Palm Z22 Handheld

Product Description

Meet the Palm Z22 organizer. Yes, a handheld organizer sounds serious. But it's actually a lot of fun. In fact, you can get started in just a few simple steps. Pick it up. It's small and light. Turn it on. There's a bright color screen. Check it out. You can store appointments, phone numbers, to-do lists, and photos. The Palm Z22 organizer holds life's details and lets you find it all fast. Take it wherever life takes you, then get home and save everything to your computer with one tap (when used with included synchronization software). It was designed by the makers of the original Palm Pilot specifically for people who haven't seen what a handheld organizer can do. Everything is super simple. A touch of a button brings up your appointments, addresses, and more. The Palm Z22 organizer even comes with an easy three-step set-up poster to get you up and running. You'll notice that the Z22 has a bright color screen. Names and addresses are easy to read, appointments can be color-coded, and photos (yes, you can even carry your photos!) come to life. The main thing, though, is organization. You can carry years of appointments, thousands of addresses, hundreds of photos, your to-do lists, a note pad in a pocket-size unit that weighs about 3 ounces. Once you put information into the Palm Z22 organizer, you can rest assured it'll stay there. Even if you forget to recharge and the power runs out. What's more, you can save everything to your computer. Compatible with thousands of optional Palm application software that can be preloaded in your PC and synched to your Z22

Amazon.com Product Description

If you're still using a paper planner, maybe it's time to catch up with technology and upgrade to the affordable and easy-to-use Palm Z22 handheld. It enables you to keep your entire day-to-day schedule and contact information at hand and in your pocket--no more flipping through multiple pages, looking for scraps of paper or keeping track of to-do lists. And you won't have to enter the same thing twice--once on the computer and once in your planner, as you can easily make updates on your computer and synchronize data to the Palm Z22 in just a minute or two.

This handheld features a 32 MB of flash memory (20 MB accessible for file and software storage), Palm OS 5.4 (Garnet), a fast 200 MHz ARM-based processor, and an internal rechargeable battery (that can be charged via the included AC adapter or via the USB cable connected to your PC).

Weighing just over 3 ounces and about the same size as a deck of playing cards, the Palm Z22 is compact and stylish with a white front and translucent blue backing. Small enough to fit into any purse, backpack or back pocket, it boasts a bright, 160 x 160-pixel color touchscreen display, which provides easy readability of names, addresses, and appointments. You can even color-code appointments for improved organization, and view and carry pictures of friends and family wherever you go.

Operating System and Software
The installed Palm OS 5.4 uses the intuitive and easy-to-learn Graffiti 2 writing software to input data into the handheld (as well as an on-screen keyboard). Windows users can synchronize their calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm OS features the following organizer applications:

It also includes AddIt, a program that includes a variety of applications such as CheckSplit, Chess, Carb Counter and Solitaire. The bonus software CD-ROM has an eBook reader with three books and a dictionary, the powerOne Calculator (perfect for basic and advanced mathematics), and SplashShopper (a helpful shopping list application).

Compatibility
The Palm Z22 is compatible with PCs running Windows Windows 2000 (SP4) and XP (Outlook synchronization requires MS Outlook 2000, 2002, or 2003; sold separately), and with Macs running Mac OS 10.2.8 to 10.4.

What's in the Box
Palm Z22 handheld, USB sync cable, power adapter, 3-step setup poster, Graffiti 2 sticker, Software Install CD-ROM with Palm Desktop, Tutorial, Getting Started Guide, User Guide, and bonus software.

3 out of 5 stars Palm Pilot.......2007-12-31

The charger for the Palm Pilot is defective. The company helped to determine the problem and to resolve the problem

3 out of 5 stars Ok for someone looking to try palm devices.......2007-12-31

The Palm Z22 is ok for very basic compact usage. It has the small compact design of the B&W Sony Clie.

The downside comes from using a model such as the Tungsten E. When you compare the screen quality, the Z22 is totally downgraded. The screen is small and the pixels are sort of distorted. The device chasis feels inexpensive.

