Russ Walkowich's mymac.com Review.......2007-12-30
Over the years, I've used just about every type of mouse out there: Apple's one-button mouse, trackballs, corded and wireless, small and large, two button up to multi-button. I even used the Kensington Turbo Mouse (version 3) during the mid-90's and enjoyed its capabilities and ease of use. Fast forward to the present time and here I am using Kensington's Expert Mouse, the descendent of the Turbo Mouse. How does it hold up?
Out of the box, the Expert Mouse is simple to install and set up. Plug the USB cord into your Mac, go to Kensington's website and download the latest version of MouseWorks, install it and then set your preferences for what you want each of the four main buttons to do, set your click and scrolling speed and the pointer speed and you're good to go. Want to open up an application? No problem, set it up in preferences as to what button you want to use and off you go. Launch a particular URL... set it up and away you go.
The unit itself is designed as 5 3/4"L X 1 1/2"H X 5"W with the end closest to your hand being less than 1/2" in height. Kensington solved this problem of the unit being so sloped by providing the user with a padded palm rest that easily attaches to the low end and slopes your hand up into a more comfortable position. Once you've set up your Expert Mouse, the first couple of hours are normally spent just getting used to the feel and the capabilities of the mouse. The six-foot USB cable should prove to be more than enough for most users to set the mouse up comfortably on their desktop and not feel restricted.
Choosing what button on the unit does what can be an interesting experiment in itself. I found that I changed my first selection of button use once I became more familiar with the unit and discovered that it was far easier for me to utilize the top left button to scroll, the top right button to go back/forward, open in new window; the bottom left button to click and the bottom right button to double-click. The nice thing about Kensington's MouseWorks is that is does work and it doesn't cause any problems with the operation of the Mac, unlike some other software.
I found the trackball to be great, quiet, smooth and easy to use. The use of the trackball to scroll is just fantastic in its ease of use and control, and with the bottom left button set as the click, I'm easily out of the scroll mode and able to move the cursor to where I want and then use the bottom right button to double-click and open a link. The one issue that I did have is that the Scroll Ring just did not seem to work the way it should. I found that no matter where I had the scroll speed set to, in using the Scroll Ring the movement was jerky and at times, I wound up right back where I started from. Utilizing the trackball in scroll mode solved that issue right away but I was disappointed in the way the Scroll Ring just didn't seem to work the way I thought it should. Despite that issue, I would still highly recommend the Expert Mouse to anyone looking for something more than just a plain old mouse.
So to review:
Pro: Easy to use, easy to program, good number of programming options available to the user; use of trackball to scroll was great. Great warranty on the product.
Cons: The one problem that I had was with the Scroll Ring, just could not find a comfortable movement to make scrolling as good as it is otherwise.
System Requirements: Macintosh running OS X or later with an available USB port. Internet connection or CD-ROM drive to install the software.
Warranty: Kensington 5-Year Warranty and free technical support.
Highly recommended!
My Mac rating: 4 out of 5.

Fantastic Trackball But Its Almost Too Smooth.......2007-12-28
I would give it 5 stars but for my needs and preferences I find the new model inferior to the 64214 (and family). Mostly, because I like the weight and feel of an actual pool ball which you can use in the previous models. I also am not a fan of the new scroll wheel placement. That said, this made a great gift and its recipient couldn't be happier!
Trackball works beautifully, the scroll ring, not so good.......2007-12-21
This is my third Kensington trackball and the first of this design. I've tried a number of different pointing devices, and Kensington is still the best of the bunch for my purposes (and for my problematic and sometimes aching hands). The trackball part works beautifully and I love the fact that I no longer have to clean the little rollers. I nicked one star for the scroll ring. It's a nice physical design, but applications respond to it erratically at best, to the point that I've mostly stopped using it. Hopefully, it's just a driver issue and the scroll ring will eventually work as well as the ball.
Remarkably average mouse.......2007-12-20
I used this trackball on a Mac running 10.4 and it performs its basic functions as advertised. You can mouse around the screen and the four click-buttons are large and easy to configure. The optical trackball works.
However, the true disappointment comes when trying to use the scrolling capabilities. As you have read from the product description, the scroll wheel takes the form of a dial surrounding the trackball. This dial suffers from two inhumane issues:
1) The feel of the dial is atrocious. I would have hoped for a slick ball-bearing or smooth-as-silk (SAS) movement. Instead, Kensington delivered an unflattering plastic-on-plastic (POP) feel. Just as you think your fingers have applied sufficient force to overcome the static friction of the dial, some inconsistency in the formation of the POP causes the dial to falter. This leads to the second issue.
2) When you use the scroll dial, your fingers have little choice but to move the trackball. Take a look at the picture and try to imagine this: Suppose you want to make two full revolutions. Your scrolling finger must remain perfectly perpendicular to the dial. In order to make a complete trek around the trackball, you have to crimp your hand. In the event you cannot keep your finger perpendicular, it will naturally swipe against the trackball and move your cursor. What harm does that do? After each scrolling session you must stop to relocate your cursor. In certain applications, this may cause unintended actions.
Lastly, when Kensington moved from their last Turbo Mouse design, they eliminated their quick-launch buttons. Those buttons allowed you to perform virtually anything you wanted with a mere flick of your finger. They are henceforth gone.
At $100 (+/-), this mouse is horrifically overpriced. It's depressing how overpriced this is. I feel pity towards anybody who looks at this mouse online and opts to buy it based on Kensington's description. At a minimum, you should run to your local tech store and try it out in person before you buy it, because then, and only then, will you realize that it's not worth it. This mouse makes me sad.
Nonetheless, I must confess that the 5-year warranty has served me well. My old Turbo Mouse died on me eight times. Yes, eight times. Each time it died I just called up and they sent me a new one. I can only hope that the quality of this mouse has improved over the previous generations. Also, I'd be remiss in my reviewing-obligations if I neglect to mention that the software has never been an issue on my Macintosh systems. It's always been easy to install and configure. I'm not sure if that's a testament to Kensington or Apple, but there you have it. Lastly, the two stars are for it's ability to perform it's core functions.
I'd highly recommend this mouse to anyone who likes overpriced garbage.
Don't bother.......2007-12-19
The Wireless Turbo Mouse would seem to be a good bet, however it suffers from a very poor implementation of the scrolling ring when used on the web. The problem is it should advance the screen smoothly, but it's annoyingly jerky, and therefore continues to be annoying day after day, month after...ect. I called Kennsignton in an effort to tell them my thoughts, and was listened to patiently, but it was a waste of time. The point is, this company had a lot going for it years ago, but now seems to be coasting down hill. Also, the battery needs replacement about once a week, so if you buy this, plan on a recharger and extra set of C cells.

