Customer Reviews:
Excellent value and Performance.......2007-12-31
I bought this radio out of curiousity, after reading about its outstanding long-range AM reception (my wife and I spend a lot of time up in the mountains). However I made the mistake of listening to it at work - the FM sounds so good, I sent back the Sennheiser noise-cancelling phones my company provides, and use the SRF-59 instead, to drown out all the sounds of co-workers yelling into their phones, coughing, sneezing, singing at their desks, etc. So... I will probably buy another SRF-59 for use in the outdoors. Physically, the radio looks and feels solid - I guess time will tell. Shortcomings? More difficult to tune than a digital rig, but that's a given on a small analog radio. Also the belt-clip thingy is awkward to use. Other than that it is hard to fault, especially at under $15.
Later: I forgot to mention, my radio came with the Sony MDR Headphones - these phones sound good, are lightweight, have enough bass but not too much.
Great for the money.......2007-12-17
This was a very inexpensive radio when I bought it (your results/price may vary), and it was worked very well over the several months I have been using it. I clip it to my running shorts for my daily 9-mile beach runs, and it works fine. The tuning dial has little relationship to the frequencies you are tuning, but that doesn't matter much to me. My criteria is that it clips to my belt, is small, light and durable, and can tune in weak stations without being fussy (as digital tuners are). This radio does well what I want it to do.
Great Buy.......2007-12-14
In a time of $150 iPods and satellite radio, it's nice to know that a lowly $15 radio can deliver good performance and entertainment. I bought this for my morning walks and it picks up my local NPR station as well as the local AM talk stations with no problem. I live 30 miles north of Orlando, where all the stations are, so I usually leave the DX setting on to maximize reception. As far as I can tell, I receive all the major FM stations. The one exception is the university station, but my more expensive radio has problems with it also. It also seems to work well in my apartment.
I cannot speak for the headphones because I've never used them. I bought a $12 pair of Sennheiser earbuds that I prefer.
The "Volkswagen Beetle" of portable audio. Simply perfect........2007-11-30
THANK YOU SONY for not messing up a great design.
This radio is simply perfect for what it does.
I'm on my third incarnation of this radio and will buy another one.
By calling it a "Volkswagen Beetle" I mean that it's simple, efficient and does the job.
I am a radio junky and listen hours every day... in bed, around the house, walking in the rain. I also take this radio overseas, on mountain tops, on public transportation, etc.. I used to really enjoy using it on airplanes until they changed the rules!
I suppose if you only listen to a few pre-sets, maybe you'd like a digital better.
But for "surfing" or finding to far-away stations, an analogue dial is way better. Most old ham radio guys (like me) will tell you that a dial is the best way to get the best signal.
The radio has only a few buttons and dials but they are the right one.
The two thumb dials (frequency, volume) on this radio are perfect -- they are easy to dial but firm enough to hold their positions in your pocket.
The buttons are the only ones you really need:
* A dedicated on-off button.
It's big and in the right place. I love a dedicated button because I can turn it off during the commercials or phone call. When I turn it on again, it's on the right station and at the right volume. Having a dual-use volume and power knob (as many radios do) means you're always re-adjusting the volume.
* AM/FM (no comment needed)
* FM DX/Local
This is a touch of class. You will probably leave it on "DX" (which means far away in ham radio slang) unless you live near a big FM antenna -- then you're very glad it's there!
As for "DXing" on AM -- this radio does well. I have one of the better table top AM radios around (the GE SuperRadio III) and this little Sony holds its own against that.
It goes for hours and hours on one AA battery. I've never timed it but it's so efficient that you don't have to worry if you leave it on over night or similar. I use it for hours every day but change the battery only rarely.
It is loud enough. I happen to prefer hear buds and it is VERY loud enough with those.
Durability -- I have never broken one, despite having dropped it a zillion times. I've never totally immersed one in water but I've had them rained on or used them with wet hands many times.
My only changes in design would be very minor - I wish Sony would add a little hole to attach a lanyard, so I cold wear it around my neck. Also, on rare occasions under pressure, the belt-hook will self release. But this might be better than the alternative of actually breaking (it is plastic, after all.)
Last but not least is the affordable price -- I hate to pay too much for portable devices since it is so easy to lose them. You can find portable radios cheaper than this one but I wouldn't expect them to be half as good.
(I must seem a little nutty about this product! It's just that I rarely get to review something I like so well after having used for so many years. (fifteen years? more?).
