3 out of 5 stars Cheap, works with emulators. Good starting pad........2006-01-23

This is the common gamepad among emu-geeks. Its got the basics, 4 candy colored buttons, start and select (where they SHOULD be) and shoulder buttons, but it has two more... hmm, I'd map those to the Save State / Load State function in ZSNES (yes, I'm a cheater). The d-pad is odd though, its a little lumpy, not like the old "cross" from the Snes/Sega days and there's a screw-whole for some kinda stick add-on. That doesn't magically make it analog though. This is a fine pad for just ONE thing, but if you wanna do more than just NES or SNES emu's, get a Lik-Sang adapter and dig any standard or aftermarket PS1/PS2 pad outta the closet. Also download Joy2Key (its free) and you'll be able to map keys to buttons and mouse to analog stick. And yes, you CAN play PSX games on PC... IF your machine is fast enough. The adapter also supports the Rumble Motors in your Dual Shock pads.

3 out of 5 stars Gets the job done.......2004-01-26

Recently I aquired a good deal of older computer games. This sounds like a very good thing. but there's a huge problem - I was forced to control these games with a keyboard. And as you may know, playing video games with a keyboard is nightmarish. I needed a controller. So, I purchased this one. How well does it work? Read on and find out.

PROS:
-The controller is, rather obviously, modelled after the Playstation controller. In my opinion the PSX has the best controller of any gaming console, so they picked a good one to copy.
-There is a detachable joystick that attaches into the center of the directional control pad.
-The cord is quite long, so you'll never have to worry about having too little of it.
-This is about as good a controller as you can get in the $15-$20 range.

CONS:
-The directional control pad was done rather poorly. Because the pad itself has the diagonal directions on it, I can end up being forced into veering off course in my games. The detachable joystick helps correct this problem somewhat, but not entirely.
-Getting the joystick in the hole can be a pain.
-The cord is TOO LONG! Honestly, do you know anyone that sits THAT far back from their computer? I didn't think so.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good gaming pad if you're not willing to spend too much. I personally recommend shelling out the extra cash and getting a higher quality model, but this one will work if you're on a budget.

3 out of 5 stars OK but you can do better than this..........2004-01-10

This is an inexpensive, lightweight PS2-style programmable gamepad that would otherwise be a great value were it not for the extremely shoddy directional pad.

I own two of these gamepads for about 3 years (which shows its durable) and they have fared well for emulator games and games such as Madden and High Heat Baseball where precise directional control is not crucial. But the d-pad makes this almost unusable for 3D and racing games.

The d-pad is slotted to the diagonals which tends to push you diagonally when you want to go up, down, left, or right. This makes it difficult to go in a straight line which can kill you in certain games where accuracy and speed are important. Using the mini-joystick can help control a little better. The controller is kinda small so it may not fit well in big hands. Its instant and easy setup without any software makes it a true plug-n-play device.

For the $10-$15 price range you can't beat this, but do yourself a favor and spend another $5 to $10 more if you can for a better quality gamepad with ergonomic controls, trigger buttons, and force feedback.

2 out of 5 stars craptacular, and i mean that from the bottom of my heart.......2003-12-28

I bought this gamepad because it was inexpensive, and I guess I got what I paid for. The d-pad is lousy, like everyone says. I can't get it to calibrate correctly with my SNES emulator. It works, but not with the precision that Gaming Pros demand. Oh, and the chintzy little screw-on joystick broke within one hour of use. Sigh.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality, from a company I trust...........2003-08-25

On my visit to the computer store, where I planned to buy one, I looked at others. Others had styling, cool technology, and the price was almost $20 more! I found the Gravis and bought it anyway. It has great quality from a company I trust. What more do you want in a gamepad? Many people say that the cords will bother you when playing but it doesn't. Actually, sometimes I feel like it is the wireless Logitech one that they were selling for $50.

I play NBA Live 2003 with it, and it works fine. The detachable joystick handle makes the directional pad feel like a joystick with the extra buttons. It has 10 action buttons and each one works fine. Usually, games will pick out about 2 gamepads or joysticks you can buy (popular, big brand names, found in almost every computer store), which my NBA Live did, but if it doesn't, it will probably work for any EA Sports game.

