I had been trying to decide between a CD or mp3 player. I walk a lot, as well as work out at the gym. I basically like to either listen to the radio, or play disco (yes, disco) music to get my juices flowing.
I settled on the CD player, as I really don't want to bother downloading songs, when I have a dozen CDs that will do what I want.
I am absolutely delighted with this player. The sound is clear, and the radio stations come in strongly. Even while on a treadmill, the player never skipped.
I was not completely thrilled with the controls, but in short order, learned to master them. Forget about the earbuds, which I could not keep from falling out of my ears. I bought a separate set of Sony earphones. The remote control is a nice touch, but I have yet to use it.
Yes, the personal CD player is an anachronism, but suits the bill perfectly for me.

The sound quality is really good, but the controls are tiny and take some getting used to. I'm glad I've had laser eye surgery so I can see them! You need a 3 V power adapter, NOT a 4.5 V, which is what I bought mistakenly because they were recommended together on Amazon. Also, I was freaking out at first when this loud BEEP would indicate every function (play, pause, etc.) I thought "Why on earth would Sony think music lovers want to hear beeps?!? Don't we get enough of that with microwave ovens, car alarms, and trucks backing up?!?" So I called Sony support and someone led me through the steps to turn the beep function off. I'm sure I will need to do a little homework with the manual for all the functions, but it is a very cool, lightweight, multi-functional product.

Boyfriend loves his little walkman. This was a hit. In an age where $10.99 will buy you a personal cd player, $53 seemed a bit over-priced. However, I wanted some very specific features such as weather and TV bands and this was the only return on my search that was made by a company I trusted.
Yes. I love Sony products because they almost always do exactly what they say they will do and tend to last as long or longer than competition.
This product is no exception.
All I needed was the big smile on my boyfriend's face for confirmation. He tells me he plays it every day and loves the sound quality. It took him no time to figure out how to play with all the features.
This is worth the money. Good product with Sony quality.

I'm very impressed with the sound quality of this nice little player. The tuner gets excellent reception, especially considering the area in which I live. On some stations it gets better reception than my car radios.
I'm a little skeptical about the single AA battery and how long it will last.
Like some of the other reviewers, I had problems with the little earplugs. They're easily dislodged while walking, especially if the remote is held in one hand. The latter happens because the earplugs connect to the back of the remote - not directly to the walkman. As a result the two wires eventually become twisted up and tangled, thus yanking on the plugs.
I tried other headsets I had around the house and settled on my old-fashioned Panasonic headset with large earpads (but not so large I can't hear what's going on around me). It stays in place, is very stable, and provides much better sound than those little buttons.
Another thing I found useful is to attach the little remote control to a coat or shirt pocket button via the keyring it has on one end. That eliminates the earplug yanking that occurred when the wires got twisted. For me it's easier to access this way than the walkman itself, especially on cold days when I have the player stuffed deep in a heavy coat pocket. Now that I've had a little practice I can just tap it with a finger to get what I want.
It all works for me this way. Not a bad little toy at all. I gave it 4 stars because of those troublesome earplugs; otherwise it would have rated a 5.
UPDATE: as I suspected, the single AA battery turned out to be an issue. In addition to having a very short life, there's no audible warning when the battery is low. A CD suddenly stops playing, and that's that. If you press "Play" again, THEN an audible warning tone is heard. I don't have the option to modify the rating in this editing form, but if I did I'd downgrade it another star to 3.
It's too bad Sony compromised the quality on this one with those cheap headphones and that single battery design.

Just a few suggestions...The buttons could be bigger and the operating systems are very complicated... on several occasions I thought I had turned it off when the CD player was still on. The company was excellent. The first one did not arrive and they sent a replacement... no questions asked. I got it two days later. Highly recommend them!