My opinion.......2007-11-23
It's an excellent radio. Light,Practical and good size. You can hear it perfectly. I recomend to purchse it.

Cheaply made........2007-11-17
It's not sturdy at all. However, it does the job that I need it for. I would have purchased something stronger that didn't feel as if it would break if I dropped it or used it frequently. Flimsy.
Good machine with one (correctable) exception.......2007-11-09
I agree with the other positive comments, with one exception. This is a good, economical cassettee player for my purposes, which mainly involve listening to talking books. However, it only has a MONO output which means, if you are listening through regular headphones, ONLY THE LEFT HAND speaker has any volume! It was bothering me--perhaps it wouldn't someone else--so I took it to my local Radio Shack and bought the following adapter, which has corrected the problem...I now hear out of both sides of my headset. The adapter cost approx. $4.00, and is called a "Gold-Plated Stereo-to-Mono Audio Adapter; Accepts 1/8" stereo plug; Fits 1/8" mono jack, part number: 274-882." Without this one issue, I'd give this recorder/player five stars. It is very well made for the money.
The Best.......2007-10-30
I'm a singer who owned the previous model for 20(yes) 20 years. It was cue/ review ff/rewind torture for the machine, as I used it for voice lessons. It just recently quit.'nuff said.
Watch out mp3s...........2007-10-30
Cassette tapes are on a comeback, so get yourself this awesome tape player and don't forget to buy some hammer pants and grow a mullet. They don't get any better than this, complete with mic/phone jacks, ac/dc power, built in speaker and mic, and a mechanical counter!!! Wow!!!!
Respect the books on tape!
Good for the most part.......2007-10-19
I'm able to record not only to the speakers, but I can hook a mircphone and do the same. Very functional - you'll find yourself easily using this when needed. Sony did good here!! Audio outlet and handle also are beneficial. Be sure not put volume too high when recording cause you may hear static/air in the background but not that much.

Customer Reviews:
Magellqn hates their customers.......2007-12-28
I got a Magellan Roadmate 360 product as a very nice gift 2 years ago, this Christmas the power port got wonky so I emailed Magellan for information on where to take it for repair. I got an email back saying they no longer support this "older model" and that the best I can do is to try to trade it in for a refurb at a price. I called Customer service to see what the deal was, and I was on hold/transferred/on hold etc....after 20 min I decided I have no wish to provide this company with any more of my money. I realize that technology changes swiftly, but this is a minor repair and the thing was over $500 and is only 2 years old. I can get a computer repaired after 2years. They Really dislike to have to deal with customers and I would recommend you not purchase any products due to complete lack of support/customer care!
I Love It, But It Isn't Perfect.......2007-12-25
I keep learning new things this little box can do. I love it! I don't know how I ever got along without it.
BUT it cannot "find" my house - just my street. If I try to plug in my address, it doesn't even take me to my street, but the nest one over.
I live in the country and go to people's homes to fix their computers. It is "wrong" about 10 percent of the time, but usually can at least get me close.
There are streets that were built in the last 3-4 years it doesn't have. We all know fast food places change hands all the time. You can't update this information. And some things are just plain wrong. I could accept the problems if we could occasionally get upgrades to fix them, but if we can, I haven't discovered this yet.
The attachment kit for the car is ugly and cumbersome. I went to a fabric shop and got some velcro tape. Put the hooked strip (actually two, one for the driver, one for the passenger) in the car and put the soft side strip on the back of the unit and it has been great. Easy to get in and out so I don't have it in the car to get stolen. Now I can do this to other cars as well.
It isn't as intuitive as I would like, and it does hang up from time to time for no reason. I guess they are still really refining these things.
It needs a one click volume button.
We have used it for hiking, geocaching, bringing pictures to family, listening to music in the car, and finding alternate ways on long trips. When using long non-interstate trips, it is often grossly off in its time estimates and maps out ridiculous routes. When I trusted it to take me on a 90 minute trip I take all the time, it took three hours to get there. Another time it said it would take three hours for a trip that took less than two.
The voice (we call her Gladys) is sometimes difficult to understand because she doesn't pause in the right place and often mispronounces things.
So it isn't as smart as it thinks it is! The 90% of the time she does work is well worth it. All in all, a great little machine as long as you don't expect perfection.
