AKG Closed-Back Foldable DJ Headphones - K81DJ

5 out of 5 stars AKG makes some serious stuff.......2007-09-17

I bought these headphones through recommendation of one of my friend. They are truly amazing..especially for the price they come compared to other expensive competetors....Extremely light weight...3d axis folding system..makes them easy to carry around....The cord length is descent enough.....The only down side i can say for this headphones is the cushion size of the earcups they are a little small to fit properly to my ears and hurt my ears for a while since they were new but after a while i was okay with them...gr8 headphones for portable music players and personal computers.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from AKG.......2007-05-12

I own the AKG K701 headphones and couldn't be happier with their spacious sound and accuracy - but they on the large side, and hardly the product for on-the-go listening. The K81DJ headphones aims to fill the gap for a good-sounding portable.

While you can't beat in-ear monitors for portability, the bass can be bloated (Westone UM2), sound quality lacking, or the cables flaky. For the most part, ear buds lack the kind of sound quality you need for serious music listening. A small headphone would be perfect, but an open-backed model like, say, Sennheiser PX100 is like a sponge for outside noise. A closed headphone is the only solution for many listeners.

The Senn HD25 is said to be the gold standard in portable phones. At less than half the price, the AKG K81DJ blasts open the market. Several positive reviewe on this thread have pointed out their foldable design, attractiveness, and fine sound of the K81DJ - and it's all true. The problem (as you've also probably read) comes with a bass that can be boomy at times if you don't do something about it. And you can.

There's a reason for this sound. Since these are DJ headphones, they're designed to absorb all the excess bass in club situations; but everyday listeners can make them sound great. First, pull out the two-inch polyethylene pads hidden behind the pleather ear pads; they come out like a contact lens.and the sound improvement is immediate. Second (if this is if you're adventurous), pull off the pleather pads, and unscrew the three Philips screws just behind. Now, take some Blue-Tak, and fill in the hard plastic atreas behind the phone. (You can find illustrated instructions online by searching the Head-Fi forums.) The result is a rich, detailed sound certain to surprise any portable headphone listener. No excess bass.

The only remaining issue is their heavy clamping force which, again, is designed to be an asset for deejays in noisy envionments. Leaving them stretched around a six to eight inch globe for a while can alleviate most of the discomfort, but they'll always be an extra-snug fit. Listeners with large heads might best try these out before committing.

Before purchasing the K81DJ, I'd wondered whether these mods would make the phones shine. It worked wonderfully with my 5.5g iPod, and I'm delighted. After years of pickiness, I've finally found my portable "rig" - no more searching for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck, and good warranty service.......2007-05-08

I have had a pair of 81DJs for about a year-and-a-half now. They continue to be my favorite headphones for use with my Creative Zen, and they sound even better plugged into my HeadRoom desktop amp. They have great bass that isn't overwhelming, decent isolation, and pretty good design. The upper treble is slightly rolled off, but that beats a strident or harsh high end.

The cord is the weak link here. It's long (9ft) but flimsy. After about one year, the plug on mine started losing continuity in the left channel. It was clear the wire had broken internally where it connected to the plug. I contacted AKG, who asked me to ship them to their center in California. In a little more than a week, I had a new pair. (They can't replace the cord, it seems.) Great warranty, great customer service.

In sub-$100 sealed headphones, I've got a pair of Sennheiser 280 Pros, too, but I favor these over the 280 Pros for most music. The Senns have better isolation and a better cord, but they're hardly portable, and they're harder to drive (64 ohms) than the 81DJs (32 ohms) with a portable player. The 81DJs have got better sound overall -- things always seem a bit muted in the 280 Pros at the high and low ends, even through the headphone amplifier. (Neither pair is as good as AKG's 701s or 240DFs, though that's a different league.)

I don't think they can be beat by any other sealed design headphones in this price range. A good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Good Headphones for the Price.......2007-05-06

I really love these headphones. I get SO many compliments on them (good conversation starter) and they have great sound quality for the price. The only thing is that they are a bit uncomfortable in long-term situations and they make my ears a bit hot/sweaty, but that's really the only drawback. I left them open around my boots overnight to stretch them out, too, since my head is kind of big for these.
In general, though, these are definitely a good buy. I haven't had any problems yet.

4 out of 5 stars AKG K24P Headphones - Good Bang for your Buck.......2007-09-22

I recently purchased the AKG K24P headphones after my stock Sony Earbuds broke. There are always good and bad things about every product you'll buy - so, you have to weed out all the useless crap you might read that are written by consumers vs. audio equipment professionals.

Musical Preferences: Jazz (vocals and instrumentals), rock, alternative, world, popular, bossa nova, techno, and classical. I'm not into metal or country. I own a nice home stereo system (Aragon power amp, Magus tube pre-amp, California Audio CD Player, Acoustic Energy Speakers).