5 out of 5 stars Getting the Right Tool is Half the Battle.......2007-12-29

I have struggled to organize my life for years, and discovered last week that I just didn't have the right tool. I got the Palm Z22 to "try out" a pda without spending too much money. I'm already hooked, and am eager to be able to upgrade to a handheld with more memory and more features.

This handheld is a great starter pda. It has enough memory for basic organizer tasks. I have the calendar, task list, contacts, shopping list, memo and note pad features that came with it. I love being able to sync with my Outlook calendar on my desktop. The alarms on it are pretty hard to hear unless you keep the pda close to you, which I do. However they do continue to go off until you turn them off, so I have found them helpful for remembering tasks and appointments in advance, but not so much for alerting me of impending appointments. I added NIV Bible software to it, but found it sucked up too much memory, so I've removed it for a while. I did add Documents to Go and the Diet and Exercise Assistant which I love, and which don't use so much memory. For what I need right now--just a basic organizer--this one is great.

It doesn't come with an MP3 player, but I already have one of those. The Z22 is limited on the game software it will play, but again, that's not what I got it for, and I've decided that having games my be counter-productive. I don't think I'd load it down with too many photos, but it can handle some current ones that I want to show off. All of the software is easy to manage.

I have had a little trouble syncing it to my computer, but the Palm support site had great troubleshooting steps, and I was able to get it working even more easily than they indicated I would. (Evidently there were some conflicts with the Media Center edition of Windows XP, but I've been able to quickly work around them.) I love the Grafitti feature that lets you write directly to the pda instead of using a keyboard. It was a little hard to get used to the specific ways and locations that letters and characters had to be written at first, but I adjusted my writing pretty quickly.

I would recommend this to someone just starting to use a pda, or someone eager to replace their paper daytimer, or someone like me who loses all those little pieces of paper with notes to self written on them. This is a great alternative!

5 out of 5 stars gadget geek.......2007-12-29

I bought this to read e-books on so that i could read without bothering my husband and loved it but the screen is just too small for that purpose but i decided to get the palm tx due too it having a much larger screen but i really thought this was cool and still have it and really don't want to part with it.

4 out of 5 stars Palm Review.......2007-12-28

Using the stylus to write is a little difficult until you get used to the format. Battery life is great and entering information is a snap. The menus are easy to understand and setup out of the box is super easy. Wife loves the product.

4 out of 5 stars PalmOne 3208WW Tungsten E and Zire Essentials Kit .......2007-10-27

Excellent product in mint condition and accessories very helpful. I love this product and I can use it with a bluetooth as well, my next purchase. Received very quickly, within 3-4 days!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Accessories........2007-07-18

The case fits my organizer very well. It doesn't make it any bulkier either. Nice case.

2 out of 5 stars They need to tell people........2007-05-12

I believe in the title of the Essentials Kit they need to tell the customers that the PDA is NOT INCLUDED. I got the Essentials kit thinking that a pilot was included. When it got here I was shaking and shaking the box, but nothing came out but the kit. I was embarassed and irritated. They need to put it in BIG BOLD PRINT. DOES NOT COME W/ A PDA.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price.......2007-02-16

Has all the essentials. Not much use for the pen/stylus. Wish it had replacement styluses (or is it styli).

2 out of 5 stars Better off buying the items seperately.......2007-01-13

I've had the palm kit for over 2 years and the case is now starting to break on the edges from flipping it open anytime I use it. This is from normal use and not from even flipping the case open and holding it open. It seems the edge of the case is re-enforced with a piece of wire and the leather has worn away on both sides and exposed the wire to the point where it has broken on both sides.

The stylus/pen thing is not very useful and is a bad design. I'm not really sure which function I'll get when I turn and push down the button on top.

As for the screen protectors, I can tend to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to having no bubbles under the clear coat but that wasn't even the thing I was most disappointed with. I was going through a new protector almost every month because it would get more and more difficult to write in the same spot due to the wear on the protector. In the end I bought a Boxwave screen protector and I am much happier. Although the Boxwave screen protector is more expensive then all the other screen protectors, the one protector I have had for a little over a year is still going strong.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT TOOL!.......2007-10-19

I love my Zire72! It is wonderful to have games, books, calendar, address book, music and note pad all in one! The freedom to be able to have all my information in a compact easy to use easy to carry place is well worth every penny. Easy Hotsinc makes it enjoyable to use.

