I own a few Smartdisk HD's. I bought this drive expecting it to have a firwire port like all firewire HD's. It doesn't. Other than that it is a great HD with only a USB 2 port and a great deal that is hard to beat.
Mac G4 laptop doesn't provide enough power thru USB.......2007-09-12
I've used a 40G Smart disk with Firewire for several years and it works great. I needed a larger drive for my music collection and since I only have one FW port on my Mac G4 laptop I got this USB model. It just spins and chirps because it doesn't have enough power through the USB port. It would probably work great on any desktop or a more recent Mac laptop. The product is great and I recommend it otherwise. Also, their return policy is fast, easy and done online. UPS picked up the package the next day without question.

this is a USB drive, it does not have FIREWIRE, if your computer can accept firewire (I know Macs do, not sure about PCs). The firewire drive looks identical to this drive, and I could swear that is what I ordered, but this is what arrived. BEWARE. Firewire is much faster, if you have the option you will definitely prefer the firewire drive.

both of those work on and off on an ibm laptop. never worked on an imac (2007).
bought those for a friend and my daughter so they back-up their data/photos/songs ... big mistake, both (both! what are the odds?) are terribly unreliable. what a waste of time and money.

This drive is very fast and comes with free backup software that I use all the time. I am very happy with it. In fact, I'm so happy with it that I bought 2 more of the new 120GB version of this drive.

I have had this firelite for about 6 months and one day it just wouldn't mount on the desktop. I use this on a regular basis - back and forth to work in a Mac based platform. It would light up when plugged in, but would not mount. I've searched google for answers - try it... you'll see I and many others have the same issue. Suggestions have been to change the USB cable to one with 2 ends because it uses too much power. It's a tragedy when you loose valuable work to to cheap technology. I would not recommend this to anyone - well maybe an enemy.

I've been buying these drives for my Mac-based design department - we have 7. No problems with any of them. We all take the drives back and forth almost every day so that we can work on design projects at home and at the office. I put mine in a zippered pouch (no padding) and shove it into my bag along with everything else, so I would say it's pretty tough for its size.
For the student who gave these a bad review because 2 drives had the FW ports burn out - HELLO, it could be a problem with your computer!

I own many of these and I recommend it to the many users I support. In a price/performance comparison, they are the best value around. For better performance you may want to build a SATA on firewire 800, but for the average user, a very good deal. Highly recommended.

after having this drive for only a couple of months both firewire connection ports went dead. and the drive would not mount. I returned the drive, lost my data, and received a replacement.
now, after having the second drive for a couple of months, again, both firewire connections are dead. drive will not mount... all data unreachable.
the drive was never dropped, was kept in a case... and handled very gently.
I am a cg student and need to travel daily with a large capacity drive.
this is not a reliable drive! do not look at it sideways or it may implode.

I've purchased three Smartdisk FireLites and two out of the three have failed on me. Both had tons of data. When I contacted FireLight support for help, they didn't even bother to email me back. I'll never purchase another product from Smartdisk!
SmartDisk FireLite fails to mount on Windows.......2007-12-10
I purchased a SmartDisk Firelite 160GB from Amazon after reading the positive reviews.
Unfortunately I've had a very negative experience with this drive.
When I first received the drive, it seemed as advertised. I was able to mount it just by plugging it into either the USB or Firewire port. Windows XP recognized it immediately. The drive came with BounceBack backup software, which I used to backup the C: drives from my desktop and laptop computers. BounceBack was easy to understand and setup.
After the backup, I ejected the drive and turned it off. A few weeks later, when I connected it again, it didn't mount on the desktop, though it did mount on the laptop.
Now, on my third try, I find that it will not mount on any machine. I've tried it on 5 different Windows PC's, most running Windows XP but also one with Windows Vista. The frustrating thing is that it does show up on Device manager (either connected via USB or Firewire). It's just "invisible".
I've Googled for information on how to fix this problem. I found that others have had this problem too, though all the reported cases were on Mac's.
Works fine with windows, but may not work with some Linux distros.......2007-10-11
I purchased this drive to store/move a large amount of images between my Windows and multiple Linux systems. It seems to work fine when its attached to my XP system, but it does not always work with my Linux systems, and I have to do some creative stuff to finally get it to mount properly.. Actually, on some Linux distros, it does not work at all...
I like this drive, but do your homework and research before you buy it... make sure it will do what you want it dot....
Palm-sized wonder of digital storage.......2007-08-06
I bought my first FireLite several years ago, when 60-gig was a big deal. I have since outgrown that, and had just recently bought a 120-gig in my local store--then I saw the 160-gig model. Of course, I ordered it right away. Tremendous. I'm a musician, and I sometimes travel to jobs where I need my music, both printed and audio, with me. I used large patches of hook and loop fastener to piggy-back the drives to my laptop; they can even stay there in transit; I just disconnect the cords. The drives are extremely reliable and so convenient. Even the oldest FireLite has always worked without fail. FireLite drives are truly palm-sized wonders of digital storage.

