Read your warranty and ask Viewsonic before purchasing.......2007-12-20
If you plan on purchasing a view sonic monitor, be advised. Viewsonic does not warranty their product if you clean it with any non approved cleaning substances. Viewsonic, according to customer service representatives do not currently have any approved cleaning products, and do not recommend touching your screen. Touching your screen in anyway constitutes abuse and voids your warranty as customer damage. Viewsonic also does not recommend using ANY color calibration devices on your monitor, as it constitutes customer abuse and is not covered under warranty. I right this because I had a view sonic monitor, calibrated it, and cleaned the "recommended way" the anti glare coating stated pealing off. Even though the products website said it was approved by Viewsonic. Viewsonic said tough it is not our problem that you damaged you monitor, you voided your warranty by cleaning it. I share this as a warning. the monitor was good while it lasted the first month.
not great.......2007-08-18
My monitor came without any cables of any kind: no power cable and no video cable. I called ViewSonic and spoke to someone who said it happens "a lot"; she took my e-mail address and said they'd send me replacement cables, but that should never have happened in the first place. (I own the necessary cables and was able to get the monitor working.)
Input is VGA only. That's really not very impressive. Most LCD monitors in this day and age allow for digital input.
I don't find that the brightness is uniform, either. There are bright areas and dark areas. No adjustable stand, and not much of a tilting or swiveling radius.
It's a 19-inch LCD monitor for a bargain price, and I enjoy the very large screen, but I can't call this an excellent product.
Cheap, not up to Viewsonic standards........2007-02-26
This is a low end model. If you are buying your first LCD and arent a heavy graphics user, this may work for you. But moving up from a Viewsonic 17" model, I am very disappointed in the sharpness, brightness, and color rendering on this "VGA Only" display.
I should have bought the Viewsonic VA912B with DVI, its even listed for $30 less than this model. Ugh!
goO.......2006-12-28
I dont know about any of the other reviews, but this monitor is very good. tack sharp colors, good blacks, no dead pixels, VERY GOOD
decent but not that great.......2006-12-23
This is my first LCD monitor and I'm not that impressed (though going from a 17" to 19" is better, obviously). I bought it at Fry's Electronics for [...] (before [...] mail-in rebate) but it will be going back.
Forget about gaming with this monitor--if you need completely black/dark areas, the natural "built-in" dark grey glare will be VERY annoying. No amount of contrast, brightness, and/or gamma adjustment helps either. White bleeding along the top edge doesn't help either. I don't know if the 300 cd/m2 brightness is good but, I figure, the higher the better.
Also, there's no DVI plug so the picture quality isn't that great. I don't know if the .294mm dot pitch has to do with this, also.
I tried dorking with the multiple monitor thing in WinXP but the monitor wouldn't work at 2048x1024 resolution after switching from 2 displays to 1--and no 15-second auto-revert--bug.
No wattage usage in poor excuse for a manual (3 pages per each language--bloating the quickstart guide unnecessarily) or PDF version (which, oddly, lists power saving mode off wattage of
<1W but just "Normal" for on--go figure). The Watts isn't even listed on the back of the monitor!
The PDF manual specs also fail to even mention the most basic of LCD specs: refresh rate, brightness thingy (cd/m2), and contrast ratio--lame. ViewSonic needs to learn how to be more thorough, obviously.
The viewing angle isn't that great--you have to pretty much be centered in the middle or else parts of the screen will get darker (particularly the top).
Looks like I'll be sticking with my CRT for now until LCDs get at least as good in terms of complete black pixels and odd resolution handling (multisync, I guess--though I know some LCDs have this so maybe those are better).

