Great mouse for the price.......2007-12-09
I ordered this mouse to use with my Powerbook four years ago. I have now used it with three computers total and it has finally bitten the dust. A part snapped inside of it after being dropped a few too many times. For $30, this is a great mouse.
EHHH.......2007-09-26
It says five stars, but I'm giving it three. I got this mouse in September (now it's December, so I have had it for 3 months. I am writing this because my opinion of the mouse has changed since the review I wrote before (below). Recently, the mouse just sucks. It barely works. And it's not the batteries. But what might be contributing to it is my Dell Inspiron 1521. The built-in Bluetooth is not always great at detecting the mouse. When it does work, it's alright. But on the whole it's just a huge hassle. I don't recommend it nor do I recommend Dell laptops. Here is my previous review:
This is an absolutely excellent mouse. However, it's performance seems to be very sensitive to your specific system and use. I bought this for my new Dell Inspiron 1521, which has a duel-core processor and came Bluetooth enabled. I wanted something small, completely cordless and plug free just to avoid using the touchpad. For my purposes it's perfect, as there is enough processor power for it and I'm not running any processor intensive media editing programs or what have you.
Physically, the mouse is of good quality. It feels comfortable in the hand and is not flimsy. I love the design as well. Perhaps the only downside is that it doesn't come with a USB recharger. As for battery life, I have only owned it for about 2 weeks so it's difficult to tell. (It hasn't died yet, so that's a good sign).
Performance-wise:
-The tracking is precise, random mouse drifting occurs occasionally but not significantly more than with the plug in ball tracker mouses. I love that I don't have to move the mouse a lot to get the cursor from one side of the screen to another. It's much better than those traditional ones that you'd have to pull all the way off your mousepad before it got you where you wanted it to go. Is that what the DPI indicates? Others expressed their concerns about gaming, but I don't see anything inhibiting about this mouse. It's fast and accurate.
-pairing was very easy. At first I didn't know how to make the mouse recognizable after waking it up and I was frustrated at having to pair it every time I wanted to use it, or wait 15 minutes for it to suddenly become recognized. But after reading some reviews I learned all I had to do was click it and it woke up again, instantly recognized by the PC. It seems that the method varies between computers, however.
The other aspect I love is being able to use it on any surface. Sometimes I like to use it on my knee or in a bowl of spaghetti, which is just great!
I highly recommend this to those with newer and more powerful systems and
looking for something simple and convenient of good quality. And the current prices listed here are great; it's an amazing deal.
Works as promised depending on computer.......2007-07-20
The first Kensington Bluetooth mouse was a gift for my wife. After seeing how well her laptop worked, I bought one for myself.
First let me say that her mouse works perfectly with her Sony Viao laptop computer. At first she made the mistake of turning off the mouse power. Its far simpler and only requires that one power down the laptop. When the computer shuts off, the mouse goes into hibernation. When the computer turns on, it start broadcasting the bluetooth signal. . .one only has wait for the computer for a second or two, then tap the mouse button which wakes up the mouse. The mouse then takes a second to find the bluetooth signal and its good to go.
Its comfortable to the hand and the batteries last so long that I don't worry about them. . .it sends a screen message when battery life is at 5 percent.
I was worried about getting second bluetooth mouse and operating both computers within range of each other. They work perfectly without any cross over signal.
There is a problem with the laptop however. The mouse works fine for a while, sometimes a long while, but the MY laptop (a Lenovo) has a signal problem and possibly a directional antenna. The mouse doesn't get the laptop signal and it acts jumpy if held in a certain area near the laptop. Sometimes the mouse looses signal. . .the mouse is still active, but the laptop somehow fails to keep up. There are work arounds for the problem but it means a less than acceptable performance from the mouse.
My suggestion is to make sure that you have a good return policy before purchasing this mouse. If your laptop has a signal problem, then you may experience problems. In which case I would return the mouse and forget about a bluetooth mouse for the computer.
Very, very annoying to use..........2007-07-18
I purchased this mouse because it was relatively inexpensive for a bluetooth mouse. Feature-wise it is quite lacking...only two buttons and a scrool wheel. But I figured it was okay because it doesn't cost much, right?
Well this mouse has other problems too. Most notably, it tracks very poorly. Even on a good mouse pad I get very jumpy action from the mouse. I've tested it out on three laptops: an HP 6400 laptop, an IBM thinkpad (t43), and a MacBook. On all computers the performance is about the same. The mouse is jittery and doesn't move smoothly across the screen.
