5 out of 5 stars Like 'em alot!.......2007-12-23

The quality of these headphones blew me away. They are comfortable, don't squeeze at all, the single cord is nice, lots of padding on the ear cups and head band does its job. The sound quality is superb, no buzz or hum in the background at all, music is reproduced as wonderfully as advertised. The headphones block out most background noise without putting pressure on you ears or head. These headphones are set up with an 1/8" stereo jack, so get a good quality adapter if you have a music player that is newer than 1981. I've been using these headphones alot for the past month since I got them...they seem to be holding up perfectly, nothing is showing wear, sound quality is still great. Buy and be happy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound for an excellent value.......2007-12-04

These are the best headphones I've ever owned. The quality of sound is amazing. It's like hearing my music for the first time. I couldn't be happier with these headphones. The chord is really long so you can move around quite a bit while listening to your music. I also like the over-ear style because it blocks out a lot of noise so you can listen on a lower volume and not miss out on all the musical details. I looked at a lot of noise-canceling headphones, but they all seem to hiss when you turn the noise-canceling feature on, which is really annoying. The style of these headphones muffles a lot of outside noise, so you focus on the crispness of the sound. I was really blown away when I first put these on and can't say enough good about these headphones. If you plan on listening to music on a computer at work (like I do), then you'll need to get a 1/4" to 1/8" audio converter for the plug (a gold plated one runs about $5 at Radio Shack).

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of WOW!.......2007-11-27

First things first. These are not for kids who wanna listen to all their hardcore screamo death metal at earsplitting volumes. These are not for people who have a 1000 watt sub in their car. These are not for people who take music casually.

These are for recording.

I don't claim to be an expert on what good headphones sound like. I've never had the money to try some 500 dollar audiophile phones. I am a very active musician; I run a studio in my bedroom and my bands practice room. I've been recording in my bedroom for about four years. I use Adobe Audition 2 as my main recording software.

The Audio-Technica ATH M40fs headphones are THE BEST headphones I have ever heard. I'm sure they're not the best in the world. They're just the best I've used, and I'm pretty sure they're the best for the price.

With these headphones I can hear subtleties and nuances that I never believed possible. I can hear breath noise on the flute intro to Yanni's Deliverance. I can hear the bass on Dreamgirl by Dave Matthews without it beng muddy. I can hear the rumbling lows on the intro to The Battle from the Chronicles of Narnia Soundtrack. These headphones are not bassy, nor are they harsh on the mids, they're not overly trebly either. They are very flat as far as I can tell. I love that I can hear all the different parts to music without any of them being over-emphasized.

The downfall to these phones is that they let you hear ALL of the flaws in your own music; it's kind of depressing. If you want to sound like an amazing pro musician just by buying a new pair of headphones...look elsewhere, if you want to hear your mistakes so you can improve, and don't wanna spend a month's paycheck...then these are for you.

The thing that mainly attracted me to these headphones was the frequency range which was wider than the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's that I originally wanted. On top of that, the price was 40 dollars lower; hard to pass up.

Another feature that makes these worth your while is the Field Replaceable parts. I don't know about you, but I don't have the money to buy a new set of headphones if my cable wears out.

These have pretty good isolation. They won't block as much sound as earplugs but they block enough to keep your sound pretty pure.

If you want to hear your music in a way that you never have then buy these headphones.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for recording and general use.......2007-09-21

Having used many brands and types of headphones over the years in recording studio settings for many years, I was disatisified many times by the performance of many 'cans.' These AT's fit the bill perfectly for my studio as well as home needs: excellent low-end response [what's usually lacking], good design, good price. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Monitor Phones for Recording/Mixing.......2007-09-11

I bought these to use with my new Alesis Guitarist Playmate and they are great. They are light and fit the head perfectly. They are very comfortable and can be worn for hours while recording or mixing. The sound is very neutral - you hear what you recorded. They have a very broad freq response. At the price, it would be hard to find a better headphone for recording or studio work where pure reproduction is required.

