Fast and very portable.......2007-12-31
Nice and small! Fast and doesn't need a separate plug and connection for power. Does both connection and power from the USB port. This brand is one of the top ones for external hard drives also from what I've read and hear from my techno geek friend. I only wish I had shopped around on price a bit more or waited a little longer, but such is technology. These are so hot these days it seems the price drops more every week.
Simple and Fast.......2007-12-30
I have had this 160 Mb drive for about a month now. I have used it without any hitches on three laptops, a 3 year old HP, a 4 year old Dell, and a current Apple Macbook. It is fast, simple to operate and I would recommend to to anybody looking for a backup drive. One good thing about this drive is that it is powered off the USB port so it has no power cable and bulky adaptor to plug in. The Macbook accesses the drive easily and can read any of the info copied off the PC's onto the drive and visa versa.
My only complaint is that I wish they had other colours instead of black!
Excelent but..........2007-12-29
There are basically 2 reasons why I didn't give this product 5-Stars:
1. The surface is very easily scratched; even as new, the product was already scratched.
2. The product came with a 10cm (4 inches or so) USB cable which is pretty much pathetic. I had to purchase a decent cable afterwards. (Which is like $2 at the most).
Otherwise, this is an excellent HDD for this price and if you don't care about those two points, I highly recommend it.
Good Product at great price!.......2007-12-27
After checking around, I found this to be a good product at a great price.
2 failed WD drives within 6 months........2007-12-23
DO NOT BUY -- I had two WD drives fail within 6 months. I'd give this zero stars if it were an option.
RUN from this company.

Power Problems.......2007-12-31
I bought the 80 GB drive, it was a great price, very cool and a useful product when it works; I have a ton of pictures, music and files in needed to back up. It looks great and performs well when you can get it to power up. The major problem with the drive is that it does not work with all USB ports. I have a laptop with a docking station and the drive won't run off the docking station. I have to undock and then directly connect it to my laptop. I have had similar problems with other computers. This can be annoying when trying to transfer files.
I don't know that I would buy another one...I think I will spend a little more money next time to try and get more reliable performance. Although, I have heard this is a consistent problem with other drives as well. I thought because of the small size I would not have this issue.
Easy to use, Nice portable size.......2007-11-26
I use this portable drive for my business. I have several other larger Seagate hard drives, but this one is a nice portable size I can throw in my briefcase. I have had no problems with it so far ,as others have mentioned. I use it between a laptop computer that is XP operating system and a desktop that is Vista Operating system. I would defienetely recommend.
Caution to desktop users........2007-11-03
I bought this to use as an external backup drive for my desktop computer. It's very plug-and-play, so it needs no setup time--just plug it in and it's ready to go in an instant. Drawbacks are that the USB cable is extremely short--only about 8 inches long, and there's no on/off switch. The short cable might be fine with laptops, but is a problem for my tower. I ordered a longer cable ($9 direct from the manufacturer), but the longest one still is only 21 inches long. The lack of an on/off switch means I have to tie up a front USB port (the rear ones are too inconvenient to reach) if I only want it running occasionally.
Proceed with caution (replace the cable and don't rule out an iPod).......2007-10-28
I'm replacing the 60 GB Western Digital drive, which inexplicably is currently priced higher than this 80 GB model (perhaps because it has the highest consumer ratings of all the WD USB-powered drives). I'm going with the 80 GB model this time, after a bad experience with the 60 GB model.
First of all, I've learned my lesson. If you plan to move this around a lot, get a soft case for it and handle it with care. I dropped mine (from about 5 feet), and it caused the female contact inside the drive to retract and become inaccessible. It's a long story, but the misfortune would not have occurred if Western Digital simply supplied a longer cable with the drive. The one that comes with the 60 GB model is 6" (I'll resist the sexual metaphors) and, since the 80 GB model is exactly the same weight and dimensions, I would expect its cable to be the same length. That's simply an impractical, unworkable length, expecially when you consider how most notebook computers are used. 12", maybe 18", would be optimal. Better too long than too short. So besides the protective padded case, plan on picking up a longer cable.
As for functionality, the drive performed flawlessly, a no-brainer for Mac-users, since no installation discs are required. But if durability is a major concern, if you're prone to "throw" things in your briefcase and toss your briefcase into the car, you may wish to take a look at the comparable Toshiba. A few bucks more and larger in dimensions, but it just "looks" tougher and more shock-resistant.
The Western Digital cable has a USB connector at the computer end and one of those tiny and insecure camera connectors (not sure what they're called) at the other end. I can see the reason for something so small and potentially problematic for a Canon Elph, but why can't it be a more substantial and solid connector for a storage drive? In fact, you may wish to consider (as am I) the largest capacity iPod, which uses a wide, lock-in connector at the drive end and can even exchange information with the computer via a convenient dock.
Bought a seond one!.......2007-09-27
This is a good product. I now own two of them. Easy to set up and use.