Having a CB radio while traveling can be an invaluable tool for emergencies and for keeping up on road conditions, and the Midland 75-820 40-channel handheld CB is one you should definitely consider. It comes with everything you need to get started in a hurry, including a battery pack for times you want to run the unit on six AA batteries and a cigarette lighter adapter for battery-free operation in your car.
The Midland 75-820's design is ideal, with a push-to-talk button on the side, squelch and volume knobs, and a small LCD screen that displays the current channel, signal strength, and a variety of other useful information. Several buttons on the device can be used for scanning, whether quickly flipping between the emergency channel (9) and the standard highway channel (19) or activating the LCD's backlight. The unit also comes with a short, flexible antenna.
Overall, the 75-820's portability is excellent--comparable to a child's walkie-talkie. Unfortunately, the unit's compactness hampers its usefulness, because the relatively small antenna has a hard time pulling in distant signals. In our tests on local highways and on the interstate, transmissions rarely could be heard from more than half a mile away. However, when we connected the Midland 75-822 to a whip antenna that was several feet long, the range increased considerably. As a result, we recommend investing in a better antenna before using the device in your car, although the radio still works well for communicating with nearby semis when you're trying to find out the source of a traffic jam.
We had better luck using the radio to monitor National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio broadcasts, which we were able to receive from nearly anywhere since Weather Radio stations transmit at much higher power than mobile transmitters. These broadcasts are repeated every few minutes, are updated every few hours, and can help alert travelers to severe weather conditions. It's a nice feature to have on a portable CB and makes the Midland 75-822 a standout choice for travelers who want to be in the know. --T. Byrl Baker

Midland Handheld.......2007-12-09
I Ordered the Midland Handheld CB radio and received it 24 hrs later. As others have said, its a nice handheld CB but is useless without an external antenna. I've driven around with it in Philadelphia for 3 days and have only heard people speaking 2 times. The range has to be close to 1-200 feet with the attached ducky antenna. I will receive a Wilson Lil Wil external antenna in 2 days and will be able to comment further on its use with an external antenna. One comment however that noone else has mentioned. In order to use an external antenna, you have to use the D/c adapter that comes with the radio. You cannot connect an external antenna and use the radio on either of the 2 supplied battery packs. The mobile adapter that connects to the radio has the connection for an external antenna attached. Therefore, no mobile adapter (dc connector), no place to connect an external antenna. My reason for purchasing this unit was because I was already running so many things off of dc in my car (radar detector, GPS charger, digital scanner etc.) For the price, this radio operates the same as other radios that run off d/c that cost 1/2 the price. I ordered a Uniden pro520xl that I plan on installing in my other car. If all works out, I may scrap the midland 75-822 and just get another uniden since they both require d/c connections thereby making them mobile and not portable.

Very poor reception with the factory antenna, I tried it with another antenna mount to the roof, it was a little bit better. I like it because it's compact and out of the way, good quality radio.

I used this radio on 2000 mile 4 day trip on my harley and worked good the whole time, keep in mind though it only has a 4 watt output so range is lacking compaired to the other bikes i was with.

This CB radio was purchased for the express purpose of a communications device to be used exclusively on a motorcycle for bike to bike communications and weather info. It is very small and works perfectly. I had to make a holder with bracket, but that only took about 20 minutes. I purchased a separate headset kit to fit the helmet, but after all that, I still only had a total of $165. in all for my complete setup. My other biker friends spent up to as much as $800. I am a journalist and use the device for recording interviews. The weakness of this device is the Sony proprietary file format.If they would only record in MP3 format you could download, file and play from your computer. Instead I back up on the computer, erase and if later I want to refer back I have to reinstall onto the device to play. It sucks, what were they thinking.

I want to recommend the Sony ICD-SX57 to anyone who needs a small high quality voice recorder. The recording ability is excellent, size and shape are perfect and High Quality Stereo recording time is four hours. There is one issue to be aware of. The unit comes with non-rechargable batteries but is set to "CHARGE" batteries when connected to USB, as a default setting. This will probably cause the batteries to melt and ruin the unit as another reviewer discovered. Navigate the menu and change the USB to "NOT CHARGE" if you are using non-rechargable batteries, before connecting to a USB port. As a voice recorder the Sony ICD-SX57 far exceeded my expatations.

