          I bought this machine as a replacement for a HP nx6125 notebook, which I really liked. The former machine was a lean, firm, well constructed machine. This one (6175b) has gone flabby and sloppy.

          The primary defect is the very low quality screen. It can be set very bright, but has extremely poor contrast and color balance. If you turn the brightness up, the backlight bleeds through destroying the shadow areas. If you turn it down till you get decent dark tones, then the whites become a murky gray. And there is a very strong blue tint to the screen that will distort the color of photos, images, and even the UI. Gray menus turn into blue.

          The keyboard is still decent but has also gone softer, as well as the mouse buttons. The USB ports are located at the left and right sides, the power connector is on the left, and the LAN connection is on the back. So if you are right handed, use a mouse, and work plugged into AC and LAN, you have to add several inches desk space to the back and two sides. This notebook eats up a lot of frivolous desk space.

          On the good side, the machine comes with a choice of Vista 32 or 64-bit and media for both, and also XP. Also the 1GB RAM takes up only 1 slot, so you can add another 1GB from a third party.

          The extremely low quality of the screen makes this a very poor machine.
