Notworking Architect (PI).......2007-12-11
My NFS write performance from my iMac to Linux Server was horrible, and after trying a whole bunch of optimizations. I decided to see if network errors were the culprit. Quickly got two Netgear GS724T Smart 1Gb Network switches from a friend to check if "The Network" was the issue due to dropped packets.
Got the boxes opened, plugged all the cables in, and powered up the units. First thing I noticed was the fans. The fans came on immediately, and are not thermally controlled. The noise level seems to be okay, but could be an issue in a quiet room. Maybe the next revision will have thermally controlled fans. The airflow for the fans are the side panels, would have liked it to be front to back.
Moving forward, fired up Firefox to configure the switches. Problems, I could not find the switches on the network. Spent the next twenty minutes checking the DHCP server (NetScreen 5xt router) for assigned IP address. I had to reboot the switches, and start over many times. No luck, no IP address assigned to the switches.
At this point, my daughter walks saying, "What are you doing, Daddy?" I reply, "I am configuring a switch". There went the next half an hour trying to explain to my 8-year-old daughter what a smart network switch is. By this time my daughter is thoroughly convinced that I am clueless about what I am doing, and know absolutely nothing about switches. She starts rummaging around the Netgear shipping box, and pulls out the small booklet. "What is this? She asks. "That is the manual for the switch" I replied. "Have you read it?" she asks. At this point 'Real men don't eat Quiche, and Real men don't read manuals' flashed through my head, and I slowly replied ".... Nnooo". She quickly replies, "May be you should" before running out of the room.
Okay time for the manual. The manual is fairly straightforward, skimpy at places. Wickedly I thought 'Maybe I should get my daughter to write the manual. I am sure she would start by 'First....... No.. No waait, First.... you.... open.... the.... ".
Stop it; Stop it, back to work.
I quickly opened the manual to DHCP and setup page. The manual states " switch should be in DHCP client mode". No way Jose! and gave up, did not want to argue with the switch. I changed my iMac to the switches subnet (listed on the manual). Voila, switches visible. Now we are cooking with gas.
The web configuration is a breeze, and quite straight forward. I set up static IPs on both switches and changed password etc. For the network functionality I enabled two trunked ports at 1Gb between two switches, disabled VLANs, didn't need them for my application, and enabled auto negotiation on the other ports.
The switches worked like a charm. Started the NFS tests, and logged onto the switches to see packet statistics. No Problems here, no packet drops at all. However NFS is still slow. Maybe I will review that ##$%$$#@# Linux server next.
I have been using the switches for a few months now, no problems so far. All in all this is a solid product, with excellent performance at a great price. I would highly recommend this switch. My pros, cons and wish list are as follows;
Overall rating: 4.5/5 (dinged 0.5 for the DHCP fiasco and Cons)
Tech Level: High (my daughter would disagree)
Pros:
Great Price.
Full non-blocking wire-speed connectivity. Web interface for programming
Packet statistics are a great help in debugging network issues.
VLANs, Trunking/bonding features.
Jumbo frame support
Cons:
No PoE, not a big deal IMHO
LED lights are not on the jacks; you have to look to side to check link status.
Fan noise
Side airflow
Documentation should be consistent with switch behavior
Wish list:
Thermally controlled fans
mDNSResponder for configuring multiple switches.
Front to back airflow
Excellent SMB Switch with Enterprise functionality.......2007-09-24
Who could ask for anything more? If you are looking for a bare-bones L2 switch with advanced L2 functionality, but without the high-price and need for advanced training then this is the switch you need to get. We like Netgear products a lot and have watched them progress as a company. They got this switch right. WebUI is easy to navigate and program, Help system is content-rich, and performance is well-balanced with the price. Most users won't need all the funtionality, but if are one of the few who are small but need BIG services, this switch hits the sweet spot.
best smart switch for the money.......2007-05-06
great switch if you want control over it also 24 ports 1000mbps and full duplex 2 fiber optic ports and great price what else do you want?

2nd one - problems with the first..........2007-08-06
For the price, I guess this switch is ok. The first one I bought starting have trouble with the port on it. Ports would just go dead and I'd have to switch the cable at that port to another open port.
I called support serveral times and spoke with different technicians, but no one could get the switch to work correctly on those dead ports. They were supposed to email me RMA instructions, which I never got. I called multiple times to get the RMA instructions, but each time I called they wanted diag my switch again!
Needless to say, I ended up buying a second one, which has been working. I still have never gotten LinkSys to give me an RMA on the first. So it's sitting in its box - big waste of money.
The reason I gave this product a 4 star is because it works when it works. My only real gripe was the support. In the future I'll probably be looking somewhere else for a switch.

