5 out of 5 stars Oustanding. Add the Sensaphonics custom sleeves, and make them unbelievable!.......2007-08-25

I went from the E3Cs to these in November last year. I could not believe the improvement in sound quality: the tonal response is smoother and flatter, and the dynamics jump out at you. Really, REALLY good.

And then a friend recommended the Sensaphonics custom sleeves to go with them. He let me try his -- OK, the fit was not very good, and it was a little uncomfortable, but with the sound being delivered further down the ear canal, I was truly astounded by how much better the listening experience was. I was hearing stuff in the music that I just had not known was there. Of course, I soon made an appointment to get my impressions taken, and the sleeves ordered.

At a total of $570 ($400 for the IEMs, and $170 for the sleeves) this is NOT cheap. However, the sound is superior, noticeably, to the sound I get from my $2500 speakers driven bi-amped from my $4000 CD/pre/power setup (listening from the headphone jack on the pre-amp).

I really can't say enough good things about this combination.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!

5 out of 5 stars Shure E500.......2007-08-22

For people who are not satisfied with the free earphones that came with your ipod and for those who believe that listening to quality music demands quality equipments then the Shure E500 Noise cancelling Earphones are for you.

I plugged the E500 to my ipod and pressed play, the sound quality was beyond any I had ever heard from a pair of headphones. The best way to describe the listening experience would be , like having music wired straight to your brain. The isolators are very good in cancelling outside noise, it is so good that shure developed a voice port module that would enable you with just a flick of a switch, and the outside world come back in, thanks to a microphone embedded in the line.

Another downside would be that it has a lot of wires to contend with especially when the voice port module is connected. I find this to expensive for an earphones, because of its high quality. So if you are serious with your music and have the extra money, this would be worth every dollar.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Earbuds.......2007-07-17

I have owned the Shure E500PTH for 4 months now and would definitely spend $379 to purchase them again.

I use them mostly for going to the gym and working out with free weights, elliptical machine, and Stair Master. They nearly eliminate the clang from weights, noisy AC, and loud background music, and leave me with crystal clear, well balanced, full range music from my iPod. The cord is not microphonic and produces no added noise, even at a fast pace on the elliptical machine.

The E500PTHs are so clear that I can hear the difference between low and high bit rate music. In fact, I have gone back and encoded most of my CDs to Apple Lossless format.

As many other reviewers have commented, I can hear background instruments, vocals, and effects that I never knew were in my music.

I took the advice of other reviewers and gave the E500PTHs a 20 hour "burn in" with my iPod on 3/4 volume. I noticed a huge increase in clarity and tone after the "burn in" period.

I also read the manual for proper insertion of earbuds, and have found that the best technique for getting a good seal is to pull down on the bottom of my ear lobe while pushing the earbuds into my ear canal.

I do not use the PTH module since it is too bulky to wear at the gym. It is very easy to get the earbuds back in and quickly get a good seal. I tried the foam, hard rubber, and soft rubber inserts in different sizes, and have found the soft rubber to get a perfect seal and stay in my ear despite a fast pace and sweaty face.

These earbuds are very durable. They have been dropped, sat on, and sweat on for 4 months and still look brand new.

The accessory kit is awesome. I love the durable aluminum case. The included wax removal tool works perfect. There are many different sizes and types of inserts. And best of all, the included cords and adapters ensure the earbuds will work in almost any environment.

Over 500 miles of cardio and 100 trips to the gym and I am still in love with the E500PTHs!

4 out of 5 stars Very Very Good but for $500 should have been perfect.......2007-07-06

I own three iPODs and listen to music about 3 to 5 hours a day. It helps me concentrate when working (i do some graphic art work) and block out noise and it puts me to sleep a few nights a week when I have trouble. I listen to everything from "fuzz" (white noise) to classical music, jazz, rock, bluegrass etc. so I guess i am a good "reviewer" and I felt obliged to pass along my experience as it has been fairly costly to obtain and could save others a lot of time not to mention money. So here's my take. By the way i am also a product design engineer, not that it helps me be a better consumer but rather i tend to see things more analytically than many consumers. So much for qualifications - this is still just my opinion -

Having lived with ultimate ears super.fi pro 5EB (excellent bass) and before that the ultimate ears pro 5 both for a couple years now,AND having to replace the thin cord set on both three times - the last time - I opted for a pair of Shure E500PTH's their best earphones instead.

