5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Noice Cancelling.......2007-12-26

Just received this headphones as an x-mas gift. Overall fantastic size/weight, I will easily carry these in my backpack, especially in the nice hard case included. I'm a big fan of the over the ear design, but for the majority of consumers this may be an issue. The noise-canceling function works beautifully, as the product info states only 1 AAA battery needed, none required for regular headphone usage. I consider this a major selling point as I do not want a non-functional set of headphones in the event of a dead battery. Altogether I would recommend this pair to anyone looking for a quality set of portable noise canceling headphones.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, comfortable, great value for money.......2007-11-07

I travel fairly frequently on work and the long international flights were getting to me. I'd originally bought a Solitude Plane Quiet II headset which I was fairly happy with except for:
1. Quite tight around the head, difficult to wear for long periods of time.
2. Good sound quality, particularly bass, but an annoying hiss and missing treble and highs during audio playback.
3. Fairly heavy owing to needing 2 AAA batteries.

A colleague at work bought the JVCs and we did a comparison. Initially I was skeptical because my Solitudes were around the ear vs the JVCs which are over the ear. We went into a very noisy server room to do the test and I have to say the performance of the JVCs was astoundingly good.
All three issues that I had with the Solitudes were absent.
1. Extremely comfortable and light. Great build quality.
2. Even better noise canceling performance despite the over the ear design. Even with the active noise cancellation off, merely wearing the headset provides good sound insulation.
3. Great sound quality, very balanced bass and treble, zero hiss.
4. Better battery life than the Solitudes despite needing only one battery.

In addition, the JVCs have some of the benefits of the Solitudes over the industry's most famous headset (Bose).
1. Conventional cable (not proprietary like Bose).
2. Audio passthrough even when the battery dies.
3. Single AAA battery, non-proprietary (if you forget to charge your proprietary Bose battery, your headphones are dead).
4. Great price/value tradeoff compared to the Bose QCII or III.

The only negatives of the JVCs I could perceive are:
1. No volume dial control on the headset itself which is less of a convenience as you now have to turn down the volume from your ipod or computer rather than just reaching up and dialing down.
2. Headphone cable is fairly short (43in) so its difficult (not impossible) to use it with home stereo equipment.
3. Replacing the battery is a bit difficult and involves popping the right earpiece out.

1 out of 5 stars No active noise reduction AT ALL! .......2007-12-22

I just brought these home from Staples. I cannot see how these can be claimed to have ACTIVE noise reduction. The only thing they do is slightly amplify the source sound. The classic test, to turn them on with some background noise but no signal, reveals ZERO noise reduction. There does not even appear to be a microphone anywhere in the system that could detect and correct for noise. Nothing you do with the battery unit (moving closer or further from noise sources, for example, indicates that ANYTHING is happening at all. The product is apparently falsely presented. The flexible plastic earbuds are reasonably good, and block sound almost as well as my KOSS Sparkplug earbuds, but there is NO evidence of any active noise cancelling at all. I plan to return them.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointed.......2007-12-18

I am very disappointed in this product. When I first got the package, the left earbud was very low volume compared to the right. In mere hours, both stopped working (I did not put them through extraordinary strain). Even if it had continued to work the battery pack in the middle of the cord is very awkward. I strongly recommend against purchasing this product.

1 out of 5 stars Average User.......2007-12-12

I didn't expect great noise canceling from these headphones, but I did expect them to be "honest" about the way they went about noise canceling. In this case when you switch the noise canceling feature on it simply sounds like the sound was run through an amplifier--the music you are listening to gets louder, but that's it.

1 out of 5 stars Pass on it.......2007-12-07

Perhaps I got a bad unit, but after two months of light use one of the channels faded almost to nothing permanently (tested with new batteries, different unit, etc.). While it was working it seemed to be okay- not as good as my Kensington noise canceling headphones, but not bad. Most of the noise-canceling occurs because it acts as an earplug. The active noise-canceling effectiveness is marginal. I was also a bit annoyed that the wires were always getting tangled and the cord to the n.c. unit is just a couple inches too short to fit in my jacket pocket without pulling on the earbuds. I would have given it 3 stars had it kept working properly.

