Advanced Accuracy and Performance Features
Featuring high-definition laser technology, the Microsoft M03-00045 offers laser precision as you scroll through your files. Smoother tracking means less strain on your hands and wrists, and higher responsiveness means that you'll quickly notice an increase in your productivity. The mouse offers four-way scrolling with a tilt wheel that allows you to scroll up and down and side to side more smoothly, efficiently, and easily.
The entire scroll wheel tilts from side to side, acts as a button, and reacts to how quickly you roll the wheel to enable smooth, accurate maneuverability. For example, if you're working with a super-wide spreadsheet, you can tilt the wheel from side to side to scroll right and left, without having to click the sheet's tiny scroll arrows. And because the mouse relies on advanced optical technology, you can use it on nearly any surface without having to deal with the hassle of a clogged mouse wheel.
If you work with a lot of digital imagery, you'll love the mouse's magnification feature. With this feature, you'll think that you have a magnifying glass pressed against the screen. With a simple press-and-hold motion, the magnifier enlarges the area of your screen that fits inside the lens. You can easily adjust both the size of the lens and the level of its magnification. The Magnifier works in most programs. (The Magnifier is not compatible with Direct3D API in full-screen mode, media players, OpenGL, and Layered Windows. If you are using Mac OS X, the Magnifier enlarges text and images on the entire screen.) When it's time to touch up photos or fine-tune to some detailed tasks, the magnifier will quickly become your best friend.
The mouse also features advanced Microsoft technologies that help prolong the life of your batteries, which means that you can spend more time working and less time running back and forth to the store. The M03-00045 automatically enters standby mode when it's inactive for a certain length of time, which minimizes unnecessary battery drain. In addition, the light in the mouse's optical sensor illuminates only as brightly as is necessary to provide optimal tracking power. And finally, the mouse features a handy snap-in receiver that plugs in when you're ready to work, then snaps into your mouse when you travel, preserving battery life.
Of course, as its name implies, the Microsoft M03-00045 is wireless, which means you'll never have to hassle with cords again. An ambidextrous, ergonomic design that features a rubber-sided grip gives this mouse a cutting-edge look and feel that will complement today's latest technology. So if you work with a computer that runs Windows XP and has an available USB port, the Microsoft M03-00045 could be the mouse you've always wanted.
What's in the Box
Wireless laser mouse, receiver, 2 AA batteries, software CD-ROM, and user's manual.

About to chuck this product out of my window........2007-11-14
I'm not writing a long review, as I don't have too much time. I normally don't write reviews, but this mouse is horrific and I want to warn people. This is my second one (I thought the first failure was a fluke). The mouse sticks everywhere and my receiver is now sitting .2cm away from the mouse pad. Clicks won't ever register half the time, and there is absolutely nothing that could be interfering with this piece of junk. This is the 2nd TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED, and it is driving me insane. It's even difficult to send off this review as it took me 4 minutes to even click on the "Write A Review" button. The only reason this thing gets more than a star is that it is a perfectly great mouse for the first month or so, then it craps out. I've replaced the batteries over and over, and every month the transponder is moving closer to my mouse. I might as well have a wired one by now! I'm ordering my logitech as we speak, and I'm also vowing never to buy a microsoft mouse again.
It is good for its price.......2007-09-13
I bought this mouse last year from amazon. Now, I am still using it. Even though it does not have "off" switch it consumes less batteries than some wireless mouse. I droped it a few times but it is still working fine (Durable). The bad aspect of this mouse is its receiver. Its receiver is pretty big (Some people might think that the receiver is the mouse). I like this mouse.
This mouse works great!!.......2007-07-11
This product does what it's supposed to do and it does it well! I have bought this for the office and my home.
Wireless Mouse.......2007-01-12
I love my wireless mouse that I received for my laptop. It works great! The batteries last pretty long too. I am very happy with the mouse that I chose.
Good wireless mouse, but ..........2007-01-10
the reason i give this mouse a 4 out of 5 is because of a simple little detail, INTERFEARANCE !!! dont get me wrong now, I've NEVER HELD A MORE CONFORTABLE MOUSE IN MY LIFE !!! but at work i placed the cordless reciver about 2' away from the mouse and reception from time to time was good. Ok could be that i use the mouse at work and at work there's a good deal of R/F walkie talkies (the black heavy ones) and on a constant baisis theres a high level of R/F interfearance. in order to resolve this issue i had to place reciver 10" away from the mouse. But if you purchase the mouse for home use (or if your office has no R/F interfearance nearby) the reception is EXCELLENT !!!! Very Good Mouse !!!