5 out of 5 stars Great pda for great price and service.......2007-10-17

This is a great product I bought for my sister and she cherish every moment of it.
I do not know what else to say, because the service and the ethicacy of the service is so great that I am speechless.
My sister is using it all the time and I am happy for her and Amazon along with the renew electronics for making it possible.
thank you again

5 out of 5 stars I love the Zire..........2007-03-08

When my Zire 72 recently suffered a screen malfunction, I started shopping for a newer model -- I thought I'd find an updated Palm with more bells & whistles. To my surprise, none of the new models have the video and camera that the Zire has. I suppose it's Palm's way of pushing you towards buying a Treo -- but I don't like the phone/Palm combo, so I went for another Zire. I have to admit I paid more for this one because it's silver and soooooo pretty -- much nicer than the standard blue I had before -- but I'll just count that as the cost of being a girl. :o)

3 out of 5 stars Good product but.............2007-01-21

Good Product but i had never understud the software. I sold it and purchase an IPAQ 2700 series with wifi. Windows CE. (another thing)....

5 out of 5 stars The do almost everything PDA.......2006-12-27

I've had my Zire 72 for around a year and half and I love it. It does about anything I need in a PDA. I looked at others and found they lack some feature that the Zire 72 has like a built in speaker, camera or voice recorder.
The Good:
- Documents to Go: love this, I have read long docs on the plane when I had nothing else to do (while listening to music on the MP3 player)
- Voice Recorder: missing in many PDAs, Handy when driving and you need to take a note
- Built in speaker: Not great, but beats having to plug in earphones to hear your voice memos or check audio
- MP3 player: I use it for music and audio books
- Video Media player: I work in video production and have demo reel on my palm now. How cool is that!
- Camera: Ok, not great quality, but has been good for documenting things and location scouts
- Great color screen: I had a mono Palm VII before
- SD slot: Great for storing tons of MP3 files

The bad:
- Can't replace battery yourself: The one thing I hate about this little gem. I'll look into self fixes on-line
- No Wi-fi built in: but you can add it with a SD card.

I've added a keyboard and have written scripts and artilces with my Zire.

Connectivity and Expansion
With the built-in wireless Bluetooth connectivity, you can synchronize the Zire 72 with Bluetooth-enabled computer from across the room (within a range of 10 meters, or approximately 30 feet). But that's just the start. Using a compatible Bluetooth-enabled phone, you can send and receive email and connect to the web, send multimedia (MMS) or text (SMS) messages, and even automatically dial any number in your handheld's Contact's application. You can also synchronize data the "old-fashioned" way via the mini-USB connection at the base of the handheld.

The Zire 72 uses Multimedia Card and Secure Digital expansion cards, which instantly add software applications, additional memory, large databases, and more without taking up built-in memory space.

VersaMail software enables you to access and manage your personal and corporate emai1 while on the go.

Operating System and Software
The Zire 72 is powered by Palm OS 5.2.8, which provides higher performance, enhanced multimedia features, support for Bluetooth connectivity and networking, and enterprise-class security. It useses the intuitive and easy-to-learn Graffiti 2 writing software to input data into the handheld (as well as an on-screen keyboard). Windows users can synchronize calendar, contacts, tasks and notes with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm OS features the following organizer applications:

  • Contacts: Lets you store several addresses for each contact, and it adds new contact fields for more phone numbers, multiple email addresses, instant messenger IDs, and a website for your contacts.
  • Calendar: Use the new Agenda view to see upcoming calendar events, tasks due and important email, and color-code your events to provide an easy way to reference your Calendar in the
  • Agenda, Day, Week, and Month views. Take more notes, or synchronize more details from your desktop, into the larger Memos and Notes fields on the handheld.
Tasks: Use tasks with alarms and repeating tasks to set reminders for important commients.

