Easy and reliable.......2008-01-01
I've owned this hard drive for 2 months now and I havn't had a single problem with it. I use this hard drive for my extensive MP3 and movie collection. My last 500 GB external Western Hard Drive failed for some reason after 1 year. I'm a little cautious about this one. I'd like to get a raid hard drive setup so I don't have to worry about this one failing.
Awesome backup solution.......2007-12-28
Setup in 2 mins, low noise, auto shutdown by itself to reduce energy consumption. A+
Quiet, lots of storage, good price.......2007-12-26
The drive runs very quiet. It powers itself off at times of inactivity. The transfer speed is decent, can't ask for much more from a backup drive. The price is reasonable. It also comes with simple backup software right on the HD.
The only minor issues I have are 1) the included mini-usb cable is about 3 feet long, and 2) when your PC is not shut off, the drive still has its light on even though it's sleeping. This light is very bright in a small room at night. Other than that, it's very easy to use: just plug-n-play.
Does what it should.......2007-12-20
Being USB it's not going to be blazingly fast, but it is pretty fast for USB. MYbook Drives are great because they power themselves on and off, are silent, and don't heat up much.
Best bang for buck!!!.......2007-12-20
1TB of storage... nuff said.
Bought this as a companion for my Fujitsu U1010. I use it to keep my video files, mp3s and documents. No switches, small power adapter, quiet and looks like a hardcover book. The USB 2.0 is pretty slow but I imagine if it were equipped with eSATA or firewire port it wont be as useful.
The best part? I only paid $257 for it. If you're not worried about the warranty, just take the drive out of the external case and plug it in your computer. It still cost less to buy than any 1TB internal HDD by seagate or hitachi.

Works Like Advertised.......2007-12-31
I often buy new products and do so with some fear and trepidation as there are generally lots of hitches. This device installed with almost no problems. I had to manually configure the Belkin N1 router for the ports necessary for outside access. I had no problem adding the other computers in the house. It found my iTunes files and copied them to the server without a hitch. The server showed up in all installed copies of iTunes and songs can be played from the server. I added two 320 drives that I got for 60 bucks each in the empty bays and the server added them flawlessly. It appears to me that HP and Microsoft have hit a homerun with this device.
HP home server.......2007-12-29
Installed easily and seems to work just fine for the intended purpose...sharing files. It seems to do pretty much what other Windows servers do save for web site hosting, centralized internet access, and other such things, usually not needed in a home or small office setting.
I have experience with Windows servers, and the set up could be done by most computer users INHO.
Excellent product in a well rounded package........2007-12-28
Very impressed with Home Server, i have had it now for about 4 weeks, and love it. I have added some extra drives and have about 1.5TB of space. Duplication of data works fantastic, and using JungleDrive lets me have piece of mind for my critical items like photos and personal files.
Cannot think of a better way to do this, thanks Microsoft and Windows Home Server!
Dead on Arrival.......2007-12-25
I am generally a big fan of HP products (the computer I'm using right now is an HP) but I was sorely disappointed when I went to set up the HP EX470 on Christmas morning to find out it was "dead on arrival". When I contacted HP about it they told me that they were aware of the problem (4 red lights on the hard drives) but they don't have a replacement process in place so the only remedy is to contact the store I bought it at and ask for a replacement, which isn't much comfort since the EX470s are currently on backorder.
Chancy--no HP product support.......2007-12-25
Could be a good product, but I've had a file copy problem with one of the PCs on our network, where that PC can't copy to the server, though the PC has full access privileges. I'm sure it's a simple issue, but there is no HP support of the product. No email support, no live chat. The phone help is a joke: the first call resulted in 30 minutes of trying to find someone whou would recognize that this was an HP product, then the support person who finally got stuck with the call had absolutely no suggestions, then dropped the connection on me after an hour on the phone. The next call had me on hold for 30 minutes, with no pickup.
This is very unusual for HP. I don't know if HP wants Microsoft to carry the freight on product support or what, but I've been left high and dry.
Would not buy until the product has matured.

Works Well Documentation Needs Help.......2007-12-28
I purchased the Iomega 33872 StroCenter 1 TB a month ago and so far it works pretty well and is much faster on my 100MB wired network than I expected. The documentation needs some help but a good network knowledged individual can figure out most of the issues. It's small and easy to store but be advised that it's a bit louder than the average PC so I wouldn't consider it desktop for non stop operation. I ended up putting it in the hallway coat closett to avoid the noise.
