4 out of 5 stars Great value - the audio cuts out occasionally........2007-12-19

I'm a musician and I use the TuneTalk all the time to record song ideas. It has one annoying flaw...often it cuts out. A second or two are just gone. This is expecially annoying when a song suddenly jumps ahead a few words- there goes the tempo when you're trying to play along.

If anyone knows how to fix or avoid this let me know.

5 out of 5 stars Works with a new "Classic" iPod.......2007-12-02

I don't think it mentions it - but it does work fine with a Classic 80gig iPod. Actually it works extremely well for recording college classes. No issues - easy to operate.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2007-11-27

I bought this for my girlfriend to record interviews. She was using a micro-cassette recorder, and I figured she could use something a bit more modern and with better sound quality.

The sound quality is more than adequate for this purpose, and is definitely better than I expected for such a low-cost item.

The recordings are a much better quality than the special purpose voice-recorders that are available and it's nice to have the almost unlimited storage of your iPod, instead of having to worry about how much time you have left etc.

Overall, it's not great sounding compared to an expensive dedicated field-recording device, but I don't really expect it to, considering its price. If you're looking for something to capture interviews or lectures or generally get a clear and intelligible recording of something to listen to later, it's an unbelievable value. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2007-11-24

As a student at a top music conservatory, I use the 'TuneTalk Stereo' all the time!!! It's great for recording lessons, coachings, practice sessions, or actual recordings! The quality is very very good especially for the price and size! It fits perfectly into the bottom of my 80 gig iPod and is very easy to use! I definitely recommend this to anyone... especially music students!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Garbage poorly made.......2007-11-21

Within 15 minutes of attaching the tune talk, while trying to adjust the gain the little plastic widget fell right out of the tune talk thingy. I can't comment on the use of the product since I promptly took it back for a refund. It is so shoddily made that while it might be a great product WHEN it works, I wouldn't spend $60 on something that fell apart in jsut 15 minutes. I am a 45 year old woman, not rough on electronics, so I can only imagine what a student would do to this thing.

1 out of 5 stars the worst product I have purchased from Amazon!.......2007-12-13

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!

I am sorry to say, this USB Thumb drive is without a doubt the worst thing I have ever purchased on Amazon!

Just trying to physically plug it in to a laptop is an exercise in futility! The physical operation of this drive is ridiculous.

Trying to delete the 'free' junk software off this drive seems to be impossible.

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!

4 out of 5 stars Watch out for sand in your pockets.............2007-12-04

SanDisk - great company, great product. 8GB - I use for everything, but bought it particularly for review and editing of home movies, no problem works very well.

As I recall this Cruiser came with some kind of case or holder.... I discarded it, THIS WAS A MISTAKE!. This little device has some very close tolerance mechanical parts that jamb up or at the very least work very hard if you get any grit into them. I still have use of the device, it just work hard most of the time. Knowing this now for me personally, I would choose a simpler device. Still hoping the sand will work its way out......Still Cruising.

5 out of 5 stars I like the Cruzer Contour.......2007-11-26

I like this USB drive.
It's fast enough to dump 2600+ file (backup) in a few minutes.
I tried it with Vista Ready Boost. Not sure about any performance increase as I'm running with 2GB memory, and don't keep a lot of Windows open. I'm sure it would help if your memory is on the low side.
The classy little Contour is sometimes stubborn to reveal its connector, or at least till you get the hang of it. It's a pull back/push forward to reveal, and push forward/pull back to close. If you've ever used the other Cruzer drives, you pull back to close, push forward to reveal. Wouldn't recommend owning both types, too confusing. It does come with user activated PW protection, and other software stuff if you want. You can format the drive with out blowing away any firmware. If somehow it does go away, you can reload from SanDisk.