Not the best on the Mac........2007-01-03
The cursor was kind of jumpy on my MacBook. I tried for a week and tried tweaking all sorts of settings, but eventually went with a Logitech.
Great mouse, long cord.......2006-11-10
Mouse is great. I was very surprised by the long cord that goes with the transmission receiver. Okay for desktop, not convenient for travel because of the cord.
A bargain.......2006-09-05
This is a great mouse if you buy it at the discounted price. The tilt wheel is fabulous. You don't have to worry about installing software because it is already installed in Win XP. I like that it is light and has extra buttons. Overall it is very good at least for me.
Poor wheel design.......2006-07-23
I think they really botched the design of this one.
I've had so many top-quality mice by Microsoft in the past that I'd no longer even bothered to comparison-shop when buying mice. I just figured, if it's Microsoft, it has to be good. This mouse shattered that illusion.
I use the mouse wheel a lot. Clicking the wheel to smooth-scroll a web page, or to open a link in an new window, are things I do many, many times a day. The wheel is the most important part of the mouse for me. Roll it, click it, it's got to feel right. Well, this mouse has two things seriously wrong with the wheel.
1) It takes about five pounds of force to click the wheel - far higher than any mouse I've ever used. Either that's either a serious design flaw, or I have a defective unit.
2) There's no tactile feedback, no "hills and valleys", when you roll the wheel. I loved the old Microsoft mice - your finger knew the wheel was settled into a valley when you clicked it, and it wouldn't unexpectely scroll the document as you clicked the wheel in the valley position. The Microsoft mice would scroll the document only as the wheel rolled over the top of a hill, never in a valley. (I'd come to loathe Logitech mice, because their wheels would register a scroll at unpredictable points, sometimes right in the valley.) Unfortunately, this new Microsoft mouse gives your finger no idea at all where it is - there are neither hills nor valleys. As you're gathering up that five pounds of force to click the wheel, the tiniest rotation of the wheel might scroll the document before it registers the click. So instead of middle-clicking that link you were aiming for, you've just scrolled it out of the way!
I won't even discuss the locations of the Back / Forward buttons...
Love it!.......2006-06-02
Can't believe it's only 13.99. It's big and comfortable, and the software is automatically installed in WinXP. I like the color too.

What a joy to work with!!.......2005-07-17
The mouse is the best I've worked with. The software included is very easily installed on a PC with XP, can't speak for other computer types or OS. It's ergonomically pleasent in the hand. The five function buttons are easily programmable, I especially like the forward and backward buttons. The wheel moves the curser up and down the screen slowly or quickly, per your choice and it doesn't have the clicky detents normally associated with a wheel on other mice, further, the tilt wheel works smoothly and flawlessly. Overall I find this mouse to be the best value to cost from others I've owned. In fact I bought another just like it for my wife's computer. She is very happy with my choice and so am I. You can buy more expensive but frankly I don't know that there are better.
I LOVE This Mouse!!!.......2005-06-25
Wow, another great piece of hardware by Microsoft, you cannot go wrong if you pick up this wireless mouse. Signal is strong, the mouse is very comfortable to use for hours upon hours, and the setup was a breeze. Yes, Logitech makes some nice keyboard/mice, but I always seem to prefer Microsoft's stuff. I don't want to support Microsoft but I find their hardware to be more comfortable and better design goes into their products. You will not be disappointed if you pick up this mouse!!!

There's a good mouse.......2004-09-25
I've been using this mouse for about a month. Installation was quick and painless. It took a little getting used to, since I've always used "classic" shaped mice and this one is larger and ergonomically-shaped. Now that I'm accustomed to it, I REALLY like the size and shape (fyi, I'm right-handed and have pretty good-sized hands). The motion tracks pretty well for a wireless mouse and the fact that the LED doesn't shine all over my desk is great. My favorite features are the additional buttons (programmable, but I like the default BACK and FORWARD functions) and the wheel that rolls smoothly (i.e., there is no physical "click"); this means no noise, no click/bounce under your finger and no eye-strain or headaches due to images or text "jumping" forward and backward when scrolling (web pages, for example).
Do Not Go With Microsoft.......2003-11-29
I was extremely disappointed. The software is designed to disable the touchpad on my laptop. Microsoft support (as always) is the worst in the industry. Even if you have to spend a little more, buy a different brand if you are looking for a wireless mouse!
Good mouse but still needs work........2003-11-04
Pros: Great build quality. The wireless aspect of the mouse works well and tracks well with almost no noticeable delay. The mouse is very comfortable and feels good in hand.
Cons: Doesn't side scroll in Visio for enterprise architects as well as other programs. Do research is you want to use this mouse for specific programs. Does not have a true smooth scroll like advertised. It just feels like smooth scrolling but still notches down and up in the window. The side scrolling works but has different speeds in different applications. Ex. It is slow in VS.NET and fast in IE. Pretty nerve wracking. You must have "Terminal Services" turned on or the drivers will not work. I'm sure this is an early bug and will corrected shortly.
Overall: I am happy with this mouse. I use it for development purposes and it work quite nicely I must say.

