Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

Product Description

LINKSYS WRT54G - Wireless-G is the emerging 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B ( 802.11b ) products found in homes, businesses and publicwireless hotspots around the country. The best part is, since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices talk to existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment. Operates as a DHCP Server NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders Supports VPN pass-through Easy configuration with web browser based configuration utility

Amazon.com Product Description

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.

This router works fine but their customer service SUCKS!
Their techs really don't know what they're doing and it took me over an hour to talk to someone. Then couldn't understand what the heck she was saying. No speaky English!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe how easy it was to set up!!!!!.......2008-01-01

I got my Linksys at a far inferior website than Amazon-regrets but I'm back. Anyway, first I didn't know you needed to have a speed boost adapter to make the speed boost adapter on this router work. Just to save you time and "restocking" fees some rip off companies may charge you. Get the Speed boost adapter.
The set up was soooo easy, I couldn't believe it!
I am not exaggerating! I popped in the cd for the router, I got the instructions. Got the password, security settings down and it did the rest. I just plugged in the adapter to my other computer and Presto!!!! The internet was on in seconds. I was truly amazed. Kept thinking, I had to of done something wrong... that was too easy! But I didn't. It works.
I have cable internet and the speeds on this computer that has the adapter in it works very well and downloads very fast most of the time. It has it's slow times, on very little occassions, but that has more to do with internet traffic than the adapter/booster. You have to be realistic.
Anyway, love it, glad I got it. Been using it for more than 3 weeks and I am extremely happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than D-Link.......2007-12-28

I have had the WRTG54GS for maybe 2 years without any trouble with the router until I added a slingbox and 7 wired and wireless network cameras accessible over the internet. Even then my only trouble is sporadic and only requires me to un-plug and re-plug in the router. I am not sure why this happens but I feel it may have something to do with the different camera types and slingbox or from some other programs I have running or their settings. This is a very easy router to setup and use as well as changing any settings.
With 400 reviews you really dont need mine, but I also have a wireless D-Link router and I have had un-pleasant experiences with their tech support and just wanted to advise you to try and contact tech support and ask some questions before you buy anything. I have had some experience with U.S. Robotics wireless products in the past and they had great tech support at the time. Sorry I dont have time to go into details.

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2007-12-27

This item is terrible. Lost connection multiple times a day, does not block a single website, and just a lot of tweaking to make it work at all. I bought a Netgear router to try something new, and after 1 day, I took the linksys to the dumpster where it belongs. netgear is far better than this thing, which isnt even a great paper weight. Only reason it has 1 star is amazon forced me to rate something.

5 out of 5 stars GO WIRELESS.......2007-12-27

I purchased this product to enhance my wirless network. I had no problems with the setup. The range was great. I live in a 27,000 sq ft home with upstairs. I had no problems with connecting to the network. The only thing is once you setup using the disk you may want to log into the router to tweak somethings. I also had a problem connecting up my daughter P2P to it but I worked it out.

4 out of 5 stars If at first you don't succeed...........2007-12-27

I bought my first Lynksys router and it worked for about 2 hours, and then kaputted. After figuring out that it wasnt just a cable or bad internet, the power light wouldn't come on at all. Defective. I returned it, and haven't had any problems with my new 2nd router.

D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router

Product Description

Create a wireless network to share high-speed Internet access with computers, game consoles, or media players from greater distances in your home or office. Using D-Link Xteme-N wireless products makes it really easy!
The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router is a draft 802.11n compliant device that delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices. Connect the Xtreme N Gigabit Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, videos, printers, and network storage.
With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With D-Link's Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic is analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. This enables multiple applications to stream smoothly to your TV or PC. Delivering best-in-class performance, network security, and coverage, this router is the ideal centerpiece for your wireless network in the home or office. Backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices including game consoles and digital media players

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good router worth the price.......2007-12-31

This is a good router and worth the price if you are looking to purchase one. The product is constructed very nicely with many hardware features.
The hardware itself includes three detachable 2dbi antennas (less signal loss), vivid connection indicators, and several lan ports. The included hardware features consists with support for wireless standards, security (wep and mac address filtering), and a moderately complex configuration interface.

