part is that it hurts user's (at least myself) ears after 15 minutes or so, and the pain cannot be ignored.
(the cup diameter might be the cause, so if you have big ears, make sure to consider this factor.)
Excellent headphones.......2006-12-16
I've had these headphones since 2000. They are the best headphones I have ever used. They are very durable, have great sound, and you can order replacement parts from Sony. I have used them for live sound production and love the reversible, swivel earcups. Another nice feature is the built-in adapter plug which allows them to be used with either 1/8" headphone jacks or 1/4" headphone jacks. The only part I have had to replace is the earpad cushions due to wear (and those were kind of expensive to order from Sony).
Good sounding headset.......2006-11-10
My only complaint is that the head set is a bit on the tight side (for me) which is not adjustable. I have a small head so this is surprising to me. If you like a very tight sealed fit, these are just the thing, they completely cover my ears generally well. In a long session and if you wear glasses they can cause a bit of uncomfort being so tight... Maybe in more time they will loosen up a bit?

Good Start to Getting a Serious Set of Headphones.......2007-02-01
I actually bought this set somewhere else where I had a gift certificate and they seemed the best for the price for what that retailer offered. I currently have a pair of Sennheiser PX 100 to compare to that are totally awesome but they sit on the ear. This pair wraps around your ear and blocks out the sounds around you and keeps the sound in so you get a better directed effect from the speakers. They are pretty snug, yet comfortable. The sound is pretty awesome though I am sure better headphones can be had but from what I have read you will need to drop at least $100 more. There are not many reviews on this set so I took a chance and, so far, on day one, I am happy after a couple hours of continuous use. I have yet to hear any distortion and the highs are crisp and the lows robust. I am listening to iTunes on the laptop and enjoying it. I tuned iTunes Music Enhancer off since it seemed to cause some background hiss. Anyway, good set for the price with good sound and good build quality.
Solid Pro-sumer Headphones.......2006-12-26
I'm a wanna-be audiophile (as in i dig the audio quality but dont want to lose my wallet for it) so decided to ask for the ath-t44's for christmas. opening today i like the sound, good all-around tones but i'm not audiophile enough to pick out deficiencies in highs lows or mediums (have to run some tests later). i love the design and circumaural (around the ear, not on top) setup. the only cons i've noticed is that due to the large earpads i get "headphone hair" after extended periods of use and the cord is long enough but seems thin/weak at the connections. i would definitely reccomend this or if not this then possible some sennheiser studio headphones.

what? man i can still hear you........2007-08-24
i can still hear things over the headphones but when music is playing there is some noice cancelation added it seems. i dont have to turn the volume up that far on my stereo to have the music at the level i want it at. the sound only crackles if you turn the bass up to high. but i can turn my equalizer off and the music sounds perfect with the headphoens on. only problem i had was the shipping it was sent by DHL they knocked on the door and left before we could answer it then they delivered the headphones to the post office and had them deliver it for them. if the post office hadnt delivered them right away they would have been 2-4 days past the delivery date because around here the post office doing parcel delivery can take longer than the normal 3-5 business days.