Graffiti 2 allows you to enter data quickly into your Palm handheld but it's even more intuitive and easier to learn

Along with the standard Palm software, you'll receive a Software Essentials CD-ROM containing PalmOne's VersaMail, Web Pro, Messages (SMS/MMS), Palm Reader, Documents To Go Standard Edition, Acrobat Reader, Solitaire, powerOne Personal Calculator, and Audible Player for palmOne handhelds (Windows only).

its was a very good agenda to me until one day.... i drop it..
i used with a aluminium case and i have been drop it many times until from my legs drop it and the screen become blank, i heard this is the problem but overall its very good agenda, used about one year.. if i got to buy another i will do it.. but i think to buy the treo 650, its the one i need for now....

4 out of 5 stars Great - if you use an expandable memory card.......2006-12-10

I have both the Palm Tungsten E and the Zire 72. I've owned both for over 2 years and honestly haven't had a problem aside from losing data. This happens when the battery dies completely (I'm terrible at recharging electronics). However, I must say the voice recorder and digital camera on the Zire 72 have been lifesavers in certain situations! I have been able to take clear voice records of lectures within large classrooms.
At the time I purchased the Zire 72, it came with a free expansion card (mail-in offer). When the card didn't arrive, the girl at their customer service number was very helpful and friendly. I will definitely continue to buy Palm products in the future.

4 out of 5 stars great medium-level palm.......2006-07-15

got the zire 72 ~2 years ago, replaced with t/x 12/05 (see my review on it). thought i should still write a review because i thought it was a great palm overall.

pros: very quick, quicker than the t/x and locks up less; also very important for music lovers: you can lay the palm flat and actually hear the music fairly well with its speaker (volume overall much louder with 72 than t/x; and when flat, can barely hear stuff on t/x). similarly, if you connect it via the headphone jack to your car stereo, it produces a much louder sound (important to minimize static noise if using a cassette adapter); has a voice recorder!; has a decent camera as a backup in case you need a pic and no real camera around

cons: comes with only 32 mb internal memory but can use an external card; blue "paint" will flake off...i just peeled all mine off so it had a nice silver look but then they came out with the zire 72s which is basically the same thing!; some of them will start making the high-pitched buzzing noise when on...mine started doing that after i had it for a year or so; screen size is the usual size, not bigger like the t/x

all in all i think a great palm, definitely get it and not the t/x if you plan on using it more for music than other productivity stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Palm sized power.......2006-07-15

I had a Palm III followed by a Palm V and I was pretty pleased with both these older model PDAs. After some study, I opted for a Palm Zire 72 and I am very pleased with the features.

Important to me, the Zire 72 has Palm's suite of information management applications and the ability to edit Word- and Excel-compatible files and synchronize with Microsoft Outlook (Windows only). This is one reason I got the Palm; my Blackberry is not good as a PDA and I love the easy-to-use and fast PalmOS.

The Zire 72 features:

1-megapixel image resolution (1280 x 960 pixels
32 MB of memory --64 MB in the special edition
Video capture with sound
Digital
Voice recording capability.
Wireless Bluetooth connectivity to connect to the PC or your Bluetooth-enabled phone
4.8 ounces wieght
Palm OS 5.2.8 Operating System
Software
USB cable for linking to PC
Slot for SDI memory card
16-bit 320x320 TFT screen capable of 65,000 colors.

Capabilities Rundown:

PIM and software:
Zire 72 features Palm's suite of information management applications for expenses and note, and it has the ability to edit Word- and Excel-compatible files and synchronize with Microsoft Outlook in Windows. Our own company email system will support the Palm and Pocket PC while it will not be supporting the Blackberry Enterprise System anytime soon. So the Outlook support is very important.