Again, this is worth the purchase... :)

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-12-30

A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
After giving up on all Linksys products for dead out the box and intermittent signal, in addition to their setup CD's being useless, what a relief to find a product that works fantastic and is a breeze to setup.
I am using XP SP2 and download and installed the lastest firmware from Dlink. Dlink's website is great. They have detailed instructions with text and pictures. I set the router up manually because of my experience with Linksys and was up and running in 15 minutes.
This router is fast and I have yet to drop signal from anyware in my 2 story house. I purchased the Xtreme N Wireless PCI Express card DWA-652 for the laptop and am running in wireless -n- only.
It's like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Doing work from home has never been free of frustration because of signal drops until this router.
Tell your friends and family to purchse this router and card combination and end drop signals for all wireless users.

5 out of 5 stars Total solution for any home or small business.......2007-12-29

This Router does it all. All 4 wireless bands, 3 powerful antennas covers the house. All 3 detach so that the 10db Antennas can be used for a wider coverage area or areas. No matter the cost, this one does it all!

5 out of 5 stars Installation can be tough, but it works perfectly.......2007-12-28

Don't be frustrated if the router and its security settings are difficult or confusing to configure. If you stick with with it, this Wireless N router works phenomenally. I get amazing speed and signal in every corner of my house. Two troubleshooting tips: 1) Make sure you have a network cable handy so that you can directly connect to the router during setup or if a problem arises in the future (though I've had none since setup). 2) If you're not using a D-Link wireless card in your computer, trying reinstalling the network drivers in your computer if you run into connection problems. Bottom line: best router I've ever owned!

5 out of 5 stars Simple & Effective.......2007-12-28

Our construction includes several cement block walls. This d-link router is simple to install - including security setup - and has a much wider reach than 802.11g had, even when using a booster with the older technology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great speed and range.......2008-01-01

I replaced a D-link "b" network with this Draft-N version from Apple. I can only compare to my previous wireless network but this Apple appears to have similar speed to the wired connection via cable modem and definitely more range without dead zones. It functions exactly how I had hoped. Set up was reasonable for a wireless network. I had all information from my ISP available that the set up requested. Currently I am utilizing an IMac and PC desktop with a wired connection and a MacBook and PC laptop with a wireless connection and all 4 work online flawlessly. There are directions for MAC and PC. The provided software does seem to require newer versions of Apple or Windows to fully utilize this base. I have an older version of Windows which seems to be limiting the ability of network sharing between computers. I also have not utilized the USB port but I'm hoping that will not be dependent on the version of the software. The only drawback is the price.

5 out of 5 stars apple.......2007-12-31

I bought a iMAC on the spur of the moment and needed to buy wireless, to use with my work laptop (windows), this product is great and it was easy to set up with my Cable modem.

5 out of 5 stars Works with Tivo over WPA2.......2007-12-28

I read a lot of reviews before buying. Arstechnica.com being the most influential. I do not have any MAC computers or ipods, etc. The deciding factor was the 2.4/5K Mhz capability as I am in a wifi high population area. There was one tricky bit to get this to talk to my Tivo wireless adapter. I had to set the WPA password to something exactly 13 characters long. It was a problem at first.. but setting the password to something 13 chars long fixed it. Also.. it is pretty and doesn't look like an old indoor TV antenna.

1 out of 5 stars Read the Apple discussion group before buying this router.......2007-12-26

There is a very widespread problem with this product. It disconnects from the internet at random times, often several times an hour. There are extensive threads about this problem in the Apple discussion group devoted to this router. It's a serious issue that affects many users, including me. I'd avoid buying this router until Apple solves this problem. Do your homework before shelling out your money. Unfortunately, I didn't, so am back to using my old router while waiting for a fix from Apple.

5 out of 5 stars Long Range Easy set-up!.......2007-12-25

Super easy set up, the range is amazing, PCs find the airport with no problems at all. I had the old extreme and the range was good, but the new extreme is really amazing :)

4 out of 5 stars Router Review.......2007-12-31

Works as described. Purchased a few weeks ago and have been using since received without any problems. Initial problems with instillation of software. However, contacted Belkin support who assisted me with resolution of problem. Overall happy with product.

5 out of 5 stars What's everyone's problem? This is a great product........2007-12-30

I love this router! It took a few moments to hook-up, but not long. We have Port Magic on our PC, and it covers the security that we needed. It's small and I get about a 60% reception in my room from abour 50 ft. and 6 or 8 walls inbetween.
It's networked to my PC and I can't wait to get an extender so I'll have a %100 rating there. It'll definitely be a Belkin too!