It works smoothly.......2007-12-28
A very quiet external drive and very good price for a 500gb disc.
Is fast enough and Im using it as a backup unit for my laptop.
Mine didn't work :-(.......2007-12-27
I am so disappointed with this item, so far at least. It didn't work, I purchased it based on reviews on Amazon and had high hopes for it. After setting it up the computer did not recognize it and after spending an hour on the phone with tech support, they said "it happens sometimes" and to send it back. It was a gift for someone and I am very embarrassed that it didn't work.
Tech Support said it was purchased at BEST BUY....Amazon didn't bother to tell me that :-(
I hope the replacement, if they give me one, works.
Solid Reliable backup!.......2007-12-23
This is a great esata drive that even comes with an esata pci card space hook-up bracket. Worked like a charm from the moment I hooked it up. Why waste time with usb or firewire when you can have a blazingly fast esata connection? Great for graphics, 3d animation, video editing -- any application where you need to move lots of data fast. It's also super quiet. The blue light is quite bright, but I like it. You can cover it with something if you find it distracting but it does serve a function by pulsing red into the blue when it is crunching data.
Rugged, reliable and full featured.......2007-12-18
It is nice to find an external hard drive in a rugged metal case with a built in cooling fan. Most such products are in plastic cases without a fan. Also, this unit is much smaller in overall volume than are the Maxtor and Western Digital external drives I've bought in the past. Finally, the inclusion of ESATA interface alone with the necessary adapter to make it work with a SATA based PC is a very nice touch. Unfortunately I'm using this one as the external drive for a Dish Network box, so SATA doesn't apply , but the drive also includes USB 2 connectivity.
Nice job Cavalry! Hi ho Silver!
Works with the HR21-700..........2007-12-18
I got this today to expand my DVR. I opened it up right away to make sure everything was secure inside, it was. I got a WD Caviar SE produced in July 2007. Better than the Seagate IMO.
Mine looked totally different, more like the CAUM37500, but it is labeled on the box in three places as CAXM37500 and once on the device itself. I read a couple of reviews that said this drive had a fan that could be turned on or off. Mine has no fan. The product description says nothing about a fan. sol.
I plugged the drive into a laptop to make sure it worked and the USB picked it up immediately. Next was the DVR, turning the drive on and plugging it in had no effect, had to power down the DVR. Lost all the shows I had recorded, but that's an issue with the DVR. It works though and that's all that counts. Good drive, gets a little hot though.

Bad decision.......2007-12-08
I ordered 2 of these since the price seemed pretty good. One for me and one as a Xmas present. The one for me was immediately used upon arrival, but totally died within two weeks. I got a red light on the front of the unit (indicating failure) and the "clicking" sound of death for a hard drive. Since this happened to mine, I didn't want it to happen to the other one that was gonna be a present so I sent them both back and got refunds. Be VERY careful if you get one. Who knows what may happen to it down the road (2 weeks, 2 months or 2 years).
one month life span.......2007-08-27
I bought two of these units for MP3 archival purposes. Both failed within one month. My sister had the first and just decided to pitch it. Cavalry replaced the second (my shipping to California), and it too has recently failed (IO errors). Great archive; time to re-rip my 2500 CDs. Avoid Cavalry products!
What a fiasco!.......2007-08-07
I just bought this drive a couple of months ago and have only been using it for about a couple of weeks and today I got the red light of death. It flickered blue and then red and then blue...I immediately set about copying the image files I had just been working on and I see that the files are being copied intermittently (when the light flickers blue - a few MB's of files copy, then it's red again and copying stops, then blue...). Right now, if it keeps going, it will take about 11 hours to copy this one folder of images - OUCH! As soon as I get as much of my recent work off as I can, this is being sent back and it will be the last time I buy a Cavalry Hard Drive!
Piece of Junk.......2007-07-28
This product is worse than useless. After I bought it, I read several reviews panning it. I bought it for backup of graphic files, especially photos. After I spent some time organizing my files and backing them up to the Cavalry external hard drive, I tried to transfer the files to another, internal hard drive. I kept getting read errors and having to start over. Fortunately, I was able to preserve the data by being persistent and copying small segments at a time. I haven't used the hard drive since.
6 months later, still working........2007-06-27
As i said, it's been six months and it's still working just fine.
The reason it gets three stars instead of four is that it seems to take time to warm up once plugged in... which I find odd, but that may be common to all external USB hard drives. I honestly don't know.

