Handspring Visor Deluxe (Graphite)

Product Description

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the first expandable handheld computer that lets you instantly turn an organizer into a digital camera, music player, or even a phone. It comes with 8 MB of RAM, so you have more than enough room to store all your data, plus a myriad of other programs and information. Plus, it features the amazing Springboard expansion slot, so you can snap in a wide range of hardware and software modules and turn your Visor into whatever you want it to be. Moreover, it is plug-and-play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works! It even comes in five great colors - ice, graphite, blue, orange, and green - so you are sure to find one that suits your style, personality, or mood.

Amazon.com Review

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the hot new handheld that runs the popular Palm OS, so it's compatible with thousands of existing applications. It's also expandable with Springboard modules that can add extra memory or a modem, or transform your Visor into an MP3 player, video game, GPS receiver, and more. Plus, its fast-synchronizing USB connection is compatible with both the PC and Macintosh.

To set up the Handspring Visor Deluxe, we followed the Getting Started instructions printed on the software CD-ROM case, inserting the batteries, calibrating the touch screen, entering the date and time, connecting the included USB cradle to our PC (an optional serial cradle is available), installing the desktop synchronization software, and synchronizing the Visor with our PC. The entire setup process was straightforward and intuitive, requiring only about five minutes.

Fans of Palm Computing's Palm III line of connected organizers will have no difficulty using the Visor, as it runs on a licensed version of the Palm OS. All the popular Palm personal information management (PIM) applications are included and work exactly the same way as they do on the Palm. The Visor also uses Palm's Graffiti handwriting recognition system for text entry, which takes only a few minutes to learn and a few hours of practice to master. Handspring has added to the Palm OS an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and support for floating-point math.

The Visor Deluxe comes with 8 MB of RAM, providing plenty of room for thousands of addresses, to-do items, and memos; hundreds of e-mail messages; and several years of appointments. It also includes a USB synchronization cradle, two AAA batteries, a stick-on Graffiti "cheat sheet," a leather slip case, a stylus, a Handspring logo decal, a Quick Reference Guide, inserts describing accessories and cases, and a software CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes Palm Desktop Software 3.01, a software link to Microsoft Outlook, and the full-length User's Guide. However, the Visor Deluxe does not come with an AC adapter.

Using the Visor was intuitive and fun, just like the Palm III series organizers that it's based on. However, unlike the Palm, the Visor has an easily accessible expansion port that supports Springboard modules. For our tests, we installed a modem module, an 8 MB memory module, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf game, and a Physician's Desk Reference module (note that you can install only one module at a time). Installing these modules is very easy, and they can greatly increase the functionality, power, and usefulness of the Visor. (For more information, see the descriptions of the individual Springboard modules.

Overall, we were very impressed with the Visor. It takes the best of the popular Palm platform, and adds memory and expandability--all at a great price. --Mike Brown

Amazon.com Product Description

Important note to customers: Your Visor comes with a free USB cradle, but not all computers and operating system are USB compatible. If your computer uses Windows 95, Windows NT, or Mac OS 8.0 or below, or if your computer is not equipped with USB ports, you'll need to purchase an additional serialcradle to synchronize your computer with your new Visor. The Handspring Visor Deluxe connected organizer is all you'll need to store thousands of names, addresses, appointments, memos, to-do items, expense items, and e-mail. Based on the popular Palm OS, the Handspring Visor Deluxe is fully compatible with thousands of Palm Computing platform applications. Plus, Handspring has added features to the Palm OS like an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and built-in floating-point math support.

The Handspring Visor Deluxe offers a fast USB connection, making synchronizing your PC or Mac simple. Exchange of information between your handheld and PC occurs with the touch of a button. HotSync technology ensures all your data is backed up and enables significantly faster synchronization with USB support than the normal serial connection. (An optional serial cradle is available.)

