It is a full-function organizer that is small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket, and its 2 MB memory is powerful enough to keep up with your busy schedule by organizing all your essential information. Another great idea developed, improved and just when they have it just about right...it goes
6000 has touch screen which works surprisingly well and 2Mb ram which if you use the device for what it was designed should be plenty

4 out of 5 stars I Love My Rex6000 (damn Intel for discontinuing it!).......2002-06-25

Personally, after owning my Rex6000 for nearly a year now, I'd have to say it's the most convenient PDA ever invented. I've owned other PDAs before, but they were too cumbersome and bulky to take along with me anywhere I went.

The larger PDA products don't fit well into a shirt pocket, and you certainly may mess them up if they fall out (due to their weight and size) or get damaged in your pants pocket. Unless I wanted to carry around a briefcase or something else bulky to hold those other PDAs, I wouldn't use it on a regular basis.

I know if I'm wearing casual clothes, I can still slip the Rex6000 into a pocket and always have access to my information. Sure the text is smaller than other PDAs, but at least I can keep the information with me at all times. That alone is worth getting this PDA. Unfortunately, you just can't find them around anymore. Too bad, because Intel could have made some money on this with proper marketing and distribution channels.

4 out of 5 stars Great Engineering, but bad marketing?.......2001-08-28

For me, the REX is the ideal way to walk around with your Outlook Schedule in your pocket (in the smallest package). At the moment I'm writing this, Xircom (an Intel division) announced they will close down REX.net, which is OK with me, since I never wanted to use that feature anyway. Unfortunately, on the REX.net site you can also read that "Intel will no longer produce the REX MicroPDA". Here is another good engineering product that goes down the drain. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this happened to an Intel product I loved. I have owned a REX for the last 7 months, in combination with Microsoft Outlook 2000 and I've been quite satisfied with the power of the PDA, given the size of the package (the size of a PCMCIA card). My REX came with a serial adaptor, which is attached to my desktop machine, but I mostly synchonize it by using my portable PC - all I have to do is to plug the REX directly into the Type II PC Card slot and use the synchonisation software.

Even if there is a whole community of REX users..., apparently Intel/Xircom never succeeded to form *real* partnerships that would support the commercialization of this product, while they were wasting money on internet. I guess that within a few year I will be regarded as a Dinosaur while I will stubornly keep using this product. Maybe I'll have to check whether "web technical support will continue through 2006", as Intel announces. Patrick E.C. Merlevede -- co-author of "7 Steps to Emotional Inetlligence"

4 out of 5 stars Rough edges in firmware, but infintitly convienient.......2001-03-21

I recently got my 6000 with USB port. First thing I want to point out is that I have had none of the problems others are having with the sync software. I use Outlook and it has worked perfectly from the start.

I will complain a little about the firmware. At places, there is some outstanding interface design. Then at other places, it gets darn awkward. The most obvious awkwardness is that you cannot exit or back out from some places via the touch screen, but instead must use the side buttons. If you have the stylus in your hand, this becomes very cumbersome.

I'm hoping these problems are obvious enough to be fixed soon.

Yet, the size and functionality must be weighed highly. A slighly limited PDA that isn't perfect that I'm willing to carry everywhere is much more valuable than a perfect PDA that is too big to easily carry with me (and thus does not get used).

5 out of 5 stars terrific LITTLE pda.......2001-08-23

For the size of this PDA it is jam packed! I have read all of these reviews and decided some of the reviewers did not spent enough time and patience with it. I could tell you what each of their problems were. You must also realize that REX is small. If you cant read small print, you wont like it. I have had my 6000 since its introduction almost a year ago. I was one of the first to get mine. I love it dearly and use it daily. I was a previous REX user and find the 6000 the best! If you have trouble with the software there is a solution, because all the other dedicated REXers have made it work. Also note there ARE "addins" available, just not through the manufacturer. There is a whole world of REXers out there. There are many wonderful REX-writing people who have made everything from scientific calculator to tetris game (solitaire and others of course) to expense manager and even a program to write little REX emails on it! These writer gurus are amazing and most addins are available for free download. For the size of the REX, you get a lot. I can not think of anything more I would want it to do! I certainly did not want to tote the large Palm around. REX is the size of a credit card and does almost as much... I am in the process of finding a second just in case anything ever happens to mine!

4 out of 5 stars Great PDA, inadequate bundled PIM.......2001-06-03

Time magazine's "PDAs on a diet" compared the Vista and Rex PDAs. I read the review and quickly changed from the Vista to the Rex 6000. The Rex was like a breath of fresh air, especially when I had to reschedule alarms. The bundled PIM, unfortunately, is more primitive than the Vista's PIM, since the latter allowed drag-and-drop rescheduling and sorting of memo entries by any displayed categories. Guess I'll have to invest in MS Outlook for a flexible PIM. Thanx.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2001-05-20

It downloads news and other information from the internet.