My reasoning was based on my previous experience with Shure's most excellent V15 type III series of stereo phono cartridges (what are those) from back in the days of "record players".

Anyone who could make such a tiny transducer that produced superb sound from plastic discs with bumps on them surely could make one of these ear buds. I also thought about there industry standard microphones. so I ponied up the $500 and gave them a try.

Well lets get the audio performance out of the way -I must note that It is hard to do A/B comparisons because you can't just switch between speakers. Changing involves pulling these guys out of your ear canal and stuffing the other set back in which is a bit distracting from your sonic memory

BOTTOM SOUND LINE - Yes they have excellent clear solid sound and decent bass response as I expected for $500 and they seem just slightly "cleaner with more separation both voice and instruments" than the UE 5EB's but with less bass (that's what the EB stands for i think - extended/enhanced bass so no big surprise there) BUT the differences are small and once I start listening with either one the music is so clear and enjoyable I forget any differences. But i prefer the Shure's

HOWEVER just as critically helpful in delivering that awsome sound was I suspecct the volume control. Since the frequency response of your ear varies with volume you can "tune in" the best sounding sweet spot by adjusting the volume - and with your iPod up all the way this control can either whisper or blow your eardrums out. (in fact Shure puts a warning paper in the box advising you to listen at the lowest level - which sounds the best anyway to me)

LET ME QUALIFY THAT - They sound really really good once you get the right sealed foam piece on the earbud so your ear canals are really isolated. I have one ear canal slightly bigger than the other so it took a while, but i guess everyone's ears are different both individually and in pairs which is why they give you so many different sleeve.

Just like ultimate ears (UE), they come with an assortment of different sizes of foam and soft rubbery "sleeves" as they call them, to help you get that fit right. One thing they do have that ultimate ears doesn't is a moldable foam material on some of the sleeves that slowly re-expands when you squeeze it so it creeps shut and since it's solid I imagine it blocks out sound more effectively than the rubber umbrella design.

Another difference is the heavier three piece cord - UE's have a single thin and very light weight cord with a right angle plug that goes into you iPod at one end AND at the other end(s) a stiff bendable wire sleeve at the earbud which bends around your ear and KEEPS the cord over your ears.

The right angle plug keeps close to your iPod and out of the way and it is harder to accidently pull out like if you drop you iPod (heaven forbid - I do it almost once a day with no problems). They are very comfortable to the point that you forget there is a cord and that you have earphones on! AND IF THEY GO BAD since the cord plugs into each earbud assembly right at the ear - YOU CAN UNPLUG THEM and replace them, Lucky for me. The cords are only about $20 instead of the $100-150 for a new set of earphones.

Shure E500PTH uses three pieces -
1. a short headset cord that comes together at chest level under the chin ending in a female mini stereo jack plug
2. a 2 inch long thumb-wheel volume control which has male and female ends and a short cord ending in a bulkier right angle jack
3 a 2 foot or so long standard male/female straight steros mini jack cable that plugs into your iPod and of course sticks up an inch and a half or so bulging above your pocket and adding that extra length to your iPod

Now i guess you can plug number 2 and 3 in reverse order so the handy compact right angle plug on the volume control is at your iPod but that puts the bulky volume control right there also since the cord it has is very short (about 4 inches from angle plug to volume control)

ANYWAY - I thought the idea was to put the handy volume control right under your chin so you can just reach up and turn it down (or up if you like the next tune) which is what i like about the Shure E500PTH's

On the downside Shure E500PTH uses no such bendable sleeve - the wire is molded into the earbuds so i guess if it goes bad after the 2 year warranty your out the $500 but it seems more durable than the UE's. Because the cord just winds over the ear, I found the cord kept falling from around my ear and pulling at the earbud unsealing it until I pushed the cowboy-hat-like rubber cinch that holds the two cords together, up tight under my chin. Yee-Ha with a strangle hold - well it isn't really that uncomfortable but you feel it up under the chin like a cowboy hat cord.