5 out of 5 stars Five for $10.......2007-12-06

I give these JWIN headphones five stars because for $12 including shipping, these headphones do a decent job. These are great entry closed headphones because they give you a reasonably comfortable feel around the ear, are light for economically cheap headphones, and just overall a good built for the price. I personally don't enjoy the feel of earbuds in my ears and I decided to upgrade from the standard open headphones that come with Sony walkmans. Just to dip my toes in the water, a friend recommended these so I could get a feel without blowing money on something unpredictable in taste, feel, reliability, etc...

Before I even read the other reviews, I too thought these lacked a clear treble, but the midrange is punchy and the bass full fills the low end of the midrange well. It seems to reproduce a snare drum well, not muddle too much on toms and you can pick out the bass drum. Anything midrange sounds fine, but no definite gloss to a guitar, but it doesn't lack in an annoying fashion. The bass guitar by itself is okay for practicing, but again isn't so clear in a mix always, but supports well enough for a $12 set of phones. For general rock and overall "filled" recordings with a lot going on, they are fine. Even on my classical piano music they sound well. For any electronic or jazz music I'd look to going up the latter a little bit more (though I have no recommendations). The lowest frequency response is 20 hertz, and I wouldn't bank on that. A recording like Lusine's "Make It Easy" remixed by John Tejada easily shows the limitations of the bass, that's why I recommend buying a better headphone if you plan on listening to a bass groove genre, but don't want to spend over $50.

When you first get these and want to find what I believe is the truest response with what I think is a balanced EQ recording, try Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It may surprise you for what you get out of $12.

If you're new to the game of headphones, this is a good place to start. Now I'm building myself up from these without any regrets.

5 out of 5 stars I have owned these for 6 years. They're good........2007-10-12

have owned these headphones since Jan 12, 2001. Why so specific about the date? Two reasons: 1) it was my first time haggling with a business owner over price, and 2) so I get a little credibility for the review :)

Anyway, I am listening to music on these headphones as I type this. The bass is SUPERB!! I listen to ALOT of jazz and I also love hip-hop. When listening to jazz I like to hear the bass and sax/trumpet leader (or piano leader). Not that drums aren't important, but they get heard no matter what headphones are used. With these bad boys I am able to hear the low/mid/high end with quite a bit of clarity. The bass sounds rich and clear instead of muddy and boomy. The mid/high end speak beautifully and never sounds tinny. I'll admit that after over 6.5 yrs of relatively continuous use (approx. 50 hrs/week) I notice a decrease in quality of sound, but that's to be expected after so much abuse. With that in mind, I still haven't found any headphones for the money that sound as good as these.

I personally never use the volume knobs on the headphones, I just keep them on max and keep my iPod, computer, or CD player(remember those round things) at a lower level. Also I didn't like the fact that the headphones look so cheap. That is a completely aesthetic gripe though because they are very durable. The only crack I got was from someone sittin on them while they were in my backpack. Another gripe would be the fact that after about 5.5 yrs the headphones seemed to stop producing sound. In fact what happened is I knocked the driver loose so I have to push up on the volume knobs occasionally to get the sound back to normal. Remember though this is after 5.5 YEARS of at least 50hrs/week.

Here is a summary:

Pros: clear in all ranges, sturdy as hell, long cord protected by thick rubber coating, consistent across different devices, inexpensive but not cheap, asymmetrical wiring

Cons: didn't use the volume knobs, LOOKS cheap, no-name company, if you touch the headpiece it is heard very clearly (hard to explain...it's not a major problem though)

I bought them for $12 from the guy who tried to sell them for $24. They're definitely worth WAY more than what I paid, but it was a no name company so there was no way I'd pay more than what I did. I've become more of an audiophile and am lookin to upgrade to some much more expensive headphones. If I don't find anything to my liking, I'm going to get these again. I would recommend them to anyone I know.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent headphones!.......2007-09-19

These are a great pair of headphones for a great price. Its a steal. Definately would do business with seller again.