Does an OK Job.......2007-12-12
Seems to work OK but has some minor problems. In my opinion, the POI editor is horrible but I don't operate by Lat/Long - I use addresses. The supplied POI list is very skimpy. It also does not seem to convert CSV format POI lists seem to be able to the Magellan proprietary format either, though it claims it will. I also haven't been able to get an update for the 2006 map that does not shows roads I know have been there for over two years. Hopefully I can get Magellan to correct those deficiencies. It also disagrees with what I know about getting around town but for all that I'm glad I bought it. I like being able to add Way-points that are based on Lat/Long It helps for walking tours finding your way back next time. The Vehicle Nav system can also find them. That is it's real selling point. You don't need a separate GPS system to walk and ride. I'd like to see a 30 or 60 Gig upgrade with an Aircraft Nav system added to the box but this one does fine and I do recommend it within it's limits.
Missing important information.......2007-12-10
Although this item has some nice features, I returned it because it does not read out speed or elevation, two basic items I want to know, especially when driving my motorhome in the mountains. My Garmin Streetpilot 2610 can display these all the time on the main screen, which is the map, and also displays distance to next turn, distance to destination, and ETA at destination. Unfortunately, the Streetpilot does not hold map data for the entire US (requires downloads from PC for different regions), is too large to carry in a pocket, and does not have internal batteries, otherwise I would not even be considering a replacement. What I am looking for is something with the readouts, commands logic and screens of the Streetpilot, but with the size and self-contained power of the Crossover. And I don't need all the other items now in many GPS units, such as Bluetooth, MP3, pictures, etc. All I am after is a navigational instrument.
very smart.......2007-11-29
I am so impressed with this GPS system. Accurate, and delivery was quick. Its almost as if it found its own way to me.

Awesome!.......2007-12-28
I have had 5 other sony ericsson's and this one is the best!!! I will only use sony ericsson phones, and this was the best purchase I could have made.
W580!.......2007-12-28
I would have rated this review higher since the phone meets all my expectations but..... all models except for the white phone come without a memory chip. I had to purchase a 4gig separately.
Good phone, good features, but horrible keys........2007-12-25
I have owned this phone since late August 2007, and it's the best phone I've owned yet. I put my Motorola Razr through the washing machine one Friday night after our football game, long story, but I was looking for a new phone anyway. After I bought the phone, I heard one of my friends say that he bought the same phone two weeks before and his buttons had cracked straight down the middle, and I totally thought he wanted me to return my phone because he didn't want anyone having the same phone. He was not kidding, because five days later, my first key broke, the number 5.
Now it is December, I'm looking for another phone, not because this phone isn't great, but every student at school has a slider. It's been a great phone except every key has cracked down the middle!
Great Deal.......2007-12-21
This phone is so cool. It has so many features that I still dont know about. Tons of music and FM Radio.
Great purchase. I would recommend to anyone.
This is my 3rd phone to purchase through Amazon.com and they do a great job of providing you with the information you need. Dealing with the phone providers is a different story but it has nothing to do with Amazon.com and how they do business.
Very disappointed with the W580i........2007-12-19
My previous phone was the Sony Ericsson S710a, and loved it. So I thought the W580i would be an improvement from that. But sadly it's not. And for the price through Amazon being $.01, I should have bought a different phone even if I had to spend more.
Good:
Clear sound.
Small but good clear screen.
Bad:
Keys cracked right after I had it a month. Amazon didn't seem to know their own return policy as, of the 8 representitives I spoke with, 4 said it could be exchanged with no problem for a different phone, and 3 said they would research it only to send a standard denial email, and one had the courage to say all of them were wrong, apologize for being transferred, and tell me what did I expect from a free phone.
No light on the camera
So so camera, there is pixel lines in every picture
Horrilbe speaker phone
Don't even think about using the speaker to play music.
Sometimes will receive an error of death.
Slider feels flimsy, and I worry that it will eventually break.
Battery life isn't great.
Wrist strap hole is useless
Overall it's a basic phone aimed at teens. Wheras the S710a I would say was marketed towards an older crowd. So I was a sucker for buying this, and now I have to live with it for my 2 year contract. I will most likely end up buying a phone off of eBay within 6 months just to get away from this one.
I recommend a DO NOT BUY...plenty of other phones are better than this one.

Phone Features
The W580i Walkman phone offers a full-function digital audio player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC files. The front of this slider phone includes dedicated music control buttons, and it includes Sony Ericsson's innovative "shake to shuffle" feature. With Shake control activated, press and hold the Walkman key and flick your wrist. A vibration lets you know that the track has been changed--a new song from your current playlist is randomly selected and automatically played.
