4 out of 5 stars Russ Walkowich's mymac.com Review.......2007-12-30

Over the years, I've used just about every type of mouse out there: Apple's one-button mouse, trackballs, corded and wireless, small and large, two button up to multi-button. I even used the Kensington Turbo Mouse (version 3) during the mid-90's and enjoyed its capabilities and ease of use. Fast forward to the present time and here I am using Kensington's Expert Mouse, the descendent of the Turbo Mouse. How does it hold up?

Out of the box, the Expert Mouse is simple to install and set up. Plug the USB cord into your Mac, go to Kensington's website and download the latest version of MouseWorks, install it and then set your preferences for what you want each of the four main buttons to do, set your click and scrolling speed and the pointer speed and you're good to go. Want to open up an application? No problem, set it up in preferences as to what button you want to use and off you go. Launch a particular URL... set it up and away you go.

The unit itself is designed as 5 3/4"L X 1 1/2"H X 5"W with the end closest to your hand being less than 1/2" in height. Kensington solved this problem of the unit being so sloped by providing the user with a padded palm rest that easily attaches to the low end and slopes your hand up into a more comfortable position. Once you've set up your Expert Mouse, the first couple of hours are normally spent just getting used to the feel and the capabilities of the mouse. The six-foot USB cable should prove to be more than enough for most users to set the mouse up comfortably on their desktop and not feel restricted.

Choosing what button on the unit does what can be an interesting experiment in itself. I found that I changed my first selection of button use once I became more familiar with the unit and discovered that it was far easier for me to utilize the top left button to scroll, the top right button to go back/forward, open in new window; the bottom left button to click and the bottom right button to double-click. The nice thing about Kensington's MouseWorks is that is does work and it doesn't cause any problems with the operation of the Mac, unlike some other software.

I found the trackball to be great, quiet, smooth and easy to use. The use of the trackball to scroll is just fantastic in its ease of use and control, and with the bottom left button set as the click, I'm easily out of the scroll mode and able to move the cursor to where I want and then use the bottom right button to double-click and open a link. The one issue that I did have is that the Scroll Ring just did not seem to work the way it should. I found that no matter where I had the scroll speed set to, in using the Scroll Ring the movement was jerky and at times, I wound up right back where I started from. Utilizing the trackball in scroll mode solved that issue right away but I was disappointed in the way the Scroll Ring just didn't seem to work the way I thought it should. Despite that issue, I would still highly recommend the Expert Mouse to anyone looking for something more than just a plain old mouse.

So to review:
Pro: Easy to use, easy to program, good number of programming options available to the user; use of trackball to scroll was great. Great warranty on the product.
Cons: The one problem that I had was with the Scroll Ring, just could not find a comfortable movement to make scrolling as good as it is otherwise.

System Requirements: Macintosh running OS X or later with an available USB port. Internet connection or CD-ROM drive to install the software.
Warranty: Kensington 5-Year Warranty and free technical support.

Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Trackball But Its Almost Too Smooth.......2007-12-28

I would give it 5 stars but for my needs and preferences I find the new model inferior to the 64214 (and family). Mostly, because I like the weight and feel of an actual pool ball which you can use in the previous models. I also am not a fan of the new scroll wheel placement. That said, this made a great gift and its recipient couldn't be happier!

4 out of 5 stars Trackball works beautifully, the scroll ring, not so good.......2007-12-21

This is my third Kensington trackball and the first of this design. I've tried a number of different pointing devices, and Kensington is still the best of the bunch for my purposes (and for my problematic and sometimes aching hands). The trackball part works beautifully and I love the fact that I no longer have to clean the little rollers. I nicked one star for the scroll ring. It's a nice physical design, but applications respond to it erratically at best, to the point that I've mostly stopped using it. Hopefully, it's just a driver issue and the scroll ring will eventually work as well as the ball.

2 out of 5 stars Remarkably average mouse.......2007-12-20

I used this trackball on a Mac running 10.4 and it performs its basic functions as advertised. You can mouse around the screen and the four click-buttons are large and easy to configure. The optical trackball works.

However, the true disappointment comes when trying to use the scrolling capabilities. As you have read from the product description, the scroll wheel takes the form of a dial surrounding the trackball. This dial suffers from two inhumane issues:
1) The feel of the dial is atrocious. I would have hoped for a slick ball-bearing or smooth-as-silk (SAS) movement. Instead, Kensington delivered an unflattering plastic-on-plastic (POP) feel. Just as you think your fingers have applied sufficient force to overcome the static friction of the dial, some inconsistency in the formation of the POP causes the dial to falter. This leads to the second issue.
2) When you use the scroll dial, your fingers have little choice but to move the trackball. Take a look at the picture and try to imagine this: Suppose you want to make two full revolutions. Your scrolling finger must remain perfectly perpendicular to the dial. In order to make a complete trek around the trackball, you have to crimp your hand. In the event you cannot keep your finger perpendicular, it will naturally swipe against the trackball and move your cursor. What harm does that do? After each scrolling session you must stop to relocate your cursor. In certain applications, this may cause unintended actions.