better than expecter.......2007-05-21
This monitor was a surprise. I find the quality excellent. It is very bright and colors are strong. I did not know ViewSonic's reputation and I find it more to my liking than Samsung or Dell. This may not be for the professional seeking a neutral color critical worksapce. but for everyday use the color are very pleasing and it is eazy on the eyes.I paid about $170.
Great monitor, great price.......2007-01-19
I have had one of these for almost 2 years with absolutely no problems. The monitor looks great aesthetically as well as produces great color and images. It's been connected to two different computers, originally my wife's desktop with integrated video and then on a gaming machine with a higher end ATI card. The only downside is the VGA-only connection and no DVI, but that's the reason for the lower cost. I'm currently shopping for another monitor to create a dual-screen setup and am planning on buying another va702b to go with the first.
Short Lifespan.......2006-12-01
I purchased 2 Viewsonic LCD monitors and both lasted about a year and a half before the left side of the screens went dark. No diagnostics or interactions could bring them back to normal. I contacted customer support and was told that Viewsonic would do nothing. Maybe I was stupid or naive by not getting a warranty beyond the first year, but I assumed that a good product, made from good parts, from a company that desires to satisfy its customers with a good QA/QC program to ensure that quality products are being produced, could make a product that would last longer than a year and a half. Faulty assumption. With 2 LCD moniotrs having the same problem, lasting about the same length of time and on 2 different computer systems, this strongly indicates to me a non-coincidental problem within Viewsonic. I will not buy anything from Viewsonic again. I will spend a little more, if I have to, to buy a relaible product from a reliable company.
I like it.......2006-07-22
I chose this Viewsonic to replace my 19" Viewsonic CRT. I'm finding the colors to not be as rich as the CRT, but the screen is clear and no apparent dead spots. I'm going to purchase the 19" LCD monitor this fall. I am happy with my purchase. No problems with Amazon nor packaging. Monitor arrived before estimated arrival time - that was a plus.
Very nice inexpensive monitor.......2006-06-22
I disregarded the extremely negative reviews about the 702B here and purchased the monitor anyway. Other information resources provided much higher unilateral marks. Additionally, I have years of experience with ViewSonic and have never had a poor one.
The monitor arrived and was installed. There were no dead pixels and it functioned perfectly out of the box, even before the drivers were installed. The monitor itself is very attractive and imagery colors vivid and sharp. I have noted no ghosting at all. The refresh rate appears to satisfy the most video intensive and demanding games my grandkids enjoy.
I did, however, determine that matching my video card resolution to the 702b optimum native resolution(1280x1024) enhances a game's appearance and performance substantially. Our preferred resolution setting(1024 X 768) produces absolutely no problems with other applications and is not an issue. It only takes a few moments to make the change and is well worth the effort, rest assured. Onboard controls are adequate for critical adjustments. The default brightness was a bit high, but that was because the video card had been adjusted for the original monitor. A quick tweak on the card control panel resolved the minor problem immediately, adding even more richness and depth to the color and contrast. I strongly recommend that you synchronize your video card with the monitor to achieve maximum viewing pleasure.
A wonderful key feature is the full 90+ degree tilt ability of the screen structure. Too many of the monitors offered these days are on a fixed pedestal. This feature is important for use in a room where light variations and glare may occur. The 702b has no height adjustment, but the one they chose as standard is ideal. It is not as defined as my 19" Sony, but it didn't cost $700 either.
I purchased the unit for a Dell 8100 that I retired to our beach home, replacing a bulky 17" CRT monitor. The 702B is a terrific value, yet does not compromise quality for that advantage. Many visitors at our second home comment about the fine images the 702b produces, thus this opinion is shared by others as well. So, I am a happy camper responding to the mixed bag of reviews here at Amazon. I hope it provides others with additional insight before making a purchase decision.

Nice Picture, Terrible Life.......2007-06-06
I have one of these at work. It was new out of the box probably two months ago and already has images starting to burn in. That is just pathetic. The speakers are "OK" for integrated monitor speakers. The picture quality is very nice at it's native resolution... but I wouldn't recommend this monitor to anyone. Ever. Burn in after just a few months is totally unacceptable.
WARNING: IMAGE BURNS.......2007-02-08
I bought this monitor and about six months later images began to burn-in across the top of the screen. I'm not talking about images that burn in after you leave a program open for eight hours without a screensaver. No, this monitor gets image burns after using a program - ANY PROGRAM - for only a few minutes. They do go away...if you turn your monitor off and unplug it from the power source FOR ABOUT A WEEK! And then the burn-in images come back after about FIVE MINUTES of surfing the web! By the way, ViewSonic's "Limited Warranty" apparently does not cover image burns, so don't waste your time calling customer service. When it comes to computer monitors, better stick with tried-and-true brands: Sony, HP, etc.