With the TrackID service, you can identify any song that you can hear by just recording a snippet of sound using the microphone. After sending the file for recognition, you'll have the name, artist and album sent to your phone. Other Walkman features include MegaBass enhancement for added depth of sound, a flight mode that lets you keep listening to tunes with the phone's network connectivity turned off, and Disc2Phone software for easy transfer of song files between phone and PC. It also includes a built-in FM radio with RDS, which displays the name of the currently playing song (when tuned to compatible radio stations).
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.
The built-in 2.0 megapixel camera captures stills and video--and playback of video or still pictures is only limited to the memory card size. Picture effects and custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be setup to fit your personality. It provides support for PictBridge technology so you can print your photos without the need of a PC (either using USB or Bluetooth). And the W580i makes it easy to send snapped photos directly to a blog or an online photo, complete with text. This phone is also compatible with RTSP/3GPP streaming video playback
You can even take your favorite tracks to the track with the W580i, which will count your steps, your calories and monitor your running speed/distance/time with the integrated motion sensor. Your workout results are stored in your phone so you can monitor your progress.
The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. It also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages.

Best Phone I have Ever Owned.......2007-12-23
Recently, my boyfriend and I decided to get an AT&T family plan and we chose these phones due to the fact that they had the best features of all of the AT&T phones, other then the iPhone of course. The W580i has great reception, an FM radio, mp3 and video functionality with a memory card, 2 megapixel camera, mobile messaging, bluetooth, and comes with its own head phones which function as a head set. I've never been happier with the functionality and reception of my phone at the same time. For the price here, I'd take this phone over the iPhone any day.
Great Phone.......2007-12-15
Deciding to switch from Sprint to AT&T with the hope of getting an iPhone, I realize that I was making a hasty decision. Why because a new revision of the iPhone is due sometime early in 2008. So, in the meantime I picked the Sony Ericsson W580i. I actually got a good deal from my local AT&T store, where I ended up getting the phone with a 2 year contract for about $50.00.
I must say, this is really a beautiful phone and has plenty of features that my other previous cell phones didn't have. I love the FM radio and music applications. I got a 4GB memory cardSanDisk SDMSM2-4096-A11M 4GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) which holds all my music, videos and photos. I also got a nice clear case, which to me enhanced the look and feel of the phone Sony Ericsson W580, W580i Transparent Clear Crystal Snap-on Cover Case with ClipThe voice quality is excellent and the included headphones are just as great. Battery life is of the best I have seen on a cell phone. I can go for about 3 full days on a fully charged battery.
To say the least I have become attached to this phone. It might be hard to part from it when I plan on getting the new iPhone in the coming months.
No Cliche Title Available .......2007-11-27
At first I wanted a flip phone, like the Krazr v9. However, it was between it and this Sony. I went with the Sony because of how it looked. I am known to toss my phone into my purse and forget about it for days, so the slider left me worried that I would end up scratching the screen to hell. A valid fear because this screen will smudge and scratch almost instantly. However, what I did was get a small peel and stick screen protector, like that clear plastic you see on a lot of electronics to keep them pristine, and that took scare of the smudges and the scratches worry. The keypad IS a little small. I wish they made it either bigger or the buttons more distinct so that you could see what you were pushing instead of guessing. Your fingertip covers the buttons pretty well, but once you get used to it, it's fine. This is not a phone for texting unless you have very delicate fingers. Sorry but that's true. It IS a great phone if you want an all in one type phone without the BlackBerry charges or getting a SmartPhone. The browser is pretty nice. Not the best but not the worst. The Walkman feature is pure eyecandy. Why get an Ipod if you can pop in a 2-4GB memory card into the phone? (Yes it does pause the music when you get an incoming call) The display is pretty nice, it's large enough and the menu options are pretty straight forward. If you don't like reading manuals this phone is pretty easy to nagivate by trial and error. It has a lot of bells and whistles that might seem useless, like the different lighting features, some are nearly identical. You can make your own ringtones with the MusicDJ. You can make videos complete with text and music soundtrack with VideoDj. This phone has a great camera. I would have liked a flash, but it does have nighttime mode and you can edit your photos ON the phone with PhotoDj. Adjust light, contrast, etc. Even add frames and clip art. The computer interface is beyond easy. You plug in the USB cable and treat it like any external harddrive. Sony even makes it easy for you and already has the folders for Music, Video, Ringtones, etc., ready. All you do is click and drop. It does allow for your own MP3 ring tones, as long as they are 35 seconds or less. As far as it being a slider and doing some accidental dialing, all you need to do is put it on lock mode. What that means is after a few seconds of non-use the keypad becomes locked and you need to push two buttons (one after the other) to unlock the keypad and dial, or just slide the phone open, but that feature isn't as filmsy as it sounds since the slider pushes back slightly so it doesn't slip open by accident. Overall a good phone nine or eight and a half out of ten.
great, not perfect.......2007-11-25
This is a great, little phone that's gotten a lot of attention. After having a phone with windows mobile for 2 years, this UI is a little less user friendly with extra steps necessary in some parts (sending a text message is slightly slower, but not much). Other than that the phone is great and so is the camera.
