This is a 4:3 Screen with a white housing. It is nice for the money but is a bit of a pain to get it to go back up. Overall it is excellent for the money, I really can't complain.

The Elite screen arrived broken and I spent hours trying to find out why it was not retractable. Then I contacted the seller, the seller told me to contact the manufacturer. Initially they tried to mail me the broken part, it did not help. So the manufacturer mail me a new screen. I told them to test it to before mailing me junk :-). They did test it and it has been working since then. However I don't expect it to last for more than 1-2 years. You can tell it is not very durable.

The projector came with one endcap seriously cracked. Possibly related, the screen won't stay pulled down. So I put a weight on it and hammered down the metal thing that it hangs on. Every time I pull down on it I'm expecting it to come crashing down on me.

I bought an Elite screen a couple years ago. I had first bought a 108", worked good, but retracting was difficult. I decided a year later I wanted a bigger one. I gave the first one to a friend. The screen itself is great. However, the mechanism to retract the screen was broken on arrival. It was not broken in transit. It left the manufacturer in this condition. In order to ship a new one, they needed the end caps returned. This is where I found out that the end caps were broken on the inside. They sent a new one and it works great. Extremely easy to retract. My friend stated a few nights ago that she found her screen all the way to the floor. Apparently, the mechanism to retract the screen decided to give. We've tried ordering replacements parts, but the company refused to send any stating that they couldn't prove it was their screen even though we gave them the model no, order no., date it was ordered and had copy of a packing slip/invoice. Their website showed this exact model, but they stated that this is not one of their screens. Don't deal with this company. As someone said, they are cheap and in more than one way.

As we lifted the screen up on to the wall, the screen unrolled all the way and that was the end of that! It will simply not retract! What a horrible purchase!

This is a 16:9 screen in a black housing. I really like the black housing. The only thing I can say negative about it is that it is hard to get it to go back up from time to time. I really can't complain though because it is so inexpensive. I would recommend for the money,

After one year using in my home the internal system pull-down was broken. Its a poor little plastic piece less than $1.00 value. If you contact ELITE screen manufacture they ask you have to buy a new one because they don`t sell the plastic piece. Really a poor product, poor after sale attention. After all for a $100.00 price cost What we can receive ????

I've been using mine for about 4 months. In the beginning, it was difficult to make it go up, but I read these reviews before it arrived, so I was very careful with it. Now, my wife and 10 year old son can get it to go up on the first try. It takes a lot of finesse to make it retract, but once you figure out the proper wrist action, it usually goes up on the first try.
So far, it hasn't peeled off of the roller yet, and I've been using it all summer in a sometimes warm condo. (we live in VT, so the heat isn't normally a factor up here).
I like the picture quality of the screen. We used a bare wall with flat paint before this. The only problem is, 100" is still too small! Our projector puts out an image larger than the screen. Oops.

Based on the reviews that this screen is obviously of very poor quality and workanship, the manufacturer has the nerve to charge $157.50 for shipping on an item that weighs 18 pounds!!!
Looking at TigerDirect's standard shipping rate of .50 lb, the item would have to weigh close to 300 pounds to substantiate that rate for shipping! I guess they're trying to make up for such an inferior product by bilking the public for more money.
I guess anything is legal now when it comes to screwing people!!

Arrived Damaged, Partly Due to Weak Design.......2007-12-29
I bought this screen for Christmas 2007. It arrived in a damaged box, but the product failure was partly due to design. It appears to be packaged halfway well, and might survive the typical rough shipping practices of most carriers. However, the screen is essentially an 8-foot long spindle, supported at both ends in a plastic end cap. While the plastic end cap is probably sufficient for normal use as intended, it is not designed to withstand the rigors of transportation (which I do consider a design flaw). I think there were some styrofoam blocks inside the screen itself, which may have been intended to support the roll during shipping, but they were far to anemic to do the job.
I got replacement end caps, but when I put the thing back together, it didn't work. The catch mechanism did not hold the screen at 5" increments, as it was supposed to (we've probably all seen this in grade school).
The shipper is definitely partly to blame for this failure, because one end of the box was crushed, and there was a gaping hole in the middle, and a mark on the steel screen housing, indicating a heavy impact. The manufacturer is also partly to blame for the failure. They may or may not be to blame for the mechanism not working after I reassembled it, because I may have dislodged something. It appeared to be a very simple assembly, with a cylinder at each end that slips into the roll, so I'm pretty sure it's not something I did.
I plan to hold the screen down with a weight, because I don't want to hassle with getting a different one. When it's down, it does the job.
One final note: The surface is like an eggshell sheen, white painted surface. In a dark room, it is fine at a 15' distance with a 1000-lumen Mitsubishi HC3000U projector set on the low bulb setting. Our room is navy blue (very dark). During the day, it takes some getting used to, and a glass-beaded screen may be needed in light-colored rooms. Other projectors are brighter, and a glass-bead reflective screen may be too much (but the projectors usually have a contrast adjustment so it may not be an issue).
All in all, I think it's a gamble to buy this screen, and I would be reluctant to buy another Elite brand screen, because (IMO) the design is inadequate).
Damaged during shipping.......2007-12-27
Screen is big, bulky and poorly packaged. The first time I received the screen, it was damaged during shipping. The second time, when I received the replacement, it also arrived damaged. This time I opted for a refund. Repacking and handling for return is difficult and annoying. Although the replacement shipment was prompt, the refund was not.

This screen is extremely huge. Nobody believed me at how big it would be until they saw and it is amazing. Only problem is that absolutely no documentation comes with it. It would be nice to have some recommendations for mounting, typical brackets used, etc. I rigged it custom via home depot parts. Also, there should be some tips on closing it, I was to the point of sending it back when I finally figured it out: (Yank down surprisingly hard and fast, then let go to allow close). Now I am very satisfied.

