PalmOne III Handheld

Product Description

You've seen them all around you. The Palm III from 3Com is the organizer that's the size of a deck of cards and small enough to fit into your shirt pocket. Stop struggling to find your datebook each time you need to note an important meeting. With a Palm III you'll have already entered that meeting information and be ready for more. And its 'datebook' has a built-in alarm to remind you of that meeting, so you can focus your attention on the more important matters at hand. The Palm III stores thousands of addresses, to do's, schedules, and personal notes. It stores thousands more items than the Pilot Professional. And the Palm III supports email with its optional Pilot modem, as well as infrared wireless data communication. Imagine keeping up with your e-mail by carrying something the size of a deck of cards! You can keep up with your life without having to carrying a fifty-pound day planner. Unlike most personal organizers, the Palm III comes with a cradle that allows you to seamlessly synchronize your data between the Palm III and your PC. So you can update your PIM software on your PC -push a button- and you and your Palm III are ready to go. Entering information on the road is simple. Write in the information with the stylus on Palm III's award winning Graffiti software or use the on-screen keyboard. One of the disadvantages of earlier PDA's was that you spend weeks entering data, then the batteries fail and you lose everything. By synchronizing the Palm III with your desktop you create a permanent backup. So, no matter what happens to the PDA, your information is always safe. The Palm III has a backlit screen, so you can read and enter information anywhere- in a dark car, a conference room or a restaurant. When you discover how incredibly useful the Palm III is, you consult it frequently.

The tapered design, expanded memory, infrared transceiver for communicating with other PDAs, and flip-top cover make 3Com's Palm III even more of a dream electronic organizer for closet Star Fleet officers and harried professionals. With 2 MB of storage, the wallet-sized Palm III holds 6,000 addresses, 3,000 appointments, 1,500 to-do items, 1,500 memos, and 200 e-mail messages. The installed Graffiti Power Writing software allows you to write on the Palm III using Graffiti's shorthand alphabet. Users can also tap out letters on an on-screen keyboard using a heavy-duty stylus, which is included. Navigation through the core information management applications--memo pad, to-do list, address book, and calendar--is accomplished with six push buttons or by tapping the stylus on the backlit display. Palm OS 3.0 includes more fonts than earlier versions and facilitates drag-and-drop linking to Microsoft Word or Excel. The CD-ROM that comes with the Palm III provides all the necessary software to manage tasks on your desktop, too.

The Palm III is PC and Mac compatible (an inexpensive MacPac connection kit is required for Mac users), and, as with the PalmPilot Professional, the Palm III uses the critically acclaimed HotSync technology to exchange data with your desktop PC. The Palm III is packaged with batteries, several useful manuals, an adapter, connection cables, and the HotSync docking cradle. The Palm III has garnered a number of awards, including an MVP and 5-star rating from PC Computing, a four-star rating from Macworld, a Best of 1997 mention from PC Magazine, a Best of Byte from Byte magazine, and a stellar rating from Windows Sources. --Patrick O'Kelley

4 out of 5 stars Does the basics.......2005-04-19

I just ordered a Palm III online a few weeks ago, and so far I like it. It's easy to use, I entered information in the address and date book field immediately and have been expanding to the memo pad and to do list. A few things I don't like, the alarm isn't much of an alarm. It makes a very faint noise once at the time you set it for and if you don't hear it then you're just kinda out of luck, but as soon as you turn your palm on again, that note shows up with the alarm time and date and description. Also, I got a cord with mine, not a cradle, and it won't connect to my computer (I guess the connecting cable is too old for my 2004 laptop?) and I can't find an adapter, so I haven't been able to connect it to the computer or download anything, which sucks for me, but I don't know if that's a common problem or not. I also got a CD with it which I installed, but without a connection it doesn't help much, but atleast the Palm is user-friendly enough that I could figure out the basics without the CD. For the price they're going now, anywhere from $20 used, I definitely think it's a good deal for your money, good means of organization for someone with a busy schedule who needs addresses and dates at their fingertips. I have it in a case and it fits in my purse fine, not too big or bulky.

4 out of 5 stars The Best For Beginners.......2003-10-08

I have been having my PALM II for more or less 1 year and am very happy with it. The handling of directions, appointments, alarms, to-do's, cocktails, even TV-shows is excellent.
The memory capacity is something limiting when you begin to use 3rd-apps (Irda Remote Control emulation, DocuemntsToGo,etc). The back-light is very shining, and its consumption of batteries (alkalines) is fair (1 pair every month).
I bought this one from a friend that boght it from another friend. i'm the 3d owner, but even so, keeps totally useful, no scratchs and good-looking.
It's some heavy and big (it's not a ZIRE!) but for the beginner that wants to wipe out all the papers and the phone book, it's perfect!
A point important to consider is the size of the screen, in my opnion, is a bit greater than the rest, so the fonts appear more clear and you read them easier.
And finally, the price: It's an old model (it's a Classic!) therefore if you can get one of this, just do it!, it's very cheap for their services.
Come to the Palm world = )

4 out of 5 stars a good companion.......2002-08-25

its lightweight property makes it easy to carry even on field assignments requiring mountain trekking. That is why, palm 3 is a good companion.

its sturdy make, affords it to be carried almost in all situations. Easy to access applications further make it more reliable like a good companion.

above all, it is affordable.

