Presenting an excellent mouse!.......2007-12-24
I was simply looking for a Bluetooth mouse. I found an excellent replacement for my Logitech Media Mouse. It has some different functions, but all of the multi-button functions are there and the presenter buttons on the bottom are really cool. My IT guy set up the mouse for me (thems the rules) so I do not know how it is to setup, but it works flawlessly.
I only have 2 observations (not really complaints). The first is that while this mouse has all of the whistles and bells of a desktop mouse, it is still notebook size. It is a little small for extended use. The second is that the extra buttons on the sides normally used for 'back' and 'forward' are in awkward positions.
The 'click' is smooth, the scroll is smooth and the pointer motion and positioning is precise. This is an excellent mouse.

Less than perfect, better than awful.......2007-12-13
First of all, I have to assume that Microsoft has improved the documentation since some of the earlier reviews were written, as I DID find instructions on how to use the mouse with another Bluetooth adapter, such as the one found in a notebook. What they don't tell you is that the Microsoft IntelliPoint software will not recognize such a connection so you can't use any of its special features. But you can do almost everything needed.
The mouse does work with the built-in Bluetooth of my ThinkPad T42p, but not all features are available. The mouse motion, left and right buttons and scroll wheel work, as do the presentation buttons, but the two side buttons for the magnifier and "digital ink", etc., do not. More to the point, Microsoft's software does not recognize any connection other than through their dongle, so you can't customize anything.
Contrary to a comment I read, the IntelliPoint software did NOT disable my Thinkpad's Trackpoint mouse. It did make me uninstall Logitech mouse software I had, though.
On my ThinkPad T42p, I used the ThinkPad's Bluetooth Setup Wizard, select "I want to find a specific Bluetooth device". Then put the mouse into discovery mode by pushing and holding the recessed button on the bottom until the light flashes. Click Next and have it search for devices. It will find the mouse and then find the service. You're done.
With this setup, everything (that I have tried so far) works with the exception of the side buttons and clicking the mouse wheel. The rest of the mouse functions and the presenter functions work, even blanking the screen in PowerPoint. I have not tried the media buttons, though.
Some things I like about this product:
- Nice shape for the hand
- Compact
- Good quality laser pointer
- Smooth scroll wheel with the side scrolling feature
- Handy presenter functions
Some things I don't like:
- Wobbles a bit when clicking a mouse button
- No visible indicator that it is switched on
- Software does not recognize non-MS Bluetooth
- Case is bulky and does not securely hold dongle (if you're using it.)
- Can't use mouse pointer without switching modes (my separate presentation mouse had its own directional pad plus left and right buttons.)
I was previously using a Logitech wireless (non-BT) travel mouse and a separate presentation mouse, each of which had its own dongle. I'm happy to go dongle-less with one device.

It's a mouse, it does not cook, clean or do the laundry, but it's small, easy to carry around, comes with USB BT so it can be used on more then one PC at a time. One thing that MS should look into is making the scroll wheel with some resistance, sometimes, while moving the mouse, the page would scroll, because it trigerred the scroll wheel. The good things is mouse works during Windows install, which is great! The small size will make some people dislike it, because the buttons will seem out of place, then again, some people don't like notebook keyboards or cell phones for the same reason. My suggestion is, if you don't have overly large hands, like tiny cell phones that gets lost in your pocket, then this is for you - assuming you need a small mouse to go with the small notebook.

I was surprised. .......2007-11-05
Despite looking and Feeling a bit cheap when I first pulled this presenter out of the package, I was pleasently surprised. This presenter installed without a glitch and has been flawless in working.
I am not sure that I trust the distance of - Up to 50 feet - but if you can stay well under that distance it seems ok. (I had to actually point toward the reciever when I was about 40+ feet away)
The Roller ball is pretty useless when you are using the presenter as a mouse. It is hyper-sensitive. I did not understand why this was the case until I used the ball with my thumb in presenter mode. I really only use the ball when in presenter mode anyhow and it is easy to master. The ball is obviously "tuned" to be used only in presenter mode - but when else would you need it????
I use this product in presentations 1-3 times a week and have had a great experience.
The only thing I would change on this product is - it would be nice to have a rubberized finish on it and a bit "beefier" feel to it. Other than that - 5 stars...

Nice piece of hardware.
2 modes of operation:
Mouse mode: when on flat surface, trackball acts like scroll wheel and standard 2 mouse buttons.
Presenter mode: Laser pointer enabled, 2 extra mouse buttons are available under mouse.
Works fine on XP, although administrator access is needed to get the extra 2 buttons under the mouse recognized. Also works on Linux (Ubuntu) in both mouse and presentation mode, but I haven't gotten into XF86Config or whatever it's called now to get the extra buttons enabled.
Also, it's a little narrower than most desktop mice so it fits my hand better.
Limiting to 4 stars because I've only been using it for one week.

