Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars comfortable.......2007-12-26

Pros:
It's a comfortable mouse and is very, very sensitive (so you'll need to get used to moving with more subtlety). It takes maybe 10 minutes to get used to. It always glows green, has a clear laser on the bottom, and textured mouse buttons on the top.

Cons:
The buttons (3 on top, 2 on each side) were not as customizable as I was expecting - it limits which buttons can be assigned certain actions. They tried too hard to make their configuration utility look "cool" and in so doing, made it annoying to use.

5 out of 5 stars I love this mouse, period........2007-12-22

People see my M$ Reclusa keyboard and love the blue, then look over at my mouse and say , "...I like the keyboard." I don't care what people think, a green mouse is tight as hell, and the price is right. I love money and some other certain green things, so this mouse fits in great! it feels great and comes with awesome software to use to adjust and config the fine details. Works excellent with fps games. highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite mouse - semi pro wc3 player's view.......2007-11-13

Today the mouse market is undergoing a huge change. For many decades mouses have been treated as consumable supplies. People used them for about a year or until they break and then bought a new one for 10 dollars at a local store. But lately the high-end mouse market has been growing at an exponential rate, and now it has come to a point in which the high-end mouses take a considerable share in the entire mouse market. One of the reasons for this rapid change is the company Razer, which introduced many acclaimed gaming peripherals, including Diamondback.

There are more factors to consider when purchasing a mouse than just fancy specs. Other factors include :
ergonomics (how comfortable is it?)
size + weight (they usually go together. weight and size preference varies for everyone and also according to the task)
durability (how sturdy is it? usually reading other people's reviews gives you an idea of this. 70% of the time when mouse breaks down it's the buttons. 25% would be the sensor, and other 5% include cable issues, etc etc)
and finally, of course, price

Overall, Diamondback is a great option for gamers and people who want to try out a "better" mouse while not emptying their wallets. 40 bucks for a mouse ain't too bad when you consider that most of new Logitech mouses cost up to 70-100 bucks.

While it is clear that Diamondback is a big bang for the buck, its ergonomics is a debatable subject. First of all, unlike most of other competitor's high-end mouses, Razer traditionally favors the symmetrical design. This is both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on your point of view. If you are used to cheap generic mouses, you will feel home with Diamondback, although its grip is a bit different from other symmetrical mouses on the market due to its particular narrow shape and large curved buttons. It probably will take more time to get used to the feel of Diamondback if you have been using other right-handed only mouses, primarily those from Logitech and Microsoft such as MX518, G5, or IME 3.0, which are often considered "rivals" for Diamondback.

Diamondback isn't a small mouse, but it often feels smaller than it actually is because it is so narrow and curvy. On the side are the rubber grips to prevent your fingers sliding. The big buttons feel rubbery and absorb sweat very efficiently as well. It is one of ligher mouses on the market, weighing around 80-85g. This means less pressure on your wrist when using the mouse for an extended period of time. Some gamers prefer heavy mouses, however, so being light is not a absolutely good thing either.

On the bottom of the mouse are 3 teflon "feet," which enables sliding of the mouse on many surfaces. However, as a semi-pro gamer I use a good mousepad in addition to Diamondback (Icemat 2nd Edition to be specific), which further enhances the sliding and the accuracy of the mouse movement. You can even go further and purchase accessories like 'mouse surfer,' which you attach to the bottom of the mouse. They are pretty much the same thing as the mouse feet, and are absolutely not necessary at all, but if you want those they're available from professional gaming websites.

Durability is one of the questionable aspects of Diamondback. Many of my wc3 clan members use this mouse as well. One of them threw both Diamondback and Copperhead at the wall (with passionate anger) and found out that Copperhead is fine while Diamondback now suffers from button register issues. There is little validity to this observation, however. I personally never had any problem with 3 Diamondbacks I have owned, except that the 2 old ones had to be replaced because my bunny chewed the mouse cable. With frequent replacements, I haven't had the chance to test the durability myself.

Now to the performance itself - Diamondback never fails/skips under any "normal" condition, period, unless it is a defective product. It tracks movement at 6400 frames per second, which far exceeds the standard optical mouse's 1500 FPS. While high FPS results in a good accuracy, DPI stands for a totally different aspect - the speed. 1600 DPI also exceeds the standard 400 DPI. This means that at the maximum setting you will only have to move 1/4 the distance for your mouse to register same amount of movement. So if I needed to move 4 inches with my generic Dell mouse for the cursor to go from one end of the screen to the other, now I only need to move 1 inch for the same effect. This, of course, can be adjusted in extremely small increments with the Driver, so you will almost always be guaranteed the ideal speed for your need with Diamondback.

