Please be aware that there is a known defect in the Vaio line. I personally have had direct experience with this having my Vaio die on me as a result of a "cracked motherboard" only 14 months of having it. It is a known defect in the Vaio design. I urge anyone who reads this to be very catious about buying a Vaio and consider an alternative, more reliable computer.

"The issue stems from the memory SODIMM slots. The solder joints that connect the SODIMM's to the motherboard are breaking, causing one or both memory modules not to be polled, or counted, towards total system memory...Sony than charges $700-$1200 to repair it"

Short and simple... Everything about this laptop screams attention to detail. For those who are familiar with Sony's VAIO line, you are not going to be disappointed except one thing - Visa. Aside from that blemish, the 2 gigs of RAM is more than enough to multitask with minimal slowdown. The 200 gig hard drive is good for almost all your docs. and multi-media files. (If it's not, get a external drive) It's light, and durable for normal use, e.g., taking it to cafes, school, libraries, work in your backpack or satchel. Gaming is doable, however, for the hard core gamers you might want to take a pass. The best thing is the price. I went to the Sony web-site and even call Sony direct and they couldn't beat the price I got from Amazon, i.e., with tax and shipping added in. I'm still debating on reinstalling XP, but there is no doubt about getting this laptop. -D

Best laptop I've ever owned.......2007-12-20

I have nothing but good things to say about this Sony model. I was so impressed with it that I bought a second one after having the first for 3 months and may buy a third. I'm using both to develop and test high-end graphical analysis and diagnostic software for medical applications. There may be issues for some users installing old software applications because they are not supported by the Vista operating system, but this would be true for most new computer purchases. It is fairly difficult to find any laptop with XP installed and if you do find one, there is usually a waiting period to have it delivered and you will pay a premium price for it.

Since I bought this computer I have had it in for servicing more than anyone should expect. seems to crash or stop working for no reason and sony service can never explain why. Sony promised extras like a backpack and walkman which I never got. will never buy sony product again.

This system received a two from on one premise: onboard video card. A lack of "true" video card causes this laptop to be useful no more than basic video, lackluster gaming, and a slue of other graphically non-intensive operations. If you are looking to buy this for a student, stay clear. This laptop would be fine for limited business applications (office suites and email for example), that is about all.

After uninstalling preinstalled software, it's a great computer for the price........2007-12-28

The biggest problem is that it comes with Vista and hundreths of preinstalled software that turn the machine slow. The Recovery CDs are not included, you got to make them from the OS. After you create then, and reinstall partioning the Hard Disk, uninstall all the preinstalled software and tune up Windows Vista for performance (i mean, no AERO Themes), the machine works great and fast (even with Vista).

I strongly recommend this machine, but only if you would do the "hard work" described.

Ive had many laptops. My favorite was my mac book, to bad for the hard drive randomly dieing. This computer is close to a mac book.

Looks great! Thin and textured. Light weight. Screen is bright and beautiful.

Windows vista is really cool. Ive heard so many bad things about vista, I like it better than Windows XP. After a service pack and a couple of years, vista will be a good operating system. Windows XP was looked down upon from the start.

It kinda gets hot! That worries me. Wouldn't put it on my lap.

Upgraded the memory, it had two 512 memory cards installed, so when you buy a 1 gig card, one 512 goes buy buy.

Keyboard is awesome! Keys are spread out and aren't to close together, wished there was a scroll wheel built in though.

Pros:
I ordered without hesitation my first vaio laptop about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and I gotta tell you that i'm very satisfied with it. It has a unique and durable sony textured-minimalist desigh with an incredibly soft and comfortable keyboard. It runs vista faster that I expected (because of the bad reviews I read before). It runs very quiet.

Cons:
It's a bit heavy than most dell laptops, and It has only one direct access button, which can be customized for several aplications by pressing it several times (handy though).
It doesn't come with any restoring cd's, they take 20 GB for that (including PRELOADED JUNKWARE), and If u're buying a 160GB like I did, you're ONLY getting 140GB of storage, pretty disappointing.