Dependable and Long Lasting Battery.......2007-05-30
We've had this mouse for a couple years now and we still love it. The battery life is the longest of any wireless mouse we've ever used (even the super expensive ones work provides). Looks great - easy to hold.

Great mouse.......2004-12-23
Wireless
I am not regretting spending the money for a wireless mouse. It's so nice being to move the mouse to a different part of the desk for a different position without any hassle whatsoever, or any cord being in the way. I had some problems with lag at first but after I hit the connect button on the receiver and the mouse it all cleared. I guess it was on a different channel.
Feel of Mouse
Everything about this mouse is perfect, but this was designed for a right hand for you lefties. The shoulder buttons are exactly were they should be. And the shape is awesome. The curve of this mouse takes getting used to, but it feels very comfortable even following long hours of use, after getting used to it. At first I had my hand down to far on the mouse and had to stretch to hit the shoulder button with my thumb. But after I moved up my hand I have had the best feel with this mouse.
Scroll
I don't use the horizontal that much but its nice when I need it. The scroll is hard to click as a middle button like one of the other reviewers stated, but it's not bad after using it about a week. And it does not activate the horizontal scroll like he said. And if it did like he said you could turn off the horizontal scroll. The smooth scrolling was very annoying because it didn't click every time you turn it. But now I love it so much lol! It is very hard to select weapons if you're a gamer. Like, using the scroll to select a weapon becuase it doesn't click everytime you select a different weapon. But once again you can learn to get used it. It definitely takes away fatigue from scrolling. So if you scroll a lot then this is the mouse for you.
Battery life
This mouse is supposed to give you excellent battery life (3x as long!). I haven't had to change the batteries yet, but I haven't had it long either. If you install the software that comes with it. It will show how much battery life is left and how great the signal is.
If I find any problems or wish to comment more I will update this review. Hope this help you decide!
Almost perfect.......2004-12-20
Everything is perfect about this mouse except the wheel button. It's a little hard to click the wheel button. But I've found that if you put your finger a little towards the top of the wheel instead of directly above the wheel and push in a slight angle (back towards you instead of straight down), the chances of scrolling when you mean to click are minimal.
All the buttons are right where you'd expect them ergonomically, and the scroll itself is very smooth.
Note that if you want to use this mouse w/ Firefox, you definitely need to install the IntelliPoint software and change the scroll click from its default setting to "autoscroll".
Can't comment on the battery life, as I've just gotten it. But Msoft claims that typical users can expect 6 months on a pair of regular alkaline AAs, which are included.
I have some rechargables, so doesn't really matter to me.
Wheel Button too stiff.......2004-11-05
I love the mouse, but the wheel button is way too stiff and you have to push extra hard on it which makes it move side ways and activate the scroll. Otherwise I like it. Will probably take it back and get one without a non side-to-side scroll.