All in all the StorCenter has been a good buy and a very useful backup tool.
Iomega 33872 StorCenter 1 TB Hard Drive.......2007-12-25
This is a fairly good product to use for data storage, file and printer sharing at home. However, it can be difficult to setup for a person who does not have an IT background. I also discovered that after reboot or startup of my computer, I have to login to the drive with a username and password, even after it has been mapped, in order to gain access to the device. I have also had to reset the device back to factory default settings once because it would not recognize the attached printers. However, this approach was successful and did not erase the previous configuration for raid or the shared folders. Despite the issues mentioned above, I still believe that the Iomega StorCenter 1 TB Hard Drive is a good product for home use.
Don't buy this drive........2007-12-23
This drive is worse than useless. Your computer must run Iomega network software to find and mount the drive, every time that you need to mount it. You have to re-mount the drive every time that you eject the drive or reboot your computer. If the power fails you also have to manually turn the drive back on, which is not easy as the power switch is a tiny button on the back of the drive in a hard to locate position. My drives USB connection was also dead on arrival, so I couldn't even use it as a USB drive. All in all a very bad design. Drive speed is good, when you have it mounted over 1 GB ethernet. And the drive is quiet enough to have sitting next to you. But these features do not outweigh the flaws.
The worst product of year - 2007........2007-12-22
1. Very Noisy - it is louder that two PC together working in the same room. I don't think anyone wants this working in close proximity from the sleeping area.
2 The print server capability is not able to be accessed from the Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Even so theier spec stated - "........
* Mac OS X 10.2.7 or higher ......"
Tech support when I called them admitted that they dodn't know how to deploy the priner access from Leopard and consider it is not computable with Leopard. (contrary to the info in the spec)
3. Useless documentation - the only one way to get some help is to search their website FQA. And as a fact, the latest Mac OS they mentioning is "Tiger".- version prior to "Leopard".
I have returned this product - that was the most successful and happy step in this purchase. Thanks to Amazon great service.
By far not the best NAS.......2007-12-21
I can't say it's really bad NAS but it really not good :)
Problems:
1. It's advertised as 1TB NAS but when I connected it (empty) I saw 908GB of free space, where is 92GB gone ? I was ready that it will miss couple of gigabytes but 92 ... It's not that small , you can still buy 80GB HDD and it still will be more.
2. Nosy , I believe it's not HDDs but fan , but anyway it's really noisy I can hear it the moment I enter the room.
3. VERY SLOW , it's supposed to be 1Gb networking NAS but it gives about 6MBps over 1Gb network and 4.5-5Mbps transfer speed over 100T network. I can't understand how this can happen on device with 400Mhz CPU , 64MB of RAM and 1Gb network card but it is. Probably software issue.
4. No firmware updates for this model, you can't even find original firmware at IOmega site.
5. Had a UPnP problems listing the AVI files - when trying to list video files it just shows MPGs , I contacted Iomega TS but they refused to support UPnP at all (actually I had a feeling that they had no idea what is it :)) so I found that UPnP server in NAS made by MediaTomb and contacted them, according to them it's a simple configuration issue all I need is to change config.xml a bit, but the problem is that you can't access/see system folders (etc, root, bin and so on on this NAS).
6. When set to static IP address NAS still take DNSs from the DHCP server if one exist on network.
7. Tried to create user called "root" - got a whole world of problems, after some error messages I was unable to share any folder on NAS - the folders tree just was empty. Reseting the firmware did not helped, but full reformat did (However it took me two days given the device speed to retrieve all the data ~600GB I already had put on it and after format to put it back).
8. Impossible to delete "guest" user. Attempt to do saw causes something that feels like "reset to factory defaults" - all settings get lost.
9. Sometimes (was not able to pinpoint exact reason) when changing something in settings the network group get reseted to WORKGROUP.
10. Had a problem with my Ziova CS505 player. the player can access network shares using SMB , all it's need is a "guest" account without password. I cleared the password on the "guest" account in NAS , player sees the shares but can't browse them. Works OK with a lot of other NAS and PC devices.