I like SanDisk products, I use SD cards in cameras, MP3 (Rhapsody) .rax players, and PDA's, no problems over the past two years. Price keep dropping also. I liked this UNIT sooo much I bought another 8GB Contour to be delivered tomorrow. PLUG: Amazon is my friend, I truly find their prices, and delivery times outstandingly good! Tracking and customer service are also high on my list of what makes a good online retailer, broker, reseller of things! They may not always be lowest price, but a fair price, and you will get your order! Nuff said about that.

If you need an extra 8GB of storage, that's portable and fast, quick to connect, cool looking(not a toy), secure and reliable the Contour is a good choice for sure. I now have two. I do recommend this product. byit

5 out of 5 stars Fast and loads of space.......2007-10-16

I will not list the specifications in this review because you can read it from other reviewers or the SanDisk site. Instead I would like to address some of the comments listed in other reviews.

Comparing this drive to my other brand, this drive is a little larger. However, anytime you have something sticking out of the USB on your laptop it can get in the way or accidentally hit, no matter what the size.

True there is not way to put a lanyard on the drive, but it does have a case with a hook for a lanyard. This is a much better idea for transporting because the drive is protected in the case.

The transfer speed of this drive is many times faster than my other drive. I transferred 7gb of files in less than 8 minutes and without any corrupt files.

The mechanism for opening and closing the drive is a little odd, but I have had no problems. It just takes a little getting use to. Plus, you do not have to worry about misplacing a cap.

The issues a few reviewers had are very minor to me. I personally really like this drive because it works great, it is fast and has a lot of space.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfied.......2007-10-04

I spent the additional money for the Contour to take advantage of the increased transfer rates. I am completely happy with the performance, the hardware, and the connection mechanism (which others have complained about).
I installed Linux (Fedora) on the drive and use it as my portable operating system, and backup for my office machine. I have had the drive in service for five months, used every day with no problems. On one occasion I timed the transfer of a just over one GB, it took 70 seconds.
The drive is by far my largest in physical size, but that is a very small factor in light of the high performance. For machines that I have difficulty reaching the USB ports I use an extension (wire) with no problems. The leather storage pouch is a nice bonus, since I have dropped mine a few time on the concrete (durable).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Garmin 2820 Works well with Bluetooth.......2007-08-03

I bought this item several months ago and recently took it on a motorcycle trip to New England and Canada. I managed to hook it up with Bluetooth with my helmet and my cell phone which hung on my belt. Amazingly, it worked for cell phone calls going down the road in Toronto. The only drawback is that one needs to do a "reality check" for routes it may decide on. Some routes were out of the way or no longer in existence. A bonus was looking up the weather on areas I was planning to go to.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin 2820 GPS.......2007-07-27

My wife and I just returned home from a 5,351 mile trip on our motorcycle. The trip went from California into Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. This GPS worked amazingly well throughout the trip. It provided lodging information and fueling information as well as complete directions for our entire trip, which I had pre-loaded before departure. Any changes we made enroute were easily entered while on the road.

Addresses were easily found by typing the address into the 2820 and then punching "Go to". We never failed to find any address so entered. This came in handy for finding laundries and other places which weren't listed in the Garmin database.

My wife carried a back-up map. On a couple of occasions early on, she doubted the GPS and we went a different way than where the GPS wanted us to go. In the end, we found that the GPS really knew best most of the time. As our confidence in the GPS built, we used it almost exclusively.

The Bluetooth feature worked well with our cell phone allowing us to make and answer calls while riding the bike. We also had the XM Radio as well as MP3 tunes loaded on the unit. When tall mountains and trees blocked our XM signal, we simply switched to the MP3, which gave us ongoing tunes to listen to while traveling.

All in all, this is a great product!

5 out of 5 stars Don't drive anywhere without one!.......2007-07-08

Overall I love this unit. I recommend it to friends and demo it in their cars when we travel. The other reviews cover a lot of the features and I agree with most of what has been said about this unit. I've extensively used two other nav systems, Hertz's and the built in one on my previous car, a Nissan 2005 Quest. I like this a lot more then either one. I have had this for 10 months now and use it almost daily. I found early on some issues and had to struggle to not complain as I learned its many amazing features. Mnay early issues were resolved by sitting with it and drilling down into new screens and features. The review below is based on many thousands of miles driven trying to either challenge it or fine tune my understanding of it. I've driven in new areas, well known areas, learned new routes, been through challenging city environments and almost featureless landscapes. If I didn't like it so much I would not have taken the time to review it at this depth. I hope it is useful. I rarely travel without it.