BUT this stiff bendable wire that keeps the UE's cord over my big ears is right where my UE's cord frayed and broke down so maybe this could be a hidden drawback for UE's

Shure E500PTH's heavier bulkier cord, while more durable, is always there making its presence known, with the volume control dangling from it.

I guess that's the trade off and why my UE cords eventually broke - and in fairness I should mention that I frequently fall asleep listening to my ipod in bed so there's a cord stress test.

After listening to the Shure E500PTH's for a while and adjusting the volume with each song, I put my UE's (the 5EB) back in and they seemed to have a stronger bass but very similar sound not noticablly worse or better -both excellent.

so i guess if i could put UE's feather light cord on Shure E500PTH's earbuds and add a magic lightweight volume control AND make the cord DURABLE - NOW THAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE EARBUDS

1 out of 5 stars Great Sound , Bad Wires.......2007-07-04

I purchased these from Amazon, and used them every day since. Great sound, but the wires won't stand long. I got mine taped cause the wires inside began to show after the outer rubber began to crack. And you can't change the wires because they're not replaceable. The only thing you can do is to fix them the hard way or ship them back to shure so be replaced.

      Amazon.com Review

Conventional wisdom has long held that bigger means better when it comes to headphones. The thinking has been that a larger headphone isolates and covers the ear, letting it experience sounds more fully. Shure's E5c earphones are on the vanguard of a new school of thought: Tiny is actually better. Shure has managed to cram dual-driver speakers into small earphones that isolate the listener from virtually all background noise. If you don't mind the secret service look, and you're ready to spend more on your headphones than you spent on your MP3 player, the E5c's won't disappoint. In this case, you really do get what you pay for.

      Design
While the E5c earbuds are larger than other earphone-style headphones, they're still stunningly small. The cord, which includes an inline crossover unit that separates high- and low-frequency signals, is thin and pliant. A bendable stiffening material is added to the section of cable that runs behind the ears, allowing the listener to loop the cables over and behind the ear-- a simple and discreet solution. The gold-plated, 3.5mm input connector has a low-profile elbow bend to minimize accidental unplugging and snags. Shure includes a detachable in-line volume attenuator that controls volume without the need to fiddle with your player or listening source. The attenuator did seem a tad larger than it needed to be and, because it is not built into the E5c cord, it must be plugged in at the end of the cord. More than one tester said, "Why not just change the volume on the iPod instead of this doo-dad plugged directly into it?" A solution that places the attenuator nearer the listener's chest would be a welcome addition, but it's admittedly a minor niggle.

In an effort to match the earphones to ears of all shapes and sizes, the E5c earphones come with a number of earplug "sleeves" packaged in what Shure calls a "fit kit". Our testers had little trouble finding a sleeve that felt comfortable. We especially liked the expanding foam sleeves that, like those foam dinosaurs that grow in water, expand to fit the contours of the ear canal.

      Lost in Sound
With the E5c earphones comfortably placed in our ears, we listened to a range of music genres encoded in both music CD and MP3 format. The most common response was, "Wow, I never knew this song had all these other instruments." Indeed, the E5c's have such dramatic clarity and frequency response that we were left wondering how we'd ever listened to music any other way. They're that good. The earphones produce the sensation that the music is actually inside one's head. Bass vibrates the cerebral cortex, high ranges dance in the frontal lobes. While Shure posts impressive impedence and sensitivity ratings for the E5c's, the truth is in the listening and we were simply blown away. In loud, crowded environments such as airplane cabins and teeming Seattle coffee shops, we heard absolutely nothing but music, a sensation that is both eerie and liberating. Anyone who says there is no difference between high-bitrate MP3 and CD audio tracks should strap on a pair of these earphones. The difference is striking.