I've waited to review this product until after having it for over a month and using it for a presentation. In a nutshell, it is a good product and worth the money. It is very satisfactory as an optical mouse (its main usage) and was very good as a remote presenter.
Cons:
- as noted, trackball is a little touchy, which means you need to monitor your hand waving while presenting -- but I think this would occur with any trackball device, and would only be avoided by getting a remote presenter with a joystick-type point device. It was not a problem for me.
- the USB receiver blinks as it receives input: this could be distracting if your computer's USB port is within sight of your audience. However, I used the included pouch to block the USB receiver's blinking from my audience and it looked fine while solving that issue
- the programmable 3rd button could have more features: in particular, the "magic" program list option would be more useful if one could assign its programs.
- I have more success with the USB receiver directly into my computer (perfect mouse recognition) than my other setup, which is USB receiver into cradle into USB hub into computer's USB port. This may have to do with my hub, and is merely occasionally annoying (the mouse not moving exactly as I expect it should), not problematic.
- installing the drivers seemed to affect, in my case, my laptop's touchpad driver. I lost the ability to change my touchpad tapping and scroll-area prefs -- I haven't played around with this, though, and it may be solvable.
Pros:
- the previous reviewer's rejoinder to the first reviewer is true: there is adequate programability of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th buttons.
- the mouse automatically switches from mouse to presenter mode using a sensor on the bottom -- nicely thought out
- the mouse seems to automatically lower mouse-sensing activity, probably to reserve battery life
- battery life looks to be good in the month i've had it: 4 full days of mouse work at a time without the low-batter indicator coming on
- good weight in your hand when presenting: this could have been a problem with a mouse-and-presenter device, but with this product it is not.
- pouch is nice and fits the mouse, charging cord, and USB receiver
- 4th and 5th buttons are great for presenting: the buttom-programming-options include good ones, including forward, back, up, down, switch application (it looks to scroll through the app list you get in XP by Alt+Tab), screen saver -- these are all useful for presenting
- comfortable in hand in mouse role or presenter role
In sum, I was pleasantly surprised by this device. I recommend the product.
Nearly perfect.......2007-04-15
I bought this to replace the Gyration wireless mouse I had been using with a Media Center PC. The GearHead mouse is a MUCH better product... The multi-function, programmable buttons are well-placed & responsive, and the laser pointer is a nice bonus. All in all, it's a great wireless mouse, and worth the price--if you need the extras.
A previous reviewer suggested the functions of the right & left buttons can't be switched for left-handed use; they can. Using the Mouse Properties, you can select: "Switch primary & secondary buttons." The same reviewer suggested that you can't click/hold/drag; you can. On the same Mouse Properties dialog box, you can select: "ClickLock," and you can adjust the click/hold settings to your liking.
I gave it 5 stars, but it's more like 4.5 - the trackball isn't as precise as I'd like, and I would have liked more options for each button, but compared to all the other similar products, this one is by far the best.
Presenter's Programablility Falls Short.......2007-03-29
I ordered this wireless presenter as it is one of the few presenters with an omni-directional mouse (in this case a mediocre trackball, which is not very precise as compared to a regular mouse) that has programmable buttons. The options to what you can program the buttons to do is quite limited for my purposes:
1. The left and right click buttons (two large ones on the top of the mouse on either side of the trackball) cannot be reassigned at all. Not so good for left handers.
2. The other three buttons, one on the top of the mouse below the trackball and the other two buttons on the underside of the mouse (good design placement) can only be mapped to one of ten different options.
This would be fine if the options were more useful however they were lacking several key options (in my opinion):
A) left click or right click can NOT be assigned to any of the programmable buttons.
B) click and hold/click and drag can NOT be assigned to any of the programmable buttons.
These limitations make it nearly impossible to click and drag, or move the mouse with either the right or left buttons held down -which I personally need for a variety of applications. If the programmability of the buttons is a key selling point for you I would recommend you download the manual, which is available from the Gear Head website, and read the section on what actions can be programmed to make sure that it will accommodate your specific needs.
On the plus side: of the three different brands of wireless presenters with omni-directional mouse capabilities I have tried this one was the most responsive.

