Fan moves alot of air. Cannot mount in same bay as hard drive. Mounted mine in a bay below, my SATS Hard Drive, to cool off under the HDD. It lowered the overall temp of my case 9 degrees. I'm sure it's directy cooling off my HDD more than that. Fans are very quiet.

It definitely does work, i'll give it that. I have a 3.5inch 500GB or so PATA HD in the thing, plug it into my laptop via USB. No errors or anything after weeks of heavy use.
The fan seems like it rubs a little. When you first turn it on, the fan spins noisily, and there is a little banging sound as the blades seem to rub on something. I have had this happen to other cooling fans, and they don't last long when they are rubbing, so I'm not very confident this one will last. It sounds sick, sick as in not healthy. Within a minute or two of powerup, the fan slows down and is less noisy and irritating and sick-sounding. And the hard disk does work.
The case has held together, but you can push the sides and it kinda flexes in, which doesn't inspire confidence but is probably structurally ok.
When I have moved the case/hard disk while powered on, it has "crashed" if I tap it the wrong way, causing me to have to turn the enclosure off and on to get it working again. I don't mean a hard tap -- I mean moving it setting it down onto a cushion (following me and my laptop) but without being very very careful to slowly position it onto the surface where it will lay. A little extra shock absorbtion in the case would help this I bet. I have a regular 3.5" HD in the thing and I know they don't like to be moved, and if you just want to plug this in to a stationary computer and leave it forever, you should be ok.

This HD enclosure is a great tool, especially if you need to extend your HD with USB. However, it is made from a metal frame that screws together and the metal is not cut correctly so some of the side panels will fall out.

Pros.
It works fine so far.
Direction of air flow is from outside into inside.
Cooling fan works well.
Blower noise is acceptable.
Turned off the HDD inside automatically when host PC turned off. *1
Cons.
Little bit tough to set up.
S.M.A.R.T does not thru the USB interface.
Contact points are nothing to manufacture.
There are no Tel# and URL.
Make a HDD into SATA 1.5GB mode as jumper setting required.
*1: It is an interesting feature. When the host PC turned off, the HDD inside is also turned off. However, still the enclosure and the fan be working. Then the PC turned on, it is needed to make the enclosure turned off then on.
I put WD AAKS 500GB HDD in it. It works with Win XP SP2. It does need to put a HDD jumper pin to make into SATA 1.5GB mode, because I got unstable problem with SATA 3.0GB mode. The user manual says it as vague. You don't worry about the performance, because USB interface is bottle neck rather than SATA 1.5GB.
I don't install and try the one-touch backup software which is a PCCloneEX lite, because generally I don't believe such one.
If I could get manufacture contact point or the web site, I would put five star.
does not have winxp drivers.......2007-03-11
This enclosure does not have WinXP drivers. WinXP just says that it is an unrecognized device. The drivers that come with it are only for Win98. I went to their website and the drivers section contains only one exe. I ran it and it says that it is meant only for Win98.
I emailed the company last week but have not heard anything back.