One person has commented on thinking it's a little flimsy, but I really don't feel the same way. The slide feels sturdy and the spring action is right about what you'd want in a slider.
Highly recommended for non power users and for general use.
Putting off on getting a iPhone 1st Gen because of this phone.......2007-11-24
I was up for a two year contract renewal for ATT and for months now I have wanted an iPhone but I've waited for the 3G, or at least the second generation, iPhone... my trusty SE s710a was still good but I figured if I have to sign a new 2yr with the iPhone anyway, why not get a free phone out of it?
After looking at the lackluster selection of phones by ATT, I was captured by the style of the w580i. So I figured I would give it a try... and I am not regretting it a bit!
This phone is much smaller than the monster I had before, and unlike older SE phones, the UI is very snappy. If you read most online reviews, they speak the truth. The keypad is small but after a little while you get used to it. T9 is much improved over my previous phone.
The camera is OK, nothing special. But it's better quality then the iPhone!
Call quality is superb. Feels comfortable in your hand during prolonged periods of time. I have had many friends say that the sound quality on their end is much improved over my previous s710a. The loudspeaker on this can get LOUD but it's good that way!
The Walkman function on here is killer! I works sort of like an iPhone's in how smoth it functions. There's a dedicated WKM button, anytime you need to go to the app, click it and you jump to the WKM program, click it again and you go right back to where you were!
The sliding function has been solid so far, only time will tell if it lasts. The keys have been reported to crack easily- one reason I'm not discarding my s710a yet... we'll see. But that's not a reason to not buy this phone. I love it to death right now and it will deffinately hold me over till I get a 2nd or 3rd gen iPhone!
BTW the SanDisk 4GB MemoryStick Micro M2 card works perfectly fine with this phone. And since the phones memory is only about 14MB, it's DEFFINTELY worth the extra cost to get one.

Excellent Small Radio.......2007-12-26
This is simply the best portable AM/FM radio I've found. It's very small and digitally tuned with presets.
For the non ipod owners.......2007-11-16
For the money, this little walkman is worth it. My gym is in the bottom floor of a condominium so the reception is not very good, but once outside it improves. It serves it's purpose.

Its an ok product.......2007-11-09
my only complain is that is does not get great reception. Not bad for the price but it would be better if the reception was better.
Good One.......2007-10-30
My son got me this little gem for my birthday last year, mainly because I was admiring his SFR-M37V when he was home visting.
The Radio works very nicely for my walks in the morning on AM or FM. What others say is true though it does not do well on real weak stations on AM during the daytime because of it small internal antenna. I would think this would actually work to advantage in a large metropoliton city though because it would not have as much bleed over from other powerful stations.
At any rate it receiver does work well and in the evening I listen to 1100 on AM in Cleveland from the St. Louis area, and also pick up all the clear station power house stations in New Orleans, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, etc.
Contrar to some reviews here I think this little receiver has excellant sound, so if you get a one that sounds bad send it back for an exchange.
This is a rugged little radio, my son has climb many of the highest 115 mountains in the east with this radio in the winter. He uses it for the weather band.
It seems to do very well on batteries also considering it is a digital radio.
All in all very good radio for the money. I would actually have rated this radio at 4 1/2 stars if possiable.

Forget using it for Pac-man.......2007-12-17
I bought this to go with two tv-games I just bought-both of which were NOT on the "incompatible" list... and let me tell you...
In regards to the "Jakks Ms. Pac-Man TV Game" I just CANNOT get it to fit in there (maybe I'll have to fiddle with the battery coils on the unit...) The spring-type of device this thing uses to "help" you install is twitchy... just as others have mentioned. I gave up after an hour trying to get it to fit into the thing, and believe me... that is no exaggeration of time.