Not A Good Screen........2007-12-14
I bought this screen for a number of reasons.
1 - Because it is much cheaper than the electric version which costs about 4 times more.
2 - It got a good review. and
3 - I was projecting onto a greyish wall and thought a screen would give me a cleaner brighter image while still maintaining good contrast.
I experienced number of problems with this screen:
1 - The packaging is poor. Yes it is held in cardboard box with styrofoam at the ends. But the styrofoam protection was clearly insufficient and was only at the two ends. It had less than one inch from the box. Needless to say the screen got a good shaking up in transit to me and this was evident when i opened the box.
2- I know how to pull out and retract screens. Plus i read the manual carefully and followed the instructions for installation and use. I pulled it out about 80% after installation. When I tried retracting it it never retracted. It just came right out. It never once tried to pull back in. So now it is fully rolled out and is not retracting. I was gentle with it and had followed the retract instructions.
3. It is a step up from using a wall. But the whites are horrid. The overall picture is cleaner but the contrast is not improved infact the blacks are slightly more grey than on the wall cause it is a white screen. The whites sparkle and glisten in a big way. Like there are tiny grains of sand that are reflecting white into all the colors of the rainbow like little diamonds. All the colors except black and white are fine.
I am disappointed with my purchase of this screen. Even if I got a faulty screen The blacks and whites are not properly reproduced. In movies with lots of white like snow scenes the sparkling is very very distracting.

Now, let me just say in response to all who are complaining about not being able to retract the screen... be patient, and read the instructions. These complainers are most likely from those who have never used a projector screen before. It is admittedly tricky at first, but it takes a little practice. It's a bit more complicated than retracting a simple window shade, but it only needs the right technique. Once you got it down you will truly be happy with this screen.
Now on to the quality. It is obviously not the best out there, but comparing it with other screens costing thousands of dollars this particular brand of screens are an absolute bargain. If paired with a nice projector (I personally use the excellent high definition Panasonic AE700) you will get a most pleasant and film-like picture. The mild texture of the screen does add some tiny sparkling hot-spots, but they are so microscopic in comparison to the enormous size of the rest of the screen, and so subtle, you won't ever be distracted by them. Most importantly, the brightness is impressively uniform throughout. The contrast was also quite impressive for a white, non high-contrast screen. For the price, I was expecting a dull, and washed out image, but to my shock, it performed admirably. There is a definite and obvious increase in both light output, detail, and contrast when using this screen in comparison with a plain wall. On drywall the blacks wash out to a very dull gray and much detail is lost. So in that respect, this screen does it's job, and does it well.
The build quality is average, about what you'd expect at this price point. The screen tends to curve at the edges (right where the black border meets the white part of the screen), but at this price, it might not bother most people. And since it only curves at the masked edge, you will not notice any distortion when watching movies. More expensive screens have tension wires connected to the edges to keep the screen perfectly straight by using gravity to keep the screen stretched horizontally. These are commonly found on electric projector screens. Again, at this price point, the judgement call is yours.
Installation takes careful planning, as projector screens can be quite heavy, and this one does have some heft to it. Be sure to buy good strong hardware and appropriate screws and anchors. Keep in mind that when pulling down on the screen, you create more weight load on your wall. I opted to suspend the screen from its end loops, suspended by hooks attached to 'L' brackets on the wall. This is probably the best way to install your screen. I probably wouldn't trust mounting it by the keyholes in the back of the housing. This area does not look very durable to my eyes and it's only made of plastic.
In conclusion I'll be honest and say that when it comes to projector screens, you definitely get what you pay for. But in the case of Elite brand screens, they are much better than most people think and are perfectly adequate for home theater on a budget, and are perfect for those who are just starting on their first front projection home theater. As for the retracting issue, all I can say is be patient. You'll quickly pick up the technique and will be retracting the screen with ease in no time. It's actually quite easy once you get the hang of it.

It broke on the first try.......2007-01-19
The first thing that I heard after hanging this manually operated 100" screen was the sound of breaking plastic followed by the sight of all the screen pouring out of the bottom never to be retracted again. I took the screen down, took the end cap off and found broken plastic parts inside.
After I filled out a long waranty form, Elitescreens promised to send me a new endcap, but it remains to be seen if I will be able to install it myself. I rate this a 2 Stars because it could still have a happy ending.

Good Screen but not portable.......2007-02-16
This screen is not on a tripod like currently advertised but mounted it works great! I got two eye bolts, four S hooks, and some chain and mounted it to my ceiling (rafters) because I did not want it on a wall. Works great and does not sway even with the ceiling fan on. So when I do need it for travel I will need to find a tripod but I have one from an older screen that might work.
The screen is very bright and works well especially for the price. I have to fiddle with it to get the screen to go up but I have that issue with most of them. For 66 bucks I have nothing but great things to say...

Great buy!.......2007-04-16
I am very happy with this product for the money I paid and the result I got in return. I have it installed in my bed room and I project from 12' and it projects to 70" x 40" and talking of high def .. Its just wonderful and you gain 1.1 on your screen.
The only thing which bothered me was the size as (in width); so if you are looking to hook it into the beams for stronger support, beams are usually 12" apart so If you got the hook into one hook, the other hook will be few inches short, lets say 3/4 inches .. I got over it by installing decorative chandelier chains. It actually looks very nice and my wife didn't hate it ..
Bottom line, Its a great buy and I have suggested almost all my friends who owns projectors or thinking of getting one. If I may add, do not forget to get free projector mount when you buy this screen. Customer service was great and they shipped my projector mount even before they received serial number of the projector screen from me as par the promotion advertisement..
Thinking of getting one in this price range -- go for it, two thumbs up ..