Lastly, when Kensington moved from their last Turbo Mouse design, they eliminated their quick-launch buttons. Those buttons allowed you to perform virtually anything you wanted with a mere flick of your finger. They are henceforth gone.

At $100 (+/-), this mouse is horrifically overpriced. It's depressing how overpriced this is. I feel pity towards anybody who looks at this mouse online and opts to buy it based on Kensington's description. At a minimum, you should run to your local tech store and try it out in person before you buy it, because then, and only then, will you realize that it's not worth it. This mouse makes me sad.

Nonetheless, I must confess that the 5-year warranty has served me well. My old Turbo Mouse died on me eight times. Yes, eight times. Each time it died I just called up and they sent me a new one. I can only hope that the quality of this mouse has improved over the previous generations. Also, I'd be remiss in my reviewing-obligations if I neglect to mention that the software has never been an issue on my Macintosh systems. It's always been easy to install and configure. I'm not sure if that's a testament to Kensington or Apple, but there you have it. Lastly, the two stars are for it's ability to perform it's core functions.

I'd highly recommend this mouse to anyone who likes overpriced garbage.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2007-12-19

The Wireless Turbo Mouse would seem to be a good bet, however it suffers from a very poor implementation of the scrolling ring when used on the web. The problem is it should advance the screen smoothly, but it's annoyingly jerky, and therefore continues to be annoying day after day, month after...ect. I called Kennsignton in an effort to tell them my thoughts, and was listened to patiently, but it was a waste of time. The point is, this company had a lot going for it years ago, but now seems to be coasting down hill. Also, the battery needs replacement about once a week, so if you buy this, plan on a recharger and extra set of C cells.

5 out of 5 stars Good mouse.......2007-12-26

Works well. Makes navigating the big 23" monitor on my Mac a cinch. Accurate cursor placement. Can even use for simple graphics. LOVE it!

5 out of 5 stars Great unit~!.......2007-12-26

This produce is a must have for us. If you have shakey hands and poor controal of your hands, this unit will be much easier for you to use than a commond type mouse with the tracking ball on the bottom.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad. . . .......2007-12-18

if you need a cheaper alternative to carpal tunnel syndrome. I, too have used the Expert mouse from Kennsington for as many years as the previous reviewer. I also bought a turbo-mouse. It failed, but was replaced by a Fantastic remake of the Expert, with a spin ring that serves as a scroll wheel (Thank you Kennsington!). But I found the Kensington Orbit Optical Trackball Mouse 64327, despite its high quality, a bit too light weight, literally. It was hard to keep it still during intense use. The smaller ball was also hard to keep from flipping out of its "eye" socket and I found my thumb reaching too high for critical left clicks.
So. . . if you've never used a Kennsington Expert mouse, the Optical Trackball is probably a GREAT choice. But if you're accustomed to the perfect heft, ergonomics and ease on the wrist of the Expert, don't buy yourself short. . . get the Expert.

5 out of 5 stars Trackball mouse elminiates wrist strain.......2007-12-04

When I have a lot of mouse work, if I use a regular mouse I sometimes get wrist pain and discomfort. By using a trackball mouse, in my case the Kensington Orbit Optical Trackball Mouse, I eliminate the pain. Instead of gripping a mouse with my whole hand, I roll the ball with my outstretched middle three fingers. Also, I program the little-finger key to double click, thus eliminating many clicks I would have had to perform with my thumb. When I first got a trackball mouse years ago, there was a definite learning curve/adjustment phase that lasted a couple of weeks. It felt a little awkward. But, that feeling soon went away. Eliminating the carpal-tunnel pain that comes with heavy mouse work is so worth the relatively short time it takes to adjust to using a trackball mouse. I would recommend this mouse to anyone who does a lot of mouse work and want to eliminate repetitive-injury discomfort.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mouse.......2007-11-08

I love this mouse!! The roll ball glides smoothly and I've had no problems so far. I bought this mouse specificaly because of the roll ball, before the mouse I was constantly having wrist pain and since the mouse my pain is gone. I love it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Mouse.......2007-11-25

My old mouse died on me so this was a quick replacement. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was made. It's been about a month, and I have very few complaints with it. Only problem really is the placement of the side buttons, but that is probably because I am used to the Microsoft Intellimouse. Overall, great mouse and I would definitely buy it again for the price.

3 out of 5 stars First impressions review: Not what I expected.......2007-11-09

I got this mouse for an iMac (Core 2 Duo) because reading all the information and reviews told me: this is the mouse for me. However, this mouse is not what I was expecting. So allow me to comment on any ides you might get from other reviews and the software description.

I thought it would be quiet. The main mouse buttons and scroll button are medium-medium-quiet (which isn't very bad, but I wanted quiet). But the side option buttions are LOUD.

I thought it would be pretty comfortable for my medium-small hands. It isn't bad, but it is kind of tall at the center (the hump is in the middle) and a little wide.