Product Description: The AKG K24P headphones have semi-open speakers, foldable, and a metal headband. The appearance is on the "cheap" side - made mostly of inexpensive/lightweight plastic. The cord leading to the separate headphones was unusually twisted out-of-the box. The cord does have a 90 degree plug (a plus), but no built in volume control (a negative, because some songs are louder than others). As others have complained - the metal headband is too tight out-of-the box. The headphones hurt my ears after about 5 minutes. No big deal. I just bent the metal headband and they are fine now. The headpones are on-the-ear types. They do not go around the ear like circumaural headphones do. Circumaural headphones and in-the-canal insert-type headphones do a better job of sealing out background noise. The headphones have a sensitivity of 125 db - which basically means they're pretty efficient. In other words, you won't need much power to make the music loud. Works great on my laptop and on my IPOD. On my laptop - I had to turn the volume almost all the way down.

I broke the headphones in for 75 hours using randomly played songs through my IPOD.

Listening Impression: The headphones are fairly neutral. By that I mean that it doesn't appear to favor or emphasize any part of the music per se. For example, my Sony earbuds were very "bright" or "tinny"; which emphasized high pitch notes. I characterize the sound of the Sony earbuds as being very "harsh."

The AKG K24Ps definately have more bass than the Sony earbuds. It was a fairly clean, punchy, but still somewhat lightweight for bass notes. If you're heavy into the beat of the music - you'll probably like other headphones better.

The K24Ps midrange response is very good - so, vocals are really nice to listen to.

Imaging: I have never found headphones that image as well as a good set of speakers. By "imaging", I mean that if you close your eyes and listen to the music - you can tell where individual instruments are playing or where the vocalist is standing. My Acoustic Engergy speakers do an awesome job with this (assuming that the quality of the recording is good). I haven't found a set of headphones that can image well. I believe the reason is because proper "imaging" requires reflections off surfaces in your listening area - and that sounds must arrive at each ear w/ small time delays. I know I'm getting to technical here - so, feel free to skip this part.

Bottom Line: The K24Ps are very good headphones for the money. I paid about $25 including S&H. They definitely outperform my Sony Earbuds. I don't know how durable these headphones are because I've only had them for a month. I give this product 4 stars because they don't sound nearly as good as my Acoustic Energy Speakers. I would characterize the K24Ps as "smooth" and easy to listen to. If you're heavy into bass, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a fairly neutral set of headphones - then look no further.

I wanted to buy this headphones for a while everytime I stopped by jandr store
and finally I bought one
plugged into my pda to play some music, seems it has very good bass effect (I couldn't judge the sound due to excessive noise on the street)
when I listen audio files on the computer (160-192kbps ogg vorbis), I am pretty impressed for the excellent sound
the bass can go to very deep and clean without muffling the entire sound, mid
and high are pretty clear and easily distiguishable every details
the headband is like Koss Potrapro, that you need to extend before putting on
I personally like the sound of the headphones, and also suitable for serious listening
bass lovers will like the clean, resonance-free bass
I give 99/100, no main complain (I just wish it has 6.3mm adaptor and earpads)

5 out of 5 stars Thank amazon customers for the recommendation. 4.5 Stars.......2007-06-18

Because these headphones are quite possibly the best i have ever owned. Not only is the bass unbelievable rich (not just booms that overwhelms the rest of the sound spectrum). These headphones are clear from highs to mids to lows. Now i'm not an audiophile but i've heard things on my 123kbps mp3 files ive never heard from my past headphones (Sennheiser px350, sony, koss, etc.). Get these headphones, you wont be disappointed! Im not giving it 5 stars because these headphones feels a bit flimsy and a bit uncomfortable for jogging, but other than that, theyre great.

5 out of 5 stars AKG K24P.......2007-05-13

Portability, imaging and comfort are stellar on this headphone. I've always been a sennheiser fan and have been looking for the experience that
I had when I first listened to the HD414's. Having recently aquired a reissue of the HD414 I can compare the AKG's and the sennheisers's and
the AKG's win hands down, in particular in the imaging and bass. Sennheiser wins in comfort and timeless design. Highly recommended headphone, for a little over $30.00 (!!!!)

3 out of 5 stars Great Sound; Poor Comfort.......2007-02-09

I purchased these as an upgrade to the ear buds that came with a newly purchased MP3 player. I cannot fault the sonics of these headphones as they are clearly the best inexpensive 'phones that I have ever heard. That is only part of the total picture with headphones; comfort is another very important consideration. That is where these headphones suffer from a poor design. They are uncomfortable to wear for any length of time due to the metal band and the 2 adjusting clips that protude against the wearer's head. If they would re-design the headband and clip assembly, this would be the best inexpensive headphone on the market. As it is now, if you can stand to wear them, they sound awesome. My star rating reflects the comfort of the 'phones not the sonics.