Size and form: Fits in my Honda Accord glove box fine. The remote is great and key to a good nav experience for me. Screen has good room for interesting info. Found out like many cars my speedometer over estimates my speed by 3 to 4 mph at any speed over 10 mph. For the size I would have liked a speaker built in, as others have noted.

Missing feature/place for improvement #1: The buttons on the unit are okay but why not a mute button? Garmin knows there will be sound coming out of it, the AUX to car stereo or the one on the power cord, plenty of room for one. No external mute anywhere either on the unit of the remote is a serious oversight.

XM and traffic: Far out! Who knew what was out there on XM! I love it! The choices are wonderful. And the traffic avoidance! WOW! On trips XM is a fabulous choice when the local radio isn't playing anything interesting. One thing I didn't know what Hawaii is not covered by XM. I drove around Maui for 10 days missing my XM radio. Signal strength varies as you reach the Pacific Coast and are in mountains like in Colorado. The XM traffic is AMAZING. Incidents pop up on the map, the voice will say "activating better route" and the recalculate function routes you around accidents, construction, etc. I've learned several new routes due to this feature and saved amazing amounts of time commuting in LA County and traveling on the weekends to nearby counties for fun. I don't feel right driving anymore with out this aid, very worthwhile, pays for itself right away in hours saved. There are two issues I have with the traffic calculations. One is the info is delayed a bit, I've encountered incidents I heard on AM radio reports that XM didn't know yet. And cleared incidents have a lag also.

Missing feature/place for improvement #2: I wish there was a recalculate feature that started from the top and regathered the traffic info, or even bypassed it. Sometimes the unit is so set on a route I have to power it off, power it back on without the XM antenna, set the destination, reattach the antenna to get it to generate a useful route that doesn't insist on a huge detour.

Maps, routing and zoom: Love the maps, rarely confused when looking at them or listening to the descriptions of where to go. Complex keep left/then immediately exit right when not listening to the audio could be better.

Missing feature/place for improvement #3: Use of telling the driver the recommended lanes to be in would be a HUGE help.

I love the auto-zoom in as I approach the turn, very well done. I wish I could set the auto-zoom out to a more focused view. A 10 to 50 mile view when on long freeways is pretty much uninteresting, I want to see the local stuff as I drive through an area. I manually hit the IN button on the remote 5 to 6 times to see a view pretty much what the freeway signs are confirming to me.

More on routing and voice announcements: It is annoying to hear every freeway interchange as I drive interrupt the XM music. After a few days I discovered a mode that just does a tone when it wants to tell me something, a huge relief. I almost sent it back based on the annoyance of the routing. If I am on a freeway and not leaving it shut up already! So, I killed the voice and can hit the SPEAK button when needed.

Route choices: Why can't this amazing machine learn my preferences and given that I ignored its directions a dozen times and always take a particular route incorporate what I do in its routing? It is tracking where I go, I see the dots of past travel. I have to put a hard avoid road or two in to get it to go the way I want it to.

Missing feature/place for improvement #4: A preference to "follow breadcrumbs" would be good, don't you think?

Avoidance ratings: Three levels of avoidance, prefer, don't avoid, avoid. What's up with that? Use a road? Yes, maybe or no. I get exasperated with it wanting me to get on every freeway anywhere near my start or end of route. It has me go on three sides of a square 5 miles each leg rather than go 5 miles on surface streets in the mode of "don't avoid" medium roads. Most of the thoroughfares in LA County it counts as medium. Say what?

