Best Optical for the Prize...........2007-12-07
If you're not looking for fancy looks but great performance at a reasonable prize, this is for you!!
Basic Failure.......2007-09-13
The fundamental purpose of a mouse is to accurately move the pointer, a task this mouse fails at miserably. The pointer often jumps across the screen for no reason. I tried fiddling with the software settings, de-activating features, different mouse pads, no mouse pad, cleaning the mouse, and finally trying a new mouse. Nothing worked. I even tried Microsoft's recommended white-paper-mouse-pad "fix". Great idea Microsoft, that's just what I need, a paper mouse pad to accommodate your junk. (By the way, it still didn't work.) I've got a better idea: How about more rigorous testing of your hardware before unleashing it on the public?
Accurate, responsive and cheap.......2007-08-28
I have a more expensive microsoft optical mouse at home and I really like it. I decided to buy a second one for work to replace my mechanical mouse and decided to go with the cheapest version becuase how different can they be.
Well it turns out that they are very different. I have no problems with the speed and accuracy but the mouse itself is so light that the cable pull becomes really annoying and you feel that you are constantly fighting it.
Next time I will spend a little more to get the one model up.
A Good Optical Mouse Without the Bells and Whistles........2007-01-09
I recently bought this mouse and I have to say, I am pleased with its performance. It's a basic mouse, two buttons and a scroll wheel, with a wired USB interface. Works flawlessly. No complaints here.

Don't buy this!.......2007-12-05
This isn't basic, it isn't functional - it's a piece of junk. I talked to customer service, they finally said, "take it back to the store". Look at all the reviews that say this thing skips all over your screen and believe them.
This mouse is a piece of dung.......2007-07-18
Where should one start? 1) very cheaply made; 2) mouse jumps around eratically even when you barely move it; 3) Wheel is extremely jittery; 4) Wheel is also very erratic (you end up having to use keyboard if you need to move around from page to page more than a little). All in all a real piece of dung. Avoid at all costs. Even for $10.00 a poor purchase.
Finicky with surfaces, but there is a fix to the jumpy cursor problem.......2007-04-25
This is a moderately comfortable mouse that has very accurate tracking for its price... when used on the correct surface.
When I first used this mouse, I experienced the jumpy cursor problem which so many here have gone through. The mouse cursor would randomly fly off into the upper right corner of my screen, shaking uncontrollably for several seconds before control of the cursor was restored.
I discovered that the cause of this problem was a combination of two factors:
1. The mouse's optical sensor is easily confused by many surfaces. When this happens, the mouse's tracking is disrupted.
2. When the sensor became confused and sent certain data to the computer, Windows's "enhance pointer precision" function bugged out, causing the flying cursor problem.
Disabling "enhance pointer precision" under the "pointer options" tab of the mouse control panel in Windows XP fixed the flying cursor problem. However, even after disabling this option, I noticed that the mouse was having trouble tracking slow movements on my grey cloth mousepad, as well as my wooden desk. The mouse cursor would shake back and forth during slow movements.
I fixed this by using two sheets of 97 brightness rating (read: very bright) white printer paper as a mousepad. The mouse tracks flawlessly now during quick and slow movements.
I would recommend another mouse to anyone reading this, as computer paper doesn't make a very stationary mousepad, and Windows's "enhance pointer precision" feature is a nice feature when it works. However, if you've already bought this mouse and are reading this in search of a fix to your jumping cursor, I believe my instructions will fix your problem.
Mistracking really lets this mouse down.......2007-03-31
I have to say that out of tens of different mice I've owned, the Microsoft Basic Optical mouse has to be the worst. Before I get onto the bad points, let's get it's one redeeming quality out of the way. When it works, the cursor tracking is nice and smooth, and it responds well to fast movements.
