Tremendous Value.......2007-12-24
I have now purchased and listened to the two most expensive Shure Earbuds. They are great, but very costly and kind of big. I have the Dennon 700, the Sennheiser CX 300(also an unparalleled bargain), the Audio Technica CK7, Ultimate Ear (as of yet, not listened to), and the Bose earbuds(I hate them. They are uncomfortable with muddy base and indistinct sound).
I think that I enjoy the Creative Zen the best over all with the possible exception of the Shure 4c. The Creative has a very clear should that allows you to hear instruments with incredible clarity and presence. The upper end is sparkling and fun. The bass is very clear and a little punchy. These phones will never have the full bass of an excellent over the ear headphone. The sound seems richer than the Sennheiser 300. The sound might be ever so slightly colored compared to the Denon which seem very nuetral. The Audio Technica also seems to have a very neutral presentation.
I have to agree with what many of the reviewers have said when they express great disappointment that the sound is tinny or small sounding. It really is all in the fit. When I first bought the Shure 4c, I spent $300.00. I purchased them from an audiophile stereo shop. I paid full price. When I purchased them, I think that I got caught up with the thought that I was buying "the best" because they were so expensive. The salesman really did not explain how to use them properly and he used these foam rings around them to test them. I suspect that it was for hygene reasons and that they would throw out the foam rings. At home, I did not spend the time necessary to establish a good fit on the Shures. At the time, I thought that I had made a bad choice. Now that I know what I am doing putting them in, I do so much better. I think the Shures are wonderful.
The reason that I believe the Creative Zen Arvana's are so good really is the fit. Like the Shures, they are slightly angled,i.e the body is at an angle from the portion that extends into the ear canal. This allows you to really put the earphones deep into your ears and for the earphone to hang out of your ear in a comfortable manner. I have also found that they work better if you put the earphone in your hear by wrapping the cord over the back of your ear and inserting them from the top of the ear rather that just to stick them directly in your ear canal with the wire simply hanging down. It allows you to adjust the sliding piece so as to make the whole apparatus to fit reasonable snugly which is good if you are using them in the gym.
Lastly, unlike the Denon, Audio Technica, or Sennheiser earphones, they come with a little case that allows you to protect the earphones so that you might get year out of them without breaking them (if you do not lose them first). I have been using old cufflink boxes to put the Denon, Audio Technica, and Sennheiser earbuds into to protect them.

I've had these headphones for about six months and I didn't realize how good they were till a couple of days ago. I bought them for my forth deployment to Iraq/Afganistan and now they are history. Of all things do do them in, a field mouse. The little furball chewed them up and ruined them forever. Since I have very little choice but to buy something here(which is next to nothing), I got a $10 pair of Sony cheapies and now i know what I paid for. Yes the Creative had their quirks but based on what I have now, they were more than worth the extra money. solid bass(when fitted properly, you really need to do this), clear mids and highs. It did take a little to get use to them being in my ear, but after that everything was fine. Durability was not a problem. After a couple of training exercises and around three months in this less than perfect area to live in, they held up very well. If you are a little more serious about what you listen to and how you listen to it, these are a good starting point before entering the world of $200.00 to $500.00 sets of earphones.
Great sound.......2007-11-04
I bought these prior to a long international flight. They worked great and are very comfortable. They fit in the ear canal so need to be sure you have them in far enough to get good bass effects. they also give you an adapter to use with the jacks on the plane and this made using the plane entertainment system much better. They give you a case but it wont hold the adapter jack, cleaning stick or spare ear pieces. that would be helpful. also there is not a seperate volume adjustment and that would be helpful as well. however, overall i rate these very good for sound quality and they do a good job of blocking out the background noise.

Guys, come on now. I'm by no means an audiophile, but when headphones that cost $120+ (CAD) start distorting at moderate volumes on a piano concerto, there isn't much room for argument. These headphones are among the worst quality I've ever heard, especially for their price range. The bass is muddy and seems detached from the music, as at higher volumes, the bass comes out as almost background noise. The high end is shrill and overpowering, I actually got a mild headache from using these headphones.
I used these for a day at work (office setting), listening to various genres of music including classical, hip hop, heavy metal, progressive rock, etc. The only genre that these did nicely in is techno, and even then I didn't get the bass response needed. After that day of work, I returned them (the same day I bought them). Piffle.
DO NOT BUY these, look elsewhere for high-end earbuds.

