Excellent Replacement Keyboard.......2004-04-22
Almost thought the webtv would be thrown over the fence after contacting Sony and ascertaining that Sony no longer has replacement keyboards. This unit is actually better than the original; a bit larger and with convenient thumb indentations for ease in holding the keyboard. Price was actually less than the previous board purchased through Sears. Alas, the purchase of a Dell shall have to wait.
Best Customer Service.......2004-03-06
I ordered this keyboard as a gift to my mother, but due to shipping problems, I needed to track the order down with Web TV the provider for Amazon. Not only did they answer me within minutes, they immediately sent out a replacement until they could resend the original order. The two guys who helped me were Matt and Dave in Customer service. They were fast and polite. Within a couple of days my mother received the temp keyboard, with a beautiful note and a follow up of the original ordered keyboard projected delivery date. The Web TV customer service is OUTSTANDING! They are the example all companies should follow :)
SONY W250 Degrades with Time.......2003-06-29
I purchased Both the set top box & the wireless keyboard 3 Yrs. ago & worked very good;BUT, it is Degrading. Keys stick & set top Box is Failing. I tried to reach Sony but to No Avail.!! I can't seem to find Any Sony W-250 units. I would like to know if they still make them?? The ONLY set top box I can find is that New MSN-TV which the keyboard is 1/2 the size! This may push me into Finally Buying a computer!!!!
Webtv is the best........2003-03-28
And this keyboard does it all. I have the Magnavox version of the same keyboard. It works with webtv classic or webtv plus. I can flip the screen to go back to the tv program or move my pip around the screen while I am surfing the net or adding pictures to my web pages. I don't know how people put up with computers. There are no pop up ads with webtv and virtually no maintanance because all upgrades are free. I use a phillips keyboard and remote with my sony webtv plus unit with no problem. Also controls the volume and power of my tv. You can buy the newer version of this phillips keyboard from me. And it comes with a 90 day warranty.Happy surfing.
late to the gate... artist.......2001-12-07
although, many of my friends are big in the electronic industry, I have resisted being "taken in." I was the same with cable TV... now many of my favorite shows are on cable-only networks. Feeling I was missing a major resource, I finally accepted a WebTV from a friend. I am a big fan of the TV remote (am I alone?)... and love the wireless keyboard- though it tends to skip letters when I type too fast. Still, its like a super remote, and its been a very painless way for me to become familiar with the internet. I am on this site to see about purchasing one for my mother for Xmas- even more stubborn than me. Cross your fingers.

Works on ReplayTV Also.......2006-04-09
The WebTV remote code also works with my RePlayTV. I have the 5500 series and I believe it also works with the 5000 series. This is very handy for typing in the Find Shows function or Rename Show function instead of using the RePlay cursor to individually select each letter. About a dozen keys operate the various functions that are found on the RePlay remote, such as menu, channel guide, recorded shows, etc.
new keyboard.......2005-03-23
i had droped the one that came with my msntv unit so i ordered this one to replace the one i droped because it missed up i am still useing it till i get this one its the same one i have now but like i said i droped it and it doesnt work real well now but i love the keyboard will be glad to get the new one
Buy this RCA Webtv/Msn Keyboard.......2004-10-14
I bought this keyboard to replace my Sony keyboard. I have the Sony 250 model webtv unit and this keyboard works better than the sony keyboard. The keys are bigger and easier for me to see since I wear glasses it really helps to have the larger text on the keys. I also like the thumb holders on each side of the keyboard. This keyboard takes 4 AA batteries but I think they last longer in this keyboard than the Sony. I have had this keyboard over a year and it's still works like brand new. I highly recommend this RCA wireless Keyboard for anyone with a Webtv/Msntv unit.

Decent keyboard and mouse.......2006-01-27
I have received this set as a gift and used it for a week.
Pros:
The thing works just fine, the general impression is very good - nice look, nice touch, precise mouse that works equally well with or without a pad. Very important (at least for me) detail: the layout of Insert, Delete, Home, End, PageUp and PageDown is standard unlike most other wireless keyboards. Never missesd a keystroke or a mouse click yet. Nice additional keys for web surfing, media player, and stand-by mode.
Cons (minor):
1. Since there are no lights for Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock on the keyboard, you have two options: having several additional icons in the right bottom corner of the screen (which seems annoying to me) and not having them at all.
2. The layout of F1 through F12 bottons is not standard. Instead of 3 groups, 4 keys each, you have 4 groups, 3 keys each. Not so big deal, but you will confuse F4 and F5 etc at first. Took me a couple of days to get used to. However, this is definitely lesser evil than non-standard Ins/Del/Home... layout, found in other wireless keyboards (see above)
Good Design. Mediocre Implementation.......2005-04-27
-- GOOD --
* Design. I like the sleek rounded look to the keyboard. On the back are legs that can swing out to adjust the level if you're going to be using it on a desk.