Bluetooth:
The Bluetooth seems designed for devices to enable mobiles, LAN and PC connections to give web capability. It would be clunky, in my view, to connect via a cell phone, so I'd love to see WiFi. But this feature can be added with a $99 card put into the SDI slot. Bluetooth is not as easy to configure; the set-up wizard seemed to be a bit difficult and there are only a few cell phone models included in the preset configurations. If you can get the 72 connected, you can use it to dial numbers, send SMS, MMS and e-mail, and browse the web using the Web Pro 3.5. Or you can opt for a WiFi card and surf at MacDonalds and Starbucks. Phones that are listed:

Sony-E T68i

Sony-E T610

Nokia 6310i

Nokia 3650

Siemens S56

Not a super list.

For PC interfacing or Palm-to-Palm there still is an infrared port.

Egonomics:
Complaints were made about the blue paint on the regular edition flaking off. There is available a special edition with the silver body that seems to be less prone to this complaint.

The control is a rectangular navigating button. The screen has the familiar Palm division between screen and stylus pad below. The Graffiti 2 was easy to use--the letters are almost exactly like written print, as long as you know where to begin the the letter, but that's practically intuitive. The sensitivity and accuracy of the stylus-pointing is a huge improvement over the very early Palms like the PalmV.

My system came with a Cordura nylon case, very nice quality and a huge improvement from the old flimsy leatherette flaps of early days. Without a case, you have to get something to cover the screen. The stylus is the same type of rod that attaches to the side by sliding into a slot.

MP3:
You need a SDI card (Secure Digital card) to load MP3 songs with RealPlayer onto the system for playing back with MP3. These are not hard to find, you may even have one floating around the house (we did.) Drag-and-drop songs onto the card on your PC, put card in Palm and go. There is a headphone jack.

There are "speakers" (tiny) and a voice recorder. Great for memos.

Camera:
The 1.2 megapixel camera has onboard adjustments for contrast and light (I needed to take down the exposure for a shot of my deck at dawn.) Digital zoom. No cover for the camera lens. The resolution was ok. The memory will hold about 85 shots, and you can move them to the SDI (optional) card. No flash.

Software:
The installation CD comes with Adobe Acrobat Reader for Palm, plus a calculator, a reader-- Documents To Go which allows you to read Microsoft Word and Excel. It's recommended to download AvantGo to add internet features. Sites such as www.palmsource.com, www.freewarepalm.com, www.palmgear.com, www.download.com have many free or inexpensive applications for the PalmOS.

There is no manual, it's on the CD.

Summary:
For a PDA, this is about perfect. To be perfect, they'd have to include WiFi and or a better phone setup list for the Bluetooth. I am quite thrilled with the Zire 72--it does what I want it to do, mainly be a PDA and keep my appointments and handle some data. The camera and MP3 are nice for travel.

1 out of 5 stars Problems from the beginning.......2006-06-08

I bought this device because I loved that I could use it for both work and personal fun. I bought it in September 2004, and by January 2005, I'd returned it because the blue paint was peeling off. PALM was pretty awful to deal with. It was returned to me in April or May. When they did return the device, it would not sync properly. I called PALM and they gave me the run around, telling me it was my PCs problem, my company's problem, etc. They wouldn't take it back. Then the warranty expired and they wouldn't take it back, and quite frankly I was exhausted by the whole thing and stopped using it for a couple of months. Finally, in January 2006 I decided just to use it for its organizational tasks and forget the syncking. Now, June 7, that just broke and I am throwing it away.

1 out of 5 stars Take reviewers' advice!.......2007-04-16

Amazon reviewers told me to avoid this item. I purchased one anyway because I had lost one that had worked. This NEW one had to be returned immediately because it didn't work at all! Buy a Zire 22 instead. It works well!

1 out of 5 stars Design Flaw.......2006-07-27

I received this as a gift over one year ago. I did not put it to use at that time because the screen is hard to read... and my Palm XIIIE was working perfectly. Recently, I bought a new computer which did not have a LPT ports so I decided to use the Zire which synchronizes via USB. The big problem is that it is uncompatible with my cell phone. If my cell phone rings all data in the handheld is lost. According to Palm Support they should not be close to each other, not easy being a female who carries both products in the same bag. I never had a problem like that with my previous Palm.
Do not buy this product if you planning to have a cell phone nearby.