Firelite with no Firewire!.......2007-10-05
I own a few Smartdisk HD's. I bought this drive expecting it to have a firwire port like all firewire HD's. It doesn't. Other than that it is a great HD with only a USB 2 port and a great deal that is hard to beat.
Mac G4 laptop doesn't provide enough power thru USB.......2007-09-12
I've used a 40G Smart disk with Firewire for several years and it works great. I needed a larger drive for my music collection and since I only have one FW port on my Mac G4 laptop I got this USB model. It just spins and chirps because it doesn't have enough power through the USB port. It would probably work great on any desktop or a more recent Mac laptop. The product is great and I recommend it otherwise. Also, their return policy is fast, easy and done online. UPS picked up the package the next day without question.
this is NOT a firewire drive.......2007-08-21
this is a USB drive, it does not have FIREWIRE, if your computer can accept firewire (I know Macs do, not sure about PCs). The firewire drive looks identical to this drive, and I could swear that is what I ordered, but this is what arrived. BEWARE. Firewire is much faster, if you have the option you will definitely prefer the firewire drive.
flaky -don't buy.......2007-08-11
i got two of these inexpensive drives. they are cheap!!!
both of those work on and off on an ibm laptop. never worked on an imac (2007).
bought those for a friend and my daughter so they back-up their data/photos/songs ... big mistake, both (both! what are the odds?) are terribly unreliable. what a waste of time and money.
NEVER again.
Fantastic Drive.......2007-03-10
This drive is very fast and comes with free backup software that I use all the time. I am very happy with it. In fact, I'm so happy with it that I bought 2 more of the new 120GB version of this drive.
It's small size and light weight make it ideal for consultants like me who travel from site to site.

Houston, we have a problem........2007-12-10
I have had this firelite for about 6 months and one day it just wouldn't mount on the desktop. I use this on a regular basis - back and forth to work in a Mac based platform. It would light up when plugged in, but would not mount. I've searched google for answers - try it... you'll see I and many others have the same issue. Suggestions have been to change the USB cable to one with 2 ends because it uses too much power. It's a tragedy when you loose valuable work to to cheap technology. I would not recommend this to anyone - well maybe an enemy.
reliable, fast, and simple to use.......2007-11-28
I've been buying these drives for my Mac-based design department - we have 7. No problems with any of them. We all take the drives back and forth almost every day so that we can work on design projects at home and at the office. I put mine in a zippered pouch (no padding) and shove it into my bag along with everything else, so I would say it's pretty tough for its size.
For the student who gave these a bad review because 2 drives had the FW ports burn out - HELLO, it could be a problem with your computer!
Get One Now.......2007-11-08
I am in the market for my second one of these. Compact, quiet, and reliable. Keep your computer clean with one of these.
price/performance winner: reliable and cost effective.......2007-09-24
I own many of these and I recommend it to the many users I support. In a price/performance comparison, they are the best value around. For better performance you may want to build a SATA on firewire 800, but for the average user, a very good deal. Highly recommended.
failure........2007-09-10
after having this drive for only a couple of months both firewire connection ports went dead. and the drive would not mount. I returned the drive, lost my data, and received a replacement.
now, after having the second drive for a couple of months, again, both firewire connections are dead. drive will not mount... all data unreachable.
the drive was never dropped, was kept in a case... and handled very gently.
I am a cg student and need to travel daily with a large capacity drive.
this is not a reliable drive! do not look at it sideways or it may implode.

