No, it's not red - it's green Okay, just about everyone has a red laser pointer. Heck, we even sell a fine one here at ThinkGeek. This pointer is significantly brighter (about 50 times) than a red laser pointer and because of its unusual color it is much more noticeable. I mean come on, a 532 nm green laser wavelength is obviously superior to a laughable 650 nm red laser wavelength. And unlike a red laser, the green beam itself can be seen in mid-air in dark conditions, not just the laser beam dot. This allows the green laser pointer to be used for pointing to star constellations (skypointing) and also just generally look cool as hell. The green laser beam dot can be seen at much greater distances than with a red laser pointer. Since green direct injection laser diodes aren't readily available, this pointer is based on the use of Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled (DPSSFD) laser technology. A high power IR laser diode at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd:YVO4 generating light at 1,064 nm which feeds a KTP intracavity frequency doubler crystal to produce the green beam at 532 nm. My kids love this thing. It's really cool to play with it when it's snowing. I can see the dot over 1 mile away on the co-op elevator tower. Eats up batteries fast though. lol

I gave one to my son who is a math teacher and he hasn't put it down since Christmas. The green laser is visible when pointed at something half a mile away and it's cool to see the beam all the way if there's anything in the air for the light to bounce off.
Not very durable.......2006-02-12
I purchased one of these just shy of three years ago (Feb 2003). I have taken very good care of it (it stays in a pocket in my briefcase when not in use) and used it several times a week while I teach. Over time, the silver finish wore off around the "on" button (apparently from perspiration from my hand), exposing the copper underneath. Last week, the button froze in the "on" position, so it is now effectively useless. The laser diode still works, however.
Also, the company offers "Geek Points" for future purchases that are supposed to be good for 36 months. I checked the site earlier this week and, while it's now only been 35 months, the ones I earned from this purchase are no longer on record.

I have purchased 3 of these laser pointers, the first 2 where ok, but the third one even though it was supposed to be stronger than the other 2 came with a defect and is far less powerful, the dot allso has a halo around it where i think the power is going, i dont know why these is but was a little dissapointed with these third laser.

This is a great laser pointer and the brighter wavelength of the green laser makes a huge difference. But to see the beam (not just the dot at the end of the beam) you need some sort of particles in the air for the light to bounce off of. Using the laser pointer with a little dust or mist in the air will make the beam clearly stand out. And if you are wondering, no matter how bright your laser is, without particles in the air you wont see the beam. At concerts where they use the big argon lasers, they always have fog machines near them to give give the laser something to bounce its light off of.

don't ruin your presentation with a dot no one can see........2007-08-15
I am a university professor. I give many lectures and seminars requiring a laser pointer. I dislike it when I attend a talk, and I can't follow the little dot. With this pointer, I am confident that everyone can see where I am pointing, and I don't worry about it. I wish more speakers would use bright laser pointers.

Fantastic for work or play........2007-09-06
This is an awesome laser pointer. I use it in a manufacturing facility to point out locations to run cable or install equipment near the rafters. The beam is incredibly bright and strong. I have also used it for star-gazing and it appears to touch the star. However, it is not the best for use in PowerPoint presentations. The beam is so bright it hurts the eyes at close distance and completely takes the focus off of the presentation. Other than that, I've had it for 4 months and still going strong on the Toshiba batteries that were included (with regular use).
fantastic laser pointer.......2006-12-13
I was hesitant when my son wanted a green laser pointer for Christmas as I had seen several red laser pointers and felt they left one wanting more. I opened his package prior to wrapping and tried it out. Wow. I live in the country and was able to shine this thing across a 200 acre field to an abandoned barn and light up the entire side of the barn. It has so much power; when you shine it into a dark sky the dust particles floating through the beam sparkle and the beam looks as though it is disappearing into space. A fantastic gift for anyone interested in astronomy or who wants a superior laser pointer. There is no comparison to the old red pointers. Caution though, I would be careful giving this thing to a younger kid (
<12).

This green laser pointer is outstanding. I am guessing it is right at the 5mW level. Someone I know has one that was hand-selected for 5mW or greater, and this looks just as bright as the one he paid more for (granted, he picked his up last year).
Perfect for astronomers...very easy to see beam at night even if your eyes have not adjusted. Can see beam inside the home scattering off dust in its path. Can see easily see green dot on cement on a bright, sunny day.