11. UPnP server inside NAS has an option to monitor event's (file added/removed etc) to update database (other options is manual "force update" and timed scan) called "inotify" , well this option never worked, any attempt to enable it caused error message and UPnP server restarted.
Good things:
1. Small
2. Very cool , it does not get hot even when coping files continuesly for 2 days.
So it does main thing stores my files but it's not the device I would recommend to anyone.

Big But Noisy For Some Folks.......2007-12-01
This one terabyte drive is big enough to tackle the needs of most any personal computer user out there. The ratings all over the Web suggest better than average life span and few failures out of the box.
If you're into the metallic aluminum look of a lot of electronics today, this will fit right in with your decor. The bright white light on the front of the drive (dare I say beacon?) stays lit 100% of the time, and if the drive is reading/writing data, the light flashes like an white LED strobe light. Some will love it and some will put black tape over the supernova white lamp.
It has a cooling fan at the rear end and holes on front, back and sides for full airflow. The biggest negative is the noise factor. The thing whirrs constantly at high speed. If you have an older PC with a traditional cooling fan, you'll never notice the G-Raid drive over the PC noise. But if you have a newer model, super quiet PC, or an iMac (which is absolutely silent), you'll be looking for a distant spot to locate the whirring G-Raid. Luckily the drive comes with a long (about 4') cable that can run either 400 or 800 FireWire. USB 2.0 is also supported. -1 star for the noise factor.

Customer Reviews:
fast, quiet, solid (so far).......2007-12-03
I've had one for about three weeks. I am very pleased. Mine seems very quiet, compared to my iMac G5 nearby, etc. Even using the Firewire interface the disk access seems noticeably faster than my slightly older LaCie "porsche" USB2.0 drive. Probably due to both raw disk access speed, and the RAID configuration, which is built into the hardware. (I like that.) I like the fact that the UltraMax has a USB hub built into it. You can apparently even use the USB hub while using the Firewire interface, if you first let the computer find/recognize the drive as a Firewire device. Anyway, I'm thinking of purchasing another.
A Beautiful Malfunctioning Machine.......2007-09-23
as a musician i purchased the Iomega Ultramax 1TB HDD to store all my samples and software programs in one solid unit. from the moment i connected the Ultramax to my laptop i've endured nothing but error message after error message. it could be a compatibility issue with Windows Vista but upon turning the HDD on i'm constantly asked for driver software, for over a week Vista would not recognize the HDD but when connected to Windows XP the drive can be seen and appears operational.
i contacted Iomega regarding the driver issue and all they could say was that there shouldn't be a driver issue, they offer no driver downloads and what little support they offer comes by way of a peer support message board filled with costumers as clueless and irate as i am regarding their own purchases.
after exhausting every possible solution i finally updated my laptops BIOS and i can now see the HDD connected to my laptop but i still receive a "please intall driver program" message every time i connect the Ultramax to my laptop and if i leave my laptop idle for too long the HDD stops being recognized and i have to shut it off and back on.
Iomega claims that since i reported that the Ultramax appears to work on my pc running Windows XP that they will not issue a refund nor send a replacement HDD, which means i'm now stuck with a machine that won't function properly with my music workstation.
Iomega also claims that the Ultramax works in Vista yet their own message board is flooded with costumers complaining of Vista compatibility issues and neither Iomega nor Microsoft are willing to address the problem or offer a reasonable solution.
the Iomega Ultramax 1TB is a beautiful piece of equipment but i'd prefer an ugly HDD that actually works.
Rock Solid.......2007-09-06
I edit videos on a Mac, which is how it arrived pre-formatted, and it has performed excellently. The case it rock solid, since I transport it from time to time for work at other locations. It's design will allow me to stack them when I need more storage. Only concern is that it uses RAID 0 to achive the 1TB size, I lose one drive and it is back to square one. That is why I will be purchasing a second drive for backup.