I've been searching forever for an easy-to-use, reliable digital voice recorder to record sermons and other events for our church to podcast. Finally picked up one of these this week, and was thrilled with its easy operation and terrific recording quality in a few short tests. Today it also came through its first full-length sermon recording with flying colors. Looked like a total winner.
Then I came home, connected it to the computer, downloaded and edited the file, and left it connected for a couple of hours while I did some other work at my desk. After a while, I heard an odd fizzing sound. By the time I looked over to see what was making it, the sound had disappeared. Happened two more times. Finally, I touched the recorder to move it out of the way to get something else, and discovered it was blazing hot. I immediately yanked it off the USB cable and moved it off the papers it had been sitting on. Then I noticed a bluish-green drop of goo where the device had been sitting. After letting it "cool" for about 10 minutes (during which it actually stayed amazingly hot), I was able to touch it with bare fingers and I pulled out the batteries. They were very gooey and the paint on the labels had liquified.
Not a good sign for a brand new device. And, yes, I was using the Sony batteries that came packaged with the recorder, so there's no chance I used the wrong kind.
I'd love to give this thing five stars for the recording quality, size, ease of use, user interface and all those very good things. But it definitely gets a 0 for safety (can't imagine what might have happened if I hadn't been sitting there when it started to sizzle), and that's got to trump all else - can't burn down the house or church for the sake of a nice, crisp recording.
Addendum: The recorder comes with two non-rechargeable Sony AAA batteries. The instruction book warns you to make sure the batteries are installed before connecting it to the computer with the USB cable. But using the supplied non-rechargeable batteries while the device is connected causes the batteries to explode. (It has actually happened twice to me now - I tried it again a week after the incident described above, and the same thing happened...in less than 20 minutes.) I tried connecting it to the computer a third time, however, with NO batteries installed, and it worked fine...despite the instructions to the contrary in the manual. Also, I would presume that using rechargeable batteries would be a good alternative, since it's likely the non-rechargeables are exploding because the recorder is trying to charge them through the USB cable. The recorder does have a setting that allows you to turn off the battery charge function while the device is connected to the USB cable...but while this seems like a good solution, when I tried it with the non-rechargeable batteries, the computer didn't recognize the device when it was connected. So the best, safest option seems to be using nothing but rechargeable batteries...and keeping non-rechargeables away from the thing at all costs.

I should have known. I read a lot or reviews and this seemed to be the product for me. The description says it supports wav and mp3 formats. Problem is you have to run the software on a PC to get that to happen. The msv file format is not compatible with a Mac. Looks like this is going back.

I can't believe people are giving this thing a good review. They are either technical geniuses, and have modified the unit, or are Cobra employees.
I bought three of these, used the magnet external antenna, and all three produced a 3/10 of mile line of sight transmission range. Motorola "talk-about" radios work better than this, and with no external mount.
The only thing this is good for is monitoring truckers while driving.
The 'sound tracker' is a joke... just a fancy equalization adjustment.
Looking into a permanent under dash unit instead.

If you want it for weather, great; but if you want it for transmitting for CB purposes, don't bother. i bought 2 and what a waste! They can only transmit well up to 600 feet, and tops out at 1/2 mile. If you live in town, that may not matter to you, but if you're in the country at all, it won't make it. Find a longer range unit cause this one is NOT it! i used a car model in my home with a antena on our TV tower that worked great for years. But this i repeat is a waste of $ for a CB! Sorry, but i must speak the truth, wish i could get a refund!