The earphones remained comfortable after extended use, especially with the expanding foam sleeves. Listeners with especially small ears may want to give the E5c's a trial run; they are somewhat larger than the other, more affordable earphones in Shure's "E" line. This concern aside, if you have the ears, and the earmarked funds, for the E5c's, you are in for a listening adventure like none other. --Joshua Gunn

5 out of 5 stars Great Customer Service from Shure.......2007-10-19

I bought the E5C earphones during summer 2005. Left ear stopped playing abruptly in early October 2007, no external, visual damage. I'm a neat freak, so take good care of my toys. Sent the broken earphones to Shure with an explanation I understood they were a few months out of the 2 year warranty, but would appreciate a warranty replacment because I had in no way abused the earphones and had been very happy with them. Got a brand new replacement pair about 1.5 weeks later, no questions asked. Shure is a providing an excellent quality/fidelity product and commensurate service to back it up. Happy in Pittsburgh, S. 3 out of 5 stars good, but far from great.......2007-09-28

I've been using these earphones for over a year now, and though they have good points they also have a lot of annoyances. I'm surprised when I see such glowing reviews for these, which is why I want to share some of my thoughts.

      First the good :
I fly a lot, and I do believe these are the best earphones I've ever had for the plane. In the past I owned a good pair of Sony noise canceling, then I went on to Bose noise canceling, then last year I purchased these Shures. The noise canceling phones go over the ear, which means they are larger and are taking up a lot of your valuable carry-on space. The Shure's can be coiled up into their little container and take up very little space. I can easily put them in my pants pocket. The noise canceling phones help to reduce the drone of the plane, but filter out little else. You'll still hear conversations and announcements. The Shures are plugged right into your ear canals, and you hear almost nothing outside. They are just like earplugs, with music inside.
I'll also note that they are very well built. For as many times as I've snagged the cord on something, they have held up beautifully.

      Now the bad:
Aside from using them on the plane or in public transportation like the subway, I find these to be my least favorite earphones for listening to music. Because they are plugging up your ear canals, you hear things like your own breathing, your feet stepping on the ground, the cord brushing against things. Try walking around with earplugs and you'll understand what I'm describing. At the gym, these earphones are terrible. Running on the treadmill with them you'll hear every thud of your foot, your heavy breathing, and the bouncing of the cord. Walk around outside with them and it's the same to a lesser degree. Try to use them lying back in a chair or in bed and you find yourself trying to control your breathing so it doesn't interfere with the music.

As for sound quality, they are the best in-ear phones I've had. However, they cannot hold a candle to on-ear or over-ear phones I own. I have on-ear phones that cost less than 1/8 the cost of these, and are far superior in sound quality.

My advice is to go with the in-ear phones only if you are purchasing them for very noisy environments such as airplanes where you do not want to hear anything going on around you. If you expect to use them in quiet surroundings, I think you'll be very disappointed. Personally I would not pay so much money in the future for in-ear phones, since I cannot use them anywhere other than a very noisy environment.

4 out of 5 stars For The Serious Audiophile.......2007-09-25

      E5C vs. E3C

For a year and a half, I listened to the E5s. The sound quality - especially the bass, is noticeably better than the e3s. Does the quality difference justify the extra money? I think so. But I also think that this depends on your financial situation. If you insist on squeezing every last ounce of high-fidelity out of your portable rig, than these headphones are for you. As I wrote in my e3 review, (having owned a pair at one point), you are doing yourself a great disservice by not listening to your music with as little or (preferably) no compression. My current codec (format) of choice for "ripping" CDs is Sony's ATRAC Advanced Lossless which plays the music back with all the bits of the original CD. You can really hear the difference in bitrates when listening through the E5 headphones.