The Handspring Visor Deluxe with its 8 MB RAM also stores 12,000 addresses, 10 years of appointments, 6,000 to-do items, 6,000 memos, and 400 e-mail messages, plus it has plenty of room for add-on applications. This model includes support for Lotus cc:Mail, Microsoft Outlook, and Qualcomm Eudora. Software to synchronize with AOL, Lotus Notes, Netscape Communicator, and POP3 mail is sold separately.

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is fully expandable with an external expansion slot that lets you add optional software and hardware modules (called Springboard modules) in a snap. Modules like an MP3 player, pager, modem, GPS receiver, or video game can be added to make a new device.

The Handspring Visor Deluxe comes with a HotSync cradle, stylus, snap cover, leather slip case, Palm Desktop software (Windows and Mac), software link to Microsoft Outlook (Windows only), two AAA batteries, and a one-year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ITEMS STILL!!!.......2006-12-05

Compared to the technology and color screen palm pilots and handsprings of today, THis is truley a classic and lasted long! IT's a great item for anyone who loves to be organized (school, business...). And Great Customer Service.

5 out of 5 stars Lasted Four Years - I weep for Palm.......2006-03-06

I am filled with feelings of anger and despair as I see the once great Palm Corporation in its death throes. I bought my first Handspring Visor Deluxe in early 2001 for $250 -- had it stolen 11 months later -- and bought another refurbished one from Handspring in Feb 2002 for just $100. The device gave me outstanding service until it died just a few days after its 4th (re)birthday. A refurbished device lasting 4 years! Since yesterday I have been looking for a replacement, inexpensive PalmOS handheld. Unfortunatlely, there is only PalmOne (or whatever they are called now) corporation left (having swallowed Handspring) and the PalmOS has been sold to a Japanese company. The reviews for Palm's current products -- nearly all from longtime loyal Palm-product users -- nearly uniformly slam the products.

I am depressed. I hate the MS PocketPC (or whatever they call the current version) devices -- they are much too complex, they are slow, they are too Windows-like, and they are darned expensive. In contrast, PalmOS devices were snappy, reliable, simple and easy to use, and relatively inexpensive. What more could one ask for?

There seems to be no reasonable alternative now. Should I take a risk with the low end Palm Z22 (and have it fail in two months). Handspring's customer service used to be outstanding. Palm's current customer service sucks big time. Even if the company goes out of business in the next six months (it definitely will be gone before December 2006), I don't care, as long as I can get a decent PalmOS device that lasts the next 4 years.

Thanks for all the good times, Handspring and Palm! Too bad you faded away and left us to be devoured by Microsoft.

4 out of 5 stars Visor Deluxe Blue.......2006-01-19

The best at this price. Like the color and functions. Mine has latest longer than some comparable higher end models. Life saver when trying to keep a busy life organized. Great optional backlight feature.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-12-18

Even though it is expensve, it is a palm pilot. You can plug it in via USB. It is a good PDA.

4 out of 5 stars Visor Deluxe.......2005-10-01

Unit works about as expected, with possible exception of a few areas of the screen that are not too sensitive to the touches from the stylus. So far I am working around that. This is my 3rd Deluxe and the 1st one to give any operational problem of any sort. Generally a good product.

5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive PDA for someone who wants somethign simple........2007-09-22

This PDA is great for the user who doesn't need all the fancy features and superfluous accessories and gadgets and functions that may make a PDA seem too cluttered. It includes the basic features like memo, to-do, contacts, calendar, calculator, etc. It is light and MAY include a keyboard that allows the user to type long memos or appointments quickly. It uses AAA batteries which avoids having those wires and cords for recharging which may take a while for other PDAs.