2 out of 5 stars No wonder they dont make these anymore.......2002-01-31

Palm III has been surpassed by the IIIx, the V, and the new VII. Maybe these newer models will give users a better reason to buy.

Green screen makes it difficult to read and its stodgy design is outdated.

Palm III has a rudimentary database (i.e., Phone Book), it is not completely customizable by the user to have its own fields and data types. They do not offer any extended
memory in the 8 Meg range or above, why. I found technical support lacking is support of my question keeping me on line for extensive periods of time.

Save your money for a better product.

5 out of 5 stars good product.......2001-08-04

I have had the palm 3 for about 3 years. Its great and keeps me where I want to be. I am not interested in the email and other features of more sophisticated palms.... just the basics.

4 out of 5 stars Very usable eBook machine--try to pay no more than about $50.......2007-10-17

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RGYM9LVM11QAW I've found the Palm III xe to be a very usable device. While it's outdated technology, it works well as an eBook reader, gets great battery life, and its reflective display works well in outdoor situations as well as wherever there's adequate light.

5 out of 5 stars Five years!.......2005-09-17

This was my first and only PDA for five years. It served me long and well, without once failing. If you are looking for a basic, reliable, PDA this provides excellent value for the money. To protect it, it is essential to get a good protective case (I used a Rhinoskin), and to have screen protectors (I used WriteRight from Fellowes) at all times. Note that you have to keep it supplied with AAA batteries (always keep a spare pair handy), but unlike my friends who bought a rechargeable PDA whose battery finally died after 2-3 years, this one kept on going.

It is still functioning. I retired it in favor of a Tungsten E2.

4 out of 5 stars Good product but obsolete.......2007-12-10

I have a couple of these. It makes it easy to sync between multiple computers.

Unfortunately, I now need to upgrade my conduit software to get it to work with MS Office 2003. The cost of the software is more than I paid for my last PALM III. I'm not one to pay for something twice, so I'll be tossing this PDA out or giving it away.

If you are thinking about getting one of these, my advice is don't unless you are running legacy software and plan not to upgrade.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what we wanted.......2007-09-07

I wanted a cradle for an old Palm III. Palm does not carry this nor does anyone else. Then I found it here. Exactly what I wanted. Exactly what I expected. Exactly what I got. The cradle was inexpensive and works perfectly.

Amazon.com Review

It's always a wonderful feeling when gadgets work seamlessly and live up to their plug-and-play promise. The Palm portable keyboard is such a gadget. It's possibly the best hardware add-on for Palm devices currently on the market--it installs easily and helps you increase your Palm productivity.

Installation of the Keyboard application onto the Palm handheld is easily accomplished during a typical HotSync. (To prepare the app for HotSync, simply add it to the Install Tool on Windows, or the Install Handheld Files in the Mac HotSync Manager.)

Once the app was installed, we were ready for testing at a meeting. We sauntered in and unfolded the keyboard in a flourish--clicking it open from its folded position, laying it flat, sliding the keyboard parts together (it's broken into thirds for folding), and attaching our m100 in a matter of seconds. The attendees at the meeting were suitably wide eyed and impressed with our James Bondian device. (This model of the Palm Portable Keyboard also accommodates Palm VII and Palm III series handhelds--even the Palm IIIc. A separate model is available for the Palm V.)

But the Palm portable keyboard is more than a flashy toy--it's a productivity juggernaut that has some of the best keyboard action we've ever experienced. The keys are not soft and mushy like other keyboards we've tested for handhelds. Instead, they're a bit on the tight side but with a lot of give. Also, the more we used the keyboard, the more we found ourselves shying away from tapping the screen to navigate through a screen or perform actions such as switching applications or opening up the Details section of a Memo or Address Book contact. With the Palm keyboard, you can do virtually all your work without taking your fingers off the keyboard.

The keyboard includes custom buttons for the built-in Palm applications (Date Book, Address, To Do List, and Memo Pad). Several keys have added functions, such as the ability to open up the Apps screen, scroll through a screen, or turn on the backlight. You can also customize your own shortcuts list of applications loaded onto your Palm handheld. This is done using the Keyboard app, and you can assign the number keys 1 through 9 (but not 0). After making our designations, pressing Cmd-1 immediately took us to our favorite diversion--YahtC--during a lull in our meeting.

All told, we have nothing but praise for the Palm portable keyboard, not just for the ease of inputting text but also for changing the way we use our Palm handheld. Since we started using the keyboard, we now often travel without any laptop, confident that any degree of writing or note taking during meetings can be handled by our Palm alone. (It should also be noted that we typed this review on our m100 while sitting comfortably at our local coffee shop.) If you are a heavy Palm user, the Palm portable keyboard is an essential and very cool tool. --Agen G.N. Schmitz
