Best Gamepad Ever........2007-09-20
I've had my Sidewinder USB Gamepad for 8 years, and without a doubt it is the most durable, efficient, and reliable gamepad I have ever seen. Having grown up playing mostly console games I find using the gamepad for PC games has a much more natural feel than using a keyboard and mouse. It has lasted through nearly 1500 hours of gameplay over the past 8 years and has only started to show its age in the last few weeks. I've heard that Microsoft will begin relaunching the Sidewinder line and I can only hope that the USB Gamepad will be in the line-up.
One of the best, but not perfect........2007-01-14
I've had this pad for a few years already. I have never had a problem with any of the buttons not working or wearing out. For $15 it's very durable. I have tried other pads and none of them are as good as, in my opinion, this one. It is very comfortable in your hands, and you just plug it in and play. With some other pads the USB would fall out with just a tap, but with the SideWinder the USB stays in until you pull it out. I only have two complaints. First the top three buttons are smaller than the bottom three, so i accidentally pushed the wrong button sometimes. Also, as is common with gamepads, the D-pad is round, so the directions aren't always precise. Sometimes I'ld be playing Street Fighter or a fighting game and I'ld push down to duck, but it would read me pushing down and forward and i'ld take a hit. It's still one of the best gamepads out there that i have tried. If you can find it at a Wal-Mart it sells for about $15. That's cheaper than most, and it's a good deal.
Absolutely what I expected........2006-06-24
I bought this controller at a wal mart about a year back (roughly) And it's been pretty good for the $15 I paid for it. Now that it's showing its age, the down button doesn't work so well, but I didn't expect it to last forever. Worth $15, but not much more.

nothing better for tight,precise control of lara croft.i have 4 of them all excellent for 3rd person games.my highest recommendation.my recommendation is only for this model.the 4 button on right side are junk,no matter who makes em.
D-Pad is not aligned properly.......2005-07-06
I've noticed that other 2D-fighter fans have already complained that this controller provides very poor control, but they may have misdiagnosed the cause.
The buttons on the right side are not placed straight, they are on a 45 degree or so angle because your thumb also point in a similar angle when holding the controller. This makes your thumb relatively perpendicular with the buttons. Good design. The problem is that they forgot to do that on the other side with the D-pad. The D-pad is positioned straight up, not slanted like the face buttons. This renders the D-pad utterly useless in game which require you to use the D-pad quickly in a specific sequence, such as in fighting games. The result is that the Up-right groove feels like it should be the Up button, and the Left-Down groove feels like it should be the Down button. The thing that baffles me even more is that the cheaper Sidewinder with fewer buttons has the D-pad aligned correctly and works great. Go figure.
No matter how I try I cannot get my thumb to align properly and confortably with the D-pad.

Anyone looking to bring a little console feel to their PC should check out the Microsoft SideWinder Gamepad Pro. This sturdily constructed silver boomerang of a gamepad can endure many hours of healthy abuse and still supply quick and responsive controls.
One of the great things about the SideWinder series has always been the ergonomics of the joysticks, and the SideWinder Gamepad is no exception. The grip is comfortable, and the buttons and directional pad are all within thumb's reach. The USB interface makes setting up the gamepad a snap, and the SideWinder configuration software lets you set up your gamepad to operate differently for each game installed on your system with the SideWinder game profiles.
The SideWinder Gamepad Pro also includes a shift button, which allows you to program twice the amount of functions per button. About the only thing we didn't like about it was its D-pad design. It felt a little too mushy, and had a lack of tactility to it. It also had a tendency to wiggle around, causing our fingers to slip a bit. The Microsoft Sidewinder is the "BEST USB CONTROLLER" for PC users that play Emulation games and PC games on their computer. I have tried others such as WINGMAN, LOGITECH, GAMEPAD PRO, MADCATS, and other Gravis controllers, and including the new USB controllers out today, the Microsoft Sidewinder is still the best controller out there! Not only does the Sidewinder offer complete quick response action, and high performance, but the buttons and the axis controls last forever. As long as you maintain and keep them clean and in great working condition, your Sidewinder will last forever. The sidewinder has the perfect feel similar to a game console controller such as the Playstation controller, and the Playstation 3. For those Emulation fanatics, I highly recommend this product for multi-gaming on your computer for MAME and NEO GEO Emulators.
Also a great controller for you hardcore PC-game players, and to the sport freaks out there as well.

Shooting button get stuck.......2002-11-02
After having my gamepad one year, my shooting button got stuck. So I can't play anymore with it. I even tried to lubricate it, but does not work.
Playing with the gamepad did not hurt my hand, but it could be more confortable.
Durability is a problem!
Bulky and cumbersome.......2000-12-27
This isn't that bad of a gamepad. Some of the things I would like to see improved with a newer model would be a much better directional button. This one feels terrible and it is sometimes hard to control movements in certain games. It also could be a little thinner. This one is quite bulkly despite what the picture shows. Everything else is fine though. Its a good cheap controller which is easy to hook up, and has worked with every game I've played.

Positives: The controller is very reasonbly priced for something with six buttons and two triggers. Whether or not you agree that Microsoft is a monopoly, the fact of the matter is this controller works extremely well with my Windows system, is a cinch to set up (Win 98 automatically detects the controller when I plug it in my USB), and has great software to go along with it. Using the Sidewinder Software, you can set up various profiles for a wide variety of games. In other words, you are setting a default controller configuration before you even step in to the game. The pad is generally comfortable in your hands.
Negatives: As other reviews have pointed out, the directional pad is somewhat poor. I doesn't take me in wrong directions, it just feels flimsy and looks like it could cause some problems with a great deal of use. You may also be able to see a button to the bottom right of the directional pad. I don't know what that is supposed to do (it has an arrow) but in most games it is your 9th button and it is terribly placed.
My recommendation is pick this up for a cheap, 6-button controller with no hassles installing. If you've got some more cash to spend and you are a serious gamer, research other alternatives. Logitech makes a good high-end pad.
Not a good analog gamepad.......2000-10-15
I bought this controller because of the highly tauted "dual" nature (digital and analog). The gamepad works fine in d-pad mode, but really... as an analog controller. You have to press down really hard to get any precision movement and I wound up not using the feature because it gave me a sore thumb. I can't believe Microsoft didn't test this out with at least two people before marketing it.
The control panel software for programming buttons works great and is easy to use. But doesn't make up for the horrid analog performance.
If you just want a d-pad, there are cheaper devices than this one. If you want a dual controller, there has to be something better.