Where it falls down though, is it's frequent mistracking, which sends the cursor flying off around the screen. Now, I could understand if I had a bad sample, but after going through Microsoft's online support and getting a replacement sent out, I find that it does exactly the same thing. As a result this mouse is completely unusable for me. Have you ever tried drawing in AutoCAD with a cursor which jumps around? Gaming isn't much better. Every so often you'll find yourself spinning around in circles. It can also be potentially disastrous to your data - what if during a critical confirmation message the cursor decides to start jumping around just as you're about to click?
I got the impression from Microsoft that this mouse is known to have issues. They suggested that I avoid the following colours for mouse mats:
- Red or colours containing red such as brown, maroon and purple
- Black
- Dark blue
- White blue lined paper
- Cyan
I tried a pale green mouse mat - no go. I tried a beech-effect desk - no go. I tried a sheet of white paper - no go. I found some yellow card (as this was the only colour "immune" from MS's list - no go. To be fair, it did track slightly better on the green mouse mat but I've never had any issues with my blue mouse mat with any of the other optical mouse I've tried, including the cheap £5 eBay jobs.
The scroll wheel is also of poor quality. Both of mine have a position around the wheel where the wheel doesn't register movement, so you have to roll it one more "click". Build quality varies too. The first mouses wheel wasn't too bad - it was pretty solid and had smooth scrolling. The second one can move a few millimeters side to side and is very clicky.
My other complaint is a bit subjective, but I find the mouse far too light. I prefer my mice to have a bit of weight in them, like the old MS Intellimouse. This thing gets dragged off the desk by the weight of it's own cord. It is far too light.
It's a shame that this mouse has the jumpy cursor bug because as I say the tracking is otherwise perfect - the fastest movement I can create with my hand, the mouse keeps up, whereas other older optical mice just spin in a circle for a second or so. The unfortunate thing is that the Basic Optical Mouse spins in a circle apparently randomly.
Good little mouse for my laptop........2007-01-26
I use it with my iBook G4 without any problems. And the price is right.

Does the job at a bargin price.......2005-10-08
We have three computers in our home. Two are logitech wireless equipped. This is our first microsoft wireless and it's connected to our Mac. We were relieved when we found it worked great on the tiger operating system. It's reliable and simple to install. No complaints, in fact we're giving them to family for holiday gifts.
Good combo for 20 !.......2005-05-18
I had purchased this item for $20 without any mail in,
For the given price its a decent keyboard and mouse, though the performance is not good when used for games.
Overall its a good buy for the price.
can't beat the 19.99.......2005-02-28
maybe this is not the greatest wireless keyboard/mouse, but for this price for the combo.... well i say this is pretty good.
Microsoft Basic Wireless Optical Desk Review.......2004-05-17
This is my favorite Keyboard/Mouse combination so far. If you use Microsoft Office, media player, IE, etc., then the changed function keys are very helpful. Pressing one extra button to get to the traditional function keys (a new function key-lock button) isn't much of a trade-off for having common functions like "print" and "spell check" always having the same dedicated key.
I became accustomed to having keys for music, web browser, email, etc, on a previous wired Microsoft keyboard. This keyboard has these, too. All the functions are configurable if you don't use the default MS programs. Like all the MS keyboards, the feel of the keys is the best that is out on the market. The mouse is also top-quality.
I've found battery life to be just fine. My batteries have lasted for months now.
Lots of issues.......2004-03-21
The entire thing is very microsoft-centric. Much of the functionality is lost on a non-msft platform, or if you are not using all microsoft applications (email, media-player, messanger, etc).
* Functions keys don't work normally. You have to press another special F-Lock key to get them to work. If you want to close a lot of windows, you can no longer hold the cntl key and hit F4-F4-F4. It's no longer that simple.
* They did away with the insert key. You can no longer do the shift-del and shift-ins to cut-and-paste.
* Eats up batteries, especially the mouse. Nothing will work correctly if the batteries get low. Once I had to pull the plug on my PC because the batteries got low, and I couldn't use my mouse or keyboard to shut it down.
* You have to be very careful about where you place your mouse and keyboard, they have to be able to make radio contact.
* It doesn't really eliminate any cables, because you have that "pod" thing.
