3 bad routers before I gave up.......2007-12-16
Maybe I just happened to get 3 bad Belkin routers in a row, or maybe these things are just poor quality. The first one worked well for almost a year before it started to flake out. I liked the software, so I bought a new one because I liked the idea of upgrading to N technology anyway. The 2nd one immediately started flaking out and got worse. It would cut out for a few seconds every couple minutes. Belkin was good to replace my second router after a long series of support calls, but unfortunately the replacement had similar problems. For somebody casually surfing the web, the problem might not even be noticed, but is a disaster for anything remotely real-time such as VoIP, terminal services, or games. After this 3rd router I had had enough. I didn't even *want* a replacement from Belkin so I went out and baught a DLink and have been happy since (not a single router reset after months!).
to replace westell 327.......2007-11-27
I purchased this router to replace my westell,I wish I would have realized that you have to use a modem with this router,my westell has the modem built right in.This review is not solely written for using this router but possibly will be of some help to the next purchaser. In set up you do need a existing working modem, and to be internet ready.
Fast Set Up; Versatile Uses.......2007-11-25
If this router was any easier to set up, it would have unpacked itself and leapt out of its box! I practically had to pinch myself when it launched on a desktop PC before I thought it had been fully connected. That it works smoothly, securely (128 bit WEP) and effectively across Mac and PC desktops, Mac PowerBook, TiVo on wireless home network using DLink USB B adapters, Vonage VOIP router, and HP and Lexmark wireless printers speaks to its versatility. The user manual and browser-based set up provide helpful and interesting guidance to settings that allow getting the most out of the router if you are using VOIP (a chronic problem for me previously) and have lots of 802.11b traffic or interference in the area. This replaced a DI-624, and there is no comparison. I chose it over the competition based not only on Amazon users reviews but also on those on CNET and other tech-oriented web resources.
Another one bites the dust.......2007-11-07
I have the same issues above with this router. I have several Mac's, and a MacBook on this router. The Macbook won't stay connected which drives me nuts. My mom has a different Belkin router, and I have no problems at all.
I switched to an Airport Extreme, no problems.
nices.......2007-11-07
I have two PC's and one mac in my house, and the instant I set up this router the PC's connected to it flawlessly and everything was honky dory comfy cozy, but my macbook had a similar problem as some other people complained about, it would lose connection frequently. After looking online, I only saw a bunch of people complaining about it and never telling anyone how to fix it, well I installed the firmware update (you can find this at belkin.com) and i haven't lost connection since!
So, yeah... If i had only PC's i would have given this router 5 stars due to how easy it is to set up, how strong the signal is, how easy it is to set up a password and etc, but i'm giving it 4 stars simply because i had to install updated firmware to get it to work properly with my mac. In belkin's defense though, it was very easy to update the firmware.

Looks cool...But doesn't work!!!.......2008-01-01
I wish I saw all the negative reviews before I wasted money on this. I've tolerated it for 4-5 months...and just went back to my original Dlink G router that is working 1000 times better.
The Belkin would constantly drop the wireless connection. 4-5 times an hour. I thought maybe something was causing this (distance or interference). But finally the other day I thought to move the unit to the living room to get better reception and fix the problems. Crawled in the attic, ran ethernet cable, ran the cable modem too. Pain in the a**. Well, no better. 7 Feet away still dropped constantly!!!!
The biggest problem was dropping wireless every other minute. Plus many sites just seemed slow to load, and others would not load at all, but switching the router these same sites loaded right up. Many of the reviews on Amazon have the exact same symptoms.
Oh well. it's been 5 months so can't return and getting new unit thru Belkin sounds horrible and would likely be the same exact problems. So now I have my old G router next to the TV which can come in handy for new network devices (tivo, computers, etc...) and closer to where the laptop usually is. Buy another brand
Good and bad.......2007-12-29
The good news is the signal range. The bad news is longevity. These units die quickly. Good thing the manufacturer guarantees them for life.
Belkin N1.......2007-12-27
Just got mine. extremely user friendly and easy to set up. having issues with it though. Freezes up intermittently. maybe it's my ISP or maybe not.
The Best of the Best.......2007-12-23
It is beyond my comprehension why this product has so many 1,2, and 3 star ratings. I wonder if Linksys employees have a bit of free time on their hands or something...
I've purchased 3 Linksys wireless routers... I've had nothing but problems with them... dropped connections (wireless AND wired ones were dropped... huh?), security setup issues, and even bad power adapters that just suddenly died! My buddy, who is a network administrator, suggested that I try a higher end Belkin wireless router, meaning this model.
The setup was super easy. I just put in my wireless network name, picked a security passcode, and saved the settings (I already had the security passcode put into my laptop) Ever since, the router has just worked perfectly. I never lost a connection or had issues.