Enterprise is like a Cisco so ... is Linksys.......2007-05-13
Good web administration faster and easy to setup
Doesn't work with Firefox -- or ANY mac browser!.......2006-11-22
I second the comments about the loud fan.
However, the deal breaker for me (I'm returning the unit I bought) is that the web management interface does not work with Firefox. In fact, it works ONLY with IE on a PC.
Given that many other Linksys products work with Firefox, I was pretty surprised.
Linksys needs to have a talk with the clue fairy and cut some new firmware.
NOISY - VERY Noisy.......2005-04-02
I placed this switch in an isolated central wiring closet that has other network equipment, some with fans and disk drives. There has never been any sound audible outside the wiring closet.
This switch sounds like a vacuum cleaner, and is clearly audible and objectionable in every room that abuts the closet.
The switch seems to function OK but the noise is so loud that I regret the purchase.
Unless you can mount this switch were noise is already very loud, or where noise will not bother anyone, I'd recommend you look elsewhere.
Great switch but big and noisy!.......2005-02-23
Check out those dimensions! BIG!. It has a fan too and they haven't taken any lessons from Steve Jobs about making the fan quiet so it better be in an enclosed, insulated space if you are putting this in your home or small office.
Other than that it is great and a real performer (switches at wire speed)
p.s.
I wish I could change my vote to 2 stars.
Although they answered the support line quickly, I was told that the noise of this product is as designed and it really isn't intended for a small office, but rather should live in an already noisy data center where it can just add to the din. I am going to return mine and find another brand that actually wants it's equipment to be used in a small office. Sigh...

Bad Product and an even worse Customer Service.......2007-02-26
Bought two of then in a span of 6 months. Both went bad. Spent 3 hours with customer services - approx. 2 hours on hold, and one hour talking to various reps. whose English pronunciations were sad (to say the least). Hopefully, after I send these back they will refund my money. If they replace these two units I suppose the story starts again !!
I wish we have negative points - they would have aced it!
Bad customer service!! Waste my time for nothing!.......2007-02-08
My office purchased this EF4124 switch in June 2006. It was working fine without problem. But recently, our IT people unpluged it for re-routing wires, after they put the wire back, it was not working.
Then we called LinkSys customer service for RMA, but they needed us to talk to the technical support first in order to activate the case ID. Ok, we would do it, but we had waited 30 mins, and no one picked up the phone. Before calling the technical support, we had talked to many different customer service representatives. Just felt like they were taking us around different departments.
We may try to call back later for activating the case ID when we feel happier. Also, we need to fill out the online form with that case ID again.
This switch is good, but you will feel disappointed from the Linksys customer service when it is broken.
Great Switch!.......2006-10-30
Easy to install. I replaced a 24 port 3Com product which had a chattering port. This item installed easy and works great. The only thing I would change is the power cord. You need right angle cord to mount the swith in some mount brackets
Unreliable switch with very poor technical support.......2006-10-27
I purchased two of the EF4124 24-port switches for my small business. Within a week, one switch went bad. If nothing was plugged in port # 1, everyone lost their connection. When I disconnected all the cables and turned it back on, 4 ports still showed to be active. The same thing happend to the second switch about two weeks later. After waiting on hold for an hour, they said someone would call the following day because they were to busy to help me. Not holding my breath
I have used Linksys for many years with very few problems. I will not purchase their products again.
Best bang for the buck out there, a great buy!.......2002-11-16
In my opinion, Linksys has done it again. I purchaced the EF4124 for my company, after suffering a massive outage due to the master switch freezing up. After recieving the Linksys, I was amazed by how much you get for the money. Everything on this switch is auto-detected. If used with the right NIC, you can get this baby up to 200 MB/sec in full duplex mode. I also love how it will detect cable type, so you can use a crossover cable with it, as well as any variety of networked devices. It will detect them all. The form factor is also nice. It is small enough so it won't be in the way, but it is large enough for people with big fingers, myself included. If you are in the market for a new switch for your office, or to network your home, this switch is the cream of the crop.

Netgear FS728TP Review.......2007-10-15
With traffic on networks increasing and new devices being regularly added, you need a network switch that will not only cope with your current demmand, but will also be futureproof. The FS728TP does all that. With power over ethernet it can provide power to voice over IP phones on your network, remote webcams, etc therefore removing the need for local power sources for them.
This really is a switch that suits all users - from the basic user this is effectively plug and play - just connect your devices and it works out of the box. With other more advanced features such as QoS, SNMP, Web based configuration & DHCP it offers plenty of configurability for the more advanced user as well.
All in all, this is a great value for money switch with the performance and reliability that Netgear are known for. A highly recommended product!

Solid performer for more than a year now.......2006-09-03
I have owned a Linksys Etherfast 3124 for more than 1 year and have had to reset it once. I use this switch in a test lab environment in my home and it gets as much traffic pumped through it as my Ciscos do at work. It has never failed to perform to my standards.
As for the power issues, my switch is not connected to a UPS but always resets properly after a power hit.
Solid Switch for the $$$.......2006-04-20
This workhorse will perform well in the growing small office. The expandability is at the right price point. BTW - this unit performs well as advertised by linksys.
Power problems? then make sure thay you use a good managed UPS for all your network infrastructure. I always design these in so that critical path network links are always up and running.
Terrible.. Terrible... Terrible...........2003-08-27
This switch is garbage... (as is all linksys switches). We own this and many 5 and 8 port switches. Every single on when the power goes out must be manually powered off and powered back on. Linksys's terrible technical support says it is normal.... How is that normal? DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE... YOU WILL BE SORRY!