Pros-

Quality from a company that people trust
Not to advanced
Detachable joystick handle for directional pad

Cons-

Looks kinda boring
For very fast play, this is not the gamepad to use
Make sure you know the controls, or you are gonna lose the game

Have fun.. at least I hope you do. If you have Windows XP, you just attach the USB thing into the slot and it installs within the minute. Then go to your EaSports game (if you have one) and click on 'Options', Game Controllers and pick the Gamepad pro.

It is fun, if you know how to use it, and very effective. More effective than the joysticks and PS2.... so now you have your very own game console (computer with gamepad), just not a two player.

3 out of 5 stars Durable and Cheap, just overshadowed by new Technology.......2007-11-20

After the 1 review below I just had to create my own !!

I had one of these for almost 10 years and it worked fine for all the games that I tried it on.

Here's a rundown of the Pluses:
-------------------------------
- It was superbly compatible with all DOS games at the time and maintained compatibility all the way up to Win98-SE. IF your PC still has a Joystick port (which I doubt) I bet It'll work fine (drivers are included in Win2000/XP).

- Aside from a top-brand console pad (e.g. Nintendo), it's the best D-pad I've played with (IMHO the top 3 are SNES pad, original NES pad and the PS's Dualshock / Dualshock 2 D-pad). It could actually be used for Fighting games (i.e. Street Fighter2, etc.) even though it only has 4 buttons. Anyone who has played Fighting games will know that the D-pad can be MUCH more crucial than not being able to use the weakest attack of your character.

- Also, it has been one of my longest-lasting gaming controllers, withstanding years of abuse with the D-pad and buttons still working fine.

- At this point, the price. You can probably grab it for next to nothing. I've even seen it at flea-markets.

Now the Cons:
-------------
- OOOLLLLLDDD technology !!! (obviously). This thing came out way back when a PC could handle 2 joysticks with 2 buttons each, so the fact that this pad was using 4 buttons was a BIG deal (by taking over the "possible" 2nd joystick's buttons). As mentioned above it requires a 15-pin Joystick port which almost no existing Desktop has let alone any laptop that I've seen since 1997!

- Needless to say, No USB support.

- Lack of buttons (only 4).

Final comment:
--------------
This WAS an awesome pad and if you find it and have the required joystick port could probably provide a pretty decent gaming experience for only a few cents. It was one of the first REAL gamepads for the PC so you'd get a part of gaming history !!

I only stopped using it because I was able to connect my old SNES pad directly to the PC (only ~7 Diodes) and now I have adapters for the N64 pad (only good for N64 emulation really), PS1/PS2 (great for general gaming) and will (probably) end up buying Microsoft's PC hookup for the X360's wireless controllers (not for fighting games though).

BTW, I recently TRIED buying a USB PC controller (PS2 Dualshock2 knock-off) and STILL the BIG headache for these companies is getting the D-Pad juuuussst right... awesome how Gravis had it down in 1991 !

HTH

1 out of 5 stars Wow... its so... limitted........2006-01-23

No Start and Select, no L and R's. Just 4 buttons and a D-pad. And what's that little switch? Oh, it flips it so you can use it upside down (makes the color buttons be directions) I had one of these for a while and I hated it. Nice for two button NES game emulation, but not SNES or anything else. Get a Lik-Sang adapter and use your old Playstation 1 or 2 pads instead. Get Joy2Key and you can do keyboard and mouse mapping like a Saitek pad.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE D-pad.......2006-01-28

This gamepad has one of the worst D-pads I have ever used. Not only does the pseudo-analog functionality make it difficult to use in games that expect digital controls, the design of the stick is such that the pad gets stuck in the housing if you push it too far. Don't bother.