Not Bose...But Close at almost 90% cheaper........2007-11-06
I have owned the Bose noise cancelling headphones and a panasonic clone, the HC-500. I lost the Bose in Las Vegas (I am sure the cab driver was happy!) and the Panasonic's are garbage.
The Turtle Beach ANR-20's are remarkable in their noise cancelling capabilities. If the Bose are a 10 (Which they are!), these Turtle Beach ANR-20's are a 9.5
Most people do not understand what noise cancelling headphones do. They reduce or (in the case of the Bose) eliminate ambient noise. No they won't cancel out your nagging wife to do the dishes.
In an office environment, they are excellent, unless you need to answer the phone alot. I also use them in the car without a source, just to reduce the outside noise. You do NOT hear road noise or wind, but you do hear sirens or horns.
As headphones for Ipods, Zunes, or any other music player they reproduce music with great definition. Would it be nice to have volume control, Yes, would it be nice for it to include a jack for airplanes, Yes.
A couple of things these do that the Bose don't, is that if the batteries go dead, they STILL play music from devices. Also there is a control knob to regulate the noise reduction. This is a great feature to compare the differences between noise reduction turned on and off.
I totally recommend this unit, and for a price about 10% of the Bose, it is a steal!
Sound Quality not good.......2007-09-22
I just received this ANR-20 headphone. What I observed is it noise cancellation feature works fine but it fails in the sound quality. It sounds like a $5 headphone with poor bass and sound quality! Also no volume control on the headphone, uncomfortable for big head.
Try some other noise canceling one...better to spend some 20 bucks more to get better sound quality!

Decent sound and comfortable fit, however all the noise canceling feature does, is add hiss.
I looked at the turtle beach website to make sure I was not doing anything wrong, but the only relevant advice for me was the following
"Q: My Turtle Beach buds don't cancel noise. I also own the $xxx plus Bose noise canceling headphones, so I know how they should work.
A: Naturally, there will be a difference in performance. After all, the price is proportional to the quality and it is not fair at all to compare the Bose at 5-6 times the price with this inexpensive accessory."
I wish I had read this before buying them.
In my opinion, save even more money and get a pair of sony buds without noise canceling, and enjoy a greater frequency range and no hiss!

I have friends with the Bose versions and these sound almost as good at less than half the price. My only complaint is that they are ackward if you pull them off for a moment and try to put them on your neck. For example, when you are boarding the plane or when you have to talk to the flight attendant for a minute. The battery life on the noise cancellation is EXCELLENT! One AAA battery has lasted for over 24 hours so far. I only wear them when I am flying.

Noise Cancelling is pretty descent... but when turned on there is a defnite buzz in the background that can be annoying. If the music is loud enough it will cancel it out... but you shouldn't have to worry about that in a quality pair of headphones.
They are fairly uncomfortable after any period of time.
The audio overall is perhaps slightly above your average pair of headphones... but certainly nothing for an audiophile... as the base isn't great at all, and at high volumes there are definite distortions ina ll ranges.
Bottom line, if you can find these for $30 or $40 it may be worth it for you and if you aren't too picky... but if you want a real noise cancelling experience, i would look elsewhere.
Disasterous Design.......2007-07-02
Looking for a replacement for my Bose which fell apart after 2 years of use (outrageous for a product costing $300), I decided to purchase the Altec Lansing because they have a long-time reputation for quality products. This is not one of them.
Putting aside the loud noise-cancellation hiss that sounds like somebody blowing air across the top of a long plastic tube, and audio that sounds like it is piped through that same long plastic tube (make a circle with your hand, purse your lips and speak through your fist - that's what these headphones sound like!), but the true disaster is that the sound cuts out when you hit a bump. Ride in a car or bus on an Interstate or a jiggling train and the sound will skip and disappear. The effect is similar to what would happen in the early days of portable CD players when motion would cause the laser beam to lose its tracking, or in olden days bumping a turntable causing they stylus to bounce and skip.
If you don't listen to music, but just use the phones for noise-reduction, you will notice the low frequencies creeping back in momentarily as you hit a bump.
The portable "case" is a drawstring velvet-like bag which offers zero protection.
And I suppose worst of all (yep it gets worse) the unit came packaged in see-through heavy plastic that had to be cut/destroyed in order to get the product out of its packaging which means there is no hope of returning it.
If you need a less-expensive Bose alternative with better sound (yes!) then try the Panasonic - it costs 1/3 as much, requires half the power from your mp3 player and does have better sound!
Avoid this product entirely. I literally had to throw mine in the trash. Huge waste of money. And that hurts! When I upgrade my theater sound system, I will not be trusting Altec Lansing!