Missing feature/place for improvement #5: Give me more levels of road classifications (Interstates, US routes, state routes, county routes, main streets, medium streets local streets, dirt roads, based on civil engineer classifications maybe), give me as many levels of choice (with the above, say 8). Have a default of if the travel is less than X number of miles auto-avoid any freeways, or auto-prefer other roads. Even destinations less than 2 miles away on surface streets it urges me to get on freeways.

Setting destinations: Works well for addresses. Setting an address number and street and letting it pop up with the list of cities to choose from is amazing. 50% of the time the address turns out to be unique and only one California destination fits. Works sometimes well and not others for points of interest. The classification systems for restaurants is challenged and not all that useful. I enter the city as a destination, enter the name search and click "find near destination." Clunky but it works.

PC interface: I use a lot of computers and am confident that I understand ergonomics pretty well. I have to say I am not attracted to using this as it is so, well, bad. What I have poked around in I don't see a lot of automation, it seems mostly attuned to data entry.

Missing feature/place for improvement #5: What I would love to see is a Google Maps interface that works like say you search for "Whole Foods Markets near here" and it gives you an option to populate the Garmin address book. And you could hook up the Garmin and it auto populates the Favorites. Sigh, I wish this were the case.

Signal strength: Cities sometimes confuse it as most nav systems are confused. Review your route ahead of times when you are going into high rise areas. LA is fine, few high rises. SF was laughable at times, Seattle too, with all the bounces. Sitting still it would say we were driving at different speeds as satellite signals bounced in around the buildings.

Bluetooth: Until I got my Jawbone headset I used this all the time. Now only when the `bone is out of juice do I use it.

So, I love it, overall. I am annoyed with it in places and can see where minor programming and interface or hardware changes could make this even better than the outstanding unit it is. It is SOOOO close to what I have always expected from nav systems when they were first described to me.

Good job Garmin, an "A" rating, close to "A+"!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good GPS, Small Issues.......2007-07-03

I bought this GPS system mainly for the fact that I needed multiple point input, and it does that rather well. The program that Garmin includes is a bit rustic looking, but works well.

Before this I used Streets and Trips on a laptop, and the laptop just wasn't able to handle the road vibration, so when I say these negative things, that's what I'm comparing it to:

1. The voice on this unit grates on my brain like nails on a chalkboard, nevermind that there are far more voices to use, it just announces way too often...I'm still looking for a way to reduce the vocalization without turning off the volume entirely.

2. Related to number 1, there should be a mute button on the hardwired buttons on the front.

3. The speaker is attached to the cigarette lighter power cord, so I'm having difficulty trying to figure out how to hardwire it into my system without getting rid of the speaker.

4. USB transfers of audio books are so slow I just put them on my Rio (another unrelated mp3 player)

Pros:
1. EXCELLENT navigation and recalculation times. This thing definitely works as a GPS. The recalculation is superior to Streets and Trips IMO.

2. The night mode really does reduce stress on your eyes.

3. The included bean bag mount really works well, it doesn't slide at all!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-06-27

This was a Christmas present for my daughter, who is directionally challenged and living in a city where few of the streets run true north and south (not that she understands north and south anyway.) It's fabulous, and does everything she needs it to do and more.

If she wants to find a McDonalds, it'll ask her if she wants one close to her destination or close to her current location.

This was pricey, but one of my best purchases ever.

Sony MZ-NE410 High Speed Net MD Walkman Recorder

Product Description

Get up to speed with Sony's MZ-NE410 High Speed Net MD Walkman Recorder. This product enables you to record your MP3s or CDs at up to 32x Speed, Play Back ATRAC3 Audio, MP3, WMA, and WAV, enjoy up to 56 hours continuous playback using 1 "AA" Battery (LP4 Mode), and play more than 5 hours of Music on one 80-minute disc. Take advantage of the supplied Music Management Software including SonicStage Software and the Net MD Simple Burner Application. Skip-Free G-Protection Technology enables a smooth listening experience, and "Easy Skip" Group/Folder function allows for easy navigation between multiple file folders. The NetMD Recorder is the best digital choice for you with the MZ-NE410.