There are 4 color variations available for Diamondback. 2 original models featured standard red light for the sensor. However, the new blue and green Diamondbacks use invisible infrared light to track movements, so Razer could add LED to make the mouse glow in other colors than typical red. Blue Diamondback is also the first mouse in the world to use the infrared technology.

Speaking of sensor technology, there seems to be a common myth about laser mouses being superior to optical mouses, but that's not entirely true. Diamondback, for an example, is an optical mouse, and it's great. Laser mouses are more expensive, potentially dangerous (you stare at the sensor and you will supposedly go blind), and although they enable higher DPI possible, they fail miserably at fast movement speed.

Let me explain it more thoroughly. When Logitech debut the world's first laser mouse, they used a lot of marketing to make people believe that laser technology is ideal for mouse. People easily believed this because, first of all laser sounds more technologically advanced than optical mouse, and second, Logitech has an undisputable brand power when it comes to computer accessory market (primarily mouse). What they did not mention is that laser mouse only reads movement at the full potential on certain surfaces, which is quite contradictory to the marketing statement that claimed that laser technology offers a superior tracking ability which enables mouse to read movement even though gaps and uneven surfaces. Well sadly, laser sensor can only detect movement at full potential when the surface HAS gaps or is uneven. Testings have proven that laser mouses fail miserably if the hand movement is too quick, while optical mouses tend to detect movement even at a higher speed. What made this laser hype possible is that there still are basic optical mouses available that use 1990's technology. If you've been using one of those and then switched to laser mouse, it will obviously feel better. But the improved optical mouses are as good as any laser mouse available. In fact, the best mouse of all time, with most of the evaluation points based solely on performance, is Razer's new Deathadder, WHICH IS OPTICAL. Diamondback scored higher than Copperhead, and MX518 scored higher than G5. That just proves how ineffective laser technology really is when it is used for mouse.

Mouse manufacturers were playing with consumer's ignorance. With laser technology, it is easier to increase DPI. Obviously people will think 2000 DPI is better than 800. In fact, optical sensor has only managed to go up to 1800 DPI with Deathadder. Laser technology reached 2000 DPI 2 years ago and now Razer is about to release the new Lachesis which features staggering 4000 DPI. But there really isn't a need for 4000. If you want to buy one, it's up to you. But 1600 DPI is more than enough for 99.9999% of people, even if they're high sensitivity users who play fast paced FPS games on high resolution.

In the end, this feels more like a mouse guide than a review, but my point is that this mouse does its job wonderfully, and it costs less than most of its competitions. If you really want the slight edge over your opponents in competitive gaming, then buy the new Diamondback 3G or Deathadder instead. Deathadder, as previously mentioned, is the best performer on the market, and Diamondback 3G uses the same technology as Deathadder while retaining the classic Diamondback shape. What is disappointing about DB 3G is that it does not look as appealing as the classic Diamondback or Deathadder, but any sensible buyer already knows that function comes before appearance on these technological devices. Your choice. Enjoy!

Bought this 4 the ole man to play tfc and hl2. ok he said to tell you it is ummmmm awesome. hes been playing too many yrs to count(ole fart that he is) lol and he says this is the best there is. (hes had em all lol)when he first got it , it took some getting use to as it is lighting fast, even the buttons are touchy, but it only took him 2 weeks to master it so hes past happy with it and still brags about owning it. the green color was a plus for me as it matches his tower lights so now he can glow in the dark if he wants to big time. lol

5 out of 5 stars This mouse is amazing!.......2007-10-14

I bought one of these close to a year ago. And was blown away when upgrading from my Creative Fata1ity gaming mouse. However, about 3 months ago some clan mates of mine talked me into getting a Logitech G5. Well to say the least, the logitech went back into the box and back into my closet where it has sat for the past 2 and a half months. The sleek design and "Always on" technology far surpasses the G5 in all aspects. This mouse just feels better and downright is better when playing your favorite games. The pinpoint accuracy and ease of movement is second to none. When my Diamondback does bite the dust i will surely be replacing it with another. There is not a single other mouse out there that i have used that has even compared at all to what this little guy can do.