3 out of 5 stars Not That Great.......2007-07-26

I bought two sets of these headphones based on the reviews. This is the first time that the other reviewers have let me down. These headphones are not that great. Yes, they have individual volume controls which you can use as a "balance". And they have a l-o-n-g cord which should be mandatory on ALL headphones. And they do sound better than the dinky "ear buds" that came with my MP3 player. Maybe there is something wrong with my hearing, but the sound that I heard coming out of these things did NOT have a rich bass and the highs sounded like they were "chopped". So, all you end up with is a LOT of mid-range. And I am not a really big guy, but they just barely fit on my head. I felt like I was trying to put something that had been made for a kid on my head. I was very disappointed with these.

1 out of 5 stars I don't care about the low price-they are lousy headphones........2007-06-17

they sound like you are in a tunnel. If you are a real music lover and don't use music just for backround noise or distraction on the treadmill, you will not like these. Luckily, I didn't buy them for myself.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Durable design but lacking in sound quality..........2007-08-23

I bought these to use in a loud office environment. In comparison to the Koss R/80s that I own, which are roughly in the same price bracket, these AKGs don't cut it. The sound is very bright with very little actual bass below 100 Hz. I thought that they might change once they got some use and broke-in a little, but very little has changed (if at all) over the past few weeks.

The physical design is pretty good. The headphones are pretty comfortable, and the design should prove very durable for someone who tends to be rough on headphones. The Koss R/80s in comparison tend to break due to the use of thin plastics at key stress points, so these are definitely better in that area.

My biggest disappointment with the AKGs is how much outside sound they let in. Most sealed over the ears headphones provide a good amount of passive outside noise reduction, but the plastic around the headphone speakers on these is thin and not sound dampened. So outside noise really just comes right though. If I cup the outside of the headphones with my hands the amount of outside noise passing though drops dramatically. So they are not really useful in noisy environments, and would definitely be useless on a plane.

I know these are inexpensive headphones, but it would have been so easy for the manufacturer to make these great inexpensive headphones with just a couple of simple changes. Oh well.

4 out of 5 stars Piano-practice protocol.......2007-08-09

I used to use these for practice on my Digital Piano; they worked great for 6-7 years before finally breaking down, though after all that faithful service I definitely feel they were worth the 35 bucks; intended for musical-instrument use (at least in my experience), but can handle some pretty gnarly signals from your output-device of choice, though the 3-foot chord may prove troublesome for such casual use. I give it 4-stars just based on what I was using it for.

5 out of 5 stars Good Sound, Lasted Me Many Years.......2006-06-22

Getting a pair of quality headphones is a great way to exhance your musical listening experience. The AKG K-55s are the headphones I use at home, being a fan of progressive rock "headphone records", they're kind of an essential. I've had them for many years and they work just as well as when I first got them. The sound is crisp and clear and the dynamic range is great (sounds good quiet, sounds good loud).

The headphones come with a super long cable, which tends to be handy in a studio if the drummer in the back of the place wants to listen to the mix as he plays. It's quite handy for us regular people too. With such a long cable, you can get up and dance with them on in the privacy of your room, and no one will even know, cause they won't hear it. I do it all the time.

The leather earpieces are comfortable and the headband is snug but not tight, often after I've stopped playing music through my laptop I forget to take them off! With nothing playing through them, you can still hear and talk to someone, but with the music up, you'll be hard pressed to hear anything else. I've almost missed my phone on a few occasions!

I've heard that the bass is a little weaker compared to similar headphones. I haven't noticed that much, except when I whip up some homemade electronic music and use these 'phones to mix it, I usually end up with a bit more bass in the track to compensate. It's minor, really, though those who are or have to be strict audiophiles may want to invest in a more precise pair.

Personally, though, I think the AKG K-55 is a great value pair of headphones. I'm going to be sad when my pair finally wears out, but that doesn't look like its going to be for a while yet.

2 out of 5 stars Poor sound, but maybe the price is why........2005-11-29

These headphones do not have a sound that one would expect. While they are very flat in their response, they also have almost no ability to reproduce the lower bass frequencies and even have a dull high-end. Comfort is decent, and the long cord is very handy. If you need a cheap set of monitoring headphones, these might be for you. However they are very odd looking for "street-wear" and would disappoint most people who want good quality sound for listening.

There just isn't a good set of "cans" that have great sound and are cheap. Look at the Sony MDR-V6 and you likely won't be buying another pair again!