Sent preformatted for Apple, didn't work w/ XP, tech support $25 from 1st call.......2007-09-06
I had been very pro-Iomega prior to this experience, having purchased and used two of their 250GB drives and one 80GB drive with great success. This time they sent a drive formatted for use with an Apple and convoluted instructions on how to reformat the drive for Windows XP, which didn't work though I followed them to a "t," and neither their manual nor their website contained a support number. When I referred back to the shipping confirmation e-mail message and got a number to call them at, I was told I could return the drive or pay $25.00 to talk to their technical support desk. All of the first-line support personnel I spoke with were surly and clueless. The one I just spoke with couldn't identify me from the order number sent with the package which was apparently different from the order number they had e-mailed me, and took twenty minutes to process my return, misspelled my name, and probably misspelled my e-mail address in the message she was to have sent with my FedEx return form, because it hasn't yet hit my Inbox. The worst customer-support experience I've yet had.
Drive fan bad, sounds like a sick cow..........2007-09-03
Drive is fine except that:
1. Not compatible with apple airport extreme basestation due to block size issue.
2. More importantly - very noisy fan (probably damaged) sounds so bad I can't be in the same room.
And there's no obvious way to get support from IOMega without paying $25/call.

Great for Backups.......2007-12-28
Maybe not the fastest, but for nightly backups this drive can't be beat. It's cheap, quiet, and stacks well. Plus no wall wart (it's a mid-cable wart). Highly recommended.
This drive is great, It should not be trashed by people that expect it to be a USB drive........2007-12-26
After seeing a few complaints about this drive, I looked into it further and found that most of the complaints are without merit.
1 - You are buying a NETWORK DRIVE - these are not compatible with Leopard's Time Machine feature, this is because Time Machine does not support network drives. (Hopefully this will change in the near future.)
2 - The USB connection is really allow you to connect in a pinch, when you have no access to a router. It is not intended to connect and be formatted as a regular USB drive. If you need a local USB drive, get one, its cheaper than this one.
3 - Speed. The only way to get a faster than this, is to dedicate a computer to serving files, Install Mac OS X Server, that would be faster than the embedded server in this device, but at how much more power & cost?
I actually ran a speed comparison with my Mac Mini that is currently running Leopard -- file transfer were nearly the same, albeit the Mac Mini has a laptop drive in it, but it has a full scale G4 processor in it, far more power than the embedded processor in the LaCie drive
The Good Stuff:
1 - This is one of the few NAS drives that supports AFP directly. This is the feature I was waiting for, in order to go NAS. All of the Apple metadata gets stored without loss, Very Very good! I hate having to use an SMB connection to a FAT32 filesystem. That is not Mac, and will never replace AFP.
2. When I installed the drive, I plugged it into my router, opened Safari and opened its web page from the Bonjour list. After setting up all my users and shared, I then popped the CD into my computer to read the manual.
3. This drive does not require additional software on your computer, if your computer can connect to a router, it will talk to this drive.
4. The drive can be expanded, you can plug an additional USB drive into it, that drive then becomes shared also.
The Bad Stuff:
1. The web administration interface is slow, but since I don't plan on administering the drive every day, I don't think its a real drawback.
2. The drive never seems to spin down. Some people like this because its instantly available at a moment's notice, I personally would prefer it to to have a user adjustable sleep timer, to save energy and have less wear on the drive mechanism.
Overall:
Like the LaCie drives I've used in the past, Its in a metal case, it feels solid, and it works well, and its made in the USA!
Also LaCie supports the Mac, as a forethought, not an afterthought.
Lacie 1T Ethernet Hard Disk.......2007-12-22
If you want a reasonably large file server for a SOHO LAN, to use for file sharing or as a central repository for backups, this is a very good solution and it's quite affordable. It's quiet and the set-up was a snap. I'm very happy with it.
Not ready for prime time on Mac.......2007-12-14
I bought this network drive from Amazon for use with a new Mac running Leopard. The IP Config routine that shipped with the disk was out of date and the newest version from LaCie could not connect to the disk via USB, direct (to computer) ethernet, or to an Air Port Extreme hub. Under Network, the drive was tagged as being connected via modem. Nor could it be connected using the Air Port disk Utility. Last, LaCie offers no path to uninstall the code created by their installer. LaCie on-line support folks tried hard to help, but after more than a week of back and forth, I gave up and returned the unit to Amazon. Thank you Amazon for no hassle returns.
Short story: don't by this for a Mac running OS 10.5.1 until LaCie figures out Leopard and does a fix. This drive system was a a real disappointment from an otherwise good manufacturer.
