Problems after 6 months........2007-08-18
After 6 months of using the monitor it started to develop problems. The adjustment buttons on the front of the monitor are randomly going off. It is still under warranty, but the closest repair center is 400 miles away and I have to pay for the shipping both ways! It still works, but the buttons going off by themselves are very annoying because a menu screen is always popping up.

I bought this monitor to replace a Dell monitor that died. The price is good and the image is clear (probably better than the Dell it replaced). My only complaint is that the brightness, contrast, etc. buttons are small with black on black images, and they're hard to read. This is not a giant problem, since I set them once and haven't needed them since.

I have been using a 15" dell flat screen monitor at my home. I needed a new monitor for my office, and decided to upgrade my home monitor with this 17" Samsung, and take the Dell to work.
The resolution on the Samsung was disappointing. Simple type was slightly muddy. I played with the various controls, finally came to the conclusion that the product is inferior to the inexpensive Dell monitor I already had. When I unplugged the Samsung, and replaced it with the Dell, I was relieved! Much easier on the eyes.
I took the Samsung to my office, and placed it at a workstation that doesn't get much use :-(
Next time I purchase a monitor, I'm going to go to an actual store (!) (something I don't do much anymore) and look at the screen before I make my purchase.
My advise is the same to you. Make sure that you are happy with what you see. You're probably going to spend a lot of hours staring at this thing.

Good picture, good price and no dead pixels in either of the Samsung Syncmasters thet I bought (a 17" and a 19"). I have seen better pictures on other monitors but not for this price. I am very pleased with both of my Samsungs.

This LCD screen was very easy to hook up - via regular monitor port - and the software easy to install and useful. Having only worked with CRTs, I was amazed at the clarity of the screen, the vivid colors and the total lack of any missing pixel problems that I've read about other screens I researched here. The software was helpful in calibrating the screen for my specific use and home environment. And, it was easy to use as well.
The price was right, the shipping was great - fast and free ! One problem though -- UPS left the box right outside my apartment door. It's a large building with a school directly across the street. Ths was a definite no-no!
That aside, I am very pleased with this item and recommend it.

Some great reviews here of the 940MW, and I purchased mine (it's being closed out, I believe) on a super sale based on them. Thanks, folks. I'd like to add a couple of items.
Dot pitch on the unit is 0.282. This is fair for a monitor. I have a Dell Ultrasharp that's under 0.25 and the difference is quite noticeable. Lower, of course, is better.
Picture processing in TV-type applications is very good; better than Samsung's 720p 2007 LCD HDTVs, in my view. (Of course, the set comes with a standard NTSC tuner for analog over-the-air broadcasting, so will need a converter box eventually to pick up digital -- ugh.)
I'm using this as a transportable monitor and TV, so want to mate it with a DVD player on occasion. Am using the excellent Sony DVP-NS75H (see my review).
This monitor can play DVDs in upscaled HD and you'll be pretty amazed at what you get from some DVDs (not much difference with some movies produced with digital in mind, like LOTR, but most certainly on older content). It's a little bit of a work-around, though, and not documented in the manual, as I recall.
HERE'S HOW: You'll need to get an HDMI - DVI connector for the high-definition video (unlike HDMI to HDMI, it doesn't carry the audio); I bought the very good (posted as: ) Cables Unlimited, HDmi To Dvi-d Cable, 6ft from Amazon for about $12. For audio, don't try to connect between the A/V jacks on the DVD player and the Samsung. Instead, get an audio adapter to enable the standard A/V left and right RCA audio out connections from your DVD player to connect to the stereo phone jack in the back of the Samsung (next to the DVI connector). I found the RadioShack item number 274-369 for less than $4. I hope this isn't confusing; with a little experimentation you'll get great video and satisfactory audio in stereo.

I've had this monitor for 3 months and it was fine. Watching standard TV wasn't the best-the image just wasn't too clear in widescreen mode. I do like the Picture-in-picture mode, so I could watch SportsCenter while checking my e-mail. It looks great when I use it with my XBox 360 too.
But then...as I saw in some of the other reviews, I was having problems with it not turning on/off and today, it finally died. No response from it at all. Customer service seemed helpful and now I'm waiting for a new one. If not for this issue I'd have given this monitor 4 stars. We'll see if the new one is any better.

Well after my first one started turning itself off and requiring unplugged rest time before it would come back on I called Samsung. They shipped me a refurbished replacement and it worked for four days. Now it won't display anything. On to replacement number two...