Also, the mouse has severe pairing issues. It takes a long time to pair initially, perhaps 15-20 seconds. (Compare to my Apple Pro Keyboard, which pairs in less than 2 seconds.) Of course, this isn't such a bad thing if pairing is a one time operation... But this mouse forgets that it is paired all the time! Every few weeks I have to pair it again.
The last thing that bugs me about this mouse is the turn on time. When the mouse has gone to sleep (after a period of inactivity), it takes considerable work to turn it on again. Sometimes I just have to click one of the buttons and wait about 5 seconds. But sometimes that doesn't do anything. Sometimes I click several buttons, toggle the on/off switch, or push the connect button. When I need to use the computer, I don't want to have to spend the first 30 seconds troubleshooting the mouse. I want to sit down and have it turn on instantly.
I don't know if this is an issue with bluetooth, but I also have a $20 logitech wireless mouse that uses a propietary RF protocol (NOT bluetooth), and it suffers from absolutely NONE of the problems mentioned above. I have switched back to using that in the meantime, but the one drawback of that mouse is it requires an external dongle to operate. I'd like to switch to bluetooth so that nothing hangs off the outside of the computer.
Also, as mentioned above, my Apple Pro Keyboard turns on instantly and works flawlessly all the time. So I think the bluetooth technology itself is not to blame here.
I'm going to try buying a better bluetooth mouse because I suspect this is just a cheap POC. I would not recommend this mouse, and I will probably stay clear of Kensington products for ever. (Also had a problem with a Kensington power supply. I suspect that they have a very poor design department.)
Poor Battery Life, Sluggish Performance.......2007-05-26
This would be a great little mouse except for 1. the battery life seems to be about a week or less and, 2. quality of the bluetooth connection seems to fade in and out.

Nice!!!.......2007-10-21
Great little mouse. Tracks like a champ. I bought another one for work because I liked it so well.
Great.......2007-05-13
This mouse is wonderful. It works great. The packaging had read tape and sticky stuff all over it, but it was completely sealed in own packaging. I am very happy with this product.
Mighty fine mouse!.......2007-05-07
I bought one of these guys about a year ago as a temporary substitute for my main mouse, fell in love with it, bought another for my other computer, and recommend it to my friends who also love it.
What's to love? you ask: Well it's very comfortable in the hand, either hand incidentally. It works well without the need for complex installation, has a long battery life, especially when shut down between uses. But for me, the greatest feature is the manner in which it works on virtually any surface: smooth, rough, cloth, slick, bumpy or curved, the cursor moves across the screen smoothly. In a confined area, airplane for example, you can move it over your lap, the food tray, the arm rest, or just about any place with a few inches to spare. I highly recommend it.
My favorite mouse!.......2007-04-14
I purchased this mouse to be able to be more mobile. It is small, easy to install, and has great features. This mouse can be turned off to save your battery life. It has its own wireless adapter carrier on/off system, which it really nice. I liked this product so much, I purchased one for my daughter for Christmas. It is the perfect size and shape. I would highly recommend the 72239 PilotMouse Wireless Laser USB Min Mouse!
it's the little things that make life so good...........2007-02-14
Responsive, but not too responsive.
Works well on my mac.
My husband bought me one for my mac at home, and I liked it so much, I bought one for my work mac.
This is a great product that eliminates cluttery cords without the need for extra software. Plug the receiver into your USB port. Turn on the mouse, and you're good to go.

Good Upgrade Choice.......2007-10-19
I had orginally planned to get a wireless mouse, or maybe even one of the fancier Logitech mouses (mice? ;-). I finally decided I didn't really need all the fancy "bells and whistles" and bought this mouse by Kensington.
I think it's a good choice if you want to upgrade from the standard mouse that comes with most computers. The footprint is only slightly larger than a standard mouse but it's quite a bit taller, which I like. I have medium sized hands for a guy. It was easy to install both the mouse and the included "Mouseworks" software (you will need to load the software if you want to reprogram the two extra buttons on the side of the mouse). The software also gives you a number of options in the use of the mouse (more than the standard ones that comes with Windows).
It feels good in the hand and I'm satisfied with the product. I particularly like the feel of the wheel. It's not perfect however; the two extra side button could have been placed just a little better for my use and the overall shape could have been better (I wish there was a slight "rest" for the fingers on the right side of the mouse). These are minor quibbles however.