These are as good as Bose on residual hiss and has nearly as good audio (treble is better than Bose, bass a bit muddier) based on comparison, and only a bit more than 1/3 the cost when on sale. 20+ hrs on a single battery. Kills the roar with minimal hiss. Compact but secure rigid carrying case w/ room for MP3 player & its charger. Super product!
Great sound but noisy to neighbors.......2007-12-25
Just a quick note and observation on the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7. I found the sound reproduction and noise cancelling excellent. BUT, as other reviewers noted, the headphones are very loud to the person next to you. I was surprised and disappointed as I spent much time researching all headphones and decided on these. However, as a frequent traveller, I've always found it rude when I could listen to what one of the nearby airline passengers was listening to. Therefore, I returned these and spent the extra money for the Bose QC3. I am very happy with the Bose and have made some transatlantic flights with peace. I will say that the sound reproduction of the ATH is superior to the Bose, but the rest belongs to Bose. Bose is far superior in comfort. Spend the extra money and treat yourself to the better product (in my humble opinion).
Decent NC Headphones.......2007-12-25
For the money, you really cannot go wrong with these headphones. I purchased them for a trip from North Carolina to Hawaii and back. I was not disappointed with them, given the price. I was fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it) to sit next to someone who had the Bose QC3 headphones. Indeed, the QC3 did mute the ambient noise better than the ATH-ANC7 headphones, but I'm not sure it would have been worth the extra $200 or so for the added silence. The ATH-ANC7 did a good job canceling the noise, and they also did well reproducing music on the plane. Unfortunately, due to their decent ambient noise cancellation, I was able to hear a lot of noise in the music that was being played on the plane; maybe that is why the Bose isn't as good in the mids and highs that the Audio-Technica headphones are. (Do not read this as a defect of the ATH-ANC7 -- this is noise introduced by the plane in the electrical system.) The ATH-ANC7 headphones were comfortable to wear for most of the trip, but by the last couple of hours on the trip out (14.5 hours), my ears were getting sore from where the ANC7 sat. I did not use them much on the way back, as I was attempting to sleep, and they are not comfortable to wear when using a pillow (not to mention the feedback squeal when the noise port is blocked).
All in all, if you have the money to blow, the Bose QC3 may be a good option, but if you are like the rest of us, then the ATH-ANC7 may be a better deal.
Very good for noisy flight or office........2007-12-22
I bought this headphone during a trip in the Unites States and I enjoyed it at the flight back to Europe and after that each day at the office.
With this headphone and the right music you aren't any longer disturbed from any noise around you. The headphone is very very comfortable and reduces noise from outside remarkable. The sound is very good for the price and the overall impression after 4 weeks of usage in the office is brilliant. It was one of my best gifts I made to me.
Sound leakage stops it from getting a perfect "5".......2007-12-22
I got these as my Christmas present to myself as I wouldn't ask family to put out this kind of money for me a gift. I've had them for nearly a week now and I have the following impressions.
Like all the folks that mentioned this before they DO look and feel much better in person than what photos and descriptions indicate. They're well built and I've had them on for several hours at a time. Comfort was a concern as I have a WIDE head sometime anything other than earbuds are uncomfortable right from the start. These adjust to fit well and no discomfort has been noted.
The sound, also as noted by many, is much "cleaner" over the spectrum to me than the Bose QC2's that I tried with no noted "muddiness" on the bass. The sound is very nice and though I don't consider myself an audiophile, I do listen to much music of many genres. I am more than pleased with the sound reproduction and the noise cancellation feature. The music volume does have a perceptive volume increase when the noise cancellation feature is activated. The AAA battery compartment is sleekly hid in the left ear cup and accessed by rotating the cup perpendicular to the head band. The battery compartment is clearly embossed with the correct battery orientation.
To me these headphones have two huge positives. One can NOT connect any cabling and strictly use as a noise canceling device, and conversely, should the battery that powers the noise canceling circuitry die and you don't have a replacement battery at the ready and you're plugged into your sound source, you still have a working headset, sans the noise canceling feature. (the hard case that you store your headset in has a little pocket on the left side for connectors and cable which can easily accommodate a spare battery or two)
The ONLY drawback I have with this unit is the leakage that appears to emanate from the outside mics that are used to pick up the noises the headset needs to generate "negative sound" to block, creating the the noise canceling feature. How distracting it is to others around me, at this point I haven't had a real opportunity to test. Sadly, the first real test will be in another month or so when I join up with my mom when we have a 7+ hr. flight across the Atlantic. The good side, is mom is double hearing aided. So when it's time for "down time" and the engine noise is bothering me, she can turn off her hearing aids and be blissfully unaware of any sound leakage. If the other passengers around me turn and give me ugly stares or say something to me, then I'll just go into noise canceling mode only and turn off my tunes. Hopefully the leakage isn't so severe this will be an issue. Overall these are VERY nice "over the ear, noise canceling" headphones.
The price comparison, sound quality and wearing comfort with Bose makes them very attractive and a set you should certainly consider, provided one can live with the sound leakage.
Perhaps with ambient noise going on around you, your neighbors may possibly not notice the sound leakage, as we may be focusing on solely that one point and missing "the bigger picture" and it's not an issue to our neighbors. Perhaps that would be a good point for future reviewers to address. "Do your neighbors notice/object to your headphones sound leakage"? Ask them AFTER you've been listening to your sound source for a while. Then shut the unit down and see if they were distracted or "noticed" music coming from your headphones. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we've created this monster in our heads and it's not really an issue?

I just got these for christmas and i adore them. they block out everything so well. my dad tried them and he thought i was pretending not to talk. i love the bass on them too. they really just surround you in music and it really feels like the way music should be heard. i highly recommend them.