I have this installed and often I have to reboot the thing to get it to work. A tech frind of mine says I should have went with a LINKSYS. I just may do that.

This wifi gateway router technically 'works' but did not at all meet our ordinary domestic needs. We ultimately had to return it.

Linksys WRT150N Wireless N Home Router with 4-Port Switch Mimo

Product Description

The Linksys WRT150N Wireless-N Home Router lets you share a high-speed Internet connection and reach large areas of the home or office. The Home Router uses MIMO radio technology with multiple radios to create a robust signal that travels up to 3 times farther than Wireless-G. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to reduce dead spots in the wireless coverage area. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. Delivering faster speeds at up to 9 times faster and 3 times the range of Wireless-G. Wireless-N is the next generation of wireless with advanced radio technology that increases speed with coverage & virtually eliminates dead spots.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Setup!.......2007-12-29

After spending 20 hours trying to secure our 1 year old D-link router, we decided to scrap it and try it again. Since we're too cheap to pay the Geek Squad to set up our 4 computer wireless home network we decided to try it on our own. We were ready for the setup to take hours. Instead it took about 30 minutes to set up all 4 computers. The setup disk is excellent. The network is running flawlessly. We could not be more pleased.

4 out of 5 stars Great Linksys product, as expected.......2007-12-27

Relatively easy to install, and works great. Another good product from the linksys guys..

5 out of 5 stars Nice for the Price.......2007-12-26

I have actually set up two of these routers in the last few weeks, one for a wireless network and another for my own network (for which I run wired). I had been looking at some of the more expensive Linksys routers, but honestly for most users, the WRT150N pretty much covers all the bases, and I really didn't see the need of complicating matters by going with a router that had heavier security features (not that this router doesn't have good security) as it tends to overtake the plumbing too much sometimes if one doesn't set up security features correctly.

Setup is fairly easy - I have found that this particular router is more useful WITH the EasyLink Advisor software than without. I personally didn't need it but I installed it anyway. For one thing it gives you an at a glance (and useful) report of your network status and devices connected to it, and makes it much easier to assign network keys, wireless channels, spacing and so forth when first setting it up. It's also unobtrusive and only speaks when spoken to, which means it sits in the tray and behaves itself. Makes it much easier to see how everything is configured without having to go thru pages and pages of the browser interface (which unless you really need to do a lot of tweaking doesn't need to be accessed).

Wireless performance is pretty darn good considering the WRT150N gives a pretty vanilla first impression - don't be fooled by some reseller's advertisements of this unit. Often they leave out little facts about this unit, especially in regard to its actual wireless security features - but the truth of the matter is the WRT150N pretty much features every type of security protocol out there including WEP 64/128, WPA, WPA2, enterprise and radius (both TKIP and AES included). Its signal output is very decent - the house I set it up in is two levels 2800 sqft, and I put it in on the bottom floor. Very good to excellent signal throughout the house, and it worked the first time, even with Vista.

Wired it runs just fine too and thankfully one can turn off the wireless features if they're just running wired devices. I can also report that it cascades very easily with another linksys router, as my WRT150N replaced a BEFSR41 (which only has NAT filtering and no SPI firewall) as the gateway. This router actually improved my internet performance on the downlink by about 10-15% as I was getting 8mbit down before and now averaging about 9.3mbit.

A quick rundown of the good and the bad:

What's cool:

Easy setup made even easier with the setup disk - it actually does what it's supposed to do.
SPI firewall and NAT filtering.
Virtually all wireless protocols supported.
Useful indicator lights - including a wireless on indicator and security enabled indicator.
Small footprint.
Wireless B/G/N supported and does take all in mixed mode.
20 and 40Hz spacing or auto select; primary and secondary channels separately configurable.
Easily cascaded with another router.
Good signal coverage.

What's Lame:

Indicator lights - I prefer a more detailed display like on my old BEFSR41 which actually shows whether a connection is at 10-BaseT or 100-BaseTX.
No gigabit capabilities. But having said that, the day copper can achieve 1 gigabit speed is the day the laws of physics change.
No USB/Uplink port.
No way to adjust transmitter's power output.