Good headphone for this price. The cushion is soft and comfortable. It fits very well. You won't hear noise from outside. Good sound quality.

      3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2007-11-15

They are comfortable, made acceptably well for the price. The sound quality is just OK - far from audiophile, even if they have a 20-20000 rating. Do not drive the bass or they distort terribly around 125hz; the highs are acceptable, but also distort if you drive hard at 8000 hz. In all fairness, they are easy to listen to at normal levels.

3 out of 5 stars Good for everyday use, audiophiles should avoid it.......2007-10-26

I ordered this one after I've bought a crap from RadioShack and after I purchased Jensen headphones (turned out not to be full-ear).

Philips SHP800 vs Acoustic Research closed-back monitor studio headphones:

I hoped for a full size headphone, which emits fair sound. Regarding comfort these headphones meet my expectations. The cover of the ear pieces' padding are mad eof texture, which I prefer over the more regular ones. The head-top cushions are also all right. I was afraid of the variable ear pieces, but the design is sufficient and makes it easier to carry.

Regarding the sound quality I would call it acceptable. I expected a bit better than this, because these are told to have 50mm membranes instead of my Philips' 40mm. However my good old Philips sounds better than this. Although non of the two have any extra bass built in, but in comparison these headphones' bass performance is weaker. The speech range can be clearly heard, so it is perfect for voice converstions. Although I still don't have the same sound experience listening to my favorite hardcore tracks.

I wouldn't recommend for those who keen on perfect sound quality, but I can get along with it during everyday use.

I still prefer the good old Philips SHP800. It has top level sound quality beside its low price range. Why should a company stop producing these, if they sound so good? Only SHP2500 available nowdays from Philips, which is completely the same, expect for the volume controls and the lack of head-top cushions. Volume controls always go wrong, the top piece without cushions can be uncomfortable after a couple of hours wearing it. Why could Philips reproduce SHP800, if they should only remove volume control and put the cushions back on??? I can't understand it...

2 out of 5 stars Not That Great..........2007-09-01

I was drawn to these by their price, something that should never be done with electronics. They don't sound very full, nor do they get anywhere near loud enough, barely above a good 'mixing' level. Save your money and buy something a litter more expensive with better quality.

Sony MDR-V150 Monitor Series Headphones with Reversible Earcups

      Product Description

Studio Monitor SeriesHeadphones incorporate high-end materials and advanced engineering; critically clean, exceptionally clear sound for professional and high fidelity applications. Reversible earcups enable single-sided monitoring flexibility. 30 mm diameter drive units are larger than many headphones for deeper bass, lower distortion and wider dynamic range; bass response extends down to a low 18 Hz. 500 mW power handling stands up to day-in, day-out use at high output levels. Ferrite magnets allow for high energy and compact size producing ample sound output - 98 dB/mW sensitivity. Oxygen-free copper cord assures maximum conductivity, minimum noise. It conducts electricity better than conventional copper. Supra-aural design rests lightly on the ear and creates a controlled environment for better sound. Driver is positioned the correct distance from the ear canal. Wide, molded headband distributes the headphone's weight over a wide area; reduced pressure means comfortable listening for hours on end.

      Amazon.com Product Description

The MDR-V150 closed supra-aural headphones provide top-end comfort and sound quality. Sony's closed type headphones allow only a limited amount of ambient noise into the ear canal, giving your attention fully to the music. The padded earcups fit comfortably, hour after hour. For those who like to use the headphones for single-sided monitoring, these MDR-V150s come with reversible earcups. The supra-aural design is engineered for excellent listening comfort. The wide headband distributes the headphone's weight evenly. The two meter cord (6.6 feet) is made of oxygen-free copper wiring and is double-sided.

Sony has installed several key features to these headphones to enhance their sound quality. The thirty millimeter drive units delivers a deep bass sound and a wide dynamic range (the frequency range extends down to 18 Hz.) Both the stereo mini-plug and the UniMatch phone plug are gold-plated to make sure sound is transported fully and accurately. The gold-plated treatment also helps resist corrosion and supports the headphones' high conductivity and low noise. Lightweight ferrite magnets allow for high power at a minimum size. Finally, the PET diaphragm works to deliver low distortion.