5 out of 5 stars Very good value for its price.......2006-03-18

Best feature is the Note Pad application, you can scribble on it just like writing on a post-it note and can save it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the Price.......2006-03-15

The Pros
Low Price
Small & Light
Palm OS 5
8 MB of Memory

The Cons
No Backlight
Black & White Screen
No Replaceable Battery (Common on Palm brand PDAs)
No SD card slot

I bought my Zire 21 about seven months ago, and have had no problems with it, unlike some other people have reported. I read on another review that they think that some of the Zire 21s are randomly resetting because the palm is not shielded enough , and when it is placed by some cell phones it causes the palm to reset. Palm, Inc. is not required to replace the PDA, so they just recommend keeping the PDA three feet away from cell phones. I have never read anything offical that says this, just another person's online review. I have no problem with this because I don't have a cell phone.

Anyway, this palm is great for what I use it for, it does all the basic PDA functions (calender, address, etc.), it has enough memory for all my scriptures, and a few other books. I also have room for other aplications, and games (But is is cutting it close on space with all that), and they run fine on the Zire 21 because of the 126 MHz processor. It also runs Palm OS 5.2.1, and comes with more software on the CD-Rom.

My only problems with this palm is that it doesn't allow you to replace the battery when it won't recharge anymore. This is a problem with many Palm PDAs, and something that I would like then to change, also they could improve battery life in some of their other PDAs. There is no backlight behind the B&W screen, so you can't see the screen at night. And there is no SD card slot, so I can't add more memory space if I ever need to.

So if you don't want to spend alot for a PDA, just want the basics, and you don't mind a black and white screen, I suggest this one.

PalmOne Zire Handheld

Product Description

The Palm Zire handheld is designed from the ground up for everyday personal use. On the move, at school or at work, it makes the dream of paperless life a reality. Feel like you don't have enough time to catch up with everything? The chances are you're not in control of your schedule. Unlike a paper organizer, the Zire handheld gives you the whole picture: appointments and people, tasks and notes, and ties them all together. Nothing could be more natural than entering information into the Zire handheld. Unlike a PC, which forces you to use a keyboard, or a mobile phone, which demands dexterous thumbs, the Zire handheld is much more civilized. If you know how to write in capital letters, you know how to use the Zire handheld. In just a few minutes, you will have mastered Graffiti, Palm's unique - and very intuitive - handwriting language. How easy is it? Well, like A-B-C. What's more, what would happen if you lost your paper agenda? With a Zire handheld, you can keep a copy of all your information on your PC.

Amazon.com Review

Small, light, and compact, the Palm Zire handheld is a great PDA for anyone looking for a basic electronic personal information manager to help organize their tasks, meetings, and contacts. Getting started with the Zire is simple, making it ideal for people who are new to the world of handheld devices.
Organization in your Palm
We were up and running within 20 minutes of opening the package. As part of our setup, we synced the Zire with Microsoft Outlook. Initially, we had to try twice before we could successfully sync our data, but have been able to sync data flawlessly ever since. All of our contacts and scheduled meetings transferred effortlessly, and we quickly came to depend on the Zire to tell us where and when we had to be at a given time. However, with only a 2 MB storage capability, this handheld won't hold a huge about of data.

The Zire is attractively colored with a white front and a silvery gray back, but Palm really cut corners with the screen cover. The cover is made of a flexible plastic that flaps around when it is supposed to be centered on the screen, and is awkward to keep out of the way when you want to access the screen. It's so annoying we recommend not using it at all. Fortunately, the screen cover comes separate from the Zire itself so this is easy to do.

While not a powerful handheld, the Zire is worth considering if you're looking for a way to keep your tasks, contacts, and meetings organized. It performs those tasks wonderfully, and is priced affordably. --Patricia Atherly

2 out of 5 stars Ok for a beginner, but lacks in advanced functions.......2005-10-23

Pros-
1.) Works good for someone who only needs basic functions such as date book, expense, etc.
2.) Compatible with Mac and PC, also can connect to other Palm Pilots via infrared transfer.