The software was no good. It installed fine on my Mac OS X 10.4.10, but it wouldn't open the preferences it installed in the System Preferences. It said I needed to update the software, which was especially funny since mid-install it asked me if I wanted to download and install a newer version (which turned out to download 2.5), and I did. I had to go to their website and download 3.0, which worked. However, I did not like the configuration of the buttons, and there was no option to make the side buttons do Exposé. It also put an ugly icon of a mouse inside a gear at the top of the menubar (next to the time) which let you know if the single-direction scroll wheel was set to go up-down or right-left. Guess what? Clicking the scroll wheel changes this back and forth, which means no more opening and closing tabs in my web browser with that button. I decided to un-install the software, and now it acts more like a regular Mighty Mouse (excluding the sideways scrolling).

A minor (or not so minor?) thing is that the mouse cord has lead, and it says "wash hands after handling"! Wash my hands every time I touch the mouse wire? Why don't they just use regular rubber or something?

Another minor thing, scrolling the middle wheel a little (so it doesn't actually scroll a notch) makes a sound like the wheel is loose.

Finally, the optical sensor which gives the mouse its location doesn't work on all surfaces it should. I work on a white table that has a kind of matte reflection, and for some reason I cannot find, the mouse doesn't work properly over the part of the table I usually use; I have to use a mouse pad! A funny thing is that a Logitech mouse I have which doesn't work on a raw wood desk (in the same way this one doesn't work on my white table) does work on the white table, and this Kensington mouse does work on the wood table. (The Apple Might Mouse works on both surfaces.)

So, in summary, it is a decent mouse, but it has many areas that need improvement in order for me to consider it a mouse I would recommend or buy again.

5 out of 5 stars Has excellent "feel".......2007-10-15

This mouse does what it is supposed to do, but unlike some other ones I've tried, the scroll wheel has a nice "feel"--smooth but just the right amount of click. It works fine on my Macs.

4 out of 5 stars Mouse is great, with one caveat.......2007-10-03

I have one of these mice for my home computer and one for my work computer. The five programmable buttons are very handy, and of course optical mice are hands-down better than mechanical mice.

However, you have to install software on your computer in order to make it work. On my laptop, installing this software rendered my built-in touchpad mouse unusable. Even the guys at the computer shop couldn't fix this. I finally had to reformat my entire system to get the touchpad to work again.

5 out of 5 stars Best mouse on the planet.......2007-07-17

Allegiance to a mouse is a bit odd, but this is one thing I couldn't do without. I have four of them and have given half a dozen as gifts. The effective use of 7 buttons w/ popup lists makes it amazing. Not to mention that it can be configured for every application you use.
I was just setting it up for Aperture today, using keyboard shortcuts in the popup menu. I defined several common tasks for the front buttons chording, thus I don't have to take my hand off the mouse, move to a keystroke combo, then back to the mouse. I'd give it six stars if there was such a thing.

5 out of 5 stars Best mouse I have ever used........2006-11-07

The iridio is the best mouse that I have ever used. The medium-sized shape fits right in my hands, it's quick and response, and the scroll wheel works very nicely.

The great software provided by Kensington lets me make all of the customizations I need for maximum productivity.

I am buying a second one because my wife and I cannot fairly share the Iridio I already own.

2 out of 5 stars click! click! click!.......2005-11-16

    1. it clicks really loudly, enough to annoy me and anyone in proximity to my computer
    2. the scroll jumps around just like it was described by another reviewer, and it happens in all applications/programs (i'm running apple os 10.2)
    3. it is a comfortable shape, but that's not enough to keep me happy...
    4. i'm shopping for another mouse.

1 out of 5 stars Looks nice, but has an annoying problem.......2004-10-14

I've used this mouse for over a year thinking that mac OS X had a weakness where scroll wheels are concerned. No matter what application I used (web browsers, Word, Acrobat) the text would always jitter when the scroll reached either the upper or lower limit and ultimately stopped at some random place. After trying a generic scroll wheel mouse I discovered that it worked perfectly without needing to install special software. My experience with the Iridio was bad, but is thankfully over.

5 out of 5 stars Great for mac users with small hands.......2003-09-22

I liked the puck-style mouse that came with my G4/450 mac because my hands are small. But after a few years, it eventually started skipping around even after I cleaned the ball and the rollers. I like the Logitech optical scrollwheel mouse on my pc so I bought something similar to it for my mac. I went to CompUSA first to compare mice visually because for me, size IS important. Of course, I bought it at Amazon because the prices are so much better here. The Kensington Iridio optical three button scrollwheel fits the bill. It's smaller than the average mouse so it fits my hand, ready to go for the mac and I like that clicking the scrollwheel makes a link open in a tab in Safari. I also have the option to create my own default settings for clicking buttons by using the enclosed software. Plus, it really is quite attractive and matches the look of my graphite mac.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Mouse.......2003-07-31

I just recently bought this mouse and I think its great. They give you two ways to connect it to your computer, by either USB port or PS/2 mouse port. Installation was a snap using their software. I had it working in seconds and I'm not computer literate. This item also shipped really fast. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt the cords are a little too short. I ended up taking both cords and connecting them together. Overall its a great product with a fantastic price.