1 out of 5 stars This is garbage........2006-01-23

A friend gave me this pad before considering throwing it in the trash. After two days of having it, >I < threw it in the trash. The D-pad has got to be the worst thing about it, its a D-pad that wants to be an analog stick. So its never fast enough on oldskool games because of all its "give." It has the right ammount of buttons (Start, Select, L & R) but that D-pad is soooo hoakie. I'd rather have an old Turbo Touch 360's flat touch panel from my Nintendo days. Atleast those actually worked. If you want console quality but on your PC, don't bother with flimsy copycat PC gamepads because they ALL suck. Get a Lik-Sang adapter and you can use PS1&2 pads on your PC! Download Joy2Key and you'll have awesome Keyboard and Mouse mapping software just like any Saitek or Logitech pad.

1 out of 5 stars Calling this a "controller" is a dirty lie.......2004-10-11

This is by far the WORST controller I have ever used. The calibration is terrible, and the little "Precision" button is a joke. While playing Final Fantasy VII (with an emulator), my characters have attacked each other just because of the controller's sporadic nature. The up directional button doesn't work at all--my characters just end up going down instead--and the cursor goes crazy without even touching it. Please do not waste your hard-earned money on this device. You will be terribly disappointed. Today I went out and bought a Logitech Dual Action Gamepad for the same price at Best Buy. We'll see how that goes.

2 out of 5 stars Guess what...poor calibration.......2004-03-23

I bought a Gravis Gamepad Pro about 7-8 years ago and it is still going strong to this day. My 6 year old and I have been playing Wakeboarding unleashed and knew we needed another gamepad. So this past weekend I bought the Gravis Eliminator Gamepad Pro. Unfortunately, I cannot calibrate it correctly. It keeps wandering to the left or right.

When i called Gravis and asked, the lady with the foreign accent at tech support tried telling me that it was the game and that I needed to try another. I told her this was my only game. She said then that a technician would call me back.... still waiting.

It's going back to the store.

2 out of 5 stars Dpad gets stuck.......2004-01-29

I bought this because I liked the feel and flexibility of the dpad, but I took the first one back because the dpad got stuck. Now my second unit has the same problem, after several months of use.

1 out of 5 stars Ugly, its limited, and its JUNK!.......2006-01-23

The run of the mill SNES pad knock-offs' Gravis makes are better than this garbage. Where's Start and Select? And those shoulder buttons? HA! They're only turbo's for B and A. This is crap, might as well be made by Interact. If you want REAL console ruggedness for your PC, get a Lik-Sang adapter and dig any standard or aftermarket PS1/PS2 pad out of your closet. Download Joy2Key (its free) and you'll have the same Keyboard/Mouse mapping abilities as any Saitek or Logitech PC controller with the familiarity and "built to last-ness" of the Playstation pad.

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2004-01-01

I picked up this gamepad because of the low price, and let me tell you: it's not worth the money no matter how cheap you can get it. What good is a gamepad if you can't make a player in EA Sports's FIFA 2003 run in a straight line? My soccer players looks like they smoked up, shot some drugs, and then blindfolded themselves before taking the field. It's actually rather amusing, but for all the wrong reasons.

Stay away from this pad, unless you get a masochistic high out of wearing the skin off your left thumb while trying to make sensical moves that are only sporadically rewarded with the proper outcome. I'm giving it one star only because this review system won't allow me to give it less.

    1 out of 5 stars junk.......2002-08-03

I just wanted a nice cheap gamepad to play emulator games with. I don't need the rumbling, the analog controls; just something simple. This device is terrible. The two buttons on the top are just rapid fire buttons for two of the colored ones. The directional pad is completly out of wack; it takes all kinds of Zen meditation to guide a character in a straight line. Save your money. Do not buy this. I was like you once.

    4 out of 5 stars It's 9 BUCKS.......2001-12-24

This is the cheapest PC gaming controller on the market. It's easy to use, and it works. In 1990 we thought the even less equipped two button nintendo game pad was the best thing since sliced bread. Let's not get greedy for 9 bucks. If you want a good controller for occassional gaming, go for this one. I have it, and I love it. It took me 3 trips to COMPUSA for it to finally be in stock, so apparently I'm not the only one. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it, Use it, Like it........2001-05-01

My last gamepad broke. Most of the newer gamepads don't always work with older DOS programs. This one worked exactly as I hoped it would. Better get 'em while they last.