4 out of 5 stars great earphones.......2007-12-02

This is my 20 th pair of earphones already, i use theme mostly to ride my bikes (harley & ktm enduro), so far these are by far the best i've ever owned, they are the only one's you can actually hear something riding over 60 mph with a small helmet in a very loud harley. the down side (and this is why i dindn't gave them 5 stars) is the big noise cancelling device, so i just place it in a pocket and problem solved. i'm very happy good for me that i bought two pairs, you know, just in case.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was hoping for.......2007-08-24

I'm impressed with this little thing. The case is well-made and has a very solid feel. The Nano fits perfectly into the skin and into the MiniBlaster. I didn't have difficulties with the fit like others mentioned. Getting the Nano out takes some pushing, but that's the way it should be. You don't want it falling out on it's own and hitting the pavement. All the Nano controls are accessible. The front, circular control (volume/scroll) works fine through a silicon skin and is very protected.

The reason we buy this thing is for sound and size. Size and weight are impressively minimal. You won't beat that anywhere. As for sound, it's not a home entertainment center or a Bose IPod system - it's a tiny little device that offers maximum portability. If you can bring your Bose system along with you, then do it. If you need something small and more portable, then read on.

The sound has a distinct clarity. Mids to highs are crisp and well separated. What you loose is bass. It's attenuated, but not dull or muddy. I wasn't expecting strong bass with a frequency response of 450Hz to 20KHz. It's not built for it and shouldn't be expected.

It's made, as others have said, for you and a couple of friends in an environment without too much ambient noise. If you are looking for a system that you can play at a beech party with a big group of friends, keep looking, because this isn't it. Too many voices chatting away will drown this little thing out.

In a reasonably quiet room or out on the trail, you get enough volume to really enjoy the music. It's loud enough to hear the detail in the sound. It even gets too loud for conversations and has to be turned down. Don't get me wrong, the neighbors won't be calling or stomping on the floor. It has what it needs to fill the niche that it's designed for.

I personally like the sound with the EQ set to "Small Speakers" - seems like a good balance for Classic Rock which I tend to listen to the most.

If you want a small, light and very portable speaker system to free you from headphones and make portable music a social experience between friends again, then you are onto something.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great for use while traveling.......2007-08-11

I wanted to be able to listen to podcasts and my own music while commuting and so first purchased (for $80) an FM converter that plugged into the lighter and my iPod and then matched an unused frequency to play what was on the iPod. The sound wasn't great and it changed depending on where I was driving. I spent a lot of time trying to find the right static frequency and match it with the device. In the short time that I tried it out I had to switch frequencies twice.

So, I looked for a speaker. I decided that it wouldn't be a disaster to buy something at this price to try even if it didn't work great. It was what I was looking for! I can use it in the car and also other places where I want to play what is on my ipod so that others can hear. It is not great sound quality, but it is much better than what I was getting with the FM converter and much easier. I can either use batteries or the AC adaptor (I already have a device that converts the cigarette lighter into AC power).

It is a great solution for what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2007-07-26

I recommend this product over similar products that are outrageously expensive. Powerful sound for it's size and easy to use. Great value.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, under 15 bucks including shipping!.......2007-07-04

Don't expect too much bass out of -any- tiny speakers but as a way to turn your nano into a sort of 21st century "transistor radio" equivalent with stereo audio and a better sound quality, this little thing is superb. Talk radio podcasts are delivered very clearly and music can be enjoyed to an extent especially if you choose an appropriate EQ setting on your nano. Volume capability is decent, just don't expect to entertain an audience bigger than about two or three. Battery life is good for the 4x AAA batteries.

