I believe in the title of the Essentials Kit they need to tell the customers that the PDA is NOT INCLUDED. I got the Essentials kit thinking that a pilot was included. When it got here I was shaking and shaking the box, but nothing came out but the kit. I was embarassed and irritated. They need to put it in BIG BOLD PRINT. DOES NOT COME W/ A PDA.

I've had the palm kit for over 2 years and the case is now starting to break on the edges from flipping it open anytime I use it. This is from normal use and not from even flipping the case open and holding it open. It seems the edge of the case is re-enforced with a piece of wire and the leather has worn away on both sides and exposed the wire to the point where it has broken on both sides.
The stylus/pen thing is not very useful and is a bad design. I'm not really sure which function I'll get when I turn and push down the button on top.
As for the screen protectors, I can tend to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to having no bubbles under the clear coat but that wasn't even the thing I was most disappointed with. I was going through a new protector almost every month because it would get more and more difficult to write in the same spot due to the wear on the protector. In the end I bought a Boxwave screen protector and I am much happier. Although the Boxwave screen protector is more expensive then all the other screen protectors, the one protector I have had for a little over a year is still going strong.

I bought this case for my Palm z22 and it doesn't quite fit. The case is a little too big for the Palm and it falls out when turned upside down. I am going to make it work by adding some velcro to the back of the Palm and the inside of the case. Other than the fit (or lack of)this case is well made and a good deal for the price.

Case is handy and holds the Palm fairly well. It could use some kind of top closure or clasp to keep the palm in place. The elastics on the sides hold the unit ok, but it tends to slide upward and needs to be re-adjusted frequently. Leather is good quality and will probably last a long time. Good use of space for accessories.

I've tried several different cases for my Zire 31, but this is the first one that it fits into properly. It's a very good-looking leather case, much more stylish than you might expect for the price, The flap/closure is a bit tight-fitting at first (opening it is quick and easy, but closing it is a little harder), but even in the first week it seems to be getting easier to close as the leather wears in just a bit. I'm very happy with this case and recommend it.

Connectivity and Expansion

I don't often take the time and trouble to review products, but the Palm Zire was so awful that I felt it needed addressing. Sure, it worked okay at first but it used Palm's 2-stroke script which is annoying at best. I never could make a "K" on it which is a real pest because my first dozen entries were family and my family name has a "K" in it.
The reason that this is written in the past tense is that the thing lasted about 1 year before it totally failed to work for no apparent reason. Sitting on my desk it just croaked. My prior PDA at least had an excuse .. I drowned it in a rainstorm. The sole redeeming grace was that i kept the gadget synched. My experience soured me on PDAs and I have done without for a while. And if I do get one, there is no way it is going to be a Palm.

This Palm OS device has almost everything that the more expensive Palm models have, including an MP3 player. I've owned two of them, but recently upgraded to a Palm Tungsten E2 which has a metal case. and stands up better to being kept in the front pocket of my jeans.

As a new doctor all I need is Epocrates and 5MCC. The MP3 player is good also but the battery life is not enough to listen more than a couple of hours. Overall, a great deal.

I had an old Palm m100 for the longest time and used it as an electronic replacement for a paper organizer. But it ate batteries and wasn't rechargeable, so when I got a newer computer without a serial port (and discovered it would cost a fairly decent sum for a serial-USB connector), I decided to upgrade. Thought it'd be cool to have something with mp3 playing capabilities as well, (I don't own an iPod or other small mp3 player) but I didn't need many features beyond an organizer (didn't need for e-mail, etc) and didn't want to spend much over $75.
Pros:
I like the Palm interface, very intuitive.
Calendar & contacts work well
Plays mp3's
Syncs well with Outlook/computer
Plugs in to recharge; all cords came with it.
Easy to download new software (I recommend Blocks, it's similar to Tetris)
Cons or caveats:
Display: when viewing calendar in "full month" mode, I have trouble seeing any entries unless I view the screen at an angle. Not a deal-breaker, but a little odd. They probably improved this with newer (pricier) models, but you get what you pay for. I can read all other screens just fine.
Haven't used it to display photos; I don't think I'd use this to do that--resolution isn't worth the effort.
Expansion card: WARNING: WILL NOT READ ANY CARD OVER 1GB size! (I had purchased a 2GB card with the intent of putting mp3's on it and listening to them on the Zire. Wouldn't read it. Didn't realize this till I read the fine print. Fortunately, I have a camera which takes SD cards so I can use in the camera).
Listening to mp3's: This really isn't gonna replace an iPod for features. They do say that listening to mp3's uses more battery than other functions. I would agree but then I've not used this for long periods of time as an mp3 player, so I can't really say. Functionally, mp3's play just fine with RealOne player. Sound quality is pretty good BUT I have noticed a "hiss" background noise when using earbud-style headphones; it's a lot less noticeable with "outside-the-ear" style headphones. Recommendation: outside-the-ear style headphones with an in-line (cord) volume control. If you're in a quiet environment, the lowest volume level on the RealOne player isn't all that soft. With non-volume-adjustment headphones, the lowest volume level (there's a slider bar on screen) was the loudest I wanted to hear. Headphones with a volume adjustment fixes that problem.
Overall, it's been worth the $$ for me as a replacement for my former m100, and it works ok as an mp3 player, as long as you can recharge it on a regular basis.

Useful but stylus tip breaks easy.......2007-04-02
This multifunction stylus has two major things going for it- it's got the pen on one end, and a reset rod underneath the stylus tip on the other. The reset tool is worth the cost of the stylus, since you won't need to find a paperclip when your media player locks up (usually in the car far away from said paperclip). However, the stylus tip which screws over the reset tool is prone to breaking in half, making the device into a metal-rod tipped stylus, making it useless for the primary purpose of a stylus. I talked to BoxWave, and they said the only solution is to buy more styli from them since they don't have replacement screw-on tips. After going through three in six months, no thanks. I'll use the original plastic stylus and put a paperclip in the case. To get 5 stars, Boxwave, throw in two replacement tips and a replacement ink cartridge for the pen. Otherwise, it's not worth the cost.