Beware - Headphone broke.......2007-02-12
After 9 months of use, the right headphone earpiece broke at its swivel connection at the headband. The swivel joint is only .25 inches in diameter and each headphone earpiece is massive compared to the strength and durability needed at this skinny hollow plastic joint. When the phones are rotated for storage, there is no guard to prevent a large lever arm to apply force and bend this joint with any movement. The soft carrying bag offers no real protection. After a number of cycles of use, stress fatigue in the plastic (like metal fatigue) sets in and then ...... SNAP one of your headphone earpieces is dangling by its wire.
As an analogy, I offer the example of those plastic model airplanes, you might have made as a kid. To get the individual parts, you bent the pieces back and forth until they snapped off from their molded plastic branches...same principle, but in this case, it results in headphone failure.

Wow...so many problems, where to start? First, the item is bulky and the cord is too short for the huge unit to fit in a side pants pocket. Second, the "active noise reduction" actually just increases the volume a tiny bit; it does not reduce outside noise AT ALL. The cheap rubber fittings are difficult to insert in your ear, and don't seal very well which greatly reduces the passive noise reduction. Also, the sound quality is on par with $3 disposable headphones. It is muffled and just BAD. My advice: pay a little bit more for good-sounding earbuds, and definitely don't opt for the "active noise reduction" when buying earbuds, as it is worthless, requires batteries, and is very bulky.

I use these on my drum set and the noise cancellation is so outstanding that I can't even hear my drums.....at all. The sound quality is superb and the bass is so low I believe it sounds as good or better than my bose tri-port headphones. Great Price and the #1 best place to buy is here on Amazon. If they don't break on you, they are a spectacular buy. Don't believe anyone who says the sound quality is terrible. The sound is phenomenal for the price. Note: The bass is much better with the amp on. Even though they felt cheap, I was very happy with them until the unusually-thick, stiff, tin? wire that came with it shorted on the inside. Yes, all the materials are dirt-cheap, but hey, cheap means lightweight, and lightweight = good. Instead of buying a new durable cable which is what I should have done, I returned the product. Now I want to reorder them. I can definitely see them snapping easily if you have a wide head.
Coby CV191 Noise canceling headphones.......2007-03-30
One word describes this product; "JUNK"!
I bought three pair of these phones in the Montego Bay airport duty free electronics store on Dec 31/06. One pair broke as soon as I put them on my head in the departure lounge. I hadn't even plugged them into my ipod yet and the left ear cup snapped off.
I got them replaced right away before my flight left. That pair snapped the right ear cup off about two weeks later. My one son's pair broke on the flight home - the right ear cup snapped off after just two hours of listening. (My other son got his pair stolen at the airport which is not Coby's fault, but they are probably broken by now too)
All three pair of CV191 are broken and in the trash. STAY AWAY from this headphone. The sound quality is actually very good ... but the integrity of the phones is junk. They are very very cheaply made.
Thankfully Coby replaced two of the three phones at no charge with the CV-192. These seem to be built much better and sound just as good.

I bought these because a friend of mine bought a pair of Logitec or Creative noise canceling headphones that were awesome. These are not awesome. The materials are cheap. The earphone portions are uncomfortable, and apparently they are made for a child's head because my small to average sized head is still uncomfortably squished. The best (read: worse) part is that they don't work. They don't cancel anything. I've tried a couple of other brands so I do know what to expect.
In the case of these, I expected a lot more.
Cheap Quality, Good Sound.......2007-01-28
I picked these up at a closeout store locally and half expected to end up throwing these away. For the price, I was willing to take a chance. I am glad I did. You can look at them an tell they are cheaply made. I haven't folded them up fearing they might break at the hinges but the audio quality is better than any non noise-canceling set I have owned.