The two side buttons comes programmed for "back" and "forward" for viewing webpages. I reprogrammed mine to "double click" and "back" and that's been useful.
I don't know how long the thing will last since I've only had mine a short time. It seems to be a well-made product and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who's looking for a better basic mouse.
More than pleased!.......2007-10-18
A mouse is a mouse is a mouse is a mouse......or is it? I was apprehensive about getting something other than an Apple Mouse, but this Kensington mouse exceeded my expectations. It just has a good 'feel' to it. I like its design and the way it comfortably fits the hand. Kensington 72257 Ci20 Optical Mouse for PC or Mac
Great Mouse For The Money, Not For Diehard Gamers..........2007-10-03
After dropping over 40 bucks on a Logitech Mx518 which broke down after about a year, I did not want to spend a lot of money on a new mouse. After much "research" & reading the reviews here, I decided on the Kensington Ci20 (I was able to purchase mine for just over 20 bucks). The mouse is very responsive and has a great feel. This is primarily due to the rubber side grips and ergonomic shape. The Ci20 is larger than my "old" Logitech; consequently, it may not be a great choice for users with smaller hands. The mouse is responsive, but may not be "quick" & accurate enough for diehard gamers. If you are buying this as a gaming mouse, you may need to look elsewhere (I recommend the Razer Diamondback Acid Green). Even though the Logitech I used previously was buggy with my USB ports and the buttons gave out after about a year, it was much better for gaming than the Ci20. However, if you are not a dedicated gamer and are looking for a great mouse at a very reasonable price, the Ci20 is for you. I also would like to add the software is very easy to install, navigate and upgrade (unlike the Setpoint software from Logitech). Just plug it and and go. Overall one of the best mice I have ever used.
Great mouse!.......2007-06-16
I've been using Kensington products for over 13 years because of the quality, design and function.
This new mouse arrived last Wednesday and I'm glad I chose this particular mouse. The hand "fit" is perfect and the software allowing for any number of custom settings just adds to the value.
All of this plus a 5-year warranty? Simply amazing.
Best for the right-handed user.......2007-05-15
I got this mouse as a replacement for a Kensington PilotMouse which was the best mouse I ever used ---and wore out. Unfortunately, they don't make the pilotmouse any more and this one was the closest I could find. This mouse is advertised as being "optimized for right-hand use" and I am left handed. I am used to using right hand mouses but I admit I prefer a little less optimization which in this case means that the shape is a bit skewed and the extra buttons are on the wrong spot for me. If I were right handed, I rate this thing with five stars. As it is, four is all they get. What I like about the mouse; the size which just fits my hand, the responsiveness, and the rubber side grips. It also has a scroll wheel with just the right kind of tread. In my experience, it is important to make sure you don't use an optical mouse on a shiny surface as it seems to confuse them and this one is no different, but used on a matt surface, a blotter or even a taped-down sheet of typing paper it tracks beautifully.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as expected.......2007-09-05
When I received this mouse, I immediately plugged the USB plug into my laptop and began using the mouse on the arm of my recliner. The laser is super sensitive, and I found I could run the mouse over just about any surface and easily move the pointer around the screen. However, the mouse kept losing it's signal, and I had to repeatedly push the button on it and the USB plug to reconnect. This got old quickly, but was something I could deal with, because I was tired of using the touchpad on my laptop. Soon after that, though, I stopped being able to sync the mouse to the plug, and the mouse became useless. Now, I'm back to using the touchpad, and I'll probably just wait until I get a laptop with Bluetooth to try to go with a wireless mouse again. Overall, very good product when it works, which is not often, and not for long.
A good mouse.......2007-06-28
I like the mouse. It's got a great touch. The only drawback is it's size. I expected it to be a little smaller. However, that's a minor drawback considering the functionality.
When my husband saw it he loved it and so do I.
Horrible scroll wheel.......2007-05-04
Like others have mentioned, the scroll wheel on this mouse does not function properly, even when you install the Kensington software and even with a fresh set of batteries, and even when the USB receiver is right next to the mouse. The scroll wheel does not move up and down incrementally but jumps randomly or not at all. It is horrible.
Otherwise, this would have been a great mouse since is the pointing and clicking works fine and the rubberized sides make it very comfortable.
Makes me think fondly of my old dirty pre-optical mouse.......2007-03-15
Easily as jumpy and inaccurate as the dirty mice of yesteryear. I bought this one because it was slightly cheaper than it's Microsoft counterpart. Big mistake.
