I was a little scared to buy these headphones after reading poor reviews I bought these anyway and they blow my stock ipod ear phones away. I barely have to turn the volume up to get great sound. I might be ordering two more of these one for my brother and an extra for me. Yes the cord can be annoying and makes no sense why sony made one cord longer than the other,but who cares when you get comfortable fit and nice sound. If it wasn't for the cord design these would get 5 stars. These are my first set of in the ear headphones.

I love the sound quality and I used them every day at work for 11-12 hrs this summer - very comfortable. I personally like the long length of the cord when walking around campus, easy to put my mp3 player in my purse or in my coat. Granted I dont know why you would ever need such a short cord.. so the extension is necessary. The silver piece that goes over where the wires connect broke for me.. it doesn't stay in place. If I'm not careful with them I have bare wires showing where they connect - this happened after about two years of heavy use. Over all I'm pretty happy with these headphones.

Sound okay. Assymetrical cord is ridiculous unless you like all the weight on one ear. Cord material is some garbage rubber that tangles up on itself much easier than anything I've used. Rubber disintegrates very quickly from normal perspiration. They're junk, period.

Bought these a few weeks ago... they work great. They are comfortable in your ear. It blocks out a lot of the background noise so you can actually hear the music without having to turn the volume up! The earphones come with one side longer than the other. This is because the longer side is supposed to go BEHIND your neck. It also comes with an extension. Without the extension, it's too short for normal use. However, if you have an ipod shuffle or an armband for your ipod, then it's perfect length. Otherwise, you'll have to use the extension. I just recently brought the Sony MDR-KE30LW and received them today. The product is horrible. It is filmsy like it is made out of some cheap plastic.
The Karabiner is poorly designed, the clip part is a cheap piece of plastic that doesn't clip very well. You can go to a dollar store and buy an actual metal carabiner for $1 and it will perform better. Which is what I ultimately ended up doing.
The pulling mechanism for the earbud is decent. However,the diameter of the product is too big. It is closed to 2 inches wide. It has this white outter rubber material which easily gets dirty. The cord is too short. It only pulls out from the earbud end. I wish it was retracble on both ends.
My general dissapointment with the karabiner and casing should not be confused with the excellent sound quality sony gives us as usual. All in all I think this product was a big dissapointment. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!

Great Headphones.......2007-12-08
These are the best and most comfortable headphones on the market. They block out external sounds when working out at the gym or other areas where you don't want to hear people. The sound is rich - Neither too much or too little base or treble. And if you want more intense sound then just push in the earbuds a little more. I had a prior set of these earphones for about two years but they went dead so I replaced them with a newer version which are just as good.

I've bought these earphones for my Ipod, but was very disappointed with the way they fit. They actually didn't fit me at all. The big loop that goes above my ear, would just hang there without even touching my ear. I was hoping that I could go running with them, and they would be much better than the regular earphones, since these supposedly would stay on my ears without falling out and release the pressure off of my ear canal by hanging over my ears, but that wasn't the case. I wouldn't say that I have small ears, but these are definitely not for every user.
Other than that, they seem to be of a very high quality and sound pretty good. I wish they were adjustable!

A big disappointment.......2007-11-12
I use an mp3 player for exercising at a fitness center, where the ambient noise level is high. Most earbuds that I have tried have had too low a maximum volume. Recently, I have been using a pair of earbuds (supplied with my player) that had good quality sound and higher-than-average volume. However, these advantages were cancelled out by but poor placement in the ear, resulting in serious reduction of volume and degradement of sound quality.
Frustrated, I decided to try to find good in-canal earbuds, settling on the Sony EX81LP earphones. However, I was disappointed upon receiving them to discover that their maximum volume was not nearly as high as that of the earbuds I had been using and that the basses were unusually weak, giving the sound an unattractively brassy quality. I found the over-the-ear frames cumbersome to put on. I also found that they detracted from my ability to keep the buds in the ear canal, since they were inflexible and forced the buds to enter the ear at the wrong angle. As a result, I was unable to keep a tight enough fit to block the ambient noise of the gym. To top it all off, after just two weeks the right earpiece lost most of its volume, rendering the earbuds useless.
(After more research I ordered and received a pair of V-Moda Bass-Freq earbudsV-MODA Bass Freq Earbuds - Bling Bling Black. Finally I had found what I was looking for -- high enough maximum volume for my needs, earbuds that fit neatly in my ear canals and stay there and a really rich sound spectrum, including, as the name implies, a satisfying bass level.)

fits my ear perfectly,, and do not fall of even when I play racquetball. the sound clarity is excellent all by itself but when accompanied by a good music player it would open a completely different world altogether. The sound quality is subpar at best, the volume and clarity of sound is about 50% of those from the original ipod packaging, therefore totally worthless and waste of money. In addition, the wrap around feature is not adjustable and does not conform to the ear, making it very difficult to keep them on unless you sit still...

This was my third pair of Sony earbud style earphones in less than three years and they quit like the two before. After about 9 months, one or both ears just stop working. I had a pair of Sony MDR-EX71 Fontopia Headphones (whithout the over-the-ear thing) and after they quit, out of brand loyalty, I bought another pair. Same thing. This time I bought the MDR-EX81 and they broke a few months ago. I'm generally careful with my things and three times isn't a coincidence, so I must conclude that these earphones suck.