I hate to give these 1 star because they could have been much better:
The band on these headphones is the worst piece of junk I have ever seen. Ok now that I got that out of my system.... I bought these in the main lobby of an airport. After passing through security and into the departure area I excitedly unpacked them so I could try them on the flite. They immediately broke when I tried to put them on. Fortunately the dealer had an outlet in the departures area so I got a replacement. I tried to put the second pair on very gently and they also broke. I didn't have enought time to return the second set because the plane was bording. The force it took to break them was equivalent to breaking a toothpick (very serious). I fixed them (with black electrical tape) and then rapped electrical tape around every joint and they are solid now. Electrically they are very good with great active noise cancelling and decent sound. I'm using Bose Quiet Comfort II's at work and these are about 80% of the Bose at 1/8th the cost. The sound is pleasant with a warm bass and transparent highs although a little brittle sounding. The Bose QC's have a cleaner sound and slightly better passive noise cancelling but the active noise cancelling is similar.
It's to bad the Coby's are mechanically so bad. After reinforcing mine they're ok now and the band is much stiffer so they also have better passive noise cancelling (noise seal) but forget about adjustments and collapsability which didn't concern me anyway. I use them to listen to a small Sony FM radio while commuting on the buss instead of the Bose QC's from work. They have a detachable cord using standard mini-phone plugs which is great, they still work when the noice cancellation is turned off (the Bose don't) and they are super light and comfortable. If you buy them they will break!!! I give them a 4 for electrical performance and a 1 for mechanical quality.
Unfortunately most people are not going to be happy repairing a broken product and they should NOT have to, so they would be better advised investing they're money in something else.

Still the best available.......2007-12-20
I've had these for almost four years, and they are still going strong. I keep an extra AAA battery in my bag so I have never been without. They were essential as a consultant that flew across the country constantly. The sound and comfort are great, and the noise cancellation is even better. More bulky than the Quiet 3's but I took the 3's back and stayed with the 2. I couldn't always recharge the 3's before a flight, but with the 2 I don't have to worry about that.
The ONLY possible negative I have found, and this depends on the person, the volume will never be as loud as other headphones. (ie I also have tried JBL, Sony). The difference is fairly noticeable if you compare straight up, even with the adjustment on the Bose.

Not sure what it is about these things. I commute a lot (both on the bus and on the plane). They do pretty well but their performance is not consistent. My ears get "tired" from fluctuation in ambient noise and from the feeling of having "suction ear cups" over my ears. I do like them better then noise isolating earphones that go in your ear canal. At least with the Bose I can chew a meal or turn my head side to side without hearing the scraping sound of the headphone cable rubbing against my shirt collar.
All in all, not that bad performance wise, but the price needs to come down to get more then a 3 star rating.

Excellent Performance; Cheaply Built.......2007-12-11
The sound is excellent. The construction is below poor. Mine self-broke into pieces. The plastic portion of the headphones just broke. The rubber pieces around the ears cracked and started to pill off leaving black flakes everywhere, including on myself. All of this started to happen after the one-year guaranty expired -as if it knew-. I hope Bose comes out with a better product than this fiasco.

There is no doubt that these earphones sound great, but other models from Sony for example sound just as good for alot less money. But the fact is for the price they should be durable and long lasting. They require a great deal of power, which means replacing the batteries frequently (on average every few days depending on the use). Not only that these earphones are not durable. After only a year, one of the phones has broken off. I didn't step on them or otherwise abuse them, its just that after putting them on and off so often, one finally just broke off. I called Bose but replacements cost $100 irregardless of the problem. I would imagine they take your phones and send you different ones rather than fixing yours. For $100 I could just as easily by another pair from Sony that I really believe would last longer. Personally believe I wasted my money buying these earphones.