I found this drive after I'd been researching on what the smallest external drive was that was over a gig and wasn't like a memory stick. This has a decent 40 GB and very negligible weight to it.
I have a Mac laptop and at first, bought the USB version of the FireLIte but regretted it almost instantly because the USB ports I had weren't strong enough to power the drive. I emailed SmartDisk and they told me I had to buy the "optional" adapter. That wasn't an option for me since I wanted a VERY portable plug-and-play drive so I returned the USB version for this FireWire version and it's exactly what I was looking for. It shows right up on my desktop once it's plugged in and barely weighs anything even with the FireWire cable so I bring it everywhere with me cuz I can. I highly recommend this product if you have the same requirements I did.
beautiful drive.......2003-01-15
Used it for 24 hours so far so can't comment on reliability but an aesthetically beautiful little piece of machinery. Nice lights too--my kids were wowed! Much smaller than I anticipated and comes with it's own little carrying pouch. If you don't know this, Firewire drives get power from the cable, so doesn't generally need another power source (although AC adapter is supplied). Macintosh and Sony (laptops) have this connection standard. Others, rarely but you can add the connection via a Firewire card in your PC.

This disk is excellent value. Setting it up is easy. I use it for nightly backup of my PC.
Note that 40GB is slightly limited for many users. Maybe consider buying a larger model.

I bought this drive because my laptop's hard drive failed and I thought I'd be able to install windows on it, but I couldn't figure it out. I already have 3 other external drives with over 150GB each, so this drive was not all that useful to me. I figured, since I can't use it for a primary drive, that I'd use it for flash drive purposes. The greatest thing about this drive is that it's so small that it can fit easily in your pocket or book bag and can hold 40GB. Most flash drives hold 4GB at most. It's great for storing my projects and other files that I need to be portable. The best part is that it doesn't need external power (for PC...needs AC adapter for Mac I guess).

I got this HD as a hand-me-down from my husband and I have never had problems with it. It's a bit bulky compared to today's portables, and the casing shows some significant scratching. But as far as compatability and portability, it's travelled around the world with him and has been used to transfer information between many computers. It was used with a Dell for several years, and now I use it with my MacBook. No complaints here.

Smart-Disk Bad Decision.......2007-12-20
I Purchased one of these drives for me and my wife. Hers broke a month after teh warranty of a year expired. I called them, they said it is a fatal error and it has happened to other people,because it was over a year they will not do anything about it.
Poor Quality.......2007-12-08
Product has issues. Worked for one month with my Mac (OSx). Then one day after a reboot, it refused to show up on desktop. It began to beep. Disk utility recognized it, but did not offer options to verify, repair etc. Smartdisk tech support said it's a problem with power -- that the unit was no longer able to draw enough power from the mac throug the USB cable as it is supposed to -- they said they're aware that this was a common problem raised by many customers.
As advised, I bought an AC unit ($36) -- the unit stopped beeping, but continues not to show up. If I send it in to Smartdisk for repair, I will lose all data. Upon research, I have seen many other similar complaints about this product. One customer tested the hard drive with another housing unit and was able to find all data -- proving his was a problem with the Smartdisk housing not the memory. But Smartdisk warranty will not preserve data in their repair.
Chief Compliants: USB cable doesn't draw power as it should, and the thing refuses to show up on desktop. Buy something else more reliable.