Died right away.......2007-03-15
I was looking for a wireless mouse that worked from a long distance to use on a computer hooked up to a TV. The box on this one said 30 ft, and it was the only one Best Buy had with that feature. I had never heard of Kensington, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Within an hour of taking it out of the box the laser tracker just died. Scroll still works, the buttons still work- so it has to be something in the tracking. New batteries and moving it closer to the receiver didn't help either.
It's going back tomorrow.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Mouse, highly recommend!.......2007-10-03
I have had this mouse for nearly a year and love it. I bought one for my boss at the same time who shares my opinion. She just came to ask if I would find another one for her new home PC, so I found myself here on Amazon. Seeing the reviews I thought I would add my own.
Problems? We purchased mouse pads specifically for "optical Mouse" use. they are slightly "slick" and much thinner than usual mouse pads. So, no jitter or erratic behavior because we are using a surface meant for this kind of mouse. Don't use the original pads meant for rollers, they have rough surfaces for traction! That simply doesn't work with optical mice, therefore the skipping problem some users have experienced. I can tell this is why one user found a sheet of paper worked so well.
Change your mousepad, you will find this is one of the most reliable and comfortable wireless units available, and a reasonable price. Tip, the USB remote sensor needs to be in the front of your PC so it can communicate, otherwise yes, it can give you problems. I believe this is addressed in the instructions for those who read them. No squeek, this mouse rocks!
Terrible. Do not buy........2007-09-16
I've owned this mouse for a few months and I outright hate it. The thing goes into sleep mode after 20 mins, which you would think would be a good thing to save the battery, but it takes FOREVER for the thing to wake when you want to use it. Congrats Kensington, you robbed me of my 30 bucks but it will be the last money you get from me. Oh yeah and when it did wake, it was jittery and difficult to use on any surface. Total JUNK!
Nice mouse with some limitations.......2007-08-17
The feel of the mouse is excellent. The textured materials on the sides and the weight of the mouse make it a pleasure to use. I have been using this mouse for a year and have never had jitter problems as mentioned in another review, but I have had several surface problems as has been mentioned. This mouse just doesn't like some surfaces.
Another big problem that I have notced: if you are using this next to someone using a Microsoft Wireless mouse, this one gets completely overriden by the MS signal causing erratic pointer movement or no movement.
Overall though, this has been a pleasure to use and I recommend it.
Worst Mouse Ever.......2007-08-04
Don't waste your money. I use it on a Mac it has a range of 6 inches usually it loses the connection. It's jittery and inaccurate driving you nuts. Tends not to be recognized and the battery life is extremely short.
It's not worth the money
Kensington 72314 PilotMouse Mini Wireless Mouse (PC/Mac).......2007-01-29
I bought this mouse because I travel and it is so convenient to be able to slide the usb adapter into the mouse. This is the second one that I have purchased. I gave the first one to my son.

Not powerful enough.......2007-08-23
This mouse does not transmit as far as it should. Try something else if you need more than 3 feet.
One of the worst.......2007-04-25
This mouse is one of the worst I've owned. Every now and then it just stops. I can hit the sync buttons all day, unplug the mouse, remove the batteries, etc and....... nada. It just stops working and then starts back up minutes or hours later.
I've only been using it for a month and it's done it more times than I can count.
I will not buy another Kensington mouse. This one is going in the trash and I'm heading out to the store.
What a pain.......2006-05-08
Cursor doesn't always move when I move the mouse. Cursor sometimes zips across the screen with little or no movement of the mouse. Sometimes the left click stops working. This happens even when my batteries are fully charged (and they're charged individually, not in pairs, so they're both fully charged). My guess is radio interference, but don't really know. Whatever it is, I'm heading out today to buy another mouse. I've had it with this one. :(
1-5 second delay in response.......2005-11-30
This is the worst mouse ever. While it feels great in your hand, and I wish more mice had rubber on their body, the functionality is horrid. When you move the mouse, it takes 1 to several seconds before the mouse/receive "wakes up". This happens EVERY time you stop moving the mouse not after a while of sitting.
I called their tech support, all they would do is tell me to use newer and different batteries. So I yelled at them and they sent me another set... and it did the exact same thing.
I want a mouse that moves when I move my hand!
What's worse? When the mouse actually does sit around for more than 30 seconds (maybe a minute? didn't time it but not long at all), then it really goes to sleep and you can't make it move at all unless you click one of the buttons... what sucks? It SENDS the "wakeup" button click through!!!