In regards to the "Jakks Pac-Man Gold TV Game" I got it to fit after about a 15 minute struggle BUT surprise surprise.... the screw-holes in my AC adaptor DON'T LINE UP WITH MY UNIT! Even see the customer photo I uploaded! The black "nub" with the screw hole is too short to even match the holes on the device! So what did I end up doing? I ended up resorting to taping the AC adaptor to the unit... quick fix, but certainly not the solution!
If you planned on getting this for either of the 2 pac-man tv games I mentioned above... save yourself the money and get some batteries or find a different adaptor because this one will get you nowhere. It's a good thing that this was on sale at the time I bought it.
TV adaptor.......2007-12-07
I think this is a great idea and I am sure that there is someway to make it work. The only thing is that I can't figure out how to get it into the Jakks Video game I read the instructions and have a screw driver to fit but can't seem to get it to fit into the toy properly. So, I haven't been able to use it yet.
This is a great product!.......2007-09-15
I don't like batteries anymore. I have a really old handheld game, and until recently, I hadn't touched it in 6 years. Recently I found it and discovered that I had left the batteries in it all that time. A semi-dry crystalline-like substance had leaked out of the batteries and all over the game and everything that was sitting under it. What a mess. I even developed a strange looking bruise on my finger shortly afterward, and that may have been caused by contact with the substance while trying to clean up the mess. Who can remember to remove the batteries from something that they won't use for a while? No one is going to know if they won't use something for a while. That's why I don't like batteries anymore.
I have 2 of the Jakks TV games, Ms.Pac-Man and Super Pac-Man. I was going to order 2 of the AC adapters, but noticed that the screw hole on Super Pac-Man was further from the battery compartment than the screw hole on Ms.Pac-Man, so I didn't think the AC adapter would fit both games. I just received the AC adapter, and noticed that the thing with the screw slides in and out so it actually fits both Ms.Pac-Man and Super Pac-Man! It was a little confusing as to how to plug it into the game, but I think it's easier than it first seems, and you just have to plug it in, screw it down and trust that it will work. And it worked for me with Ms.Pac-Man and Super Pac-Man! I'm going to order a second one, so that I can play both games without having to unscrew anything.
Does Exactly What It's Supposed To Do.......2007-06-11
This is an AC Adapter for Jakks Pacific Tv Games. I purchased it for use with Ms. PacMan/Xevious and Commando/1942. It works great and I see future potential for retrofitting AC capability onto other 6v devices with the same battery configuration. Specific compatibilities are clearly stated on the product packaging. I may buy another.
Yeesh... what a pain.......2006-01-13
Looking for a way to reduce the need to change batteries on my TV Games® plug-&-play units, I grabbed the company's "universal" power adapter That fits into each unit's battery compartment. Well, ALMOST each unit... hence my use of quotations around the word "universal" a few sentences back. Due to either the way the batteries are aligned in some TV Games units, and different power/amp/wattage feeds in others, the adapter isn't nearly as "universal" as advertised. The packaging did give me fair warning about which P&Ps it won't work with, which includes the Atari Paddle, Classic Pinball, Bass Angler Championship, and the Kids Brand (aka NickToons, Disney, etc.) controllers.
Fortunately (?), I was able to use the adapter with my Atari (www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000645DD), ActiVision (www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001HYSG4), and Wheel of Fortune (www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0009FIN7I) units... granted I can get the battery compartment plug-in plate to behave itself properly, which seldom happens. The springs on the plate's sliding pins are strong, which means you really gotta push the pins in to get `em to stay in place. And if the plate's battery compartment screw isn't properly tightened down, the whole deal can pop out on you. On something of an upside: although it sticks out prominently from the battery compartment, the plate doesn't screw up the ergonomics of the TV Games units I use it with; it doesn't make the comfort level any better or worse. Still, you'd think Jakks Pacific could've taken a far simpler route and just included direct AC adapter jacks on all of their P&P units, and made a truly universal adapter for those P&Ps, so I wouldn't hafta go through all these battery compartment hijinks. But, I guess that's too simple an idea...
But if Jakks IS gonna run with this idea, I'm hoping they'll at least consider selling just the plate part of the adapter so I won't hafta pull the one I have outta one P&P and stick it into another when I wanna play a different TV Games unit. I did consider trying it out with other non-TV Games units that featured the same battery compartment alignment, but the only one where it worked was with the Commodore 64 P&P ()... although the plate was a tighter fit into the C64 compartment than I'd prefer. I'm a bit leery with using this with non-TV Games units, however, because of compatibility issues.
Speaking of compatibility: the adapter's ratings are as follows:
- Input: 120 Volts AC, 60 Hertz,