3 out of 5 stars JLab Audio.......2007-06-08

The sound is good from the Miniblaster, but getting my Ipod in and out of it is a real chore!! It is very difficult to do. It not only is very hard to place in the miniblaster, but getting it out is even worse. I like the size of it as it doesn't take up a lot of room when I place it on the counter. Just difficult to use. It is also hard to adjust the volume with the "skin" on it.

Jabra C820s Active Noise Rejection Headphone

Product Description

The Jabra C820s stereo music headphones are specially designed for music lovers who want to make the most of their music wherever they are. The Jabra C820s are high performance headphones that deliver full-range, compensated sound through high quality speakers guaranteeing premium audio, straight from your mobile phone or other music source. Hear the music, not the noise thanks to one of the best ambient noise cancellation systems on the market. The headphones incorporate Active Noise Cancellation technology, offering one of the best ambient noise cancellation systems available today. So, no matter how noisy your environment is, you can still enjoy your music undisturbed. How does Active Noise Cancellation work? Anti-noise is an inverted copy of the noise itself. When anti-noise is combined with the original sound disturbance it results in a lower level of noise perceived by the human ear. The Jabra C820S comes with all the connections you need to use it in virtually any environment. For use on the move, the Jabra C820s folds flat for compact and easy transportation. It comes equipped with a standard universal 2.5mm jack for mobile phones and a 3.5mm jack for music players. For use in an airplane, the flat-pack carrying case also contains a 2-prong airline adapter. For use at home, a 6.5mm audio adapter is included, or you can use the standard 3.5mm jack. Note: These headphones are nearly identical in performance to Bose QuietComfort headphones for a much lower price!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't use rechargeable batteries. Simply unacceptable........2007-12-22

The manual says "Caution, always use AAA non-rechargeable batteries." Rechargeable batteries that I've tried don't work in these headphones.

Forcing people to pay 100 times as much on non-rechargeable batteries and put tons of alkaline batteries into landfill is disgraceful. No matter how well the headphones function, this is just unacceptably poor design.

4 out of 5 stars Almost there, but not quite Bose.......2007-12-20

I flew from Miami to Mexico City and back again with these headphones, watching video off of my Archos 604 media player while intermittently plugging them into the armrest to watch "Eye On American." I have taken many International flights in first class, during which your are "loaned" a set of Bose headphones for your entertainment pleasure. I cannot say that these headphones do as good a job as the Bose, but they do come darn close.

I did notice that although the Jabra headphones cut way back on engine noise, I could clearly hear people talking in the background (particularly those annoying passengers that jabber away on their cell phone only, I am convinced, to irritate me). With the Bose, I heard less engine noise and could only barely, barely make out anyone talking in the background. But, as other have mentioned, you do have to factor in the price difference.

As far as a rating goes when only quality is considered, I give the Bose an A+ and the Jabra C820s an A-. You would have to make the decision for yourself if it is worth forking over the extra cash to get that little bit of extra performance from the Bose headphones.

As a final comment, even though you might find a better deal on them elsewhere, I recommend you try to stay with Amazon.com for your purchase. Yes, you can sometimes [...] but you are likely to discover that the customer service, the return policy, and the lower price guarantee are sorely lacking in comparison to Amazon.com. In my opinion, it is worth spending a bit extra for the sterling customer service you get from Amazon. (no, I don't work there!)

Anyway, I hope this review helps you to some degree in your purchasing decision.

5 out of 5 stars Good price, good sound, great buy........2007-12-14

These are excellent headphones. Although I've never owned a pair of Bose Noise-Cancelling headphones, I've tried them from time to time and the Jabras compare favorably. These will definitely sound better than the earbuds most MP3 players come with. I use my Jabras with a SanDisk Sansa m240 and I'm pleased with the sound I'm getting (and ecstatic with the price I paid). The headphones will also continue to work when the NR is turned off so there are no worries if the battery dies (these take one AAA for roughly 50 hours of use). I enjoy using these so much that I've bought a second pair for my brother.