Excellent fit, excellent compatibility and excellent sound: these headphones fit the bill for a sound professional.

5 out of 5 stars Best in class.......2007-12-20

I'm gonna make this brief: I would gladly pay up to 4 times what I paid for these headphones. Great quality, incredible durability, and I did a doubletake when I read the price on the till at my local shop. Highly recommended; these have replaced my $150 studio headphones which have sadly not aged well.

4 out of 5 stars Good value, for the price. .......2007-12-18

I actually have two pairs. One pair that I've had for over a year, and one that I bought recently. I'm no audiophile, but I can hear clear sound through them. They are comfortable for me, and they work.

      5 out of 5 stars MDR-V150 ---- "V" is for Very nice headphones!.......2007-12-15

I've been through many pairs of headphones over the years and it's a pleasure to know that Sony is still making a quality product! These are my all-time favorite and well worth the price (Don't tell the sellers that!)

The sound is great. You get the full audio spectrum from the highs to the lows, and the midrange too. Doesn't matter what kind of music or audio book you listen too. They all will sound great and your audio book will have a happy ending! (Okay well I can't guarantee that last part).

Comfort is great. They fit snugly, won't fall off, and will block out other noises. They'll plug into any Walkman, iPod, MP3 or CD player, computer, or home stereo system. Get these while you still can! They're Very nice. You'll thank me.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Good To Me!.......2007-11-21

I am well satisfied. The volume is good, and, if you like bass, it enhances the music. Considering the price, it's a great buy. I have to admit the ear pads are a little small, but it's still a comfortable fit. Since the headphone fits tightly on my head, I can tune everything out, and hear what I'm listening to without disturbance.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-11-16

I spend much of my time on the computer, and I spend much of that time listening to music. I've probably spent an average of 4-5 hours daily listening to music with these things for the past 3 years.
If the current pair I'm using right now broke, I would take out the spare pair I have in a desk, and then purchase another pair the same day.

I am not really an audiophile.
If I were given the option to blindly choose between these headphones and some nice, over-the-ear, true noise canceling ones, I would probably end up picking the noise canceling ones.

That said, I strongly doubt that I will be getting anything else anytime soon. For their price, they are magnificent. Yes, they are poor quality compared to some other options, but for $15, they can't be beat.

4 out of 5 stars Old model, but great design.......2007-12-18

I have gone through many headphones. These by far are the loudest. You can crank them up and use them as desktop speakers they are so loud. Design is extremeley sturdy. I was reccommended by 4 DJ's who use these to buy them. I have been through other Sony's, Pioneers and Denons. A lot of these other models all have breaking points. Most Sony's are rugged and usually the only problems I would have were wearing out the ear pads till they came off. These so far are the most durable for packing and traveling. Only thing I am interested in newer models , are possible replacable ear pads and cords. But these are excellent for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound, great price.......2007-12-16

These are excellent sounding headphones. I purchased them for my nephew last year and was afraid he would balk because they aren't the new little ear inserts most kids use today with iPods, etc.. He was exceptionally impressed with the sound. He's also a musician and has an appreciation for sound. He's still bragging about them this Christmas season.

      4 out of 5 stars Love these!.......2007-11-29

These are the most comfortable headphones I have ever owned. I keep a set at work and at home and I've had both sets for at least 4 or 5 years. The oversized ear cups are soft and padded. There's just enough grip for me to slide them off of one hear to hear conversations and speak or just listen for ambient sounds without having the set fall off. I have kind of a small skull so usually big headphones fall off of me. The sound is rich and full, not cheap and think like a lot of small form factor headphones.

One star lost for the coiled cord. I know a lot of people like that but I don't care for the "telephone cord" style. It gets hooked and twisted on itself and if I lean away from the output jack the weight of the cord is enough to make the headphones fall off.