I was looking to hook my computer up in our kitchen/dinning room and wanted the option of watching TV when not on the computer. This monitor works perfect. We do not have it hooked up to a HD broadcast, so it looks better from about 4 feet away than right up next to it. But either way it still looks good. I love surfing the internet and watching the basketball game in the PIP. We don't haver it hooked up to a stereo and use the TV speakers and it sounds GREAT! It has a lot of set up options to get the picture looking its best. And the remote has gread functions and is easy to use.
The monitor, itself, looks great. We always get great compliments from our friends!

Well, i bought this monitor about 2 months ago.. at the time i also needed a tv..so i thought this was a great buy..took it home set it up and boy it was awesome...the picture was great..(internet)....evrything was fine until about a month after i noticed that it would just shut down..then i would try to turn it back on and it wouldnt..so it takes for me to unplug for a few min then restart..since then it still shuts down..or freezez...i think that this item in general is defective..i noticed other people had the same problem..as of right now im waiting for my replacement...

This uses the same S-PVA panel as the $150 more expensive Eizo L568. After comparing the two, the Eizo certainly does provide more differentiation in similar colors than the 740T, and the L568's power supply also appears to be superior (the 740T flutters a bit with fast black to white transitions). However, they're both about equally accurate with the factory ICM profile installed. Where the Eizo shines is when you calibrate with a spectrophotometer, the big LUT and gamma correction provide a finer grain.
The backlights are near perfect, both displays bleed a little in an 'X' pattern from corner to corner, but this isn't even noticeable on anything but a pure black screen, and hardly so then.
This is the monitor to get for a desktop or lower end workstation if you prefer accurate colors to fast displays. But then, the pixel response is as specified. It's not a cheap TN part with deceptive g2g specifications and outright ignoring of the ISO standards. Many of the TN panels will actually ghost worse than this panel with it's higher pixel response spec.

The differentiation between the colors is incredible, but this is to be expected with a contrast ratio of 1500:1. I would give it 5 stars if it weren't for fact that response time is a little slow for the fast frame rate of a video game. However, for DVD playback 25ms is just fine. I am mainly using it with the DVI video out of my Mac Mini, but just for kicks I connected it to the DVI out of my Samsung SIR-T165 HD tuner. I set the output on the HD tuner to 720p. The combination of the sharp image from the high resolution HD broadcast, combined with the briliant colors from the high contrast monitor blew my socks off. If it weren't for the fact that I am spoiled with the 60+ inch image from my projector, I would permanently attach the 740T to my HD receiver.

Don't use this monitor for gaming.......2007-01-28
If, like me, you enjoy playing a variety of computer games, don't get this monitor. With a large number of games, the monitor "complains" about the resolution. The monitor is plainly able to display a variety of resolutions just fine, but it plasters a banner in the middle of the the screen that says "Not Optimal Mode. Use 1280x1024 @60Hz". After two minutes, the screen goes blank. If you turn the monitor off, then on, you get another two minutes. If you wish to remove the banner from the middle of the screen, press the "brightness" button, then the "menu" button. But you still only get two minutes of viewing time. This problem so completely trumps any considerations of clarity, contrast ratio, and brightness that I won't bother mentioning those minor criteria. I HATE this monitor because it can display all video signals just fine, it simply CHOOSES not to!

I picked this out for christmas, and i am telling you this monitor rocks! I love it! Games look and play fantastic on it, text is very crisp and easy to read, no eyestrain, 170 degree vewing angle, it looks great from all angles,its slim space saving design, webpages look fantastic on it, you just can't beat the performance for the price. 6 months later I still love this monitor. This monitor has recieved very good reviews online and for good reason, its the best 17" monitor there is!

I was looking for LCD monitor for years and years...from traditional CRT world, and this was my first LCD choice.
The result is, I am extremely satisfied with the crisp clear very bright quality. It's even way brighter and clearer than my 15 inch Powerbook.
I was considering to purchase one back in 2002 and contrast ratio trend was 400:1 or 450:1 by then. And I still remember how monitor quality was back then(we still have similar quality of LCD today). What I'm emphsizing is 600:1 contrast ratio spec which gives outstanding computing environment.
The detail of the display is just awsome because of 0.264mm dot pitch size I would say. (Compared to 0.284mm or something for other LCDs)
I agree this is simple LCD with not much option, such as dual display support, pivot function, lack of USB port etc.
But considering price, and if we just think of the MAIN FUNCTION of the monitor, this product has far more value than it's market price! I won't regret the choice I've made for the next 5 years or so. 3 year warranty is another merit.