Now, in my (limited) experience, noise reduction always comes with a hiss that is especially noticable when there is either too little noise to cancel or no sound is pumping through the headphones. This set is no exception. However, one gets used to the hiss and the slight pressure that noise reduction technology creates rather quickly. I use these in a somewhat-noisy office and can assure any potential buyers that the Jabras are effective in cancelling a lot of office chatter and ventilation noise. Co-workers have been able to sneak up behind me with regularity so be forewarned: you will not be prepared if your manager stops by your cubicle and taps you on the shoulder while you are browsing the sports pages instead of working.

4 out of 5 stars Hiss with noise cancelling on.......2007-12-13

It seems to me that the hiss is centered in the higher frequencies - 16K and up - and most people don't hear well that far, so it does not bother them. If you are in that category - its an awesome product for you.

With the noise cancelling turned off - there is no hiss. With NC on, it even dulls the sound of a noisy vaccum cleaner so much that you don't have to turn up the volume on whatever it is you are listening to while vaccuming.

In noisy environments - like an airplane - the hiss is not noticeable. Its noise cancelling really works and could be up there with the best of the breed. I am yet to compare their NC ability with the Bose.

The cans are adjustable, not heavy, fit well and built well. Plus you can use them without turning NC on (unlike the Bose). I no longer have my earlier pair of Panasonic NC's to compare them to - but these definitely seem better - especially in terms of sound fidelity.

I'd buy them again in a flash.

5 out of 5 stars Poor Man BOSE.......2007-12-04

I am listening to these right now, at home and there is no hiss sound as I read from another reviewer. The sound quality on this is comparable to the NC BOSE, which I tried but couldn't bring myself to buy them for their ridiculous asking price. Take into consideration that the source of the sound, the mp3, stereo, etc.. has a lot to do with the quality of the sound you will get from these or any headphone. I am going on a long trip in a few days and will come back to write about the noise canceling in the plane. I was lucky and was able to get these for less than sixty bucks at woot.com, as a matter of fact, I got 3, one for my girlfriend, one for me and the last, might get sold or given away to a lucky nephew.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound quality for such a tiny package.......2007-11-05

I bought the miniblaster portable speaker in December 2006. I was amazed at the quality of the sound for such tiny speakers. Now, almost one year later, the speakers are still going strong. If you are looking for good quality pocket size speakers, these are a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Great iPod Speaker........2007-08-08

Best bang for the buck...i read all the reviews. just buy it. you can't beat $15 shipped. it gets the job done.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Company.......2007-06-11

My 11 year old daughter saved her $$ and did some on line research and ended up buying these. She loved them for the size which allowed her to take them into bed, on the bus etc. The audio in my opinion was "OK", but she was very happy.

We had bought them along with their noise reducing ear buds which I use while traveling in planes. I can wear them x- country very comfortably

Unfortunately we had technical problems and contacted JBL. I happened to email them on a Sunday afternoon and in about 15 minutes a real person (Josh) responded. A real person.... on a Sunday!!

He resolved the issue- which ultimately required a warranty replacement.

I cannot say enough good things about this company and Josh. I woudl buy their products again without hesitation

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment........2007-05-26

On my first foray into looking for the perfect mini speaker for my Ipod, I bought the Aiptek Mist for Nano (not realizing it only works with Gen 2 Nano)---boy, was it a cute little thing. Disappointed they don't make that product for Gen 1 Nanos, I searched Amazon for the perfect replacement mini speaker that would work with my Nano Gen 1. The JLab Miniblaster had 4 stars. Folks, speak up, because I cannot be the only one who was shocked by the low quality of this product!!

*When I first plugged it in, you couldn't hear anything because of interference from my TV remote!

*When I finally heard sound it was fuzzy at best and never got much better

*The volume level is only a smidgen better than what I can hear through my earbuds when they are out of my ears!