Cons-
1.) Black and white screen.
2.) Only 2 MB of memory. This is ok if you only use the basic functions of the unit, but if you install other applications it tends to start bogging it down.
3.) Unreliable battery. The battery lasted quite a while when I first got the unit, but after about a year of using it, it got to where now the charge only lasts for approx. 1 hour.

Conclusion:
This PDA is ok for a beginner or someone who needs basic functions, but if you are looking for a hard working PDA, invest a little more and get a better one.

5 out of 5 stars most reliable and battery efficient palm I've ever used.......2005-07-01

I have had a zire (bought it open-box off of [...]) for about 2 years and it has performed admirably. While this palm has some very well-known limitations, it has (and is still doing) everything I need it to.
pros:
-amazing battery life (never drained it past 1/2 full, even after weeks of (admittedly light) usage.
-extremely durable. I work at Staples and this thing goes through thick and thin with me while I bang it around during my 8-hour day. While it has plenty of scratches, nothing's gone wrong with it and it still looks halfway decent.
-nice flip screen protector. While some people hate it, it does not compromise the zire's compact qualities and protects the screen while it's in my pocket.
-Very reliable. I will say this again. Nothing has ever broken, and I have had no defects show on this palm.

cons:
-no backlight. Not an issue for me, but may be a dealbreaker for some.
-only 2 buttons plus up/down buttons on face. It would've been nicer with more buttons, but I make do fine like this.
-Not fast by any means. I only do basic applications like scheduling and contacts, which work fine. but this thing will be extremely slow with any application that's processor dependent.

Conclusion: this is a great model for someone desiring a simple palm with great battery life that will take a beating. spending a couple bucks on a used/refurbished model is a way better deal than going with palm's least expensive current offering, the zire 21 (or even the zire 31, which has abysmal battery life).

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable.......2005-01-27

I need a palm to have my calander and address book on hand at all times. This model proved to be extremely inefficient. The lack of backlighting meant that often I could not see what was on the screen and it's memory would empty from one moment to the next. I would be stuck with no calander or address book. I contacted the company by email and the only advice they had was to keep the Palm seperate from my cell phone. This I did, to no avail, the Palm continues to discharge it's memory.
I have now discharged the Palm into the rubbish bin and will not purchase another!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Item.......2005-01-26

I don't know what people expect when they buy this item, but for me, it was to keep addresses, phone numbers and download my outlook calendar. If that is all you expect, then this is perfect. For those people who live and die by the palm gadgets, then get yourself one of those expensive palms. Zire is cheap and convenient enough to take it anywhere you want and you don't get upset when you bang it around a bit. I had it for about a year and zero complaints. Also, the battery lasts extremely long for my purpose. So, if you are a simple guy like me, then this is perfect for you. If you are expecting a small computer, then you need to spend some money. Hope this helps.

2 out of 5 stars Decent product - horrible support!.......2004-08-31

I bought this Palm as a cheap contact manager - that's what I got - I knew what I was getting into. However, a word regarding Palm support...

After a couple months - the screen went completely black and I needed to call tech support. What a nightmare. It's obvious to anyone that Palm has exported its help desk overseas (India most likely). The five different support engineers I talked to ALL had very thick accents, could not understand simple English sentences, could not make logical decisions (they follow a very formal script) and made the whole experience VERY frustrating, time consuming and expensive (they don't have a toll-free number anymore). The point is simple - sooner or later you're probably going to call tech support for help - and in my opinion, the "help" desk at Palm is horrible!

Amazon.com Review

Palm's Zire brand is designed primarily for consumers rather than for professionals. The first Zire was a low cost, entry level machine, this one, the second in the range, is a multimedia extravaganza. The most eye catching feature of the Zire 71, after you've noticed the sleek rounded blue casing for the hardware, is the built-in digital camera.
The Zire 71's built-in digital camera
You need to slide the upper and lower body apart to reveal it, and when you do so the Zire 71's screen automatically turns into a viewfinder. Click the button that is also revealed during the sliding process, and you can take pictures, at resolutions of 160 x 120, 320 x 240 and 640 x 480.

