Beautiful Design and Easy Setup
The WPN824 is a very attractive unit with a white exterior and rounded edges. An included plastic stand lets you stand the router on its edge to take up less space. Since the antennas are built in, there are no protrusions extending out of the case, maintaining a clean, elegant form factor. A vertical stand is included for more placement options.
The WPN824 makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your DSL modem, cable modem, or other network connection into the router. An installation wizard guides you through the setup process step-by-step.
The WPN824 employs a web-based interface for configuration, and the router will automatically do the initial setup by getting your DNS settings and determining your IP address. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your router will always be up-to-date.
Fast and Secure
The WPN824 supports the 802.11g standard but extends it with Smart MIMO technology that incorporates intelligent internal antennas, allowing it to detect interference from home devices such as microwaves, and adjusting itself accordingly. The upshot is speeds up to 108 Mbps with a longer range and a lack of "dead zones" in your home. When used with NETGEAR's adapters, it can provide up to 500,00 square feet of uninterrupted coverage. You will see the difference when you download music, stream video, or make internet telephone calls. If you still have computers that use 802.11b, don't fret as the router is backwards compatible with the older wireless standard and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network and the WGR614 will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.

In addition to wireless access, there are four 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet ports in the back for connecting computers to the network via a fast wired connection.
The WPN824 offers many security options to ensure your data is private. Double firewall protection keeps your network shielded from outside attacks and Network Address Translation (NAT) hides your PCs and files from outside snoopers. To ensure the security of your wireless data, both 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption is available, as well as WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). You can also use MAC address authentication to allow only authorized users onto the network and Wireless Access Control (SSID) to identify authorized wireless network devices.

I bought this router a few days ago as a replacement to my old DLink. Setup is easy, but then I started having problems. A directly connected desktop would "drop off" the network. From 5 feet away, I was getting a weak signal on my laptop. The wireless network would seemingly go down altogether periodically.
The device lacks any real diagnostics to figure out what is going on. You can't change the channel from the default (6). Needless to say, it is being returned.
Worked with minimum configuration, and What a Light Show!.......2007-12-19
My previous wireless router died suddenly, so I searched reviews looking for one which would offer better range for my 802.11G laptop, Wii and PSP. This one quickly bubbled to the top.
Configuration took a few minutes. The router works perfectly. The light show is WOW! If you look at the picture of this product, the blue LEDs under the dome on top are very bright, and flash in some pattern that has to do with the 7 internal antennas being accessed. We enjoyed the lights for a couple of nights, then clicked the button to turn them off. The version for sale today has a button in the back to stop the show.
The router itself does the job. Wireless networks were pretty exciting 5 years ago, but now you just expect them to be simple and work. This one fits that description nicely. It would have gotten a fifth star if range had increased dramatically from my previous router, but the coverage is very similar with my G devices. Other users report better range when you purchase Rangemax cards, but all my wireless devices have built-in WiFi.

This product is just trash. Do not waste your time or money on it like I did, unfortunately. I liked it at first because it was easy to set up, looked pretty good to me, and worked seamlessly. Until after about 6 months of ownership it starts not connecting to the internet very good because of Netgears dns traffic passing stuff. It has only gotten worse until it would just connect for maybe a few seconds. I had to get rid of and will never buy a netgear product again. Just look on other reviews to learn more about it dying when it even nears a year and the horrible customer support.
YES, you CAN turn off those annoying blue disco lights!.......2007-11-25
I recently bought this router to replace a lost Linksys wireless router and so far it's working fine with some improved range. I, like about everyone else was TOTALLY annoyed with the blinking blue disco lights.
FYI, after a brief search on the internet, I discovered this:
"Note: The button on the back of the router is NOT a power switch. It is used only to turn the blue LED lights on the router on and off."
I just assumed the switch in the back of the router was a power switch, but it's not.
Thankfully, I can now enjoy the device without have to wear sunglasses at night.

Recently I had to give this router up for the Verizon Fios router. The Verizon router did not have the same range or stability. I turned off the wireless on the Verizon router and went out and got another one of these (gave the old one away). Now the laptops are doing great on the other side of the house.

When this router arrived, it didnt come with the standard packaging. I realized this was a refurb, which made sense as to the low price. It was NOT clearly marked as a refurb and I am currently researching to see if it was advertised as brand new merchandise.
To make matters worse, port forwarding doesnt work with a standard install unless you take down the SPI feature of the router, making it less secure. The fancy lighting is useless and has no functionality other than to fire off blue light. Fortunately this can be turned off.
If laptop is put in sleep mode, it has a VERY difficult time reconnecting, sometimes having to reboot in order to get a clean connection. Signal strength also seems to be less than advertised but this may be the reason it was a refurb. I think there are better routers for the money. I wont go with netgear again.

5) MOST IMP :- If you are buying this REFURBISHED then then Be EXTRA CAREFUL because Netgear will not support Installation process over phone also no manual will be provided. If think you are smart enough to install without CD or Manual or Phone then only BUY it.