* Keypress. This was a major reason for me buying the keyboard. The keys benefit from laptop technology. They are firm, but don't have much travel so they feel more responsive - less typing effort.
* RF frequency means that the thing doesn't cut out if you lose line of sight, but the responsiveness tapers quickly at about 10 ft from the reciever. I think this distance should have been longer, but you need to be reasonably close to your monitor anyway.
* Reciever takes no batteries (Keyboard and Mouse do, obviously)
* Mouse is very precise.
* Hotkeys, if you load a driver. One is user-assignable. Personally I don't use 'em, but they're there for your surfing pleasure.
-- BAD --
* Another reviewer said that the mouse eats batteries like its rodent counterpart goes through a block of cheeze. This is probably because it doesn't havea a low power mode. I have another optical mouse that when I don't move it, dims its light. I bet this would save batteries. Not an issue for me since I have rechargeables. But poorly designed
* The mouse flashes alot through the side. It's distracting.
* The unit I bought is defective: the keyboard battery contacts are loose. But I should have expected that: I bought an open-box unit to save myself 2 bucks. (Update: New unit works GREAT!)
Update (one year later)
* The replacment unit worked great for a while. Then the mouse cut out and no amount of resets or new batteries can convince it to get back to work. The keyboard is still working great, so I guess in the end I am getting my money's worth.

With a unique design that incorporates a QWERTY keyboard, as well as Bluetooth and a VGA (640 x 480) camera, the tri-band Motorola A630 combines everything you need into one svelte package. Quickly respond to emails or text messages, snap a picture and send it to a friend, sync your contacts from your PC via Bluetooth. The A630 can do it all in style.
Design
Click the image to get a closer look at the A630's features.
You can also see it in action. |
The A630 is not your typical clamshell. The outside face sports a keypad with power and selection buttons, as well as a 96 x 48 blue monochrome LCD screen that displays call information, signal strength, battery life and more. The phone's VGA camera is housed just above this display. Supplementary up/down buttons are present on the left side of the unit, as is a camera button for turning on the camera in a jiffy. There's also a 2.5mm jack for handsfree calling with a wired headset. A combined port provides USB connectivity (with an optional USB cable) and power charging.
What's under the keypad of the A630 is what really astounds. Flipping the phone open reveals a vivid 65,000-color 176 x 220 display with a landscape format. As mentioned, there's also a full QWERTY keyboard inside the cover, plus a large five-way selection button for navigating menus and controlling most of the phone's features.
Calling Features
The A630's phone book can hold up to a whopping 1000 contacts with multiple entries per contact. The phone also features a full-duplex speakerphone that activates automatically when the cover is opened for easy handsfree talking. Voice dialing lets you speak the names of your most frequent contacts for instantaneous dialing. Polyphonic ringtones with up to 24 chords are included and more ringtones can be downloaded from T-Mobile's t-zones service. Picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. There's even an included application, MotoMixer, that enables you to mix your own ringtones. For those times you want to keep things discreet, there's also a vibrate ringer mode. The phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.
Messaging, Internet and Tools
The A630 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging and Internet connectivity. When coupled with the built-in keyboard, you've got a mobile communication powerhouse. The phone features support for AOL Instant Messenger (T-Mobile messaging charges apply) and there's a built-in web browser for t-zones downloads and mobile web browsing. T-Mobile's t-zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.
With the A630's built-in keyboard, you've got a mobile communication powerhouse. |
Traditional text messaging, as well as picture, sound and video messaging, are also supported by the phone. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is supported if you want to use the outer keypad for text entry.
The A630 also comes ready to serve as a mobile email companion. With support for POP, IMAP and SMTP protocols, you can connect to your personal and business email accounts with ease. All you'll need is t-zones data service from T-Mobile.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the A630 including a voice memo recorder with up to three minutes of recording capacity, a calculator and currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. Use the A630's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth headset accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard via USB or Bluetooth, and this can be used with Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC.
Imaging and Entertainment
The A630's VGA camera features a self-timer function for those times when you want to be in the picture, too. Bluetooth connectivity can also be used to transfer pictures, sounds and graphics between your PC and the phone's 5MB of embedded memory. Screensavers, themes and wallpapers can be set to your tastes. The A630 is Java enabled, meaning it supports games and application downloads written on the Java platform. Games are available via the T-Mobile t-zones service.
Vital Statistics
The A630 weighs 4.3 ounces and measures 3.74 x 1.93 x .92 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4.33 hours of digital talk time, and up to 200 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 800/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

A630 handset, battery, hands-free headset, charger, SIM card.
