Because all of Wacom's tablets are pressure sensitive--they literally feel the full range of pressure from the pen on the tablet--you get unparalleled control with your creations. Press hard, and you get a more opaque clone, a fatter paintbrush, or a darker stroke. Press lightly, and you have a transparent clone, a thin brush, or a gentle stroke of color. Microsoft Office OneNote is specially designed for note taking. With the Graphire4, OneNote lets you capture information in several ways. At the heart of the Graphire4 is a wireless, battery-free digital pen that offers 512 levels of pressure sensitivity for maximum control, two programmable side buttons for convenience, and a pressure-sensitive eraser for easy fixes. GOOD PAD, BAD PEN, POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.......2007-12-01
The director of the design group where I work has used a Wacom pad and pen for years--in fact, he uses it everyday. Till a few months ago, the pen had lasted four years. He recently bought a new Wacom "graphire4" pad/mouse/pen set. He knew that the set had a one-year warranty and didn't think he needed to send in a product registration.
It turns out the new pen started malfunctioning after only a month. The problem is that the rubber grip became loose, and now the openings for the side switches move around and overlap the switches so that they stay depressed. It is ONLY the Wacom pens with the RUBBER GRIP that do this.
When we called Wacom Technical Support to ask if they would send a replacement pen, they told us that their policy permits replacement only if registration has been sent within 30 days of purchase. AT FIRST, THE SUPPORT PERSON RECOMMENDED THAT MY BOSS BUY ANOTHER PEN. After many more minutes on the phone, he (whose name we know but will protect) admitted he was already aware that these pens have this problem. Presumably he is not the only one at Wacom who knows about it. They eventually said they would let my boss ship the defective pen to them for an exchange--BUT ONLY IF HE FAXED THEM HIS CREDIT CARD NUMBER and proof of purchase. Of course, he would not be able to use it in his daily work until he received a new one. Wacom has since made a special allowance for him, though it involves his having to drive a considerable distance to Wacom headquarters, in Vancouver, Washington.
Why they continue to sell these defective pens in their pad/mouse/pen sets is beyond me. If you are considering buying a Wacom pad that includes one of these faulty pens, or the pen by itself, beware.
Affordable yet powerful.......2007-10-07
I wanted to replace my 5 year old broken tablet and decided to purchase this one due to the brand(Wacom), the funtionality and price. This is a great value and performs as well and in some ways better than my old tablet.
I highly recommend it to any artist, amateur or professional, that is looking for a drawing tablet.
Surprised and pleased.......2007-09-29
I had used both series of Wacom tablets (Intuos and Graphire) at work about six years ago (albeit a far earlier incarnation of each type). At the time I felt that the Graphire wasn't quite up to snuff. So when I recently decided to get a tablet for home use and couldn't justify the expense of an Intuos, I bought this Graphire4 with more than a little trepidation.
Turns out there was no need for my concern. The Graphire series has come a long way since its original incarnation, and has adopted some of the functionality that was once limited to the Intuos series. I'm quite impressed and happy with this tablet, especially for the reasonable price! I'm sure the current Intuos series is still decidedly superior, but I don't feel at all limited by the Graphire4, and that's a lot more than I had expected to be able to say about it.
One last comment: I'm using this tablet with Photoshop CS3 on a Macbook Pro, and I've been more than satisfied with the functionality. Don't be put off by warnings about a lack of features on the Mac side ... for all of the purposes a tablet is designed for, the Graphire4 and Mac combo delivers the goods quite nicely.

I've had this tablet for about three weeks now and I have used it a ton! I mostly do art for my own personal entertainment or for digital scrapbooking. It is a lot of fun and easy to use and so much faster than using a mouse. I can actually draw a straight line now or follow a curve exactly like I want rather than the mess I used to create when using a mouse.
The 4X5 is DEFINITELY the way to go. The four corners of the workspace on the tablet (the actual 4X5 area) match up with the exact four corners of your monitor so having a larger tablet would mean that you would have to pick up your hand all the time, which would make you have to pick up the pen and then place it back down in the exact spot, and that isn't good when you are trying to do a constant line at a low opacity. I can comfortably place my hand on the tablet at the bottom and pretty much leave my hand in place and be able to draw from one corner to the opposite corner without ever lifting the pen. So nice! I used to really like Adobe Photoshop and had a lot of fun with it but now I LOVE Photoshop with my new Wacom Tablet. It's completely worth the money!
The only con I can possibly think of is that I don't get nearly as much work done at home now because I'm always playing and creating new digital art.