These sound great, but like others have said, not much bass. I still think they sound great. If you are using these for home theater beware that the cord is not that long. I plugged it into my receiver and was unable to sit down on the sofa because of the short cord. I will have to move my receiver one of these days, but overall for the price I still say you can't go wrong with these cans.
Amazing sound for movies, divx, & music.......2007-12-25
I am very, very impressed with these cans. They are fairley comfortable and the sound is very clear, crisp, and full. The "passive" noise cancellation does well in airplanes and when the music is on you cant hear much engine noise or other distractions. I recommend these for the music lover and at the price...you cant beat it

I bought the HD 280's more than 2 years ago and felt compelled to write a short review. Most of what I was going to write about has already been written, so I just want to add to those great reviews and offer few clarifications to those who hate it.
These headphones are great, they give great bang for buck and can beat the tri ports any day. Some of you may disagree but I am talking in terms of clarity. The bass is slightly lacking, but this is not the end of the world. I use the 280's with a decent sound card and the sound is wholesome again! I heard some people saying that the 280's are incapable of production any bass at all, this statement is completely false. Its not that they are not capable, its because your mp3 players are not capable of amplifying the sound. Even a small headphone amplifier will improve the sound by at least 50%.
I listen to all kinds of music and I must say that these when used with the right stuff are worth every penny for the upgrade. For testing the lows, I am listening to some Deep House, Put your hands up for Detroit by Fedde Le Grand and I can feel every quarter kick shock my cans. The bass riff is accurate to the very last frequency. And its performance on less bass heavy is nothing less than perfect, compared to others in the similar price range and even higher for some.
These are great for DJ's, its long cords and flipable cups are ideal for quick cues. They are better than most DJ headphones I ever used, except the HDJ-1000 Pro DJ...they are way more comfortable and sounds slightly better than the Sennheiser's. It is very important to have headphones, comfortable for elongated use. The 280's were killer at first, but after a while the 280's dont squeeze your ears as much.
The noise isolation is great and you would expect this from the 6N of pressure. It gives you a seal like no other headphone, thats why it also gives you pain like no other.
People were complaining about its build quality, I think its strong as it was 2 years back. I had no problems the headband cracking, nor with the synthetic leather chipping away. It is made of plastic but the plastic is not of cheap quality.
These are some huge and heavy headphones, so I would not recommend using them like earbuds. These are portable but they are too huge to carry around even when you folded them. They wont fit in any of your pockets, unless you have custom ones made just for these. The cable is so long that a good length will be visible and people will think you are a nerd.
Overall I have never once regretted my purchase of the HD 280's. I would definitely recommend it but only if you have additional sound components to go along with them.

I ALMOST bought noise-cancellation headphones and kept reading the reviews about the Sennheiser HD-280 for less than half the price of the electronic ones.
Then, I read about the electronic ones and how the Sennheiser's were just better, plus no batteries to deal with and they are foldable - but again, these are just headphones, not actual noise-cancellation ones.
Well I had a 14 hour plane trip and decided to buy these and they are great. I also shoot guns at an indoor range and have passive "noise suppression" over the ear - ear mufflers too. The Sennheiser HD-280 isn't the same, but comes remarkably close.
I've worn these for about 10 of those 14 hours and I was fine, but if you have a larger than average noggin I could see where these would cause discomfort. The fold and twist so it slipped into my laptop bag with ease. Sound quality is superb and the side effect is passive noise suppression too. I'll take these on every plane trip from now on, with or without music.
p.s. The fact the actual cord can be replaced was another plus - headphones are only as good as the actual cord - this is some smart thinking by Sennheiser!

When the last set lost the sound, it would give static and try to find a signal - usually my neighbor's wireless phone if anything. This one gives three beeps and shuts off. Much better.

Bought this product as a refurbished item at about $60. It works very good. When I received the product there weren't any instructions. I went to the manufactures website and got going in no time.
There can be certain head positions that you may get some interference, but 98% of the time it's no problem. I turn on my stereo and go in the other room with the headsets and listen to some great tunes.
It is not a noise cancelling headset, but works well when there are other distractions in the room and I'm trying to watch TV.

WIll save your marriage. All wireless products have slight interferences (iPhone near a speaker, anybody?) so the trick is to find a cost effective model that has the smallest amount of interference. Sennheiser has been creating audio gear long enough to know that this balance is necessary and they need to put their name on a product that meets above average standards. This set does just that. I really don't notice much interference at all. I like the positions of the controls and the function of them (they work! Yay!) The charging unit/transmitter is a smart setup. The charge lasts a long time, and how great is it that it's the holder for the headphones. Soon, there will be lighter weight, head specific models, but after all the reviews and research I did with this pair, I'm very satisfied. I use them quite a bit, so this is based on field testing. Based on the reviews for this, I expected the sound to be flawless. I was a bit disappointed with the interference I got when moving around. All in all they are better than others that I have tried, however for the money and based on the other reviews I expected more from these.
Pros: recharable batteries. Can change frequencies to try for better reception. Very comfortable. Not heavy.
Cons: They still have residual hiss, although faint as it may be, it is still there.
Also, it is important to note that I use these for practicing my guitar so the residual hiss does not really bother me, however if I had purchased these for TV or music ONLY, I would have returned them.