I had flashbacks of my Linksys models one time. None of my wireless connections were working (wired or wireless ones). The "Internet" light on the Belkin router was flashing yellow. I tried the "Linksys Routine" as I called it, which is unplugging my modem, computer, and router, and restarting them all one by one. I had to do this AT LEAST weekly to get Linksys to work... sometimes daily. My internet connection still didn't work. AFter doing the restart routine again, the internet still wouldn't work.
I called my ISP, and they informed me my whole state's internet was down. Their problem should be fixed by the morning. So, the next morning, I fired up my computer and everything worked fine. The Flashing light on the unit had gone back to solid blue. The problem was NOT with the Belkin; the problem was with my whole ISP. The lights are great for showing where any problems are.... unlike the lights on the Linksys, which are virtually useless.
I suggest you try this unit if you are tired of other brands and their cheap pieces of junk...
Fantastic Router.......2007-12-11
I ordered this router as it was a recommendation from the technical support staff at our ISP. I could not be happier. After 3 years fighting to get a Linksys router to work (and it only working sporadically), it is a pleasure to have this router. It practically installed itself and walked me through everything I needed to do to set it up and secure it. And since installation, it has been running like a top. No problems whatsoever. After Linksys, I feel elated to have chosen this product. Go get you one - you'll love it.

True Plug-and-Play Ease and Easy-to-Read Info
With the N1 Vision, you can kiss those long and arduous days of configuring your router goodbye. The N1 Vision offers a true plug-and-play "CD-less" installation and simple network security set-up. No confusing manuals to follow, no endless CD wizards. Simply plug the router in, follow the on-screen commands, and you'll be connected in no time.
Once your computers are online, its time for the N1 Vision to shine. Instead of the uninformative and confusing blinking lights that you've struggled to decipher all these years, the N1 has an easy-to-read LCD display that tracks your upstream and downstream speeds; logs your bandwidth; displays date, time, and network access info; and also shows you what devices are connected and how much bandwidth each one is using. Do you suspect that your child is spending his or her "homework time" downloading videos? Or that one of your roommates is eating up all your bandwidth? The N1 knows--and shows--all. The monochrome display offers a virtual "Download and Upload Speedometer" that gives you all the information you need.
802.11n: The Latest in Wi-Fi Performance
Featuring Wireless-N, the very latest standard in wireless networking technology, the N1 Vision will vastly increase both your network speed and your operating range. At the heart of this router is a high-performance, draft 2.0, 802.11n chipset with 3x3 MIMO, which achieves its superior capabilities by simultaneously overlaying the signals of multiple radios. This "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate, and unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to four times farther than the previous standard Wireless-G.
The bottom line: Under ideal conditions the N1 Vision can give you link rates of up to 300 Mbps (compared to previous rates of 54 Mbps), and an operating range of up to 1,600 feet. And you don't have to fret about your existing wireless devices; the N1 is compatible with IEEE 802.11g, 802.11b, and 802.3ab devices, which means you don't have to upgrade the rest of your hardware. (While the router will work great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, it will perform at its peak with other Wireless-N devices.)
The N1 Vision also features four gigabit Ethernet ports, as well as the latest in security standards, including Wi-Fi Protected Setup, WPA, WPA2, 64-/128-bit WEP encryption, and multiple SSID. Compatible with any PC running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, and Macs running OS X v10.4x, the N1 Vision is designed to set the new standard in wireless home networking.

Neat Features.......2008-01-01
N1 Vision Wireless Router With Status Display
I'm a guy swept away by cool features ... I only picked it up off the shelf to look at it becuase of the LCD display. Its a really convinient way of getting WAN/LAN statistics on the fly and without logging in.
I got online within 10 minutes using the manual setup. I'm personally not one for wizards, I personally think I'm smarter than the products I purchase.. :) I got right online with all of my machines except my roomate has an archaic notebook with an 802.11a card who couldnt even see the router. Thankfully I got him a Airlink101 N PCMCIA card ... problem solved.
It has a Guest SSID which I think is probibly the best idea yet. It allows you to parallel configure an SSID / WPA passkey that allows internet access but no local file access. WOW!
This is a big one for me but, the AC/DC Transformer takes up 1 plug space... with no brick! Its similar to many of the cell phone charger plugs used today.
All in all its a 6/6 stars but there are 2 things that make it a little unfrendly.
First off it takes a good chunk of space up on my shelf, which made replacing my old unit quite a hastle.
Secondly the buttons used for Navigating the LCD menu's are HORRIBLE! They built the buttons under a thick rubber overlay which require too much force to use them conviniently. You have to hold the unit to press them, else it will slide away from you or tips over. Even worse is the rubber mat makes it hard to determine which buttons your pressing.