Mighty mouse.......2005-02-28
My local Office Depot was blowing these out for $14.02, so I bought two - one for my computer and one for my wife's. Since our desks stand back to back, I worried about signal interference. It's not a problem.
Installation was a little troublesome until I went to the Microsoft website and downloaded the current version of the software. No problems after that. We both have Windows XP/SP2.
I'm not surprised to see another reviewer mention that they had problems using the mouse with Windows 2000. Jeez, NOTHING works with Windows 2000.
NOT compatible with Windows ME!!!.......2004-11-03
Included software - IntelliPoint 5.0 - is not compatible with Windows ME. IntelliPoint 4.12 from Microsoft web site IS compatilbe with ME but it's not written for Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 hardware - it was written for v1.0. Microsoft, get your act together - how hard can a mouse driver be? The way it's set up in my system now - IntelliPoint 4.12 with this IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 - is not acceptable - first, no side tilt is recognized with old driver, second, PS/2 port connection makes the mouse jump around sideways, no problem in USB connection but still it moves sideways somewhat slower than up and down. I just can't believe MS is selling this mouse without older Windows support. What a shame.
Best Wireless Mouse Available Today.......2004-11-03
First off, wireless isn't perfect, so you have to know that going into purchasing a mouse. That being said, this is the best optical wireless mouse I have used (and I have used a few). For the person complaining about having problems using it with a Mac, that's what you get for using a Mac ;p
Nice hardware, lousy software.......2004-10-21
I've been using Microsoft mice for years now. I recently "upgraded" from a regular wired optical Intellimouse to the wireless Intellimouse Explorer. I'm very disappointed and am considering switching back.
As one reviewer had mentioned, the mouse is very heavy and will take some getting used to in that respect. The optical sensor is not in the same location and the mouses response to movement will differ slightly until you learn to adjust. The wheel is very stiff and hard to use. The wheel button is also VERY hard to click.
The big issue I have with the mouse is the horrible driver software. The buttons are programmable, but only with a very limited set of options. You can't assign your own key strokes. The real deal killer for me is that the wheel button can't be programmed as a middle mouse button. What were they THINKING!?!. I'm considering returning the mouse and buying a Logitech or perhaps just use my old wired mouse.
*** Update ***
After downloading updated driver software from Micro$oft, the middle button works as it should. It's still very hard to click though.
I do like the tilt wheel function. It's makes scrolling from side to side a lot easier.

Less than one year of use now major problems.......2005-06-20
Update 12/2005: Well my side button stopped working long ago but now that I put in quality batteries I really get a lot of use out of this mouse and it is very effecient, accurate. of course it is my home pc which get used just a few hours a day on average. however i go months using 2 nmh AA rechargables and i get no battery leakage and it's weird but i go so long in between battery changes i cant even remember when the last time i did it.
i'm now considering buy the ms keyboard to because i can use that with the same receiver device (whatever that thing is called) the mouse is using. in fact they have a package deal with mouse so i might just go ahead and get a whole new setup even though the only thing broken on my current mouse is the side button.
in other words over alli have been very impressed with this mouse, at leats compared to my old tradition non-optical mouse.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This mouse performed very well for about 8 months then all hell broke loose. Batteries do last awhile however after the first time I noticed problems I opened up the battery compartment to discover the batteries were leaking. I spent a good 30 minutes carefully cleaning out all the battery acid and making sure the contacts were clean. Now batteries last just a few weeks or so and the battery meter in the mouse control panel always shows low battery level. Also the large left side button no longer works.
I am an I.T. professional, this is for my home PC which I treat very delicately and we do not have any kids in the house that are using the PC without adult supervision.
Too bad because the mouse worked very well and I love the accuracy that the optical pointer provides. But perhaps my batteries lasted too long, I never replaced them from the date of original purchase. I only use this PC in the evening and the weekends so that might explain the unusually long battery life.
Good and Solid.......2005-04-06
I bought this to replace an aging Intellimouse Optical and to see what the fuss is all about on the tilt wheel. Overall, it is a good solid mouse. It is lighter than the Intellimouse Explorer Wireless version 1, so the weight isn't a bother at all. Additionally, this mouse can run on only one AA battery, which saves even more weight. The leather top doesn't really feel like leather, but it looks classy against a rosewood desk.
The tilt wheel feels very natural in Excel and Visual Studio. It even works in FireFox. The wheel scrolls smoothly, which will feel natural too after a few minutes of using this mouse.
Be sure to download the latest Intellimouse 5.2 software from Microsoft to take full advantage of the mouse' features.
Recommended.
Microsoft Intellimouse.......2005-03-26
Works flawlessly, no problems at all
The scrolling is excellent....none of that click stuff like the older mouses.
The leather is not that "leathery", but is comfortable.
I have 3 minor complaints however.
1. The left click is a little stubborn at times, u have to somtimes change the angle you are clicking at
2. The scroll wheel button takes some effort to push down...
3. The forward and back buttons are a little high up for my hands, but other for most other people it will be alright
I have no problems with mozzila Firefox, the back and forward work great for it.
Overall i would reccomend this mouse to everyone.
Top quality software and all
A Bentley among mere mice..........2005-01-12
This is without a doubt the smoothest functioning mouse I have ever owned and I have had more mice than Mickey mouse. This mouse feels soft and comfortable and cradles the hand like a luxury car cradles you when sit in it. Everyone I have allowed to try it out has been impressed to say the least. As for those reviewers who claim this mouse made their hand ache, or wrist hurt... perhaps you should hold the mouse properly, you must have stood on your head to get this effect. I like this mouse so much I am getting another just like it for gaming on my laptop!