The ExpertMouse has been a great product for many years. Unfortunately, contrary to the Kensington website and even the information on the ExpertMouse package, it does not work properly with Windows Vista systems. Kensington MouseWorks software does not work properly with Windows Vista, and according to Kensington Tech Support, they will not be making it work with Vista. This means that all those extra buttons will not work. Kensington has refused to resolve this issue. If you have a Vista computer, this trackball is a rip off.

Great For Handicapped.......2007-02-06
I Bought This For My Daughter Who Has Limited Hand Function, Saw It At Rehab And She Loves It
Smooth Response.......2007-01-05
I have used Kenington trackballs for over 12 years and found them a lot better than conventional mice. This new model is much smoother than earlier versions but very sensitive. This makes it great for general use but it's difficult to aim it on small targets as the curser wobbles if you make the slightest movement. Unless the curser is in the exact spot a click doesn't connect and nothing happens.
You will find this model goes through batteries a lot faster than other models.
I've also had trouble on the Mac occasionally trying to connect to the Internet while the trackball is connected.
Good trackball for general use, smooth operation, best used in combination with a conventional mouse for precise work like Photoshop masking.
Expert! Wireless trackball.......2006-11-11
This device is excellent for me. I have limited space and could never stay on a mouse pad, no wires on my desk. I get much less had, arm, shoulder, and back stiffnes/soreness. I do use the wrist rest. Actually my doctor reccommended a track ball and my regular one became worn out to quickly. I also use this for photography work requiring some fine movements and it works quite well.
Kensington Track Ball.......2006-11-08
The best on the market. I have one for both work and home computers.

Get One If You Can Find It!.......2007-12-28
This and its brother (Model 64214), are my all time favorite track balls. I use these on Mac's all day every day for video editing, design, basic office work, gaming, and well everything! Although they dont have the smooth glide of the newest model, I prefer these because you can replace the light plastic ball with a heavy pool ball (I use an eight ball from a pool table) and the action is perfect:) Others must agree as I saw a used on on ebay go for close to $200!!!!
$100 cheap in long run.......2006-09-13
I had my first Expert Mouse failure. I, my wife, daughter, and granddaughter have used it for close to twenty years. (I always get the newest one.) I've used all of Kensington's wired trackballs since the original two button one. The 64213 is the same old quality with more buttons (eight years of near daily use and still trucking). The new all-optical version isn't quite as smooth and the "ergo-pad" falls off. (I don't expect it to last eight years either.) An extra little plus is that you can replace the track ball from the 64213 with a standard pool ball. I actually traded mine for an 8 ball with a local collector.
Kensington customer support has apparently gone off-shore and is definitly not what it used to be. If you buy a 64213, you probably won't need it anyway. (A caution: Kensington's cheaper track balls aren't any better than the competition.)
best to date, ergo needs a little work.......2006-07-30
I have to agree with some of the other reviews, but still this product is by far the best I've used -- mouse or track ball.
Observations:
1) Great for environment where lots of mousing is needed. Comfortable and roll speed is adjustable. Does not take a lot of pressure for buttons so hands do not get overused.
2) buttons can be set for best use and you can easily switch if ergonomics or physical demands require you to switch hands periodically.
3) scroll button and launch buttons are too far for easy accessibility. Probably fine for larger hands, but too far for me.
4) LOVE the wireless on this one. Signal does not fail even at a large work station, which means you don't have to cramp your work space into the spot close to the CPU nor do you have cords in your space.
5) Price is too high to be affordable for every work station. I'd love to have one of these at every computer, but I just can't afford it.
6) Long life, especially with prudent cleaning that FOLLOWS the DIRECTIONS. No parts fall out of the base when you flip to remove the ball for washing with mild soap, and the rollers are sturdy enough to take gentle cleaning to remove lint. Love this part cause everyone else in my office looses or breaks something when they try to clean their's.
Propfessional Design Office.......2006-03-08
We have an iMac with the intel chip. The "expert mouse" has been setting on a desk, unused, since we bought it (a month ago) because it works so poorly. The buttons can't be programmed to do anything and the curser speed can't be adjusted. Contacting Kensington is nothing but frustration - you get people who have no clue about the product or why you're calling. No down load is available to fix the problem.
We have been using Kensington track balls for about 15 years and were so satisfied with them that we bought this one, but probably won't do it again.
Both Thumbs Up.......2006-02-26
I've had mine installed for nine days now & it's made my computer work a lot easier, & the technical support response is quick too.