    5 out of 5 stars Good headphones.......2007-02-19

I have owned the HP460's for about eight months now and I really enjoy them for the price. I got them to use on the bus because I couldn't hear anything when I tried listening to my Sennheiser PX100's. They isolate pretty well and the sound is nicely detailed and has a good bass response. When I ordered them I was afraid they would be goofy looking, but I actually was pleasantly surprised how cool they look in person. Unfortunately I now need something with less isolation, so I'm going to have to get rid of my HP460's, but they've been great to me!

    4 out of 5 stars Nice headphones.......2007-01-15

I like the sound, the bass is nice. It's moderate sound enclosure but it depends on the volume you use. The only thing I rather to change is the grip pressure, it could be uncomfortable on the ears after a couple of hours of use like when you see a movie.

2 out of 5 stars Creaky and Underpowered: Just get the K81DJ's Already (OR IEMs).......2007-01-14

While researching this product, a few reviewers recommended it as a less expensive alternative to the segment-leading AKG K81DJ. I like the idea of secret superiority, and for the price, decided it was worth at least a shot.

You might argue that, for the lesser price, less is to be expected, and there is some merit to that. But in this case, the deficiencies were so glaring and so irritating, I consider these cans to be a real value loser.

What are the problems? the HP460 (and the K81DJ for that matter) are closed headphones. This simply means that the outside covering of the actual ear coverings are solid, with no holes. Closed headphones do not let in as much outside noise as open cans, and conversely, do not leak as much of your sound. That is to say, if you are in a library with your closed earphones, it is much less likely that the person sitting next to you will be able to hear what you are listening. Another benefit is that, since less of the outside world can be heard, you can usually keep the volume lower for the same music, and your ears will thank you kindly.

The downside of closed cans is that they can be hard to get right, because that closed backing of the phone can distort the sound. All of the top, top headphones on the market are open-backed. There simply comes a point in quality where closed is too difficult. I also find that closed headphones make my ears warm, and I need to take periodic breaks to air them out.

So when we look at the HP460s, we are looking at them on the metrics of closed cans, which values isolation, and portability, which can include collapsibility, comfort, and intangibles.

Simply put, I found the HP460 to have very poor isolation. I had to manually push them onto my ears to achieve any sort of seal, and consequently, the bass was slim to non-existent. This is obviously not feasible for portable usage (or any usage, for that matter). Furthermore, they were uncomfortable, even for portables. Finally, they creaked incessantly. In open cans this might nearly be tolerated, but in a pair of closed headphones, the effect is amplified. The result is simply unacceptable.

I might have written these issues off as the vagaries of portability, but for the existence of the consensus favorite in this category, the AKG K81DJ. If you know where to look, and who to ask on ebay, you can grab a pair for $55. And even at full retail, these are worth the money. The isolation is excellent (as good as you'll get for the money without an inner-ear canal like a Shure or a Westone), the sound quality is very good, and the comfort isn't bad.

If you insist on trying an alternative to the K81DJ, try the Audio-Technica ATH-SJ5. (You may have to look around.) They're new, and not easily findable, but from the early reviews, they look to be worthy competitors, and I'm quite fond of the Audio-Technica sound, which is fun and musical. But don't buy the HP460s. They are a waste of your money.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't do it!.......2006-11-25

I purchased my first pair of the Hp430 'phones and was at first extremely pleased with the quality and fit, considering the reasonable price. However, this was all until one day, not even 3 months after purchasing the pair, one of the ears randomly stopped producing any sound. Initially, I wasn't too phased and thought it was just my particular pair. I returned them and was able to receive my money back. After not finding another pair that matched the hp430 for fit and comfort (i'm picky), I decided to shell out $40 again to purchase another pair of the hp430 and try it again.

Well, everything was fine until, yet again, after no more than 3 months of purchase one of the ears went bad once again. Because I purchased them at a different store than my first pair, it had been longer than their 30-day-return policy and I was told I had to go through Philips.

I phoned Philips and was told all they could do was have me spend my money on shipping to send out my headphones and they would either attempt to repair them or send me a new pair of the hp430. I insisted I did not want another pair as they are an extremely low quality in my opinion AND experience, but that is all that they can apparently do.

Don't get me wrong, these would be great headphones for the price if they didn't crap out both times i had a pair. Buyer beware.

    5 out of 5 stars Sounds Great.......2006-08-31

I hav a pair of the $10 open air design from Philips that I use with my MP3 player and the sound on those are the best. I decided I wanted to upgrade for my xbox and my home stereo and it had to be the Philips brand. The outside sound isolation is really good almost outperforms my $50 Aiwa noise canceling ones, and the sound quality is way better. The rich deep base, the awesome midrange and high highs is incredible. My only complaint is they are a bit tight on my ears and it gets sore after a few hrs especially with my glasses on. But you shud plug these babies into your MP3 players, you will throw out those crappy ear buds. Im anxious to try them on my plane trip, I have used them in my vehicle I dont hear any road or engine noise just a awesome sounding pair of head phones. They look great and durable too. Buy them.