Amazon.com Product Description

The MZ-NE410 Net MD Walkman recorder has everything needed to create great-sounding music mixes. In addition to transferring music at up to 32x speed (using its LP4 mode), the unit's SonicStage Jukebox software stores and manages digital music files, custom playlists, and music transfers, making it a cinch to transfer music to the device. The MZ-NE410 offers high-speed transfer from a PC via a direct USB connection, and it can record more than five hours of music on one 80-minute minidisc (using LP4 mode). It also uses Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which eliminates or reduces skipping during many active uses. The MZ-NE410 is compatible with the RealOne music player and the pressplay.com online music subscription service. It plays back ATRAC3 files and supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3, WMA, and WAV. The unit provides up to 56 hours of continuous playback on one AA battery.

The Easy Skip group-folder function helps organize songs into albums or groups. Once the music is transferred to the MZ-NE410, you can easily skip from group to group. Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-NE410 includes software for creatively organizing music. MoodLogic software goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles.

MoodLogic corrects file information by identifying and retitling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once the device is reconnected to a PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects to the Musiclub Web site, and provides information about the song and artist and links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists.

Note: The MZ-NE410's recording features and bundled software are not compatible with the MacOS operating system

Here's how you can use the included Sonic Stage Software to manage your music files:

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Bad software.......2007-02-20

SonicStage, the software used to upload music to the NetMD is extremely un-userfriendly. Quite frequently when i try to upload a mix of music, some songs will never make it on while others will be on the player 3 times!
I found that the main circular button used to change tracks/ pause/ and play, wears out quickly and you have to press it either very hard or multiple times to achieve the required action.

The only reason that this player gets 2 stars is because the NetMD runs off of a single AA battery making it great for long trips or plane rides, because you dont have to worry about finding a place to recharge the battery.

2 out of 5 stars Minidisc player.......2007-01-10

The seller was superb however the product and program with the minidisc recorder was substandard. Sony has added and deleted features from earlier versions so this generation is incompatable with the way I have previously used a minidisc recorder, namely recording through a microphone or line input. Sony now wants to limit the types of music that can be recorded so it is no longer feasable to record albums etc to the minidisc.

1 out of 5 stars Old stuff.......2006-08-03

We are entering the digital music area, and this device is archeology! There is no need for tapes or other music supports. The Sony software is a pain in the neck. Once you imported the files into the ATRAC format, you cannot even move them back in your computer. Sony is so concerned of protecting copyrights that the software would lock on you. The MD player is also heavy and bulky, and it will dislocate your shoulder if you carry it for jogging. I had two of them and after I bought a regular Mp3 player. Buy something else!

5 out of 5 stars Why do I like this product?.......2006-06-20

Because I'm 32, and was brought up on electronic audio devices which rerquired the user to insert a disc/record/tape into them in order to 'play' the information recorded therein. Or at least, that's my pet hypothesis.

This hypothesis gives me a reason as to why I dislike my I-pod: too much information without the effort of selecting something tangible from a rack/case and then using my fingers to place that piece of plastic into the appropriate playing device.

In any case, my NE410 was inexpensive (i.e., cheap). It's reliable. It's tough. And i reckon the sound quality is better than the I-pod mini and nano (which might not be saying much, but hey...)

5 out of 5 stars Such a good friend!.......2006-04-20

This player lasted me through many scary high school years. When it died, I was miserable.

Bad:
- bit bulkier than regular mp3 players.
- sonic stage was weird. Once I tried to put a file onto the player and the battery died. I did this twice until the checkout time remaining was 0. The file didn't even transfer and it thought I had burned the song three times.
- battery drains fast when burning. make sure you use rechargeable for your money, environment and your sanity.
- it's not totally waterproof. Keep it dry at all times.