Its an awsome unit for thoes with an eye for cool cutting edge features and strong fingers.. :)
It Really Works! And Much Faster too!!.......2007-12-11
I checked on various reviews on this Belkin N1 Vision, and I hesitated for a couple months before finally deciding on making a leap of faith, and it paid off.
I installed it to replace a previous smaller and older Belkin wireless router that I have, and the CD-less installation took me less than 15 mins to rehook everything back and got all of them working. That was nice.
What is even better is the speed it gives, there is no comparison with my previous router. It is fast! Much faster, a few times faster, I can say.
And lthough its 802.11n 2.0 is still a draft, the speed it is giving is great. It works also immediately and better with the Belkin 5-port Network Hub (F5L009) that I have, and all the devices like harddisk and printer I have connected through the network hub, again with much faster speed.
Same goes for the LaCie Ethernet Mini Network Drive that I access wirelessly through the router, from all of my PC's, both XP and Vista. No problems there either.
This is great!!
Beautiful design, poor software.......2007-11-20
My Netgear MIMO router with lots of blinking blue lights got me hypnotized one evening and made me wonder if a company would ever make a router with a LCD display to show if someone has somehow logged onto my LAN without permission. The next night my Netgear router died and I discovered the N1 Vision. It was a sign from the wireless G heavens.
It is beautiful, it was packaged as if made by angels, and only twice what I wanted to spend on a router. The LCD screen is very pretty, and looks very cool. All of my machines (wired & wireless) connected just fine with very little time or effort. Even my Playstation 3 didn't cause a hiccup. The range is amazing, and connection speeds on the wireless are double what my Netgear could do. That, and I have only been able to lock the router up one time... but that was my own fault for changing lots of things in the configuration utility without giving it the appropriate time to save the settings. It is going on thirteen days straight without needing a manual resetting... not bad for my home! I don't expect this to be a major problem, unlike some other companies I've dealt with.
So, why only a 6 rating? Well, even with the latest firmware I am having a major LAN issue. Whenever a machine connects to the router, the DHCP assigns an IP, but doesn't seem to add it to its internal routing table. No other machines on the LAN can access it (file/print sharing, VNC, ping, etc.) and it cannot connect to anything else on the LAN, even though Internet access works just fine. Customer support has been worthless so far, and the only solution I have found is to do a software reset in the configuration utility (approximately 90 seconds). This seems to refresh the routing table for the LAN every time. Annoying, but a necessary evil right now to enjoy everything else this router has. I know that it will be fixed in some new future firmware, and I'm still deciding whether to wait it out or go back to some caveman wireless G router without a LCD display. That would be soooo 2006... hmmm.
It just works.......2007-11-11
Windows Vista 64bit and 43bit computers on gigabit link and Vista 32bit Toshiba laptop on wifi lan. Out of the box, it just worked. No problems, great thruput and range extends over my entire property. See a lot of complaints on this unit, but for me it is great. Replaced a netgear gigabit router that was trouble after trouble.

Best Router I have used, and only company I would buy!!!.......2007-11-23
I upgraded from belkins G router and I can't believe the WIFI speeds that I have attained from this router. Connectivity was extremely easy with the software and I can't complain about the size. With the front LEDs identifying the routers status you immediately know whether or not you're on the internet or wirelessly streaming even if someone else is connected so it also works as a security feature...Plus in my book. Buy it, use it, LOVE IT!
BEST Router I Have Ever Used.......2007-07-14
This is the router I have dreamed about! After using (2)D-Link, and Linksys products and experiencing horrible set-up and reliability problems (the last one a D-Link DI-624, which thankfully was fried by a lightning storm), and poor "wired" performance (Linksys WRT54G), this BELKIN (N1 High Perf.)F5D8231-4 is amazing. Very quick set-up with CD if you need it, quick reset of settings for amazing 20/40mhtz speed. Wired 2nd computer, wireless printer, and a wireless laptop(using N1 USB wireless adapter)all work perfectly. The "blue light" panel is amazing too.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - Unreliable Poorly Designed Product.......2007-05-31
Based on reviews on CNET, I purchased this router for well over $100. It is easily the worst wireless router I have come across. It routinely loses connection which is incredibly annoying if you are using a VPN or making internet phone calls. At first this was caused by my cordless telephone, but after replacing the phone the problem still persisted. (NOTE: I never had problems with interference using my previous router) The BELKIN tech support was completely useless even after the lengthy hold times (in excess of 35 minutes) if you were even luck enough to reach someone. They even have a specific menu option for this problem. When the connection is live, it is fast and has excellent range, but this is far out weighed by the random cutting in and out of the signal. My recommendation it to purchase another device. This is a totally unacceptable level of quality and service given the high price tag.