The E5s are comfortable and do a very good job of isolating outside noise. Although they are larger than other models, it only took me a couple days to get used to wearing them. I used them on the subway everyday. The cord is a bit more rigid and less flexible than the other models from Shure.

Worthy of note: I am currently on my third pair of e5s; well sort of, I am now using the newer SCL5. The first E5 developed a wire fray, and the second, some uneven sound levels after about 1 year of use. Shure exchanges faulty products with a great 2-year warranty. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Get the fit for the base shure e5c.......2007-07-11

The best earphones I own and I own plenty. These must fit into the ear canal to get a snug fit and whoa the bass comes alive. I Don't like the stiff cord that is supposed to wrap around the outside of your ear. They are overpriced and at this time you should consider the shure e500 pth( smaller and more flexible)

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased With These.......2007-06-29

Well, I gulped and paid the price for these after my Shure E2s died. I was very happy with the E2s and they are a great value. The first thing you will notice with th E5s is extended bass and treble response. They are physically larger that the E2s and E3s in my ear, so if you have smaller ears look at the E3s or E2s. I work with the E5s and watch them take a great deal of musician abuse for years without breaking. After owning them for a few months, I think I can justify the price by avoiding purchase of other high end audio gear. These earphones combined with lossless encoding on an iPod is probably all I will ever need.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Shure's E5 professional sound-isolating earphones offer the richest possible listening experience. Dual high-energy micro-speakers capture the high- and low-frequencies, while an in-line electronic crossover separates these outputs. You'll hear your music like never before, where subtle details are brought forward for a lush, complete listening experience.

The E5s incorporate the first dual-driver, universal-fit design on the professional market. Developed in conjunction with Westone Labs and Ultimate Ears, they use proprietary low-mass/high-energy drivers. Supplied accessories provide a secure and comfortable fit within the ear canal while delivering full-range audio performance.

The E5's in-ear design, using foam or flex sleeves (both supplied), naturally blocks background noise. This permits lower listening volumes in loud environments--critical in safeguarding your hearing during performance or other activities. No batteries or extra equipment are needed for sound isolation.

The E5's micro-speakers are of Shure's highest-quality construction. Each earphone contains dual micro-speakers, separating high- and low-frequency range; an in-line electronic crossover optimally separates these outputs, while a level attenuator allows comfortable listening levels for any high-output audio source.

Because every ear is different, E5s earphones come with a pair of disposable foam sleeves, a pair of triple-flange sleeves, 3 pairs (small, medium, large) of flex sleeves, and 3 pairs (small, medium, large) ultra-soft flex sleeves to ensure a personalized fit. These disposable foam sleeves gently compress to fit in the ear canal. Once in the ear, the foam expands to form a tight seal. Once tightly sealed, the sleeves hold the earphones firmly in place.

The E5's cables pass behind the ear--out of sight and out of the way for comfort and discretion. Once formed, the E5's cables retain their shape around your ears, granting a secure, more convenient fit. Weighing only 1.1 ounces, the E5 is lightweight and comfortable enough for any portable listening application.

The E5 comes with a soft, stylish, compact carrying case, which allows for an easy, tangle-free way to store your earphones. The E5 also comes with yellow foam sleeves and a cleaning tool.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny !!!!!.......2007-03-03

After you adjust to these which is very quickly you will discover what many sound engineers already have that SHURE is dependable quality and these make listening to whatever device you choose to use a pure pleasure, unless the musics bad.Best earphones I have ever owned and used.Since my other half has a full level of the property devoted to a recording studio with top of the line equipment and records music I hate these earphones are even better than the soundproofing we have.