Palm has even produced a new version of Palm Desktop to help you make the most of managing digital images. This includes a nice viewer and some editing tools. Palm Desktop also, incidentally, has a new installer which is more efficient than before when it comes to selecting multiple applications to send to your Palm. The Zire 71 runs version 5 of the Palm operating system, which has improved sound features. Install the provided copy of the Real One player and you can play MP3 music through headphones. Gaming is assisted by a joystick style navigation button that sits beneath the screen. But when you want to use the Zire 71 for more traditional personal information management tasks you can tap the application shortcut buttons to launch Date Book, Address Book or Note Pad. The fourth button takes you to your digital photo library. As usual these buttons can be reallocated to other applications if you like.

Only 13MB of to the 16MB of memory on board is actually available for applications and data, but an SD card slot means you can add to this easily. The screen is a superb transreflective TFT type - it is the best we've seen on a PDA from Palm. The Universal Connector means existing peripherals like keyboards which support this should work without problems with the Zire 71. The Zire 71 is a great multimedia PDA which finally puts Palm in a position to rival Sony for its Multimedia crown. --Sandra Vogel

2 out of 5 stars Zire 71 Loses Data Regularly.......2007-12-23

I agree with having had the repeated frustrating experience of having something in my purse hit the toggle, turn on the power, and then lose the charge in my battery. But what is worse is that I bought the Zire 71 to help me remember appointments and organize my addressess book, yet random items completely drop out of the memory. It is just awful! I tried downloading repair patches and they seemed to help a little, but there has been no cure. If this product is as leaky as my brain, then what good is it?

5 out of 5 stars Great palm. It will serve you well........2007-01-23

I bought this as an alternative to a laptop when I was in college. I purchased a fold-out keyboard and typed my notes in class. I kept my schedule, notes, assignments, photographs and some mp3s all in my pocket, then simply sync'd it to my home computer when I got home. The doodle feature in the notepad was very helpful to me, and the graffiti was equally as easy as the keyboard function. I was able to write substantial chunks of papers at the library or in cafes then transfer them to Word at home. The desktop program is very intuitive. It was so much lighter and less conspicuous than a laptop...especially walking all around campus. The camera feature is easy to use and it holds a ton of pictures. I totally recommend this product to anyone who is considering buying. It is worth taking the time to explore its features and use them!!!

3 out of 5 stars Zire long on features hard to use.......2007-01-05

rating really somewhaere between 3 and 3.5 stars depending on how much hassling with what I am trying to do.
I you are not very computer savy, don't get the Palm Zire 71. It fit my budget however and feature set for my budget. So far, it is filling the bill. It shows photos well, plays mp3's OK (Using real player sucks tho - GUI interface really poor). It has locked up once on me. No clear reason except was while trying to read a PDF.
The cradle is the worst design I have ever seen, you better get it on right or it does not connect and tips really really easy. We'll see if the cradle lasts.
Software included very very antiquated. I am going to have to get tealdoc just to read text files easily. I use it for practicing music on guitar and it works for that but a lot of fiddling.

My wife could never never use this thing.
Screen is excellent, Graffiti is better than my old visor. Seems to work fine with 512 meg sd card.
camera would be useful in a crash to document, not much else tho except really low quality snaps.

4 out of 5 stars PalmOne Zire 71 Handheld.......2007-01-03

I used this product for very short time. It was good and I give to my friend who continue enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars I may not be the best judge.......2006-04-18

I may not be the best judge of the quality of this PDA but i upgraded to it from my Palm Visor. It seemed easy enough to use and the camera feature was what drew my attention THE MOST! I loved this palm it remains my favorite long after its untimely demise (my dog stepped on the LCD screen! *cries*), i even tried to find on shortly after but no where could get me one as quickly as i needed it. So i was stuck with the zire 72. Its ok, the camera quality is MUCH better on the 71, and i miss it greatly but 118 bucks to replace for an identical or 120 to fix, just wasnt worth it. I loved this palm and would recommend it to any one! (Get the plug in keyboard too! Its awesome for college note taking!)