5 out of 5 stars MY FIRST PDA.......2005-08-18

This was my pest pda i ever got o and you HAVE to back up alot it WILL die and you have to leave the batters out for about an hour put new batts can put olds the net day thought but you WILL lose all your data so back up outher wise you will have nothing.I gave it 5 stars because it has never has compleatly died on me. Like this coputer or my outher palms. My grandafather gave me this one because he got a blue one with 6 mgs of ram. Also it uses AAAs so I dont have to buy the recharble batts that are about 40.99 and amost caust as almost as much as the pda.I us Ni-cd Ni-mh AAAs because I can recharge tham and they are not 40.99 for a batt that will only last about a year.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible experience with my Visor..........2004-08-15

I had the same problem that reviewer Mr. McCoy had. I recieved my Visor and it came with batteries. I turned it on and at some point during the setup process the Visor shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't. Resets (soft and hard) did nothing. I changed out the batteries with brand new ones. The Visor came on and within half an hour, it shut down again. Not allowing the SAME batteries to be used. I went through 3 sets of brand new batteries and this happened every time. The longest my Visor has stayed on has been 30 minutes or less.

I also had a problem where I would turn it on and then turn it off. Once it was turned off, I couldn't use the same batteries again. It wouldn't turn back on until I used a new set. I have heard many many people have the same kind of issue with this and the best thing I can say, is listen to the people who are encountering this kind of problem. They are not alone with this issue!! There appears to be a flaw in a bulk amount of these Visors.

2 out of 5 stars Data Lost Twice; doesn't want it's batteries changed.......2003-06-27

I was so happy to see that I wasn't the only person who had problems with this device. I love it's capabilities, but have lost data twice: first time I received a change battery warning, so changed batteries, and zap! everything gone.Contacted Handspring, (what a messy website)and lots of words came back, but were they really listening? Second time, I decided to replace batteries long before they needed it, just in case. Data gone. I did the change very fast, less than a minute as advised. I want a refund/repair or new device, but can't really get through to them. I've cooled down somewhat (they depend on that, I imagine) but surprise! I'm buying a new PDA, and it won't be one of theirs! Here I am, researching other brands.

1 out of 5 stars Works great -- when it works at all.......2002-10-26

Bought mine in September, 2000, just a few months after it was released, so I believe I got one of the early versions. Wonderful product, at first. Had no problems and loved the external keyboard. But a few months later, something strange happened: I would turn it off (or it would shut down on its own), and when I turned it on again a few days later, the batteries would be dead! All information LOST. Batteries would have to be changed. This happened several times, and I finally contacted Handspring before the warranty was expired. Thankfully, they replaced my unit.

But it happened again. And again, and again, and again. The batteries did not go dead from overuse, rather something inside the unit continued to draw power even after it was supposed to be powered off. Not a good thing for those of us who synch infrequently!

After another year of this (and about a dozen batteries), I called Handspring and demanded they replace this with a different model, because this is clearly a design flaw. They wouldn't do anything. One year warranty, that's it. Done. No more soup for you! I guess they expect you to buy a new Visor every year!! Shouldn't this thing last me at least five????

I won't buy another Handspring. I won't even recommend them to other people. It's possible I got unlucky twice, but if the company isn't going to stand behind their product, I'll buy something else.

It may also be a lot to ask to have the product replaced outside of the warranty, but if this happens with every unit, shouldn't Handspring recognize there's a mistake and recall these units?

1 out of 5 stars WILL NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER.......2004-04-22

After reading the review from "An electronics fan from Hawaii," I have decided not to purchase from this buyer. I have had this same thing occur with on-line purchases and I think it is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously this seller has no faith in his ability to sell his product if his policy is "once you buy it, it's yours... I'm not taking it back no matter what." That really makes me nervous about purchasing something from you. Return policies establish trust. I am looking for a new docking cradle for a Handspring Visor. I will NOT purchase from these guys based on this return policy. CAVEAT EMPTOR - BUYER BEWARE!

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me.......2003-05-27

It arrived without delay, and worked immediately using the downloadable software. I had an older serial cradle for a Visor Graphite, but needed a USB connection for use with a newer Mac laptop.

1 out of 5 stars Not pleased........2002-07-21

The unit ordered did not fit my Visor Handheld unit. I offered to pay for all shipping costs (to and from my location) to return unit to seller. Seller preferred to make a statement that they did not "misrepresent" the product sold, and as a result would not accept a return. I never stated that the seller misrepresented anything,... I merely wanted to return an unused unit which I could not use. Seller refused, and shared with me their personal buying errors that they have accepted and lived with as "learning experiences." If sellers would be understanding, these learning experiences would be minimized in the marketplace, don't you think!