I bought two of these to back up vital information and photos. To my surprise, they let me down. Not only did I have to purchase a 5v power adapter, but I ended up have to purchase data recovery software after only two months of use.
If it's important and you have to back it up, chisel it in stone before you buy one of these not-so-portable drives.

Incredible Drive.......2007-12-21
I bought this External Drive for use with my PowerBook and have never looked back. I have had it for a year now and I use CCC to make a complete clone of my hard drive and it works flawlessly. I was so impressed that I bought a 120GB USB drive for other storage and to help backup my friends computers that are having Windows troubles.
It is smaller than the picture leads you to believe and it is fast and reliable. What more would you want from an external drive...
Best portable hard drive out there for your money.......2007-08-30
I have had two smartdisk drives for about a year now, and I couldn't be happier with them. I have two versions, a FW 800 and FW 400, and the speed difference is almost negligible unless I'm doing heavy photo or video editing. I primarily use them to store my aperture library and my aperture photo vault. These flawlessly daisy chain with my 17" macbook pro when i want them too, and even play nice when i daisy chain them with my two 500 gb WD My Book Pros.
If you have a Mac, there should be no question in your mind about getting these drives, they are remarkable pieces of engineering.
Terrible.......2007-05-21
This thing broke down on me, believe it or not, three times and I'm on my fourth one. I'm glad they replaced it, but the last time they gave me a USB hardrive instead of a firewire. It never lasted me for over a year. And guess what? This fourth one just messed up. And they don't have a toll free number so you have to pay. You also have to pay to ship it out there and they want you to ship it fedex which if I added up all three times I returned this product for another used one, I could have gotten a brand new hardrive.
I would not recommend this product for those who have important documents that need to be saved and transported somewhere else and have it fail.
Lucky me, I backed up my stuff on a good old reliable CD :)
Oh and by the way, I always disconnect everything by "safely removing" it and I have XP in case anyone wanted to know.

Nice drive. Problem when daisy chain two drive together. XP will lose connection with the two drives. I guess it draw too much power and the firewire can't handle it. As a result, the drives shut themselves down.

I highly recommend this product, it is very compact and light easy to use. I have been using this for over 6 months and am very pleased with it. The price was right and have never had a problem with it. It is powered by the usb so there is no need for an additional plug. It is very portable, I have friends with other models and they are very bulky and not really portable, this really does the trick for storing your documents, music or pics and taking them from one PC to another.

I am using the product with a Dell Latitude D600. Many of my associates have had the hard drive fail on this model. I have 25GB +/- backed up. It backs up changed files automatically every day at the proper time. I of course will know if it is really as good as advertised if my hard drive fails and it restores all my work. The disk failed the first week after being used as a backup. All data was lost. The manufacturer was cooperative in replacing with a rebuilt disk. I could have bought a refurbished disk to start with and saved considerable money. I do not have enough time yet on this refurbished disk to evaluate the product.

This is my first portable hard drive, and after 6 months I am still very pleased with it. It's a very convenient size so you can take your music and files with you wherever you go, and it is also plug and play, which means that you can access files without having to install software on every computer you use it with. Another good feature is that it works for both PCs or Macs. It's also useful as a backup hard drive to protect music files and docs in case your main computer fails.

I love this little guy! I have had it in my bag for 8 months now, and it has 'saved the day' more than once. I am a consultant and am on the road 100% of the time, so I was looking for something light, compact and durable.
Pros:
- Smaller and lighter than similar drives (as compared to those of my colleagues)
- Does not require additional power source (on my laptop anyway)
- Preloaded backup software
- Very much "plug and play"; have used it on 7+ computers and all recognized and accessed the drive right away
- Detatchable USB cable: a plus since I can use the same cable to connect other devices (PDA)
Cons:
- Read/write speed is a little slower than I expected (but it is USB after all) but on par with others I have used.
- That's it!