I read and re-read the direction and am convinced I did everything properly. I even tried it with battery power only, in the house, out of the house. No luck. This is a lousy product and I am giving it one star. This is being shipped back today.

3 out of 5 stars Decent sound but poor quality.........2007-11-13

I got these at staples with a rebate for a great price. The sound quality is ok for the price, but soon after the headphones began falling apart. first the cover to the battery compartment kept falling off until I put some scotch tape to hold it in place. Then one of the earpiece came apart because the pin holding them fell out. And this with light use I never took them out of my house. Now i have returned them to Targus hoping they will replace them. If you paid full price this is not a good deal since these headphones are poorly built.

2 out of 5 stars Performance ok, durability not good........2007-08-20

Have had these headphones for about 2 years, but used very rarely, maybe about 10-15 times total. Main issue is that these are big and take up too much space to put in my briefcase. Performance is ok, though sometimes there's a crackling sound just touching the control where you turn on/off noise canceling. Durability is a big problem...during my last trip, the cover over the ear cup foams literally went to pieces. I had to pick the pieces out of of my hair and clothing in the middle of the flight.

5 out of 5 stars Good deal.......2007-07-10

I got the headphones at a great price, less than 1/3 what I paid in a retail store to buy my first pair. The noise reduction is quite good. I wouldn't personally spend hundreds of dollars for "top of the line" when this set works just fine, in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the price - needs a volume control.......2007-05-13

I was very surprised at the noise canceling capability of these earphones. The big drawback is that there is no volume control on the earphones so you are dependent on the devices (or worse yet the airline seat control) for volume adjustment. My PDA/MP3 player's volume resolution is very poor so the sound is either too loud or too soft. However as strict noise canceling, at least in airplanes, they seem to work very well.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing - poor design.......2006-04-29

Shortly after I began using my head phones, I noticed the wiring at the hinges was starting to crack the wire coating. Within 8 months of not-very-heavy use, the left earpiece wouldn't work any more. Guess I can't send them back, since I didn't keep the box!

Also, the battery pack is in an annoying place - every time I turn my head, it catches on something.

The noise reduction is minimal. The ear pieces do not set comfortably on the ear. Generally not a good product.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the noise canceling?.......2007-08-10

Decent sound and comfortable fit, however all the noise canceling feature does, is add hiss.

I looked at the turtle beach website to make sure I was not doing anything wrong, but the only relevant advice for me was the following

"Q: My Turtle Beach buds don't cancel noise. I also own the $xxx plus Bose noise canceling headphones, so I know how they should work.

A: Naturally, there will be a difference in performance. After all, the price is proportional to the quality and it is not fair at all to compare the Bose at 5-6 times the price with this inexpensive accessory."

I wish I had read this before buying them.

In my opinion, save even more money and get a pair of sony buds without noise canceling, and enjoy a greater frequency range and no hiss!

Headphones, Active Noise Reduction

Product Description

The superb-sounding Altec Lansing AHP712 headphones with Active Noise Reduction are ideal for the frequent traveler and anyone in a noisy environment. Active Noise Reduction technology uses small microphones to "listen" to ambient sounds and special circuitry to create a sound wave 180 degrees out of phase from the ambient sounds. When the sound wave is played through the headphones, it reduces ambient noises, such as airplane engines and subway rumbles, to allow you to focus on your music, movies or games.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for what you pay for them!.......2007-08-31

I have friends with the Bose versions and these sound almost as good at less than half the price. My only complaint is that they are ackward if you pull them off for a moment and try to put them on your neck. For example, when you are boarding the plane or when you have to talk to the flight attendant for a minute. The battery life on the noise cancellation is EXCELLENT! One AAA battery has lasted for over 24 hours so far. I only wear them when I am flying.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Backup, Not Worth The Hype.......2007-07-20

Noise Cancelling is pretty descent... but when turned on there is a defnite buzz in the background that can be annoying. If the music is loud enough it will cancel it out... but you shouldn't have to worry about that in a quality pair of headphones.