Good:
- it's durable. I dropped it everywhere. Hardwood floors. Stairs. The pavement. Linoleum. Wooden desks. It kept playing like nothing happened. It developed scars and wear patterns on the finish (silver) but the screen never broke, and the functions/motor remained fully operational. It once got wet in the rain and stopped playing. I took it apart and let it dry for few days, put it pack together and it played like new. The second time when my water bottle opened in the bag the player was in it totally quit on me. It survived drowning. Once.
- It played in extreme weather conditions with no apparent battery wear.
- the battery life is amazing. While I switched players with my friends they'd say "okay, but don't wear out the battery".
But I never had to worry about the battery life. A fully charged battery would last in the very least five days. Once on a roadtrip I played it on full volume (30) for about five hours (with 20 min breaks every hour)and the next day the battery showed a 25% decrease in charge. Tuning out my parents and brother's music was never so much fun.
- it carries a lot. When at atrac3plus 64 kbps you can have about 70 songs on an 80 minute disc.
- your collection is forever expandable; you can get as many discs as you need.
-playlist making is ridiculously easy.
- you can reach into your pocket/bag/under your pillow and find the song you're looking for without looking at the screen. (you just need to remember the order your playlists are in so you can use the group button). And surely you agree those kids on the bus squinting at their player screen look inconvenienced.
- should your player die, you still have your collection on discs (which are super durable in themselves). Even if you get a hi-md player you can listen to the discs or reformat them to make them higher capacity.
Totally recommended. Plus, they're way cooler than mp3 players.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars QA doesn't seem to be Buffalo's strong point.......2007-12-25

I purchased this device to share media and act as a print server. I was able to configure the shared drive within minutes with no problem. Then came time to configure the print server. When attempting to login to the web-based GUI, I received an ambiguous software error. I attempted a little bit of troubleshooting, but given the error was cryptic, didn't really have a good starting point. So eventually I decide to cycle the power on the device. After powering the device back up, it sounded an audible alarm, and the red LED indicated a disk failure. This was within the first 4 hours of owning the product.

SO, I make my way to the Buffalo Tech website to find some troubleshooting. The only suggestions besides calling tech support were to run a disk check or reformat the disk using the client tool, BUT the client tool doesn't give either of those options, and it stopped responding half of the time anyway. I spent another 45 minutes or so reinstalling and trying different versions of the client software, nothing worked. Tried updating the device firmware, got the good old 0xFFFFFF0 error everytime. The 24/7 technical support didn't answer the phone, but a recording reminded by 25 times to have the product serial number ready.

Reading some of the on-line reviews, catastrophic failures within a short amount of time are common with these devices. The software quality is poor (typos, bad looking GUIs, cryptic error messages, and a lot of buttons that don't seem to do anything). Although it seems useful, I would not recommend.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from Buffalo products.......2007-12-01

I can't believe I'm writing this review, but if it helps someone avoid the headaches I've had, at least something good will come of my experience.

The biggest problem - Buffalo Technology has non-existant customer service. They don't answer calls, don't respond to emails, and don't respond to the internet form.

The drive worked well for 3 weeks. When it stopped working (I couldn't mount it), I contacted BT tech support via the online form and then by email. I received a response 1 week later telling me to upgrade the firmware and to reset the drive. I did both, to no avail. I tried contacting BT again via every imaginable way, with no response. The drive still doesn't work - $300 is a lot of money for garbage!

I went and bought a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition. It's not wireless, but it's fast and it works. The Linkstation Live drive is the worst electronic/computer tool I've ever bought. And with their total absence of technical support, Buffalo should go out of business.

5 out of 5 stars Link Station 500.......2007-11-02

Simplistic in setup...a definite bonus is you are new to computing. Though I have not explored what this can do for my wife's IPOD related music, it has given me what I purchased it for - dependable storage.

Most of the USB driven external hard drives do not adequately provide for cooling. The Link Station does. I can leave it running for days and days without worrying about it....and the gigabyte ethernet connection is a truly great thing. Fast, stable, dependable....that's what you are buying and getting with this unit.