5 out of 5 stars Very easy to use, this item is a must........2001-05-30

Although majority of the Handspring units come with a cradle. I purchased a second cradle for use at work so I can backup/hotsync my visor everyday in two locations(redundancy is good).

USB connectivity is great, as long as you're running Windows 95B and later or Windows 2000. Sorry for the NT users, it's time to upgrade to Windows 2000.

Serial cradles seem to a bit slower, but it depends on how much stuff you hotsync.

5 out of 5 stars Stay In Sync.......2001-04-16

I got my Visor one week and ordered the second cradle the next week! A must if you are syncing a home and a work computer. At work I sync with Outlook and at home I use the Palm desktop software and they get along great.

5 out of 5 stars Question:.......2001-06-19

I am buying a Visor Handspring, but I already have a Hotsync cradle that came with my now dead Palm 3X. Will that cradle work with my new Handspring, or must I buy this? (sorry, I know that this is not a rating, but I know that some other shoppers will be interested to read the answer! Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Without a USB port, what good is a PDA?.......2001-01-12

A lot of good if you have this serial cradle!

Our computers don't support USB in our somewhat dated NT4 Workstation environment. Without this serial cradle, I would not be able to sync my Visor.

5 out of 5 stars well..................2000-12-26

Well what can i say? Its a hotsync cradle. Its not really so special. It does what its supposed to do. Ive never seen it do any tricks or anything. Maybe it does stuff while im not looking. An invaluable tool for d.l.'s, and i dont see owning a visor without one...in fact, dont they come with the visor? Why would i need another one?

4 out of 5 stars This is a good alternative for Palm Developers.......2000-11-22

I was developing software for Handspring using CodeWarrior. Unfortunately the current CodeWarrior(c) does not support USB yet, so I have to look for a serial cradle for Handspring. This is very helpful for me to download the Palm binary code for POSE/Palm emulator.

I haven't tried this cradle to other softwares, put it seems to work to other softwares too as long as they have COMx supports.

5 out of 5 stars A great alternative.......2000-06-22

It's great that Handspring makes this an available option. My desktop has USB, so the USB cradle comes with the Visor fits the bill. But my laptop does not have USB. There are three options available. First is of course to live without a second cradle for a while, because I might soon buy a new laptop. Who knows! Second is to buy a PCMCIA card adapter for UBS port. Third is to buy Handspring's serial port cradle. It's not a big decision, but it's not an easy one either. I in fact mulled over this for a while before deciding to take the serial cradle. The main reasoning for getting the serial cradle is that I figure I need a second cradle anyway, one at home and one at work. Yes the serial cradle is much slower than the USB, but Palm users have alway used the slow serial port sync, and they still do. With this respect, I must thank Handspring for introducing a fast USB sync while at the same time making a serial port cradle available. As a standing alone product, I would rate it four star due the lack of speed, but as an option within a complete product line, the serial cradle deserves a solid five star.

4 out of 5 stars Active Armor protection.......2002-10-15

I have had the Active Armor case for about 3 weeks now and have developed somewhat of a love-hate relationship with it. The protection for my handheld is absolutely wonderful and I am very pleased with that aspect. On the flip side, I am not able to hot-sync using the desktop cradle unless I remove the handheld from the case each time--not a terrible thing but a bit time consuming. Also, the stylus holder that is provided on the outside of the case is poorly designed and you will be purchaseing additional styli if you us it.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Your Visor Protected.......2002-10-13

An absolute essential if you want to keep your visor handheld safe from the accidental tumbles and bumps it is likely to experience. This protective case allows for outstanding protection but is sleek enough to carry in your pocket. Quite a remarkable concept considering you probably purchased your visor to get away from the bulk of a paper organizer.
My only qualm is that you cannot fit the visor into the hotsync cradle. A minor complaint considering the amount of protection this handy gadget provides to your investment. So, I highly recommend you purchase the USB cable instead as you will be able to connect that way. Other then that, this is a MUST HAVE if you own a Handspring Visor.