You must understand, before buying, that this is a "cheap" model compared to the Vaio TZ series, and It can be used only for music storage, internet surfing, Ms Office applications and for some other stuff like Windows live messenger. However, for US$ 815 it's a sony :D AND IT TOTALLY WORTH IT

I purchased a VAIO laptop two years ago. I still haven't had any problems with it. I just purchased my husband this VAIO for Christmas, and he loves it! User friendly, perfect size. The only thing I DON'T like is all the pre-loaded promotional ware (Spiderman trailer, etc) but one can easily delete all that. Another bonus of buying this from Amazon is you don't pay sales tax! Now THAT'S awesome! :)

Great Laptop for a reasonable price.......2007-12-19

I just received it yesterday, so my review may need some updates later.

1st - it took me couple hours to remove everything that was preinstalled on this laptop by Sony. After I removed all unwanted software, the laptop became noticeably faster.
2nd - DVD drive did not work and I found some more people complaining about this issue online. I contacted Sony customer service online and they provided me with the instructions how to fix this issue (it took 5min to make some changes in the registry).

Overall, I would give 5 stars, however, because of the issues mentioned above, I'm giving it 4 stars.

this is a really great Sony product. It is light, it is fast, great screen and works very well with Windos Vista Premium. What are the "cons" ?.. too many trials that are not so easy to put to work or even not really cheap to buy; I took out the Norton as it was too heavy even to this equipment; I faced some problems with Adobe, as there was a trial installed and when I tried to download the Reader version, it never worked because the system called all the time the pre-installed trial version... so my recommendation; eliminate all the unacessary trials you have - there are too many - and work with what you really want. Finally, the battery life is not significant. If you plan to work unplugged, think for buying a large capicity battery VGP-BPL8.
Despite this cons, I really recommend this notebook.

Item was not in a good condition.......2007-11-02

I ordered this item on oct 1st with 2 day shipping but got the item on Oct 2nd i was very happy with the shippment, as i had to pay nothing for shipment and i started using this Sony for couple of weeks this was very good. After that the screen started flickering and i started seeing lines on the screen. I think i got a defective peice and luckily before one month only i could find out that otherwise i wouldn't have got my entire refund.

Now i am about to recieve my refund as of Nov 2nd.

I dont recommend this product as i was very big fan of Sony Viao and thinking that it will last for more time but for my it was very big disappointment.

I have 2 dell laptops and i wanted one more for my brother so i ordered one more dell.

I'm happy with this notebook, I have purchased 3 of them already for myself and family and they work pretty well with Vista. They are light to carry comparing to other notebooks in the market. However, something that annoys me the most about this notebook is the noisy buttons below the touchpad. Also the built in webcam won't work sometimes and I have to restart the computer to use my webcam which is pretty annoying as well.

Best Widescreen Entertainment Laptop.......2008-01-01

Folks,

This is by far the best wide screen entertainment Laptop you can get for your money. Rated as the Best Mainstream laptop by Wired magazine's Best Gadgets of 2008 edition.

It has one of the most gorgeous screens you will see on a laptop (supposedly Sony has used the technology from their Bravia Television), real good for gaming as it has a good GPU. You also get an optional Blu Ray writer drive and its cheap compared to all other brands that offer such drive. The keyboard and appearance (from front) looks like a Macbook Pro. Performs really well with vista, have seen lot of other brands with similar configuration being very slow with vista, not this one though.

To sum it up, let me quote from Laptop magazine's review 'Think of it as a MacBook Pro for the Windows set--one with more bells and whistles'.

Compre hace mas de un año una vaio vgn-fe680g, con especificaciones parecidas a esta, Pero esta nueva Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240E/B 15.4", tiene el doble de memoria RAM, el doble de procesador core 2 duo, tiene 100 Gb mas de disco duro, es mas liviana y mas pequeña que las anteriores.
Es una laptop genial, es pequeña y liviana, muy rapida, la bateria dura bastante tiempo, la pantalla brilla como ninguna otra. Reconoce los dispositivos perifericos rapidamente. Y solo he tenido problemas con la camara web integrada, que aun no la reconoce el windows movie maker.
De resto, todo espectacular
la recomiendo 100%

By far, one of the best laptops I have come across. I was skeptical of getting a laptop because I didn't think it would be an ideal replacement for my desktop. Everything works great and I love it. The only thing I was ask for is a cleaning cloth for the screen, bluetooth and longer battery life. Other than that, I have no complains yet. :) Highly recommend.

This notebook is powered by the 1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The Basics

Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor has a 1.5 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
- Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.

Hard Drive: The 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. However its 4200 RPM speed is a bit slower than current standard hard drives. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2) is a decent start, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.