I've been purchasing from amazon for years but this is my first review. After reading all of the other reviews on this product I decided they would be the solution for running w/ my iPod as the stock apple earbuds just fall out. Well, these do not adjust in any way so you'd better hope your ears are the same shape and size as they'd designed these for. they're very uncomfortable and keep slipping.. plus the sound SUCKS. Other reviewers said the bass response was great. Bologna. sounds like crap. You have to shove these way way into your ear canal to get the bass but they don't stay put there and again more discomfort. I hate em. waste of money.

Great sound for the price.......2007-12-21
I am now purchasing my second pair of Sony MDR EX-71s. In between, I bought a pair of JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (Black), but was very unhappy with the poor sound quality, and have come back to Sony. When I bought my first pair of these, I was very irritated by the cord-extension; I judged the short side as too short (only 12 inches from the head) and the fully extended version too long (down to the knees). Only recently, when I bought an around-the-arm ipod carrying strap, did I realize the genius; the short side is the absolute perfect length to attach to your biceps-borne ipod, with no excess cord to get tangled while you work out. The longer version is suitable for waist-carrying or placing it on your lap while sitting. The sound is fantastic for the price (and if you are spending more than $50 for a pair of ipod headphones, you have more money than common sense - Mp3 is a degraded, compressed sound format, so the extra fidelity is wasted money.) My only complaint on these headphones is cable-rot; after 3 years, the sound is still great on my old ones, but the cable has completely frayed and rotted away in spots. If Sony starts using a more durable grade of rubber, they'd have a perfect product.

I have had the same durability problems as some of the other reviewers, but frankly I don't care. I can buy 4 pair of these for the price of the so-called high-end earbuds before I have spent the same amount of money, and if I ever manage to destroy a pair, I'll be ahead.
I tried and returned an expensive pair recently, and the 1-star reviewers are right: The sound response on these $160 headphones just isn't worth the money. It's not 4 times better, it may even actually be worse. I think these Fontopia earphones both perform and wear better than headphones two classes above them.
So I don't care how often they break. I'll just buy another pair. And another. And another. Of course if they made a more durable model for $75 bucks, using the same speakers, I'd buy those in a heartbeat, and so I think would a lot of people.
Nice earbuds - lousy cord.......2007-12-17
These are nice earbuds, comfortable and providing nice sound for the money. My complaints are with the cord. The main cord is too short for almost any use I can imagine. The included extension is long enough to make it a bother.
I also wonder what Sony was thinking in making the left earbud cord so much longer than the right. The loop it makes is long enough that it is easily caught on fingers, branches and in coat zippers.

I have a vocation where, even though I don't want to be a runner, I have to be. Therfore, any distraction from running such as listining to an MP-3 is helpful. Conversely, if the music is coming in and out or the ear buds are bugging me it makes the run even more difficult.
The Sony MDR-E827G ear buds were my third set of buds this year. I purchased them in hopes that they would resist the damage brought on by perspiration (I'm also a beer drinker). What a pleasant surpise. Number one: the cables are thick unlike the hair thin ones that are coming with all the "high-end ear buds," number two: better bass than the ear buds that came with my "Zune." Finally the cables are short so they are not flopping around and driving you crazy by your third mile. The little wind up spool I believe was meant for preserving the cable life but I tossed it. It was annoying and took up space. However, for the money, you cannot beat these buds.

I use these with my laptop, and really like them for their convenience and durability. The wind-up case is a great idea and works really well for protecting the cord.
My only wish is that the cord was a bit longer, but it's probably the perfect length for portable music players.

I was kind of expecting a different look to the earphones when I recieved them.... they appeared that they would fall out easily... Thankfully not the case. Good purchase for the price... and i do sweat pretty heavy in the gym.... Face it though... the perfect earphones (for working out) will never be found under $100.
Good Earbuds for the Portables.......2006-12-29
I bought these earbuds for my CD player (at the time) because the ones I had before died on the right side. They were a pair of RCA behind the neck headphones I bought at Family Dollar for very cheap. I would buy another pair but now I have an iPod and want to buy mostly earbuds and clip headphones that are more portable. I was planning on buying a pair of Philips earbuds at Target because (I thought) these were dead on the right side and I dislike the iPod earbuds, but when I plugged these into my iPod they worked fine. After a break-in session they sound even better.
Well, they are only ten bucks, so what can you expect? Not a ton, not a surround soundstage and great, powerful sound, but maybe something that has at least average sound, are comfortable, and will last a decent amount of time. And thatt's mostly what I got with these earbuds.
They don't have stellar sound (that for some reason a ton of reviews rave about), but they have decent sound that's good enough for the money. Not a lot of bass, but some pairs at this price have barely any bass. The mids on this pair are emphazised (but not by a lot, props to Sony). And they do have a good, clean sound to them, so even if you are unhappy with the low end of these earbuds you at least have a good upper end.
For other aspects of the earbuds, they are very comfortable and fit much better than the Apple earbuds, but feel better with the pads. I have already lost the pads but still fit fine and are still comfortable for long periods of time. Also, these are some durable headphones so far, and after a half-year of use they still put up nicely.
Overall, not a bad pair of esrbuds for portables. Already got a better pair? Keep these for some useful back-ups. They don't have amazing sound, but are comfortable and last long enough to make them worth the price. 4 stars.
NOTE: This is a waterproof version of the MDRE828LP earbuds. These would be a better deal if you are using them mostly outdoors.