    Handspring Visor Platinum (Graphite)

    Product Description

The Handspring Visor, the first infinitely expandable handheld computer, is now even faster. In fact, the Visor Platinum is 50% faster than the Visor Deluxe. The Visor Platinum gives you enhanced power, speed and performance so you can access all your data and view crisp grayscale graphics without the wait. And, like the Visor, it comes with the unique Springboard expansion slot, so you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem or even a phone. Best of all, it is Plug and Play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works! If you're one of those people who uses lots of RAM, keeps tons of records, plays games or uses apps that have high-performance requirements, the Visor Platinum has the very speed you need. Now you can access all your data without the wait. And the grayscale graphics - with 16 shades of gray - are so crisp that every picture is as clear as day. What's more, since the Visor Platinum is based on the latest Palm OS, it's got new usability, security and navigation features, too.

    Amazon.com Review

One of Handspring's two new Visors running with the faster 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ processor, the Visor Platinum offers a competitive option to the Palm V series. Although it doesn't sport a color display like its new sibling, the Visor Prism, the Platinum offers 16 shades of gray, providing sharper graphics output for games and applications. It also features 8 MB of memory like the Visor Deluxe, providing plenty of room for storing contacts, notes, and e-mail.

But the Visor Platinum's selling point is its new processor, which performs faster than other Visors or Palm handhelds (Handspring claims up to a 50 percent increase in speed). While we didn't put a radar gun to the Platinum, it certainly felt speedier than the Visor Deluxe--tapping on an application opened it almost instantaneously.

Using a USB cradle, our desktop synchronizations sped along nicely, usually completed in just a few seconds unless we were adding applications. Additionally, since the Platinum uses the Palm OS, most third-party programs written for Palm handhelds will work for the Platinum.

One difference between the Visor Platinum and the Palm V series that Handspring most likely won't boast about is its size. Where the sleek Palm V series sports a depth of only 0.4 inches, the Platinum retains the standard Visor form factor of 0.7 inches.

But when you've got the expandability that the Handspring's Springboard module slot offers--allowing you to add a digital camera, a cell phone, a Tiger Woods golf game, or an MP3 player--you don't need to quibble over slimness. Also, like other Visors, the Platinum features a built-in microphone (though you'll need to add a module, such as a voice recorder or the phone module, to use it).

If you're already a Palm or Handspring user, there may not be enough about the Platinum to sway you to pick up this new product. But if you're looking for the cutting edge of handheld speed, the Platinum is ready and raring to go. --J. Curtis

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Handspring Visor Platinum is an infinitely expandable handheld computer that's 50 percent faster than the Visor Deluxe. With its enhanced power, speed, and performance, the Visor Platinum satisfies your need for speed and makes accessing all your data and viewing crisp gray scale graphics even easier. It runs Palm OS 3.52 for the Handspring on a Motorola 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor.

In addition to an address book, to-do list, and memo pad, the Platinum Visor features an enhanced date book, advanced calculator, and world clock. The 8 MB memory stores approximately 12,000 addresses, 10 years of appointments, 6,000 to-do items, 6,000 memos, and 400 e-mails. It has usability features like address duplication and improved security and navigation. Since it uses the Palm OS, you can beam information with other Palm users or download thousands of existing Palm-compatible applications. With the Springboard expansion slot, you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem, an MP3 player, and more.

The Platinum's USB connection makes synchronizing with your desktop computer fast and easy. You can quickly back up, update, or exchange information between the Platinum and your computer with the USB charging cradle and HotSync technology.

The graphite Visor Platinum comes with a protective leather case, Palm Desktop software for Windows and Mac, and two AAA batteries. It is backed by one-year limited warranty.

Important note to customers: USB connectivity is compatible with Windows 98/2000/Me and USB-enabled Macintoshes running OS 8.1 and later. If you use Windows 95, Windows NT, or Mac OS 8.0 or lower, or your computer does not have a USB port, you will need to buy a separate serial cradle.