The bottom line:

Overall this is a very reasonably priced router with the latest security protocols and wireless-N capabilities that's also ridiculously easy to install. The fact I've installed two of them with no quibbles indicates to me that this is a also a reliable router. It may not look that sophisticated at first glance but this device has a lot of features under its hood, and pretty much has everything most users will ever need in current router/gateway technology (unless you also need a modem built in with it). Definitely recommended if you want a good router without spending an arm and a leg on one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent MIMO output.......2007-12-24

I believed this is the best wireless MIMO router switch that is in the market right now, I have tested it with 10 notebooks at the same time and each and one of it has the speed that was shown on the taskbar. excellent indeedLinksys WRT150N Wireless N Home Router with 4-Port Switch Mimo

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-12-19

I bought this router thinking that it would give the extended range over the Linksys WRT54G I had been using. I had thoughts of using the old router as a access point. I installed the software, plugged in the router, and everything was fine, initially. I noticed a couple of disconnects from the Internet, but thought nothing of it. Until the second day. I lost Internet connectivity three times. Each time, I was able to get it back by unplugging the cable modem and the router, then plugging them back in in sequence. Oddly, a couple of times my laptop still had connectivity wirelessly, but my wired desktop, the main computer, didn't.

Finally, the last time, I lost connectivity and was not able to get it back. I plugged back in the WRT54G, and everything has been fine. In fact, I am now using my Apple Airport Express as a range extender access point. I am sending back the N router.

I gave up on tech support. They were sure it was a problem with the cable modem. How strangely coincidental that my cable modem, which hasn't failed me in four years, suddenly started acting strangely with the installation of a new Linksys router.

Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N USB Network Adapter

Product Description

The Wireless-N USB Network Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce Dead Spots in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 4 times farther than standard Wireless-G.
With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the throughput can be increased even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds up to 12 times as fast as standard Wireless G. Your wireless connection is protected by industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. The included Setup Wizard will walk you through configuring the adapter to your network's settings, step by step.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N USB Network Adapter lets you access the fastest and most advanced wireless solutions currently available. With this unit enabling your PC or laptop, you can run media-intensive applications at amazing speeds, without the hassle or expense of stringing a lot of wires.

The Linksys Wireless-N USB Network Adapter uses the very latest in wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple-In, Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Whereas ordinary wireless technologies are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually makes use of these reflections to increase the range while reducing dead spots in the coverage area. This means the signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections at up to three times the distance of standard Wireless-G, so the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. This Wireless-N adapter is fully backward compatible, so it works great with standard Wireless-G and -B routers, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N enabled, you can experience increased throughput by using twice as much radio band, which allows speeds up to 15 times that of standard Wireless-G.

To help protect your data and privacy, this wireless adapter can encode all its wireless transmissions with iron-clad, 256-bit Wireless Protected Access (WPA2) encryption. Yet, despite a robust and deep set of features and functionality, configuration is simple and easy with an included web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N networking is ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and voice-over-IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams at the same time, without worrying about a degradation in performance.

The Linksys WUSB300N Wireless-N network adapter is easy to use, and can be plugged in to any open USB port. To experience the full advantages of Wireless-N technology, it is highly recommended that you use USB 2.0. This unit is FCC, CE, and IC-03 certified, receives power through its USB connection so it doesn't require an external power supply, and is backed by a manufacturer's limited three-year warranty.

1 out of 5 stars I hate the little antennaed p.o.s........2008-01-01

This little piece of junk has caused me more headaches than any other piece of networking equipment I've ever owned. It drops its signal at least twice every hour and often completely loses functionality until I restart my computer. Worthless.

3 out of 5 stars Love / Hate Relationship With This Thing.......2008-01-01

I have two machines, each one with its own WUSB300N Wireless N USB Network Adapter.

On my Windows XP desktop, it's wonderful. The speed and stability are great. I am very gratified by this purchase. However, ...

Like other reviewers, I had a heck of a time getting things stabilized on my AMD-64 bit desktop running a 32-bit version of Vista. I had no luck trying to manually download "special" drivers from Linksys specifically for 64-bit machines, etc. They made Vista completely crash.

THE REAL ODD THING ABOUT THIS ADAPTER IS THAT IT DOES NOT WORK WITH WORLD OF WARCRAFT. THIS IS NOT JUST A ROUTER ISSUE. *THIS* ADAPTER IS THE PROBLEM. THIS WIRELESS ADAPTER SHUTS DOWN WHEN YOU PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT!!!

It doesn't just make the game disconnect for me. For me I have to REBOOT my machine to get it working again as a network adapter.

You can search the internet with "WUSB300N WoW" and find many posts about this peculiar phenomenah.