1 out of 5 stars Failed in first 30 days. Bad customer support........2007-11-01

The system starting showing problems in the first 30 days. It would lock up and require power cycling to fix. Then it started displaying error codes. Called customer support (waited 30 minutes on first call before giving up, took 25 minutes on second call to get through). Was told to upgrade the firmware. Installation process failed and bricked the unit. Called CS again (another 30 minutes to get through) and was given an RMA number and told I would get an email with instructions. Several days later, no email. Sent email to CS and got a reply that I would get the authorization email shortly. Two days later, no authorization email. Sent another email and finally got the shipping instructions, etc. Not sure I'm even going to bother trying to install the new unit... if it ever gets here. Would *not* recommend Buffalo products.

3 out of 5 stars Better than some, so far... but hardly elegant.......2007-10-02

Well the Linkstation Live is up and running. It's not great - but it's better than say - managing a small Wintel server at home for simple common shared storage... it's also very quiet and low power. It's quite fast serving data over my gigabit connection, though for some reason management software (via either Firefox or Safari) is dog slow no matter what connection I use.

The web interface LOOKS clean and sharp - but it's actually pretty clunky... a bit of lipstick on a rather plain-looking pig. Still - it works alright - if slowly and in convoluted ways. At least it's a departure from the usual Windows-inspired management software that looks and feels as bad as it works... Still, the clunky interface makes setting up users and groups a pig - so it's not something you'd want to try for more than a few users (or with anything too complex in terms of permissions) Of course it's also limited to the dread Windows 12-characters, no-spaces naming convention for shares - frustrating step backwards for those who had so far avoided SMB sharing on their networks.

Most interesting discovery so far is that it will read and mount USB card readers and flash drives via the ports on the back. They are automatically shared (unprotected) to the network - which is good for some things I can think of - obviously bad for others. It appears that they can be secured, but it seems to be on a per-device basis (and maybe even a per-mount basis, can't tell yet).

It also would seem that it shouldn't have any trouble reading/mounting (and charging) the data partition of an iPod. Since I can't find my USB iPod cable right now, I haven't tried yet. (I'm not suggesting that the resulting share could sync with iTunes, but it might make a nice remote charging station and mounting the data to the network could be useful)

The iTunes support is pretty good - although again, lacking in the details. All music files in the iTunes shared folder on the Linkstation (no matter how they are organized) have to appear in one giant shared folder in iTunes. It would be nice to have each subfolder share as a separate playlist... OR to allow multiple iTunes shared folders (you can have only one).

It seems very flexible and powerful under the hood - only limited by a rather dire control interface and sparse instructions (There are many pages in the manual, they just don't say much you couldn't figure out on your own). I'm curious to see if it can share an all-in-one scanner/printer combo over the USB port. I'm sure the printer would be fine - but most new scanners share nicely as well, so that's a future experiment. Stay tuned.

Over all - not bad. Not spectacular either. Better than several others I've encountered, and it's still easier for the average user than setting up a dedicated Linux/Windows/MacOS server at home. A solid 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars cool idea, but just ok.......2007-11-19

Actually I do love the radio, but as the first reviewer mentioned, adding stations not already in the Phoenix database is inpossible, at least for me--I'm zero for ten at that skill now. And, the customer support is non-existent. I've written three emails to support, and so far, no acknowledgement of any of them.

4 out of 5 stars Very Pleased ! Good features........2007-11-12

Ok, first I am a bit of a tech nerd so setup on most items is easy for me.
But this was very easy to setup on my wireless even with WPA security.
The menus and steps from power up on are logical and intuitive (rare on these type of devices).
In less than 20min I had streaming radio from the pre-loaded presets and the unit found my music server in the house too!
The unit feels solid and sounds great for voice (talk radio and podcasts).
Not bad for music but the audio out jack is available and sounds good with headphones and really good on the stereo !
Customizing the access using the web site from Phoenix is good but could use a little more on line instruction for new users.

Great deal ! only drawback no remote !!! the only lacking feature.

I am going to buy more of these for other rooms.