when i recieved this item i was really impressed with the construction. it was not some cheap plastic pice of junk with crappy signal and even crappier transmistion. with the normal antenna i am able to keep in contact with my friends on the road for about 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile (easy), with the added roof antenna we have been able to talk to each other at about a mile apart (have not had a chance to test it further yet) without any signal loss. the extra features of the CB are nice and it is heavy enough to know that it is made to last but not too heavy to put on your belt all day long. also the power adaptor makes it great to conserve battery life on long drives. if you have a car and have difficulty mounting a normal radio or just want a portable version, this is it!!
A Handy Dandy Portable CB.......2007-03-14
I used this CB a few weeks ago during an off-road rock crawling run out in the Mojave desert, just outside of Barstow, CA (one of the last known hangouts of the Manson Family). Without the external antenna, the CB worked great. I have not yet tried the external antenna, but I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't work fabulously. For $79, I would say that the CB is a great deal. I was and still am completely satisfied with it.

Retro looks, terrible sound........2007-07-26
This turntable is certainly one that looks good if you're going for that retro look, but it's sound quality is almost unacceptable. It's nice that it can play 78's, as I've inherited some of my grandmothers old 78's, but for anything else, it's not worth it. The overall sound is tinny and a poor representation of vinyl's potential. I had motor problems not long after I received it; it kept stopping in the middle of a song, sometimes with enough force to send the stylus scratching across the record surface. I don't know if the motor was overheating or what, but it was unacceptable, and it certainly is not good for the records. I would recommend spending a few more bucks and going with a lower-end Technics or Rega instead of this, if you're looking for good quality sound. If not, and retro looks are all you really want out of this turntable, this is the turntable for you.

This item is a wonderful machine for educational programs. It has settings for all three speeds. Unfortunately, the cord and adapter do not fit inside. We had to sew a bag which attaches to the carrying handle in order to keep the cord with the product. Seems kind of labor intensive for something we paid so much money for.

Please save your money and do not buy this record player. I tried one at Rite Aid and brought it back. Horrible sound, crooked tonearm, cheap vinyl cover, etc. Nothing like the quality of older record players like the Webcor. Not worth half the money. Forget the older look and buy a quality Numark PT01. You will be happy you did.

Product work fine once you figure out it's little idiosyncracies. Had a lot of trouble getting the computer to recognize the adapter whenever i unplugged it. Had to remove and reinstall the software on occasion. Also remember once it tells you that a connection has been established you may still need to press the button on the RIGHT side of the headphones (Motorola HT820) to hear anything. Would recommend it if you can get it at a good price like i did, but would not buy it retail.

This little unit works great for me along with an H500 bluetooth headset. I use it for making calls via Skype and have had great success. I bought mine used from another very large online auction site and also didn't receive any drivers.
A resourceful and web savvy internet user could have easily found them and had them installed in less than 20 minutes....At least that's what I did. Lot's of folks have them posted on FTP servers and other locations. They are out there, you just need to put forth a little effort in finding them.
My experience with this product has been just fine.

Good For The Money.......2007-08-03
I bought this item to use on an aluminum jon boat. I have used it twice now and I'm happy with it's performance. It is also nice in the fact that it is portable. The only problem I have experienced is it gives a false reading sometimes when traveling too fast. For the money, I would say the unit is well worth it.

And while most GMRS channels require an FCC license to operate, channels eight through 14 are low-power FRS channels that are license free. lacking in extras.......2007-05-25
I assumed this had the features listed for other Gxt series but it doesn't. The radio has 1 senitivity level for vox (as oppossed to 3), has no 100+privacy channel availability (like other gxt models), no NOAA weather channel, and no rechargable battery pack (which I didnt' expect it to). The range was about the same or slightly less that the uniden 2059ck (20 mile) set I also got (7-8 blocks where one is in the house and the other is in a car). The uniden had much better features (see my review). The brochure they send with the unit states " all gxt series radios" and then list the features including 3 levels of VOX, 121 privacy codes, monitor and channel scan (there is monitor feature but no scan), vibrate alert, noaa weather channel. I got the surveillance headsets and on vox they work well (although you have to turn your head to your lapel to talk into the mic and be heard). Antonline is great, I got the product in 1 week from order, shipped next day UPS.