5 out of 5 stars pricey but the best.......2006-12-28

not too fancy when you take them out of the box (read: disappointing). difficult to get "personalized" i.e. the right earpiece (comes with a bunch) and adjusting the over the ear wire. BUT - when finished quite simply offer the best sound available

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance but expensive........2006-11-10

I first ordered a pair of Super.fi canal phones (they were cheaper than the E5c's with similar specs) but returned them after two weeks when I discovered a crack in the casing on one of the phones. At that time I simply wanted a replacement for what I had but they were backordered so I decided to cough up the extra cash and get the E5c. It was definitely worth it. Both of these models have 'memory wires' coming out of the canal phone body that is designed to be looped up over the top of the ear thus securing the units in place. On the E5c models, the part that fits into your ear doesn't stick out away from your head nearly as far (which looks better unto itself) and that also keeps the memory wire closer to your ear making for a smoother (easier to insert and more comfortable) fit.

As with any canal phone, sound reproduction is very dependant on the fit you can get in your canal. I was able to get a very good fit with the enclosed assortment of rubber, plastic and foam tips, better that I could with the Super.fi models. Additionally, I found the sound isolation to be very good. I like to take these to the gym with me when I run. My musical tastes are somewhat different than that of the aerobics classes and with these it is no problem to tune out the (loud) background without killing myself with volume. I have not had any trouble with these staying in my ears and sealed while running or while riding my bike even at interstate touring speeds. With the Super.fi model I had some fit issues because on occasion they would slip out of my canal.

As far as sound quality, I found these to be nearly flat. They are not too heavy on the bass but are definitely capable of reproducing nice lows if tasked to do so (again, you must have a good seal). Some popular Blackeyed Peas provides a nice demonstration piece and it sounds great! Volume on these guys is a bit of an interesting story. I like loud music (Metal, thank you very much) and for most headphones I could tell you exactly where the volume limmit is, but not these. I have had them up quite loud and I heard no distortion however, on a regular basis I find myself NOT cranking these up nearly as much as other phones that I've used. I simply don't have to crank these guys. The reduction in background (outside) sound levels combined with the fine reproduction of the E5c's translates to: I can get the musical quality that I am looking for without maxing out my source, which is not a trivial task on a motorcycle with straight pipes running down the interstate at 80 mph! Also, just for fun, try plugging these in to a monitor output and singing Karaoke. It gives you a whole new experience and these guys are right at home doing so. They are, after all, designed for musicians to use on-stage as personal monitors.

Ok so the bottom line, if you are reading this review (and I know you are), and you are not satisfied with the quality of the discount store phones, these will make you happy. They will cost more than the MP3 player that you are connecting them to but they really are great little phones.

      5 out of 5 stars E5c for the Pros.......2006-03-28

I play in a hardcore metal band and eventually got tired of not being able to hear for 5 days after a show, so i went on a search for the best sound isolating headphones i could find. Not only are the E5's the best at isolating sound, but they also sound amazing. It sounds like you are sitting right next to the person playing the music you are listening to. The sound isolation is so amazing that when a person is sitting right next to me i cant hear them sneeze even when the music is not playing! They are very lightweight and extremely comfortable. All the little extra plugs it comes with ensures that you will have a comfortable and secure fit no matter what activities you engage in. When using the triple flange tips it is actually hard to pull the plugs out of your ears! Thats just how secure they can be. I would definately reccomend these earplugs above all others for professional or recreational use.

5 out of 5 stars Just the plain truth.......2005-05-19

The neck and head are an areas of great forces and heat. About 25% of body weight maybe above the shoulders. I only thought about price and sound when I first bought an mp3 player. Well, $1000.00 and five pair of headphones later I came to understand that it is difficult to make a headphone that can deal with muscular force, heat and cord weight.

So if you want a phone that will block out background sound without stressing out your player's phone jack and pull on the cords that connect to your left and right phones it is the Shure.

If you want a phone that will not be ear warmers in the cold and too hot to put on in temps over 50 F then it is Shure.

Lasly, what if you fall asleep or jog or have to wear you phones in an area were the big brand name on the phone gets you the wrong type of glance. Shure solves all of that. You can sleep in them, run in them and they do not make everyone say hey that is the top of the line brand x%$****!

I forgot to say. The higher the volume the more heat your player generates and the more power your battery uses. The money saved in headphone, player, and battery replacement will pay off the Shures.