Do NOT buy if you use Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).......2007-12-05
It does NOT work with Mac OS x 10.5 Leopard. Do not buy it! Network speed is extremely slow (more than 10 hours to copy 10Gig) and you cannot use time machine with it. You get no help from LaCie support.
Really frustating, waste of money.

Avoid the WD My Book Home Edition 1 tb model.......2007-12-12
I have have 500 gb model running on OSX 10.5 with no issues. The 1 tb model is problematic with quality. I have already returned 5 drives for various issues (Does not spin up 2x, Spins up but not recognized 2x, and DOA). Did simon says with tech support, swap cables, connected to diff CPU, diff OS (Vista, XP, OSX), diff interfaces, swapped out with existing WD My book drive(500 gb model). Uninstalled and Reinstalled drivers. If you still want to try it make sure you can return it. Because you probably will.
Do you feel like gambling with your data?.......2007-12-07
I bought three of these drives to use for backups for Macs. Opened one, hooked it up to an Intel iMac (OS X 10.4.11) via firewire and nothing appeared on desktop. Disk utility didn't see it; System profiler couldn't even identify the firewire device (though it saw something) on the firewire bus. I powered it off, tried the usb port and it doesn't even register in System profiler, much less come up. Opened the second drive, same thing: nada. Tried using my own cables, tried opening it on a PPC mini, a G4 laptop (all running 10.4) and a Dell Win XP laptop and no joy. I have had 1.5 TB external RAID6 firewire/usb enclosures attached to these machines with no problems so the disk size isn't the issue. I've built many extern drives via enclosure kits and had no problems (some chipsets wouldn't boot a Mac but they always appeared), so this is a big warning flag.
By chance one (and only one) time, when I tried swapping their cheap power bricks between the two, and magically one (but only one) of the drives appear. I started Disk Utility to wipe it and about halfway through repartitioning it to HFS, it disappears with a warning about it being disconnected from machine. Power cycled the drive, and got a kernel error forcing a reboot of the machine.
I did not bother opening the third drive because I decided even if it worked I shouldn't trust data on a product that had already failed 2/3 times. The drive's powerbrick is a small two-prong box (1x1x2"), that looks remarkable similar in quality and heft as a cheap cell-phone powerbrick. I'd have no problem with with a super lightweight cheap feeling plastic enclosure nor cheap feeling powerbrick if it worked, but it seems like Western Digital has a real lemon here.
Only after I had these problems did I notice the reviews on Amazon (4 out five gave it one star). Add one more warning to stay away from this product...
Mine worked perfectly out of the box.......2007-12-06
I'm using an Intel iMac - I plugged it in, connected the firwire cable to my other external drive (a Maxtor) and it popped up on my desktop. I erased it using the Leopard Disk Utility, it was partitioned and then "Time Machine" went to work backing up my data. I must have spent a total of less than 10 minutes which included breaking into the packaging to extract the drive and its accessories (why hasn't everyone switched to packaging that doesn't require the potentially dangerous use of an exacto knife to open?). One of the reasons I switched from a PC user (for more than 20 years) to mac this year was because most everything works out of the box as advertised. I've had the harrowing experiences described above when attempting to connect external hard drives to Window's operating systems too.
The method to make this drive working.......2007-11-30
I got the same problem just like the rest of the customer had. ""not recognize by the pc". Be honest, this drive has a lot of the complains from customer. But unfortunately, i have a bad habit-i don't give up to try because i pay too much for this and i know that WD is not that low to sell a defected drive. So, i use another method- by searching the system and device driver to see this Harddrive does exist in the list. As i notice, it does exist, just the "my computer" menu doesn't display. So i reformat the drive from the device manager. Good thing is, i use the USB and make it done, Although i never try in another type of wire. Notice this, This drive does work, but all customers need to use on their own knowledge and experience in computer to bypass the problem. One last thing, make sure this drive is the only USB device in your pc by using it, then do the reformat to make the pc recognize it.

Small, compact, and very quiet.......2006-11-09
I have been using this drive now for 3 months and I am very satisfied with it. It's quiet except for a small fan on the back, fast with USB 2.0 and works well with Linux. It's very small and compact, about double the width of a normal internal hard drive (if you look inside the case it IS two internal IDEs chained together!). It seems to be very durable as I have carried it around with me in a bookbag everywhere I go without problems.