They are fairly uncomfortable after any period of time.

The audio overall is perhaps slightly above your average pair of headphones... but certainly nothing for an audiophile... as the base isn't great at all, and at high volumes there are definite distortions ina ll ranges.

Bottom line, if you can find these for $30 or $40 it may be worth it for you and if you aren't too picky... but if you want a real noise cancelling experience, i would look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Disasterous Design.......2007-07-02

Looking for a replacement for my Bose which fell apart after 2 years of use (outrageous for a product costing $300), I decided to purchase the Altec Lansing because they have a long-time reputation for quality products. This is not one of them.

Putting aside the loud noise-cancellation hiss that sounds like somebody blowing air across the top of a long plastic tube, and audio that sounds like it is piped through that same long plastic tube (make a circle with your hand, purse your lips and speak through your fist - that's what these headphones sound like!), but the true disaster is that the sound cuts out when you hit a bump. Ride in a car or bus on an Interstate or a jiggling train and the sound will skip and disappear. The effect is similar to what would happen in the early days of portable CD players when motion would cause the laser beam to lose its tracking, or in olden days bumping a turntable causing they stylus to bounce and skip.

If you don't listen to music, but just use the phones for noise-reduction, you will notice the low frequencies creeping back in momentarily as you hit a bump.

The portable "case" is a drawstring velvet-like bag which offers zero protection.

And I suppose worst of all (yep it gets worse) the unit came packaged in see-through heavy plastic that had to be cut/destroyed in order to get the product out of its packaging which means there is no hope of returning it.

If you need a less-expensive Bose alternative with better sound (yes!) then try the Panasonic - it costs 1/3 as much, requires half the power from your mp3 player and does have better sound!

Avoid this product entirely. I literally had to throw mine in the trash. Huge waste of money. And that hurts! When I upgrade my theater sound system, I will not be trusting Altec Lansing!

5 out of 5 stars Altec Lansing AHP712 headphones with Active Noise Reduction.......2007-03-10

Bought as present for world traveling brother. He loves them. Reduces noise on those long flights. He even uses them on the ground as sound quality is very good.

1 out of 5 stars Beware - Headphone broke.......2007-02-12

After 9 months of use, the right headphone earpiece broke at its swivel connection at the headband. The swivel joint is only .25 inches in diameter and each headphone earpiece is massive compared to the strength and durability needed at this skinny hollow plastic joint. When the phones are rotated for storage, there is no guard to prevent a large lever arm to apply force and bend this joint with any movement. The soft carrying bag offers no real protection. After a number of cycles of use, stress fatigue in the plastic (like metal fatigue) sets in and then ...... SNAP one of your headphone earpieces is dangling by its wire.
As an analogy, I offer the example of those plastic model airplanes, you might have made as a kid. To get the individual parts, you bent the pieces back and forth until they snapped off from their molded plastic branches...same principle, but in this case, it results in headphone failure.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible product!.......2007-03-02

Wow...so many problems, where to start? First, the item is bulky and the cord is too short for the huge unit to fit in a side pants pocket. Second, the "active noise reduction" actually just increases the volume a tiny bit; it does not reduce outside noise AT ALL. The cheap rubber fittings are difficult to insert in your ear, and don't seal very well which greatly reduces the passive noise reduction. Also, the sound quality is on par with $3 disposable headphones. It is muffled and just BAD. My advice: pay a little bit more for good-sounding earbuds, and definitely don't opt for the "active noise reduction" when buying earbuds, as it is worthless, requires batteries, and is very bulky.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SOUND QUALITY.......2007-01-19

I use these on my drum set and the noise cancellation is so outstanding that I can't even hear my drums.....at all. The sound quality is superb and the bass is so low I believe it sounds as good or better than my bose tri-port headphones. Great Price and the #1 best place to buy is here on Amazon. You won't find a better price anywhere else for a brand new pair.