When i got this mouse, it took me almost an hour to make this mouse work in my Windows XP environment. The document is insufficient (both on the box and website) as it does not explain how to configure the mouse for the first time when the receiver is plugged into the system. there is a tiny reset button on the receiver which needs to reset after pluging this device to the system for the first so that it recognizes the wireless mouse and this button is not easily noticeable for the first time unless you thoroughly look into it. The lack of documention from targus pissed me of as i have to google the information for almost an hour. I believe lack of proper documentation is the reason i find lot of people are not able to configure this device for the first time and they have to return it back. otherwise i did not have any problems as other reviewers and i have been using this for few days at home and work without any problem.
Good Wireless Optical Mouse at a GREAT Price!.......2007-11-23
I just got this mouse as part of a "notebook essentials" kit, and it's proven to be a fine value for the money. A few things:
**The size is great for travel... maybe it's too small if you have large fingers, or too heavy if you're a 98 lb. weakling... for everyone else, it's fine.
Easy of use and the movement is as smooth as my corded infrared mouse at home (granted, I've never used it further away from my laptop than about 2 feet).
The blinking blue light on the USB part is a little annoying, but you will know for sure your connected
**The sleep mode is great... if you click on a button, it comes to life immediately. My guess is the earlier reviewer with the problem had an older laptop.
The earlier reviewer was incorrect, this mouse is totally plug-and-play and you can plug it in whenever you like, before powering up, in the middle of working on something... whatever. Note if you find it not plug and play, you seriously need some Windows updates.
The buttons and scroll wheel work perfectly.
Here's the bottom line: upon seeing it in action and finding out the price, two of my friends went out and bought one. It's not perfect, but it's great for the price.

My first one lasted a few months before it stopped working. The manufacturer replaced it and the next one lasted about ten months but it has now died on me. I wasn't dropped and only used once a week. So the quality is very poor in my experience.

The only time this presenter worked was when I was standing beside my computer. As a school teacher, that is not an option. I also found the buttons to be extremely confusing and the enclosed manual was absolutely NO help at all.

Good while it works.......2007-10-25
I wanted to purchase this presentation remote because I had an older version which I lost on a recent business trip. However, I was a bit dissappointed to see that it did not work as well as the older one. I noticed that when you first plug it in, it works for a few minutes, but then, the mouse function stops responding. I then have to unglug the USB receiver and plug it back in to make it work. Also, it does not come with any presentation software as the old one did. Overall, I am a bit disappointed with this remote. My laptop computer is a Lenovo T60 running Vista.

This wire-free USB unit is portable, smart looking, and very effective. Being wire-free in some set ups and offices is very valuable.
There aren't any other units nearby, so I can't be certain that if there is more than one, there won't be "cross-talk." I would find it surprising if this was a problem.
Presenter Mode Only.......2007-10-17
I'm looking for a presentation mouse that will allow me to move the mouse around the screen, like a gyro mouse. This mouse doesn't do that. It does allow you to switch to presentation mode and click through pages of a powerpoint presentation for instance. I had to look in the product manual on the Kensington website to find that out. Otherwise it appears to have great features.

OK if all you want is a small mouse with left /right button. But the scrolling wheel is too stiff to be useful.
As a presentation tool it is slow to start up. Limited range- 25 ft. Needs direct line of sight.
Beatiful and Excellent.......2007-11-30
I have purchased and used more than twenty mice of both wired and wireless ever and finally I found the most excellent mouse. This is it. Wireless mice are attractive but many of them are a bit delay on the screen against the more. I tried "LX7 Cordless Optical Mouse" which didn't follow my hand's move so I quited to use soon. "Targus Wireless Notebook Rechargeable Laser Mouse" was so-so, but when I make a draw clip art by myself for PowerPoint presentation, I got stressed to move. 'Wired'-Microsoft Notebook mouse 3000 is still even better.
And this mouse. When I took it from the box, I was surprised at the thinness. More surprised at the ultra small USB dongle which comes from the mouse body.
The mouse color is even better than the product image. It's more darker color rather than I imaged.
Then I tried to use this mouse and the holding this mouse is a new experience. The design of this mouse is nothing to say and, and, and, I think this mouse gives me the most accurate track of my hand's move ever!
The presentation function works fine, but the only one thing that I was disappointed was that it didn't have no laser pointer. I thought "Presentation Mouse" means that it is including a laser pointer, but it doesn't have.
I checked on Kensignton's web site, I found that they had SlimBlade Presenter _Media_ Mouse and that will meet my (and perhaps our) requirement. But the media mouse is even more expensive than this one. The price is more than $50 even though we have MIR. So totally, purchasing this mouse might be still more realistic solution!

Not for the VPs.......2007-12-03
This presenter is comfortable to hold and the buttons click nice and accurate, unlike other remotes I have used. The cursor action is slow, but some people may prefer that.
The big problem that I have with this remote is that it will not stay connected with the receiver. Turn off the computer, the remote, or unplug the receiver and you have to have them re-associate them with each other on the next use. This requires a key combination on the receiver and the presenter.
I personally don't have a problem with this, but it confuses the executives to no end. The manual says that it should automatically associate, but this isn't the case. It's a shame because otherwise I like this presenter.

This has proven to be a handy, perfect device for presentations. We use this in a church service environment, it is very handy to plug in to a visitor laptop to aid in their presentations as well as our own devices.