I purchased 2 Viewsonic LCD monitors and both lasted about a year and a half before the left side of the screens went dark. No diagnostic queries or interactions could bring them back to normal. Maybe I was stupid or naive in not getting a warranty beyond the first year, but I assumed that a good product, made with good parts, from a company that desires to satisfy its customers with a good QA/QC program to ensure that quality products are being produced, could make a product (or 2) that would last longer than a year and a half. Faulty assumption. With 2 LCD monitors having the same problem, lasting about the same length of time, and on 2 different computer systems, this strongly indicates to me a non-coincidental problem within Viewsonic. Poor quality and poor manufacturer support.......2006-05-25
When I first got this monitor I was thrilled. It's sleek looking and the 2 inputs were nice, since I could use it for 2 machines. I started to notice there's a lot of light bleeding in on the edges... a lot more than I notice on my LG or my Dell Notebook screen. Then I was faced with a permanent green stripe down the left side. After much trouble, I finally got a replacement sent from Viewsonic.
The replacement is almost as bad. I've got all sorts of image "burning" (where it looks like my last screen is embossed onto the background). I'm now going to have to go through the whole hassle of trying to get this replaced again, as it makes the picture quality terrible.
so far, 2/2 have been terrible, and the manufacturer support hasn't been very good, they forgot to send my last replacement for a couple weeks (said it'd bee 3-5 business days).
Don't buy this model, and carefully consider the entire manufacturers line...
Well worth the price!.......2006-05-11
ViewSonic has not let me down yet! Their monitors last forever and they're top quality - hence the price. You will not get a better value for your dollar. I am a graphic designer who has to stare at pictures and text all day long and this monitor is really easy on my eyes. It has good contrast, brightness, and color controls, and text is crisp and clear. It comes with two cables - regular VGA and digital DVI. I'm sure with the DVI it is an even better picture, but my video card is analog and even the VGA is great quality.
I listen to internet radio at work on the built-in speakers - and I can hear the music clearly across the 20' long room. It's decent quality, just don't expect it to sound quite like a live concert.
The thing I love most is this monitor causes less eye strain than CRTs (you blink less when you use a CRT), and its footprint is so small I can set it 24 to 36" away from my face - the recommended distance for minimizing eye strain. The huge CRT it replaces had to sit about 16" from my face and that gave me awful headaches. I am happy to say no more headaches since my boss got this amazing monitor for me!

Customer Reviews:
Decent monitor.......2007-01-14
Bought an NEC Multisync LCD 1770VX monitor a few days ago on Ebay for $140.00 new--or open box, more likely. Shortly after the auction, I came apon the few reviews to be found for this monitor which say it's overall design is fine but that its image quality is mediocre--specifically, it has less dynamic range than competitiors, the lighter grey tones falling off into white (clipped highlights) and the darker greys falling off into black too quickly. I didn't want to hear this after buying the monitor for judging digital photos. but there was nothing to do but see for myself when it arrived.
The monitor arrived in its product box and I was easily able to hook it up to an old Apple G4 mirror door Power Mac with the monitor's enclosed cable. Turning it on and judging initial results with some familiar digital photos, the images showed much too much contrast and exhibited characteristics that matched the reviews. But the images improved considerably with adjustments, both through the monitor controls and the Apple monitor programs for selecting and modifying profiles. The monitor looked best when its brightness and contrast levels were set well below 50% by the monitor's controls. Images could also be individually adjusted in Photoshop to look just fine. The highlight clipping is minimal and seems to be most obvious in JPG images that were over-exposed to begin with. There is software not in the box available from NEC that permits adjustments to the monitor by your keyboard--but it only works in Microsoft (and possibly Apple's newer products).
Since I bought the monitor to just peruse Iphoto images and the results are really quiet good, the monitor is a keeper. Images on the monitor do display considerable change in value or saturation when viewing the screen from different angles, something not unique to this monitor. If an image fills the entire field of view, the top will be darker than the bottom of the scene--but then, this isn't an Apple monitor.
All in all, this is a better monitor than the reviews give it credit. It is very compact and doesn't clutter the desk. Full retail price seems steep and is steep compared to current Ebay prices.

Perfect LCD Monitor!!!.......2007-10-28
I bought this 17" AOC LM742 on sale at CompUSA for $140.00 and I'm glad that I did. Hooked it up to my 14" Gateway Notebook. MUCH IMPROVED!!!
It's slim, and it's build really well.
You can find a better deal.......2007-07-03
I only bought this monitor b/c I had to match it to the same model for someone who wanted to run a dual-monitor application. The monitor is not bad. But for the price you can find a 19" monitor with just as good response time, resolution, and contrast ratio. Unless you specifically need this model, like me, then you can definitely find a better monitor for the price.