It has an awesome touchscreen.

Synchronization is fullproof and easy! You can even set it to tell you whenever it's about to overwrite or change something! This eliminates all synch errors. I synch with Outlook 2000, and it did everything to perfection.

This thing can do EVERYTHING my palm can do, but is less cumbersome than the palm.

This is by far, the greatest personal information manager ever.

1 out of 5 stars Incompatibility Problems. Not recommended........2001-04-24

Just got my new Rex 6000 and I'm outraged. As a loyal Rex Pro owner who wanted to upgrade to the touchscreen model, I feel I have been left out high & dry, as will the majority who attempt this transition. The PIM included with the Rex 6000 is not compatible with the Starfish TrueSync software of the older models, which makes very difficult to use existing card files, memos and other data. In essence, you have to start over again and rewrite all your files, unless you want to try a complicated import/export operation through MS Outlook in order to transfer existing data from the TrueSync desktop to the new Rex 6000 desktop and device. But that's not the worse. As it turns out, the PIM included with the Rex 6000 is far more primitive, user unfriendly, unintuitive and complicated than the Starfish. I would never buy it on a stand-alone basis. It's lousy.

This incompatibility took me completely by surprise, as the Rex 6000 literature and advertisements certainly don't go out of the way to warn owners of the older models of the problem. Now that it is too late, and after re-reading the Rex 6000 specs, I can see that mention is made of a PIM included with the Rex 6000 that is different from the TrueSync of the older models. But it is unreasonable to expect people to assume that the software will be totally incompatible. It would be as if a Palm or Visor owner found out after buying the latest model that his existing software, operating system and files do not work with the new model, or could not be easily updated. You expect some continuity in a product line, unless you are clearly warned to the contrary. Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Nice screen, but poor synchronization options.......2001-04-20

I have recently purchased both the 5001 and the 6000 series REX, and found the 5001 to be more flexible in its synching options, and less delicate.

I use my REX primarily as an address book, to do list and notes. Input is not a big issue for me, nor is Web content downloads.

The 5001 uses the Starfish TrueSync technology to synch with any number of devices, including cell phones, Yahoo and Palm Desktop. I actually synch mine with both Palm Desktop and Yahoo simultaneously so that I have access to my addresses over the Internet.

The 6000 does not support TrueSync, limiting my synchronization options to be only Outlook, and the bundled desktop application. The 6000 also seems to be more delicate with both the screen and the buttons.

Bottom line: I just returned my 6000 and am ordering a second 5001.

5 out of 5 stars REX 6000 - Purchased Used.......2003-03-16

The product has a long standing reputation as a quality product. That has not changed. What made this transaction so pleasant was the speed, customer-comes-first attitude, and integrity of the seller. I would purchase from this individual and from this forum again.

5 out of 5 stars best organizer around.......2002-10-31

I've had a palm pilot, a pocket pc, countless other organizers but the only one that i like the best is the rex 6000. I have the model before this, when it was manufactured by franklin. This organizer is tiny, holds a ton of info, and isn't filled with pointless features. I don't like to carry a lot with me, my rex fits right into my business card holder, and into my pocket.

5 out of 5 stars REX 6000.......2002-06-26

I HAVE TRAVELED AROUND THE WORLD WITH MY REX 6000 IN MY POCKET. IF I NEED INFORMATION AT THE AIRPORT I CAN GET WHAT I NEED WITHIN SECONDS ON THE REX 6000. FITS RIGHT IN MY PANTS POCKET FOR ACCESS AND COMFORT. I WOULD NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT MY REX 6000.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OVERALL PDA.......2002-06-22

YOU DO NOT PAY EITHER FOR FEATURES YOU DO NOT NEED NOR FOR FEATURES YOU NEVER USE. JUST THE STRICT NECESSARY. ON THIS BASIS THE SIZE IS PERFECT AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT.

5 out of 5 stars super small size, great utility.......2002-03-09

I was looking for something non bulky and useful to start carrying around a variety of info on phone numbers, addresses and hopefully with alerts for meetings, etc. Nothing fancy, but it had to be small. Heard about the Rex by chance and i have been very happy with it - over 5 months of use with no problems to speak of. I enter everything on my laptop Outlook and sync up with the Rex - direct into PCMCIA port - no additional adapters or cords to carry around. Very useful, with great support from users on the www.