Customer Reviews:
Great phone, lots of features, long battery life, but blocky.......2007-05-26
Have had this phone for a long time. It has very good service (about the same as any phone), but battery lasts a good long time, and has lots of great features. If you get MOTOROLA'S MOBILE PHONE TOOLS this a very fun phone. You can down load mp3s to ringtones, add photo wallpapers, and download your photos and video's from the phone. The memory is not removable to you are stuck with what you have, it is blocky, the web browsing is only WAP pages no true internet, but not bad, the keyboard is easy to use, the screen is bright, sharp and easy to see, bluetooth works fine. I would recomend for a texter, or someone who likes to take photos and likes bar phones.
Best Phone I've Had.......2007-02-01
I LOVE this phone. It is so easy to use and lasted quite a long time. I tend to be really hard on phones (dropping them, leaving them in the car when its super hot or freezing cold), but this one is really durable. After two years it finally broke and I wish that T-Mobile still sold this model, which for me is a really long time. I like the fact that it has raised buttons because it makes it easier to push. The flip function is very nice and it is still strong. A lot of other phones that flip in the same manner have broken and what not. I've gotten a lot of compliments on the phone and would reccomend it to others.
Good phone & Lots of Features.......2007-01-23
I bought this phone last year in March 2006. It has lots of features and really is fun to figure out and play with. Probably a great buy for under $200.00 (I paid $195.00). For text messaging it is the best due to the Qwerty keyboard and the keys are easily managed. The screens (inner & outer) are easy to read and very durable (I've dropped this phone several times). It has now shown a malfunction at the charger port (site where the charging device connects to phone)and charging now requires manipulating the prongs in order to get a good connection. A T-mobile rep. said it is a weak point in the manufacture of this phone. T-mobile did not support this phone for long so it must indicate that it was a problematic product. I write this review a year later in order to give the reader a thorough idea of a phone's performance. I am happy with the Motorola A630 and regret the lack of T-mobile support for it. Very complex due to amount features, but very user friendly. Very compact and durable. Has good size (about the size of 1/2 a 3-Musketeers bar) despite it's complexity(keyboard, 2 screens, 2 speakers, camera).
Its cute but it stinks :(.......2006-07-04
I love certain things about the phone. It has a keyboard so text messaging is soooo easy. The camera is decent too. But I've had it 13 months. 7 months in, the mic stopped working mid conversations and I'd have to call back. Than in a couple of weeks, went out totally. What good is a phone when people can't hear you?!
Then i got replacement... which is what I'm currently using. If I'm on the phone for too long (say a 2 hour conference call) my mic goes out and I'm sure this phone too will die shortly. $300 phones should last more than a year.
I love the keyboard feature and it will be hard to part with it but you can tell it's not a durable phone. The programming (on both I've had) will freeze up at times and like I said, the mics are terrible. People also complain that the reception isn't very clear when I'm speaking to them. With Sprint, I had the same cheap-o phone for 5 years. It was not hi-tech, but at least I could make calls... I mean.. that's the minimum you want a phone to do, right?
When T-mob sent me the replacement, that took an arm and a leg. First they said the phone was no longer being made because of too many problems (ya don't say!). They offered me an 'upgrade' which was a crappy phone they were basically giving away to anyone signing up. It didn't have half the features of my current phone. I'm not an idiot and don't appreciate being buttered up and being told I'm getting an UPGRADE!!! when I'm clearly not. So they finally tracked down a replacement.
In a few months... I guess I'll be phone shopping... again!
Boo. $300 phones should last and be able to make calls.
WORLDS WORST PHONE BUYER BEWARE!!!!!.......2006-06-14
If it was possible to rate this cell phone a 0 then I would...
I have had many cell phones over the last 10 years, and this by FAR was the WORST cell phone I have ever owned...
TMobile also BROKE A NEGOTIATED CONTRACT with me without any recognition or attempt to reconcile the contract(since I wanted to stay with them I told them that I would set up a 1 year contract and pay TOP dollar for this phone, because I wanted it so badly at the time it came out, they said after managment approval that they would give me one month of free service)... too bad you cant charge a cell phone company money if THEY break the contract... due to this now that my contract is up I am in the proccess porting my number, horrible horrible business practices they should be ashamed...
now onto the phone...
worked great for about a month until the jack on the bottom for power stopped working, then I tried replacing the charger and wound up having to buy an external charger... more money just to have a decent looking phone... dropped it once and got a crack on the outside display, the motorola interface is so incredibly counter intuitive who ever designed the OS should be shot... the blue tooth works great, however I get horrible reception EVERYWHERE while other phones(still tmobile) get regular reception, this phone drops calls like its going out of style... Most Java apps will crash the OS as well as AIM will crash the OS as well as occasionally writting Text messages will crash the OS... just about everything you do will crash the OS, Oh and after having it for just over a year it is starting to crash when the signal gets low...
I learned a 300$ lesson in buying this phone, and a much much larger lesson(in dollar amount) was learned from TMobile, just how exactly NOT to run a business...
This from a 3 year Family plan customer paying over 100$ a month for included services, one would think that 3,600$ would purchase you some kind of consideration and decency...