If you use handheld just to manage database like I do, this product is a good choice. The price is reasonable, and the silver case is impressive. 8M is quite enough as long as I don't install a big dictionary. Still, here are some concerns I want to share with you:
*the battery only lasts for two weeks instead of two months stated by Handspring (I am not a heavy user!). I got to get rechargeable AAA otherwise the bill for battery is unthinkable.
*the screen got scratch easily. I only use it for two weeks and several scratches are found. I had to get WriteRight sticker to protect it.
*the backlight doesn't function as good as Palm M500 series. If you need to use backlight function alot, don't take this one.

Overall, it's a good product with reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars Worth having if you need a central location for info........2001-12-04

First, I have experience with WinCE since I owned a Philips unit (the one before the Nino came out). But let's face it folks: you don't use a PDA to replace your PC -- you use it as a supplement that works hand in hand with it. I never once used the built in keyboard in anykind of serious fashion on that device.

My excuse for buying the Visor Platinum was a program called DietLog for PalmOS (not available on WinCE). My dietician recommended it (I'm trying to lower my HDL cholesterol level -- that program on a PalmOS device makes it kinda fun I guess).

Other reasons for buying a PDA: if your hard drive has ever crashed, you know how frustrating it is having to cull all your personal contact info. again and typing it in. But with it all backed up on your PalmOS device, you can simply reinstall the Palm HotSync software, sync the device and there is all your old info!

Travel alarm clock: I use an application that turns the Visor into an alarm clock (also, the DateBook+ app can function like this).

Offline web browsing: I use AvantGo's offline web browser to take web sites with me to read on the go.
Vindigo also makes a cool web-like application to find restraunts, movies, and shoppping places wherever you are (it downloads the latest info from its servers).

These are just a few cool and useful applications of the Handspring Visor Platinum. I know the extra memory will come in handy (I learned this when I had a WinCE device -- even if you don't think you'll need the extra memory, you'll be glad you got it later).

Also, if you want a wireless connection and you own a cell phone with a wireless web capability, you can buy a cord that attached your cell phone to the Visor so the cell phone acts like a modem for the Visor. These connecting cords are available from several online retailers(...). I've not tried this yet, but it's a cheaper alternative to buying the expensive module that allows wireless access.

Overall, I'm happy with the unit and agree with what most reviewers have posted here. However, I have two concerns/complaints:

    1) the glittery silver finish looks painted on to me, so it'll probably start to wear off after two years of use (though conventional wisdom is that if you get 3 or more years out of a PDA, you got your money's worth).
    2) the backlight is a joke -- you can't really use this in the dark.

I still recommend the product. The PalmOS is just more intuitive than WinCE.

5 out of 5 stars Handspring Visor Platinum (VPL) review.......2001-11-06

As a long-time user of PDA's (circa 1989), I must admit that the VPL, next to the Newton MessagePad, is quite affordable and versatile. And with the inclusion of the VisorPhone, I now carry only one device. Comparing the VPL to a Pocket PC is similar to comparing a Honda with a Lexus. Sure, both will perform the same function of getting from A to B, and the Lexus will carry one in style, but the Honda is more practical and less expensive to own and maintain. That's how I view the VPL. For what I want to do, the VPL does it, plain and simple. Heck, my life is in it: checkbook (Accounts & Loans), budget (QuikBudget), database (ThinkDB), eBooks and newspapers (PalmReader and AvantGo), daily notes (DayNotez), life organizer (LifeBalance and DateBk4), outlining thoughts (ShadowPlan), my office (QuickOffice), email and casual web browsing. While the VPL can do all this, not everyone would want to necessarily. The fact is, it's affordable and versatile. I can't wait for the next PDA incarnation!

This item is so behind the times and outrageously overpriced. This reconditioned relic from the past wouldn't be worth more than $20. I had one of these when they first came out and paid an amazing $80 for an extra 8 MB of RAM. Nowadays you can get 1 GB for that price. This item belongs in a museum.