Excellent Hard Drive.......2007-10-02
I have been using the SimpleTech External 250 Gig and the SimpleTech Portable 100 Gig Drive for a little while now. They have added a year to the life of my hard drives.
From a programmer's perspective these drives have been great. I use them for running 4 different virtual machines using Microsoft's Virtual PC and Virtual Server. They are great for hosting the latest VPC instances Microsoft has been dumping out
USB 2.0 is a definite must though. They are slow as mud if you aren't using USB 2.0.
For digital image storage they are great. When we go on vacation I usually end up with about 7-10 gigs of photos.
I guess the best thing they bring to the table is mobility between my PC at work, my work laptop, and my PC's and laptops at home. I currently do all my work on them.
One thing to note is that the external drives can be bought for about $100.00 less than the smaller portable ones. The small one is much more convenient than the larger one to carry around, but for the price I decided to be a little inconvenienced. It was worth it.
Both have been worth the $$$. They have save me a ton of time going between different environments.

After having it for 2 mos, it just stopped working without any damage or surge occuring to it! All of our pictures and comp. programs were on it. One of the first questions a help desk asks you when you call to complain about your computer not working is: "Have you backed up your files?" Most people I know don't back up their files and cuss up and down when their hard drives fails and loses all their files. So BE PROACTIVE! This little handy-dandy easy-to-use external disk drive is great! I highly recommend it.

Cavalry CAUM37500 3.5" External Hard Drive 7200RPM 500GB USB 2.0 .......2007-12-29
The product didn't work right out of the box. It was very difficult to reach technical support by phone. Most commonly nobody answered the phone or they didn't return my call when asked to leave a message. I tried email and got help. I was told to reformat the hard drive but to no avail. I became very frustrated with the support and the fact that the product didn't work. Technical support said to return it to them and they would fix it. At this point,I didn't feel comfortable with the product and elected to return it to Amazon.I bought a Free Agent Seagate external hard drive and couldn't be happier.

Crashes my Vista Computer.......2007-12-21
There appears to be a serious problem with compatibility of this drive and my Dell XPS computer using a Vista OS. It was extraordinarily difficult to get the computer to recognize the presence of the drive, and it took hours of work with Dell tech support to get it to the point that it did. Thereafter, it could copy files, but with frequency its attachment results in a crash of the computer. This likely results (I have no evidence for this) from the general incompatibility of Vista with a lot of hardware, even with software generated by the manufacturer of the hardware that supposedly is Vista compatible. Hopefully the patch for Vista due out, I am told, within the next month, will help cure this problem.
One Year... no problems on XP.......2007-11-14
I purchased this product almost a year ago (9 months to be exact) and have held off on writing a review on this product because of some of the complaints pointed to extended use.
As I've said, I've had this product for 9 months now and have had no troubles with it and will be buying a second one in the next month. Doing 3D computer graphics and animation this product has helped conserve hard drive space and usage which is necessary when doing composite layering and rendering.
In the nine months, I have had NO, and I repeat, NO data loss. While the direct, on the drive, rendering time of animation is a little slow, than if I rendered on my main hard drive, the Firewire connection has proved stable and reliable.
Well worth the money I spent and will be spending more to increase my storage capabilities.
Avoid at all costs.......2007-10-29
Whatever you do, do not purchase this drive. If so, be prepared for a large headache.
The drive had problems being recognized by all of our systems. When it finally did start working, we transferred large amounts of data (which is backed up on discs, thankfully) and used it for a day or two. Then, it simply stopped working. After talking to tech support, they sent us to data recovery folks who wanted to charge a minimum of $700 to retrieve the data. Maxtor is simply awful.
Don't be fooled into buying this trash!.......2007-09-10
I have sent one back and Maxtor sent me a new one. Now it's dying and I have to send that back. There are no refunds. Some of the problems that occur with this drive are: Trouble mounting and unmounting drive. Slows down with streaming. Freezes up completely. The other thing is this drive is huge and heavy. I first lost about 500 gigs of data and Maxtor claimed they could retrieve it for me...at a minimum cost of $750!!! If you see people with 5 stars on their comments...it's only because they aren't quite there yet with these problems. This would not make a good back up drive or working drive at all!!! Buy something else.
total failure.......2007-09-06
We bought one of these for our department at a hospital. It failed. The replacement failed, and the replacement for the replacement failed. Rather than send it back and get a FOURTH one, we've voided out warranty and ripped it apart, and are putting the drives inside (which are still readable) in a different enclosure.
Something that should be a huge warning sign to anyone thinking of buying one of these (and which we will watch out for in the future) is that the drives are not user-swappable. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF A MIRRORED RAID ARRAY! When one of the drives goes bad, the user can swap it out with another one him/herself!