I got this monitor from a freeflatscreens site and have been using it now for over a week. The first thing I noticed was that it was VERY bright compared to my old 17" standard monitor. The second thing I noticed was the vibrant colors that jump out at me, attracting my eyes to every detail. The next thing I noticed was the incredible viewing angle - I can look from any side, any direction and get *barely* any grayed picture (even still, it's clear and readable). Fourth, it is very easy to use the on-screen display buttons. Adjusting the color, brightness, sharpness, etc. is very easy to do to get the picture just the way you want it. Fifth, the monitor is very small... compared to my older monitor! When I look at this Samsung monitor from the side, it appears to be a very small size, but when I use it from the front I can tell that it has a VERY big screen! This thing takes up so little space on the desktop that it is very much worth its price tag. Next, the monitor can be adjusted to swivel up or down, but I haven't gotten it to swivel left-right yet - which doesn't really matter because I can just move it easily. Last but certainly not least, this monitor has GREAT specs! I've looked at many LCD monitors in this price range, but the Samsung 710N stood out because of its specs: 12ms response time (great for gaming), 600:1 contrast ratio (great for gaming or photo/video editing), 1280x1024 native resolution (great for anyone who multitasks), anti-glare coating (great for rooms with windows), 9.6 lbs (great for mobility), and best of all it comes with a 3-year warranty! I highly recommend this product!

Most user reviews of monitors say, "I looked at a lot of monitors..." Well, I've been looking at LCD monitors ever since they came out---o when I finally convinced my wife that we should move into the 21st century and replace our CRT, I knew quite a bit about LCD's!
I chose the 710N because it had the best combination of clarity, color, speed, and price. I haven't regretted it for a moment---it's an absolute joy. It looks every bit as good as the Sony my friend paid considerably more for.
Some people have complained that they couldn't find the model with the ivory frame, just the black. This boggles me. When you're looking at your desktop, a video, etc., why do you want a light-colored frame distracting you? (It makes as much sense to me as people who buy certain computers because the cases come in cute candy colors---but anyway...) Considering that you're focusing on the monitor's display, not the frame, I feel the frame should be as unobtrusive as possible. On the 710N, even the controls are smoothly integrated into the frame's bottom edge. It's as elegantly neutral a design as you'll find.
If you're shopping for your first LCD monitor, or upgrading from an older one, I don't think this great monitor will disappoint you.

Outstanding Warranty Service.......2007-05-09
I bought this unit about 18 months ago and use it primarily as a TV. It works fine. The other day the screen started acting up--it would go black after being on for a few hours, and if I turned it off and back on it would blank after a few seconds. I went to the Samsung Web site that night, and it said this was probably a bad backlight. So I submitted an online service request.
Samsung called the next morning to say that they would be shipping a brand new replacement unit to the nearest UPS Store. i would be able to pick it up in a few days and drop off the old one.
Sure, it would have been better if it never failed at all, but it is hard to see how they could do a better job of honoring the warranty. Great job, Samsung!

I really like this LCD television. The picture is clear and the colors are vibrant. The remote is on the small side and takes a certain touch to use it. The only problem that I had was programing it to our cable. My son came home and fixed it's for me and it fine. Can't beat the price and quality for the money.

So far I am very dissatified with the picture quality on this unit. I have adjusted the brightness all the way up to 100%, but the picture is still very dark. Adjusting contrast does not help. I have not had an opportunity to contact Customer Support on this issue yet. So I still have hope that it can be resolved.
Here's what you need to know.......2005-12-25
I plan on using this in my kitchen as both a PC and a TV. The picture for TV is better than my old TV.
The documentation is the main shortcoming of this product. I needed to access its menus to configure the input, and figuring out how to get up and down in the menu is a secret. If you download the manual from Samsung, you'll see that it originally had a more complex remote. Going up and down was probably easier with the other remote.
Here's the secret to getting up and down in the menu with the slim remote. You'll figure out right away that the volume buttons take you left and right in the menu. To go up and down, do this:
1. Press menu.
2. Press vol up or down to go left or right
3. Press menu.
4. Press the down arrow.
5. Press menu.
In other words, you have to press Menu every time you switch from left or right and then up and down. Menu also serves as the ENTER button to save your selection.

I am here shopping for my second SynchMaster for another location. Based on a year or so of using this on a daily basis I love the ability to put the tv pic down in the corner . Perhaps 10% of the screen.
Sharp pic on both the monitor and tv mode.
Setup was plug and play.
For the unhappy owner who complained about the picture in a picture it is TV on the monitor.
Remote loaded with regular batteries is still going strong without replacement. Hardly an environmental hazard.