There is some VERY BAD mojo between World of Warcraft and this PARTICULAR adapter.

SO, if you are a big WoW player (9 million folks out there are), AVOID THIS adapter as your wireless solution.

I'm able to play WoW well wirelessly on a builtin 802.11G adapter in my laptop. I just can't play it now on my desktops if I want Wireless-N speeds for everything else.

Connecting the WUSB300N to a G router does not help. This adapter just refuses to work for me any longer once I start World of Warcraft.

WoW players beware.

2 out of 5 stars Super Fast (for the 1/2 hour it works before stalling).......2007-12-31

I bought this over a week ago and it has been nothing but trouble. The connection frequently gets dropped requiring the user to reset the card and/or reset the router. I also have the Linksys-N router so it's not an issue of incompatable products. The included "monitoring" software is of no help because it reports the connection is active and strong when there is no connection!

I thought Cisco was a good brand, but this new draft N technology is obviously too new and has not been tested enough.

I'm hoping Linksys comes out with driver and firmware updates to improve the connection.

Last, while writing this review the connection dropped, requiring a "repair" It's like returning to the days of dial up modems hoping the connection will work.

1 out of 5 stars Linksys has lost my business forever after this adapter.......2007-12-13

I bought the WUSB300N for my Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit system, only to find that it didn't work after spending hours of trying different drivers and searching for a solution. I finally called Linksys support who told me that they have not released the drivers for this adapter for Windows Vista 64 bit machines. When I asked him when and if they would plan on releasing these drivers, he told me that they possibly would release them in late 2008. He was not helpful either. The thing that really stinks is that Linksys advertises that this adapter works with Windows Vista. But it apparently doesn't. I think I'm gonna try D-Link or Netgear in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Likes Vista Premium 32.......2007-12-09

Good stuff. I bought this after fighting with two D-Link PCI adapters. This product did what it claimed and ran under Vista. No calls to customer support were needed.

I am wondering now whether I should have sent back the D-Link router also and gone all Linksys.

Product Description

The Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router is really four devices in one. There's the dual-band Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. There is also a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. 1 out of 5 stars crashes.......2008-01-01

I have both Linkys WRT300N Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router and this WRT600N. Unlike 300N, this is a dual-band wireless router. Apparently, 5GHz does help in term of speed. 600N is about 50% faster than 300N, in 5GHz. The problem is, it crashes too often.

Every time, when I transfer a 700MB file, it crashes the router (about 500MB copied). I have to reconnect. WRT300N works much more reliable, although a bit slower.

4 out of 5 stars Linksys WRT600.......2007-12-28

The router works flawlessly after a very challenging set up adventure. The initial set up attempt was unsuccessful. I use the Vista Home Premium operating system. After 2 days of trying to configure the wireless set up using the Linksys provided configuration tool, I gave up. Wired set up was not a problem. After configuring the router for wireless operation with my laptop, the router recognized every wireless appliance on the network except for the laptop that I used to configure the router. I gave up after 2 days of unsuccessful attempts. Then I switched to the Windows Vista wireless configuration tool, and I was up and running in less than 5 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Performs as advertised, but ..........2007-12-22

I purchased this item for two reasons- improved range and security. It performs as advertised. The instructions are straightforward and written for both the average and advanced users - your choice as to how. Setup was easy, advanced settings went smoothly but... I lost wireless access for a MAC and MAC laptop to connect. Nowhere was this stated either in the instructions (after the fact, yes) or in the reviews. This can be circumvented if you choose to use ethernet cables but doesn't that defeat the purpose? All worked out well - my MAC user can conveniently "borrow" internet access from a friendly neighbor's unsecured router ( an older linksys).

1 out of 5 stars Where is the dual-band mode?.......2007-12-12

Very flaky router. I could not get it to work consistently (lots of dropped connections, redundant rescanning, etc..) without turning off one of the bands. Works wells now after many wasted days playing with the router configuration for the best operation. Works well in the N band only mode (turn off dual-band). This kind of defeats the purpose of purchasing this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Linksys SUPER Router WRT600N.......2007-12-03

I've had this router for about a month now. It replaced a low cost G Router that constantly lost connection with our DSL Modem. So far, the WRT600N has been rock-solid, never losing its connection to the modem. Even though we haven't invested in the N network cards for our laptops, we're getting great connections throughout our 3700 Sq Ft house. It's not cheap, but so far, it's worth every penny.