I am not a music lover and know very little about the technicalities but I bought this item as a gift for someone who is and it is and much appreciated by the receiver. Bose products lead the field. Service from Amazon was excellent too - received in record time.
Amazing noise cancellation.......2007-12-20
This product provides amazingly effective noise cancellation. I have easily been able to integrate it into home and office use, and I very much look forward to being able to use it on flights. The rechargeable lithium battery is an excellent feature (I don't want to have to think about cell batteries). These headphones may be expensive, but you shouldn't let that deter you from giving them a shot. I am very glad that I did.

After ordering the Bose QC-3's I was looking around and saw the reviews stating that the A-T headphones had as good or better sound-canceling, so I ordered a pair. Doing a side-by-side test in my car, at moderate speeds with 4 studded snow tires, it was instantly clear that the Bose does a much better job in the annoying low frequency range that drives me crazy. I also like the rechargable battery--I hate having to keep buying batteries.

I received one of these last Christmas just in time for a flight to Australia. Bliss! Peace and Quiet! I guess I never realized how noisy the airplane is until I got these. Absolutely love it! BUT I just purchased one from Amazon as a Christmas present and it arrived in it's package with a shipping sticker slapped on it. The earphones appear to be fine but I'm not happy about giving a present that looks beat up and has a big old sticker with my shipping address on it. I understand not wanting to waste packaging etc but this is a rather pricey item, it's December and it's highly likely this would be a gift. Bose did agree to Fed Ex the package back at their expense and to replace it but we're still talking about a week lost. Good thing I started Christmas shopping early!

Hi; This an excelent product. The quality Audio is excelente. It is comfortable and the battery duration is almost 21 hours. Aisolation is also ok. The only negative value is the high price. I am using it in my new Ipod Touch (16 GB). Very Important: Buy it if you are encoding over 192 Kbps...if you are not....you will be get the same performance with a simple headphones for less thant $50. Best Regards.

Decent sound, Not durable.......2007-12-26
I bought these earbuds in July, it's now December and they have crapped out on me. I feel like my use of them was normal. I'd use them with my little Sandisk Sansa Express player, carrying it all around in my pocket.
What happened is the end by the plug has become flexed too much I guess. I have to twist and turn the wire in order to hear sound in the right ear now. They are basically worthless to me at this point. The plastic is just not very protective of the wires inside.
They were good until they broke. I liked the different sizes of ear canal attachments.

I have never written a review on amazon.com, or any website for that matter, and I've been online shopping for a very long time. These headphones are what I've been looking for for so long. I never thought I especially had a difficult time fitting earbuds in my ears, but somehow these so much better than any earphones I've ever had. The bass is perfect (even though it is always adjustable via EQ for iPod owners), and the noise reducing actually is TRUE, unlike most earphone claims, as I can have my iPod set to half volume and I still don't hear my obnoxiously loud fish tank at home or people talking while they walk by me on campus.
Also, I can have my iPod up all the way on volume and I don't hear one crack in the sound, even on my hardest and loudest songs.
And once again, I CANNOT get over how amazingly these fit, just with the original size of the rubber covers still on them. I've yet to try out the other sizes, but if they fit even better, I'm convinced that I will continue to buy these headphones for the rest of my musical life.
BUY THEM. I would have paid four times the amount I paid for these if I knew they were these good ahead of time.
Earphones just don't get better than this. I can't even imagine how they could.

I had to return the product because one bud was noticeably louder than the other. Ignoring this problem, the sound was just okay and there was no real noise reduction. The black rubber that goes in your ear is thin and hollow, so it does nothing to block outside noise. There are other options such as a colby on amazon for around $5 that would be just as good for a third of the price.

I bought these to replace my worn-out Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia In-The-Ear Headphones (Black) and stupidly, thought I would save a few bucks by buying the Jlab earbuds this time around. I had become quite attached to the in-ear design, having discovered that it gives vastly superior sound quality and outside-sound blocking above the old style of standard earphone designs. I thought, well, these are in-ear headphones, they surely give similar quality sound, right? Wrong. After trying them out for a day, I got curious and plugged in my old Sonys (ragged but still functioning) and the difference was dramatic. The Sonys gave crisp highs and booming bass, and clear sound. The Jlabs, by comparison, was like listening to music underwater. So take it from me, spend the extra $10 or $20 and get yourself some Sonys or equivalent mid-price range headphones.