5 out of 5 stars better tha anything else I've tried.......2007-11-25

I use these these to transcriptions of audio, and they work a lot better than anything else I've tried. I can hear things a lot better than ever before.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome headphones.......2007-10-08

I tried these next to the Bose Tri-port and was smitten by the MDR-V600's crisp highs and mediums. The bass was a little heavy, but with some adjustments on the output, I now use this as my everyday commuting headphones. They are a little heavy/bulky, but still very comfortable to wear during long sessions (even with glasses on). I highly recommend these and would buy again many times over.

4 out of 5 stars Sony Headphones Review.......2007-12-25

this is definitely a good buy. the sound is clear and loud, perfect for any mp3 player. it is also very comfortable.

i read on Cnet that after three years, they still love it, i havnt had it that long but if i do, i will be a happy owner of this item.

its a bit pricey, but well worth it.

as long as you dont sleep with these things on with your head rested against something and the headphones pressing against your ears, you should not encounter much or any pain.

also, the wire for the headphone is extremely long. good for DJs, but not for owners who just want to walk around listening to music.

all in all though, it is still a great buy and i definitely recommend it to anyone willing to pay for it!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.......2007-12-17

Sounds good, worth the money. But really uncomfortable, hurting my ears after 1 hour of using.

      5 out of 5 stars Sony MDR V700JDJ Headsets.......2007-12-12

This product came in a very timely manner, excellent price through Amazon, and resolved a little confusion along way. The product itself is very durable. My last one lasted three years, and it was used three times a day, and did receive abuse from my autistic son, and survived. Not as light weight as others but strong and a good choice for my family and life style.

      4 out of 5 stars From a DJ's perspective..........2007-10-10

I am on my second pair of these headphones. I bought my first pair in 2000. All the standard things went wrong with my first pair... the plastic around the swivel joint cracked and the plug began to go bad. However, I used these headphones for over 6 years in the club and at home. I really don't see how anyone can expect them to last any longer than they did. For the price these heaphones are fantastic. They have great response and are extremely convenient and comfortable to use. I have used the Pioneer HDJ-1000 as well and am not really sure where the extra $50 is going.

As a DJ I can honestly tell you that this is your best pair of heaphones for the price.

      5 out of 5 stars Sony Headphones.......2007-09-11

I love these headphones, there so comfortable and the sound quality great. its worth the money if your looking for great professional quality and not some low end stuff

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-12-13

I don't know much about audio, but these are some of the better sounding headphones I have heard! I couldn't tell much of a difference between these and my friends $170 BOSE headphones. I do agree that they are kind of tight, I pretty much fixed that though by pulling them apart a little bit. It helped them fit a little more comfortably. Long cord is obnoxious for my use, but someday it might come in handy who knows. Overall well worth my money!

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent headphones.......2007-10-17

The headphones are excellent and perform perfectly. The ONLY negative is that the "springiness" or "spring strength" of the band to which the phones are attached is too tight, and as a result presses the head more tightly than is desired. The customer suggestion here would be "Try to see if there is an ADJUSTABLE springiness possible, as opposed to a FIXED spring strength for that band."

      4 out of 5 stars Great Cans...!.......2007-06-24

These are great headphones, with good sound balance in the bass, smooth, and with an overall warm character. The nine foot cord is a plus. However I wish I'd known about Sennheiser HD 435 which has a cord which is detachable and easy to replace - great because that's usually the first thing to fail on headphones- and has a volume control feature on the cord. But I'm satisfied well enough with this one.

4 out of 5 stars tight on the ears.......2007-03-16

The sound is great, as expected. But why are the earcups so small and uncomfortable?

4 out of 5 stars Good for the price.......2007-03-13

These headphones are pretty good for the money ($49.99). Not as great as the Bose, but then they are 1/6 the price! The sound is great and they muffle a lot of outside noise so you can really listen to music or audiobooks with no distractions. The only thing that I don't like about them is how tight they are. After a few minutes they hurt my ears because they squeeze so tight. The temporary solution is to stretch them a little bit on a soccerball or something. After a while they go back to being tight though, so I don't know if there is a permanent solution or not. If I had the extra money I'd go with the Bose QC2 headphones, but since I don't these will have to do! Overall I'd recommend these headphones and I'd buy them again.