So if you left your mouse on "Buy Now" on a thousand shares of X to think about it and research it and decided not to buy it, you are screwed. You can't move the mouse off the button and clicking the button to wake mouse up will pass the click through and press on the button for you.

Hungry Mouse.......2006-12-16
This mouse goes through batteries like Hannibal through the Alps. It uses two AA cells in one week. Also, when the mouse is sitting still, the cursor creeps slowly across the screen.
Evil Battery consuming monster.......2006-11-14
When this mouse works, which is only sometimes, it goes through batteries faster than anything I own.
I had a logitech wireless mouse I bought in 2003, and it finally gave up the ghost in early spring 2006. That mouse used two batteries about every three months.
I bought this to replace it, and a microsoft mini mouse for my thinkpad at the same time. (the touchpad is not always friendly for all aps)
3/4 of the time, I have to use my laptop mouse because my desktop one is dead....again.
I go through high quality e3 lithium batteries (which I LOVE) at the rate of two every 10 days with this mouse.
I'm going to save my fundage by buying something that recharges...I will never buy from Kenisngton again.
Quirks but good for most.......2005-12-05
Pros: wireless, optical, accurate, fine tuning movement to fit the way my hand moves, works pretty much the same as other mice, easy install
Cons: Only for right-handed ppl, not good for solid color surfaces, an optical mouse pad is required to guarantee precise and predictable movement, somewhat heavier than most mice, runs on batteries, dust around the "eye" can affect movement (then again this affects all optical mice but this one doesn't have a good way of deflecting dust)
Overall value: Pretty good but it's not for the ones who are very picky about mice.
Lagging, hard to remove, and not for use with other mice.......2005-03-04
This mouse looks a lot better then it works unfortunately. I repair computers and my one friend got the Kensington 72129. The mouse was slow to respond with the notebook and also deactivated his touchpad. I installed it on my desktop computer to see if the lagging problem also occurred on my computer, which it did. I changed the batteries with ones I just bought, and that did not fix the lagging problem even with the mouse being only 5 inches away from the transmitter. I spent over three hours trying to fix the lagging issue. I was unable to bo so and told my friend to return the mouse and we will go out to get him a better one. The Kensington 72129 is set up to be the only mouse and completely prevents any other mice (including the notebook's touchpad) from even being recognized on the computer, because I tried to get it to work with other mice. When I uninstalled the drivers and the software and disconnected the Kensington mouse from my desktop and reconnected my corded mouse. Now my desktop keeps wanting to install new hardware for the Kensington 72129. So now I am going to have to figure out on how to trick the computer into not looking for 72129 lol.

Customer Reviews:
Nice look and feel. Horrible performance........2007-01-19
Although the Bluetooth version of the optical pilot (now discontinued) had the same problems with battery life, it tracked much smoother than this RF version.
When my Bluetooth model stopped working recently (after about two years) I replaced it with this. I regret that decision, as I am now looking for another replacement, capable of precision control.
Not worth the hassle.......2005-11-01
The only reason I didn't gave only one star is because the mouse looks slick (subjective) and has a nice grip. Other than that I'm very disappointed with the product.
To start off, it weights a lot, causing my wrist to hurt during my first week. I could call that part of my adaptation and strength building but still it was less than ideal.
Also, this thing eats batteries like a recycling bin! It was supposed to last 3 months on alkalines, but it didn't last 40 days using top branded batteries. I tried using rechargeables after that but it was even worse, around 20 days if I was lucky.
I agree with the other commenter that mentioned the weird clicking preciosion during text selections.. I felt the same way.
I have to admit that being my first cordless mouse much of the issues may be unavoidable, but if you like the lightness and reliability of your corded mouse do not switch to a cordless. At least, not to this one.
I'm going to try another cordless from another brand just because I really hate the mouse cord getting in my way.
Good mouse.......2005-10-14
This was the first wireless mouse I bought. At first I wasn't very used to it because the response time seems slightly different than a regular wired mouse, but now it's no big deal.
One thing that annoys me, though, is that I have a habit of highlighting everything, but sometimes this mouse won't highlight the very beginning of a line. If you don't share my weird habit, though, don't worry about it.
The rubber grip also makes your hand sweat a lot, and that's a complaint that many of the buyers of this mouse have.
Finally, the "midnight metallic" pattern of the mouse makes it look pretty cool, but if you don't really care about it, then just buy the exact same model that's just plain silver and that is much easier to find.
Overall a good, reliable wireless mouse.
